Feldspars are widely used as dosimeters in dating archaeological and geological materials by thermally or optically stimulated luminescence (TL, OSL). The TL, (IR)OSL and phosphorescence (following gamma irradiation) spectra of 26 samples covering the orthoclase-albite-anorthite ternary system, which were characterized by microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis, were measured using the Freiberg high sensitive luminescence spectrometer. The range of observation for TL (up to 350°C) and phosphorescence was (200–800) nm. IR (880 nm) stimulated luminescence light has been detected between 330 nm and 660 nm. Representative examples of our systematic investigations on the luminescence behaviour of alkalifeldspars and plagioclases are presented.  相似文献

As the 110°C TL emission in quartz uses the same luminescence centers as the OSL emission, the 110°C TL signal from a test dose may be used to monitor the OSL sensitivity change. It is thus important to study the relationship between the 110°C TL peak and the OSL sensitivity in studies related to optical dating from quartz. We have conducted a series of experiments using sedimentary quartz, where the annealing temperatures were varied between 260 and 1000°C before the measurement of OSL and 110°C TL sensitivities. Another series of experiments on two sedimentary quartz samples investigated the 110°C TL peak and OSL dose-dependent sensitivity change after different annealing temperatures. In these experiments, the 110°C TL and OSL signals from the test dose are shown to have similar sensitization characteristics: the 110°C TL sensitivity change is proportional to the OSL sensitivity change if the annealing temperature is lower than 500°C. It is concluded that the 110°C TL signal can be used to correct the OSL sensitivity change in the single-aliquot additive-dose protocol.  相似文献

Luminescence sensitivity changes in quartz as a result of annealing   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Retrospective dosimetry using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) on quartz extracted from (for example) bricks needs to account for strong OSL sensitivity changes that are known to occur depending on the previous thermal treatment of the sample. Non-heated quartz exhibits OSL orders of magnitude less per unit radiation than that for heated material. The reason these temperature-induced sensitivity changes occur in quartz is presently not well understood. This phenomenon is also seen in the related area of luminescence dating in which sedimentary quartz and quartz from heated archaeological samples show very different OSL sensitivities. In this paper we report on studies of the effects of high temperature annealing on the OSL and phototransferred TL (PTTL) signals from sedimentary and synthetic quartz. A dramatic enhancement of both OSL and PTTL sensitivity was found especially in the temperature range 500–800°C. Computer simulations of the possible effects are shown to produce data that agree in all essential details with the experimental observations. It is further demonstrated that the enhanced OSL sensitivity as a function of annealing temperature is not a pre-dose effect.  相似文献

In BeO ceramics, exposed to ionizing radiation, an intense OSL signal was observed. The properties of the signal and its behavior under various experimental conditions were investigated. It was found that the OSL signal is a composite signal and exhibits strong thermal quenching. The quenching energy was estimated as 0.5 eV. The excitation spectrum of the OSL signal was obtained as a broad peak in the region 420–550 nm with maximum around 435 nm. The possible correlation between the OSL signal and the peaks in the TL glow curve was also examined. It was interesting to observe that the highly light sensitive TL peak near 220°C does not contribute to the OSL signal. The OSL signal was found to originate from a trap near 340°C.

To check the possibility of using the material for radiation dosimetry the dose response and thermal stability of the OSL signal were also investigated. The dose response was found to be quite linear up to 10 Gy. The thermal activation energy of the OSL trap was determined as 1.7 eV using isothermal annealing and heating rate methods thus proving the suitability for dosimetry.  相似文献

Dose evaluation procedures based on luminescence techniques were applied to 50 quartz samples extracted from bricks that had been obtained from populated or partly populated settlements in Russia and Ukraine downwind of the Chernobyl NPP. Determinations of accrued dose in the range 30–300 mGy were obtained using TL (210°C TL and pre-dose) and OSL (single and multiple aliquot) procedures. Overall, good inter-laboratory concordance of dose evaluations was achieved, with a variance (1σ) of ±10 mGy for the samples examined.  相似文献

Bricks from a group of four independently dated late medieval buildings in Newcastle upon Tyne have been tested to establish their suitability for luminescence dating as part of a wider study of the dating of post-Roman and medieval brick buildings. The luminescence characteristics of quartz extracted from the bricks were determined using TL (210°C peak) and OSL measurement procedures. Both TL and OSL measurement procedures based on SAR and SARA protocols were applied to determine the palaeodose. The luminescence dates for three sampled locations are in good agreement with the assigned architectural dates; the fourth appears to be older raising doubts concerning the architectural assessment of the sampled phase.  相似文献

