A phosphonium surfactant is introduced as a pseudostationary phase for MEKC and its performance and selectivity are compared to that of an analogous ammonium surfactant. The linear solvation energy relationship model has been applied to the two cationic surfactants, allowing the contributions of five chemical factors to the interactions between solutes and the micelles to be evaluated. Differences in the pseudophases cohesivity and acid/base interactions were observed. Despite the significant differences observed in the solvation parameter results the two phases have remarkably similar electrophoretic properties, with the anodic EOF produced by the dynamic coating and the electrophoretic mobility of the two surfactants being statistically equal.  相似文献

MEKC and the linear solvation energy relationship (LSER) model have been applied to two series of cationic surfactants. The synthetic flexibility of the quaternary ammonium group is exploited to generate the two series, one consisting of linear substitutions and the other incorporating the ammonium into ring structures of varying size. The effects of the head group structure on the CMC, aggregation number, and electrophoretic properties of the surfactants were determined. These surfactants were also characterized with the LSER model, which allowed the contributions of five chemical factors to the interactions between solutes and the micelles to be evaluated. Trends were observed in the cohesivity and polarity of the linear surfactant series, with both increasing with the size of the head group. No trends in the LSER parameters were observed in the cyclic series, but the LSER results do show that the surfactants with cyclic head groups provide a significantly different solvation environment from the linear series. Additional trends were observed in the aggregation behavior and chromatographic properties of the surfactants. These included changes in the CMCs, aggregation numbers, EOF, and electrophoretic mobility of the micelles that correlate to changes in head group size.  相似文献

Supercritical fluid chromatography was utilized in combination with the Abraham model of linear solvation energy relationship to characterize 11 different HPLC stationary phases. System constants were determined at one supercritical fluid chromatography condition for each stationary phase. The results indicate that several types of silica columns, including type B silica, type C silica, and fused core silica, are very similar in their retention behavior. Several aromatic stationary phases were characterized and it was found that, in contrast to the other phases studied, all of the aromatic stationary phases had positive contributions from the dispersion/cavity (v) term of the linear solvation energy relationship. Several aliphatic phases were characterized and there were several linear solvation energy relationship constants that differentiated the phases from each other, mainly the polar terms (dipolarity and hydrogen bonding). One stationary phase, a fused core pentafluorophenyl (PFP) phase, had very poor regression quality. The column volume of this phase was lower than the others in the study, which may have had some impact on the results of the regression.  相似文献

The effect of hydrocarbon chain length on chemical selectivity in micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) was investigated using polymeric sulfated surfactants: poly-(sodium 7-octenyl sulfate), poly(sodium 8-nonenyl sulfate), poly(sodium 9-decenyl sulfate), and poly(sodium 10-undecenyl sulfate). Linear solvation energy relationships (LSERs) and free energy of transfer studies were conducted to predict the selectivity differences between the four polymeric surfactants. The overall nature of the solute/ polymeric micelle interactions was found to be different despite the fact that all polymeric surfactants have the same head group. The polar character and acidic strength of the polymeric surfactant are found to decrease as the hydrocarbon chain length of the surfactant is increased. On the other hand, the polarizability of the polymeric sulfated surfactants increases (upon interacting with solute lone-pair electrons) with increasing hydrocarbon chain length. The LSER results show that the solute size and hydrogen bond accepting ability play the key roles in MEKC retention.  相似文献

A series of four acyl and four alkenoxy glycinates (i.e., mono-, di-, tri-, and tetraderivatives of polysodium N-undecenoyl glycinate (poly-SUGs) as well as polysodium N-undecenoxy carbonyl glycinates (poly-SUCGs)) were compared for simultaneous separation of nonhydrogen bonding (NHB), hydrogen-bond acceptor (HBA), and hydrogen-bond donor (HBD) solutes. An increase in the number of glycine units in the polar head group of polymeric surfactant decreases both the retention and the migration window of all solutes with some changes in separation selectivity. The poly(sodium N-undecenoxy carbonyl-glycinate) (poly-SUCG1) with one glycine unit was the least polar surfactant and has the lowest phase ratio, but this monoglycinate surfactant provided the best simultaneous separation of 10-NHBs and 8-HBAs. On the other hand, 9-HBDs were well separated using any of the six mono-, di-, and triglycinate surfactants compared to the two tetraglycinates. Linear solvation energy relationships (LSERs) and separation of the geometrical isomers studies were also performed to further envisage the selectivity differences. From LSER studies, the phase ratio and hydrogen-bond-donating strength of the poly-SUG series of surfactant were found to increase with an increase in the size of the head group, but no clear trends were observed for poly-SUCG surfactants. The cohesiveness for all poly-SUG and poly-SUCG was positive, but the values were generally lower (with exception of the poly(sodium N-undecenoyl glycyl-glycyl-glycinate)) at a higher number of glycine units. Finally, the poly(sodium N-undecenoyl glycinate) and poly-SUCG1 were found to be the two best polymeric surfactants as they provided relatively higher shape selectivity for separation of two of the three sets of geometrical isomers.  相似文献

