The emergence of electric convection in a nematic liquid crystal under the action of a varying electric field is analyzed in the 1D approximation. A new mode of external field variation with subharmonic oscillations is proposed. The behavior of several classes of synchronous perturbations and subharmonic oscillations is analyzed; the evolution of the fields of the director and of the volume charge is studied. Parametric instability regions are specified and the critical frequencies of transitions between response modes are determined. Stability maps for a nematic liquid crystal are plotted on the frequency-amplitude plane.  相似文献

The behavior of a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) in an external ac electric field is studied in terms of the weak electrolyte model. Since electroconvection of certain types of NLCs can occur in a constant field in an oscillatory mode, a quasi-periodic response of a nematic to the external action is possible in an ac field, as well as a sharp reduction of the electroconvective stability thresholds at resonance frequencies. Stability maps for NLCs are plotted on the plane of amplitude-frequency parameters of the external field. Phase portraits are constructed for subharmonic and synchronous perturbations. The optical response of a NLC in the ac electric field is studied; the time dependences of the relative intensity of light, which passed through the nematic liquid crystal cell, are obtained.  相似文献

The excitation of rhythmic current oscillations in a diode cell containing a nematic liquid crystal is studied. The external electric field in the interelectrode gap is directed parallel to the surfaces which orient the liquid crystal molecules. The current oscillations are accompanied by the formation of an autosoliton at the cathode, which propagates and disappears at the anode. A three-mode model of electroconvection of an ideal dielectric in the ac electric field of a horizontal capacitor is developed. With the help of this model, hysteretic transitions between different nonlinear regimes of electroconvection of the perfect liquid dielectric are found and investigated. The cases of zero-gravity and of heating from above in the gravitational field are considered. Frequency dependencies of the electroconvection oscillatory regimes are studied. Diagrams of the regimes are constructed. The following scenarios of transition to chaos are explored: through a subharmonic cascade, through quasi-periodicity, and from equilibrium. Behavior of the electroconvecton oscillations in the high-frequency limit is also studied.  相似文献

Dual-frequency hybrid-aligned nematic liquid crystal cells and the influence of the parameters of a control electric field on their optical response are studied. It is found that the harmonic oscillations of the optical transmission in such cells are observed in the interval between low frequency-to-high frequency voltage switchings unlike in conventional twisted nematic cells. A V-shaped bistable optical response is obtained by successively applying sinusoidal electric fields with frequencies of 1 and 30 kHz to a twisted nematic cell. For a liquid crystal layer 8 ??m thick and an applied voltage of 50 V, the response time is 10 ms. In a hybrid-aligned twisted-nematic cell with a large initial tilt angle of the director (about 70°), the V-shaped optical response is observed when the inclined homeotropic state is switched to the twisted state by applying a 30-kHz field. The initial structure of the layer recovers as a result of natural elastic relaxation, and the response time increases roughly fourfold.  相似文献

We report on the observation of colloidal chain assembly and branching inside capillaries filled with a nematic liquid crystal. Because of the homeotropic anchoring of liquid crystalline molecules on the capillary and colloidal droplet surfaces, the assembly of droplets along the capillary axis is expected, producing a transformation of the nematic director field from an escape-radial to quasiradial configuration. However, the subsequent over time branching of the straight colloidal chains is counterintuitive. By numerical simulations, we demonstrate that chain branching can occur by overcoming an energy barrier and can at least dwell as a metastable configuration. Moreover, manipulation of colloidal chains by electric fields and their gradients demonstrates various regimes of chain behavior in electric fields.  相似文献

A thermomechanical flow of uniformly oriented nematic liquid crystal induced by a quasistatic electric field is observed. This flow occurs when the electric field strength exceeds the static Fréedericksz transition threshold. The effect is attributed to an electric-field-induced nonuniformity of the director orientation which is required for the onset of the thermomechanical effect. The rise and decay times of a Fréedericksz deformation in a planar nematic layer have been investigated. The liquid crystal used was an ester mixture with regimes of positive as well as negative dielectric anisotropy. This property allows to control both the rise and the decay times of the deformation by switching the frequency of the electric field. The kinetics was monitored with a fluorescent dye-probe.  相似文献

The structural features, as well as the optical and electrophysical properties of a 5CB nematic liquid crystal with additions of multilayer carbon nanotubes, have been investigated in the concentration range C = 0.0025–0.1 wt %. The self-aggregation of nanotubes into clusters with a fractal structure occurs in the liquid crystal. At 0.025 wt %, the clusters are merged, initiating the percolation transition of the composite to a state with a high electric conductivity. The strong interaction of 5CB molecules with the surface of nanotube clusters is responsible for the formation of micron surface liquid crystal layers with an irregular field of elastic stresses and a complex structure of birefringence. They are easily observed in a polarization microscope and visualize directly invisible submicron nanotube aggregates. Their transverse size increases when an electric field is applied to the liquid crystal cell. Two mechanisms of the generation of optical singularities in the passing laser beam have been revealed. Optical vortices appear in the speckle fields of laser radiation scattered at the indented boundaries of the nanotube clusters, whereas the birefringence of the beam in surface liquid-crystal layers is accompanied by the appearance of polarization C points.  相似文献