Aspects of the red thermoluminescence (RTL) and IR (833±5 nm) stimulated red (λemission=600–750 nm) luminescence (orange-red IRSL) of potassium feldspar from different origins are described. Anomalous fading of RTL (300–500°C) from a selection of potassium feldspar samples was tested. High temperature RTL (300–450°C) exhibits less anomalous fading in comparison to UV luminescence, for the samples under study. The result supports the contention of Zink and Visocekas (1997) that the red TL emission from feldspar does not fade. It was found that RTL is bleachable due to IR exposure, and the relationship between RTL lost and orange-red IRSL produced is linear. It is shown that around one third of the trapped charge responsible for the orange-red IRSL signal gives rise to an RTL signal, indicating that some traps and luminescence centres are shared for RTL and orange-red IRSL.

Specific characteristics of orange-red IRSL from feldspar were identified. It was found that the orange-red IRSL decay curve is bleachable by IR and daylight and can be described by the sum of three exponential components. Orange-red IRSL fading was tested. Short-term storage tests (up to 2 weeks) showed no fading. Longer-term (ca. months) storage of orange-red IRSL do in fact indicate fading, though at levels considerably lower than for the UV emission. The contradictory result is possibly due to the detection wavelength. As such, it is highly likely that the long-term fading experiment is strongly influenced by the feldspar emission centred at ca. 570 nm, which exhibits anomalous fading, while the short-term fading experiment is more greatly influenced by the far red emission centred at ca. 710 nm that in comparison to UV emission shows no or less fading.  相似文献

The duration over which charge is retained at trapping sites is of fundamental importance for trapped electron dating. Here, we report measurements of the kinetic parameters of the prominent thermoluminescence (TL) glow peaks of quartz, and of the optically-stimulated luminescence (OSL) signal from quartz utilised for optical dating. The similarity in trapping lifetimes of the 325°C TL peak and the dominant component of the OSL signal are taken as further support for the hypothesis of their common origin in the same trapped electron population.  相似文献

Following a suggestion by Scholefield and Prescott that blue and red emissions in quartz may involve the same electron traps, we have made a detailed study of blue and red TL glow peaks in some Australian sedimentary quartz samples (Scholefield, R.B., Prescott, J.R., 1999. The red thermoluminescence of quartz: 3-D spectral measurements. Radiat. Meas. 30, pp. 83–95). Allowing for thermal quenching of the blue TL, the Rapidly Bleaching Peak (at 325°C for a ramp rate of 20 K s−1) and the low temperature peaks at 140–220°C appear to be identical in the blue and red. We conclude that the electron traps are the same, but that the blue and red luminescence centers probably do not occur in the same grains. On present evidence we cannot determine whether or not the Slowly Bleaching Peak (at 375°C for 20 K s−1) involves the same traps in the blue as in the red. As did Scholefield and Prescott, we find no evidence of a red peak at 100°C.  相似文献

Crushing effects on TL and OSL on quartz: relevance to fault dating   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effect of crushing on the TL and OSL signals in quartz was investigated to examine the feasibility of using OSL and TL for dating of faulted rocks. 275°C TL signals were not reduced by crushing by hand (mortar and pestle), in a pellet die press, or using an automatic mortar and pestle, but the sensitivity of the 100°C TL signal to a test dose decreased in crushed samples. Green light-stimulated OSL signal intensities were not decreased after crushing, but showed strongly increased inter-aliquot variability after crushing. We concluded that OSL and TL in quartz might be useful to characterize the crushing history of quartz in fault rocks, but their usefulness in dating fault events was not evident because we did not find evidence of signal zeroing under the conditions used in this study.  相似文献

A series of experiments on the luminescence signals from the glassy matrix of mosaic tesserae has been conducted. The results presented show the relationship between the 280–390 °C thermoluminescence (TL) peak and the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) emitted under illumination by 450 nm light. We have proposed an appropriate laboratory protocol with repeated irradiations and illuminations of the same aliquot of the sample that allowed for establishing a correlation between TSL and OSL emissions, both very likely associated to the same trap. The thermoluminescence (TL) of synthetic quartz has been investigated in the temperature region 275–475 K. These measurements have revealed a more complicated structure of the 110°C TL peak and thermal activation energies and frequency factors have been estimated for a number of peaks within the glow curve. The results obtained after annealing samples in different atmospheres indicate that oxygen-related defects play an important role in the luminescence process, involving both the charge traps and recombination centres.  相似文献