In a number of previous communications, we reported on the utility of the solvatochromic linear solvation energy relationship (LSER) method for the correlation of a number of solute and solvent-dependent properties. In those studies, it was our practice to examine the effect of a variety of solvents on a given solute or a number of solutes in a given solvent. Here we report on a novel generalized LSER in which the solute and solvent were both simultaneously varied so as to assess the validity of the entire LSER concept and define its limits. The Hildebrand solubility parameter, δH, the Kamlet–Taft solvatochromic parameters, π*, α, β and the solute molar volume, V2, were used as the explanatory variables. The gas–liquid partition coefficient (K) was the property of interest. We have found that the correlation using the generalized linear solvation energy relationship is statistically as good as the previous LSER correlations despite the use of a far smaller number of freely adjustable parameters. Furthermore, the new approach is able to give reasonable predictions of K values of systems not included in the data set upon which the regression is based.  相似文献

Organoclays are usually used as sorbents to reduce the spread of organic compounds and to remove them at contaminated sites. The sorption equilibrium and the mechanisms of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on organoclays under different humidities are helpful for developing efficient organoclays and for predicting the fate of VOCs in the environment. In this study, the organoclay was synthesized through exchanging inorganic cations by hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium (HDTMA) into montmorillonite, resulting in 12?% of organic content. The surface area of organoclay was smaller than the unmodified clay due to the incorporation of organic cations into the interlayer. Both adsorption on organoclay surface and partition into the incorporated HDTMA in organoclay played roles on the sorption process. Compared the sorption coefficients in montmorillonite and different modified clays, the incorporated organic cations overcame the inhibition effect of hydrophilic surface of clay on the sorption process of hydrophobic organic compounds from water. The sorption coefficients of VOC vapors on organoclay were further characterized using a linear solvation energy relationship (LSER). The fitted LSER equations were obtained by a multiple regression of the sorption coefficients of 22 probe chemicals against their solvation parameters. The coefficients of the five-parameter LSER equations showed that high HDTMA-content montmorillonite interacts with VOC molecules mainly through dispersion, partly through dipolarity/polarizability and hydrogen-bonds as well as with negative π-/n-electron pair interaction. The interaction analysis by LSERs suggests that the potential predominant factors governing the sorption of VOCs are dispersion interactions under all tested humidity conditions, similar with the lower level modified clay. The derived LSER equations successfully fit the sorption coefficients of VOCs on organoclay under different humidity conditions. It is helpful to design better toxic vapor removal strategy and evaluate the fate of organic contaminants in the environment.  相似文献

In reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC), the comparison of experimental results obtained from different columns is a complex problem. A correspondence factor analysis (CFA) and a linear solvation energy relationship (LSER) were applied on retention data to characterize second-order intermolecular interactions responsible for retention on a set of RPLC columns. Seven octadecyl-C18 columns with different packing materials are obtained from different manufacturers and one octyl-C8 column. The retention data were determined under isocratic conditions using a methanol–water (65:35, v/v) mobile phase. The chromatographic retention indices based on alkan-2-ones and alkyl aryl ketones retention index scales are calculated using a multiparametric least-squares regressions iterative method. The CFA and LSER results permitted to highlight that the retention indices were appropriate for studying the second-order retention mechanisms on the eight chromatographic systems investigated and exhibited the best reproducibility. Although many earlier studies have reported the use of chemometric methods to characterize chemical factors affecting retention in RPLC using retention factors as retention parameters, this is the first study based on retention indices.  相似文献