The properties of localized electromagnetic modes in a one-dimensional photonic crystal with a structural defect layer were studied. The role of the defect was played by an anisotropic nematic liquid crystal layer. The frequency and the damping factor of defect modes were shown to substantially depend on the defect layer thickness and the orientation of the optical axis of the nematic. The transmission spectra of photonic crystals with one and two lattice defects were studied. Taking into account the special feature of nematic liquid crystals distinguishing them from usual crystals, namely, large permittivity anisotropy, it was shown that the transmission spectrum of the photonic crystal could be controlled by varying the orientation of the optical axis of the nematic, for instance, under the action of an external electric field.  相似文献

The results of studies of orientational dynamics and instability in an MBBA nematic liquid crystal in a decaying Poiseuille flow are considered. The experiments were made on a wedge cell with a gap width varying in a direction perpendicular to the flow. Confining surfaces ensured homeotropic adhesion of the nematic to the surface. Above a certain critical value of the initial pressure drop, a uniform orientational instability is observed, which corresponds to the emergence of the director from the plane of the flow. The dependence of the critical pressure drop on the local thickness of the liquid crystal layer and on the external destabilizing electric field is determined. Simulation of nematodynamics equations is carried out. The results of theoretical calculations are in qualitative and quantitative agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

为了探究液晶电光效应的微观机理,以扭曲向列相液晶为研究对象,对液晶分子的变化情况进行了理论分析。运用连续体弹性理论分析了扭曲向列相液晶分子的指向矢取向变化,并对液晶电光效应曲线不同区间范围液晶微观结构的变化进行了系统分析。结果表明:液晶分子在零电场条件下的扭曲是均匀的;当外加电场大于某一值时,液晶分子开始转向,液晶产生电光效应。研究结果对液晶显示器件设计和深入理解液晶电光效应机理具有一定的指导意义。  相似文献

The electric field-induced orientational transition in a homeotropically oriented nematic liquid crystal cell is investigated. The interaction with the field as a result of anisotropy of the permittivity and flexoelectric polarization is taken into account. For an arbitrary energy of interaction of the nematic with the substrate simple relations are derived for determining the threshold characteristics of the phase transition. It is shown that, in contrast with planar orientation, in fields above a critical value a periodic structure can occur only by virtue of the flexoelectric effect. The resulting dependences for the threshold parameters in the given geometry are exceptionally useful for determining experimentally the surface energy and the difference in the flexoelectric coefficients. The forced phase locking in a system of the oscillating electroconvective rolls that form in a nematic liquid crystal layer in a dc electric field is studied. As a result of the action of an additive ac electric field with a small amplitude, the system of oscillators is found to be divided into clusters, where oscillations are fully phase locked. The electroconvective rolls in neighboring clusters oscillate in antiphase and the clusters are separated by Ising walls. The phase locking is shown to be maximal at the forcing frequency that is close to the double frequency of the natural oscillations of rolls. A model is proposed to describe spatially distributed phase oscillators, and it takes into account the symmetries of a system of electroconvective rolls and external forcing. The results of numerical simulations agree well with the experimental data.  相似文献

The amplification of the emission of a microlaser based on a cholesteric liquid crystal by means of a uniformly oriented layer of a laser-dye-doped nematic liquid crystal is demonstrated. The nematic liquid crystal is characterized by the anisotropy of optical properties, including the amplification coefficient, which opens the possibility of creating amplifiers controlled by a low electric field.  相似文献

The change in the domain texture of the 5CB nematic liquid crystal on the surface of a polyvinyl butyral gelatinous polymer solution cured in a magnetic field is studied optically. The alignment of the nematic is described by the effective order parameter S* of the polydomain cells. The anchoring energy of a liquid crystal with gelatinous polymer W ϕ = 1 × 10−3 erg/cm2 is determined.  相似文献

We report the experimental high electric field phase diagram of a nematic liquid crystal which exhibits a large negative dielectric anisotropy. We measure simultaneously the birefringence (Δn) and the dielectric constant (epsilon) at various applied fields as functions of the local temperature of an aligned sample. We also measure the higher harmonics of the electrical response of the medium. The following experimental results are noted: (i) enhancement of orientational order parameter S in the nematic phase due to both the Kerr effect and quenching of director fluctuations; (ii) enhancement in the paranematic to nematic transition temperature (TPN) with field; (iii) divergence of the order parameter susceptibility beyond the tricritical point as measured by third harmonic electrical signal; (iv) a small second harmonic electrical signal which also diverges near TPN, indicating the presence of polarised domains. Our measurements show that ΔTPN(= TPN(E)-TNI(0)) varies linearly with |E| whereas the Landau de Gennes theory predicts a dependence on E2. It is argued that the quenching of director fluctuations by the field makes the dominant contribution to all the observations, including the thermodynamics of the transition.  相似文献