The luminescence properties of NaCl are discussed. Attention is focussed predominantly upon the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) signal (UV emission) of NaCl (420–560 nm stimulation). The results from experiments relevant to geological dating applications, such as signal resetting, dose response and thermal stability, are described. The behaviour of the OSL signal observed was found to be favourable for dating, with both the thermal stability and dose response suggesting a range of at least 10 ka. Signal resetting via optical exposure was found to be extremely rapid and no evidence of either thermoluminescence or OSL signals was found following re-crystallization. The potential for dating natural salt deposits, as found in various arid environments, appears to be good.  相似文献

Silicon nanocrystals have been synthesized in SiO2 matrix using Si ion implantation. Si ions were implanted into 300-nm-thick SiO2 films grown on crystalline Si at energies of 30–55 keV, and with doses of 5×1015, 3×1016, and 1×1017 cm−2. Implanted samples were subsequently annealed in an N2 ambient at 500–1100°C during various periods. Photoluminescence spectra for the sample implanted with 1×1017 cm−2 at 55 keV show that red luminescence (750 nm) related to Si-nanocrystals clearly increases with annealing temperature and time in intensity, and that weak orange luminescence (600 nm) is observed after annealing at low temperatures of 500°C and 800°C. The luminescence around 600 nm becomes very intense when a thin SiO2 sample is implanted at a substrate temperature of 400°C with an energy of 30 keV and a low dose of 5×1015 cm−2. It vanishes after annealing at 800°C for 30 min. We conclude that this luminescence observed around 600 nm is caused by some radiative defects formed in Si-implanted SiO2.  相似文献

We consider a smooth one-parameter family of four-dimensional manifolds X,≥0, each one endowed with a covariant metric g. It is assumed that g is a Lorentz metric for each >0, i.e., the signature of g is (+,−,−,−) for >0, while the limit metric g0 on X0 is assumed to be degenerated of rank 1, i.e., the signature of g0 is (+,0,0,0). We characterize when the limit manifold X0 inherits the geometric structure of a Newtonian gravitation. The limit manifold X0 is a Newtonian gravitation if and only if there exist the limits of the Levi-Civita connection , the curvature operator and the contravariant Einstein tensor G2 as →0. Moreover, the existence of these limits is characterized in terms of the Taylor expansion of the family {g} with respect to the parameter .  相似文献

Standard methods of OSL measurements (CW-OSL or LM-OSL) do not allow for the direct determination of optical depth of traps. The variable energy of stimulation optically stimulated luminescence (VES-OSL) method gives such possibility. It consists in optical stimulation with the continuous increase of stimulation light energy and is analogous to the glow curve method in TL measurements. The VES-OSL curve shape and maximum position can be regulated by the stimulation photon flux, the rate of stimulation energy increase and by measurement temperature. This allows for detecting the OSL from very deep traps that give the TL signal overlapping with strong incandescence. The VES-OSL measurements carried out for Al2O3:C showed that traps having the optical depth between 2.0 and 2.8 eV are responsible for the OSL signal related to TL peak at about 200 °C. The OSL signal from the much deeper traps from the range 2.8–3.3 eV was also detected. The TL signal related do these traps cannot be detected below 500 °C.

The influence of annealing on lifetimes has been studied in synthetic quartz annealed at temperatures up to 800°C using time-resolved optical stimulation in the range 20–200°C. Luminescence was stimulated using pulsed 525 nm light-emitting-diodes. There is an increase with annealing temperature in the lifetime measured at 20°C for samples annealed beyond 500°C. Further, lifetimes decrease with measurement temperature in a manner consistent with the thermal quenching of luminescence.  相似文献

The timing of 110°C thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) sensitivity changes is explored using a natural (aeolian) quartz sample from Australia that was previously found to exhibit marked dose-dependent sensitivity change. The changes occur asynchronously; the 110°C TL sensitivity changes after dosing plus pre-heating, whereas the OSL sensitivity changes (proportionately with dose) after optical bleaching. Although the magnitude and saturation characteristics of the sensitivity changes are found to be similar, their non-synchronicity negates a direct link between the phenomena. Implications of these results for dating procedures are discussed. In particular, the results indicate that a single aliquot additive dose procedure similar to that developed for coarse-grained potassium feldspar should be possible for some quartz samples.  相似文献

Spectral properties of cubic boron nitride have been studied using methods of photoluminescence (PL), X-ray excited luminescence (XL), thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence. It is found that emission of cubic boron nitride is presented by 4 subbands, their relative yield is determined by the excitation type: blue, green (dominant) and red bands are observed in PL, ultraviolet, blue (dominant), green and red bands—in XL. Three thermal peaks are found in TL curves in the 0–700°C temperature range, their presence and intensity depend on radiation type used. A tentative correspondence between thermal peaks and emission bands is found.  相似文献