The 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine nitroxide radical (TMPN) was studied by EPR and electronic absorption spectroscopy in LiClO4 solutions in various organic solvents. The14N hyperfine structure, together with the exchange broadening of its components in EPR and the electronic n* transition in the visible region, provide useful information about Li+-TMPN complexes. Both spectroscopic methods prove that the oxygen atom of TMPN was involved in the Li+-TMPN interaction. The complex formation constants 15.61, 2.50, 0.75, 0.61, 0.75, and 0.33 dm3-mol–1 were found in nitromethane, benzonitrile, acetonitrile, propylene carbonate, acetone and tetrahydrofurane, respectively. These formation constants were correlated with donor and acceptor numbers of the solvents and interpreted in terms of competitive Li+-TMPN, solvent-Li+, and solvent-TMPN interactions.  相似文献

The influence of the length of a flexible hydrophobic spacer on the selectivity of anionic dimeric surfactants was investigated. Disodium 1,omega-bis(decyloxymethyl)-dioxa alkane-1,omega disulfates with a spacer containing an ethylene, butylene, hexylene, octylene, decylene or dodecylene group were synthesized, and four of these were evaluated for use in micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) via linear solvation energy relationships (LSERs). There were no significant differences in the system constants of these surfactants, indicating that their micelles all have a very similar interface with the aqueous phase, regardless of the length of the hydrophobic spacer. Compared to sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), these dimeric surfactants are slightly more cohesive, interact better with polarizable compounds, and are somewhat better hydrogen bond acceptors and worse hydrogen bond donors, while there is no difference in dipolarity. The critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) of these surfactants were in the order of 1mM, except for the dimeric surfactant with a spacer containing an ethylene group, which had a CMC <0.03 mM.  相似文献

The Diels-Alder reaction between cyclopentadiene and three dienophiles (acrolein, methyl acrylate and acrylonitrile) having different hydrogen bond acceptor abilities has been carried out in several ionic liquids and molecular solvents in order to obtain information about the factors affecting reactivity and selectivity. The solvent effects on these reactions are examined using multiparameter linear solvation energy relationships. The collected data provide evidence that the solvent effects are a function of both the solvent and the solute. For a solvent effect to be seen, the solute must have a complimentary character; selectivities and rates are determined by the solvent hydrogen bond donation ability (alpha) in the reactions of acrolein and methyl acrylate, but not of acrylonitrile.  相似文献

The linear solvation energy relationship (LSER) model was used to characterize interactions responsible for sorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in air samples on six different solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fibers at 296K and zero relative humidity. The polydimethylsiloxane and polyacrylate fibers sorption data were also modeled at different relative humidities in the range of 10-90% and influence of water vapors on the extraction process is discussed. The LSER equations were obtained by a multiple regression of the distribution coefficients of 14 probe solutes on an appropriate SPME fiber against the solvation parameters of the solutes. The derived LSER equations successfully predicted the VOC distribution coefficients and the selectivity of individual SPME fibers for the various volatile solutes. The LSER approach coupled with SPME is a relatively simple and reliable tool to rapidly characterize the sorption mechanism of VOCs with various stationary phases and may potentially be applied to design and test new chromatographic materials for sampling or separation of VOCs.  相似文献

The linear solvation energy relationship (LSER) was applied to characterize biopartitioning micellar chromatography (BMC) system using monolithic column, and was utilized to compare the above system with other physicochemical and biological processes in this study. The solute volume and HB basicity had the maximum influence on the retention of the solutes, and an increase in the dipolarity/polarizability, HB basicity, HB acidity or excess molar refraction of the solutes decreased the retention. Principal component analysis of LSER coefficients showed that the system had certain similarity to drug biomembrane transport processes, such as blood–brain barrier penetration, transdermal and oral absorption. The quantitative retention–activity relationship (QRAR) of drug penetration across blood–brain barrier was established and its predictive capability for this biological process was evaluated. With the aid of the high flow rate, the monolithic column significantly facilitated the high-throughput analysis of large compounds’ bank without changing the mechanism of the retention in BMC and without impairing good predictive capability of the biological processes. Accordingly, the BMC system, together with monolithic column, allows for high-throughput profiling the biological processes, such as blood–brain barrier penetration.  相似文献
