Call a space X (weakly) Japanese at a pointxX if X has a closure-preserving local base (or quasi-base respectively) at the point x. The space X is (weakly) Japanese if it is (weakly) Japanese at every xX. We prove, in particular, that any generalized ordered space is Japanese and that the property of being (weakly) Japanese is preserved by σ-products; besides, a dyadic compact space is weakly Japanese if and only if it is metrizable. It turns out that every scattered Corson compact space is Japanese while there exist even Eberlein compact spaces which are not weakly Japanese. We show that a continuous image of a compact first countable space can fail to be weakly Japanese so the (weak) Japanese property is not preserved by perfect maps. Another interesting property of Japanese spaces is their tightness-monolithity, i.e., in every weakly Japanese space X we have for any set AX.  相似文献

In response to questions of Ginsburg [9, 10], we prove that if cf(c)>ω1, then there exists an open-closed, continuous map f from a normal, realcompact space X onto a space Y which is not realcompact. By his result the hyperspace 2x of closed subsets of X is then not realcompact, and the extension μf(vf) of f to the topological completion (the Hewitt realcompactification) of X is not onto. The latter fact solves problems raised by Morita [16] and by Isiwata [12] both negatively. We also consider the problem whether or not the hyperspace of a hereditarily Lindelöf space is hereditarily realcompact.  相似文献

We show that the cardinality of any space X with Δ-power homogeneous semiregularization that is either Urysohn or quasiregular is bounded by 2c(X)πχ(X). This improves a result of G.J. Ridderbos who showed this bound holds for Δ-power homogeneous regular spaces. By introducing the notion of a local πθ-base, we show that this bound can be further sharpened. We also show that no H-closed extremally disconnected space is power homogeneous. This is a variation of a result of K. Kunen who showed that no compact F-space is power homogeneous.  相似文献

For a Tychonoff space X, we use ↓USC(X) and ↓C(X) to denote the families of the regions below all upper semi-continuous maps and of the regions below all continuous maps from X to I=[0,1], respectively. In this paper, we consider the spaces ↓USC(X) and ↓C(X) topologized as subspaces of the hyperspace Cld(X×I) consisting of all non-empty closed sets in X×I endowed with the Vietoris topology. We shall prove that ↓USC(X) is homeomorphic (≈) to the Hilbert cube Q=ω[−1,1] if and only if X is an infinite compact metric space. And we shall prove that (↓USC(X),↓C(X))≈(Q,c0), where , if and only if ↓C(X)≈c0 if and only if X is a compact metric space and the set of isolated points is not dense in X.  相似文献

A continuous zero-selection f for the Vietoris hyperspace F(X) of the nonempty closed subsets of a space X is a Vietoris continuous map f:F(X)→X which assigns to every nonempty closed subset an isolated point of it. It is well known that a compact space X has a continuous zero-selection if and only if it is an ordinal space, or, equivalently, if X can be mapped onto an ordinal space by a continuous one-to-one surjection. In this paper, we prove that a compact space X has an upper semi-continuous set-valued zero-selection for its Vietoris hyperspace F(X) if and only if X can be mapped onto an ordinal space by a continuous finite-to-one surjection.  相似文献

The following example is constructed without any set-theoretic assumptions beyond ZFC: There exist a hereditarily separable hereditarily Lindelöf space X and a first-countable locally compact separable pseudocompact space Y such that dim X = dimY = 0, while dim(X × Y)>0.  相似文献

Let X be a Peano continuum, C(X) its space of subcontinua, and C(X, ε) the space of subcontinua of diameter less than ε. A selection on some subspace of C(X) is a continuous choice function; the selection σ is rigid if σ(A) ? B ? A implies σ(A) = σ(B). It is shown that X is a local dendrite (contains at most one simple closed curve) if and only if there exists ε > 0 such that C(X, ε) admits a selection (rigid selection). Further, C(X) admits a local selection at the subcontinuum A if and only if A has a neighborhood (relative to the space C(X)) which contains no cyclic local dendrite; moreover, that local selection may be chosen to be a constant.  相似文献

Let H0(X) (H(X)) denote the set of all (nonempty) closed subsets of X endowed with the Vietoris topology. A basic problem concerning H(X) is to characterize those X for which H(X) is countably compact. We conjecture that u-compactness of X for some uω (or equivalently: all powers of X are countably compact) may be such a characterization. We give some results that point into this direction. We define the property R(κ): for every family of closed subsets of X separated by pairwise disjoint open sets and any family of natural numbers, the product is countably compact, and prove that if H(X) is countably compact for a T2-space X then X satisfies R(κ) for all κ. A space has R(1) iff all its finite powers are countably compact, so this generalizes a theorem of J. Ginsburg: if X is T2 and H(X) is countably compact, then so is Xn for all n<ω. We also prove that, for κ<t, if the T3 space X satisfies a weak form of R(κ), the orbit of every point in X is dense, and X contains κ pairwise disjoint open sets, then Xκ is countably compact. This generalizes the following theorem of J. Cao, T. Nogura, and A. Tomita: if X is T3, homogeneous, and H(X) is countably compact, then so is Xω.Then we study the Frolík sum (also called “one-point countable-compactification”) of a family . We use the Frolík sum to produce countably compact spaces with additional properties (like first countability) whose hyperspaces are not countably compact. We also prove that any product α<κH0(Xα) embeds into .  相似文献

A space Y is called an extension of a space X if Y contains X as a dense subspace. Two extensions of X are said to be equivalent if there is a homeomorphism between them which fixes X point-wise. For two (equivalence classes of) extensions Y and Y of X let Y?Y if there is a continuous function of Y into Y which fixes X point-wise. An extension Y of X is called a one-point extension of X if Y?X is a singleton. Let P be a topological property. An extension Y of X is called a P-extension of X if it has P.One-point P-extensions comprise the subject matter of this article. Here P is subject to some mild requirements. We define an anti-order-isomorphism between the set of one-point Tychonoff extensions of a (Tychonoff) space X (partially ordered by ?) and the set of compact non-empty subsets of its outgrowth βX?X (partially ordered by ⊆). This enables us to study the order-structure of various sets of one-point extensions of the space X by relating them to the topologies of certain subspaces of its outgrowth. We conclude the article with the following conjecture. For a Tychonoff spaces X denote by U(X) the set of all zero-sets of βX which miss X.
Conjecture. For locally compact spaces X and Y the partially ordered sets(U(X),⊆)and(U(Y),⊆)are order-isomorphic if and only if the spacesclβX(βX?υX)andclβY(βY?υY)are homeomorphic.  相似文献

We introduce the classes of monotonically monolithic and strongly monotonically monolithic spaces. They turn out to be reasonably large and with some nice categorical properties. We prove, in particular, that any strongly monotonically monolithic countably compact space is metrizable and any monotonically monolithic space is a hereditary D-space. We show that some classes of monolithic spaces which were earlier proved to be contained in the class of D-spaces are monotonically monolithic. In particular, Cp(X) is monotonically monolithic for any Lindelöf Σ-space X. This gives a broader view of the results of Buzyakova and Gruenhage on hereditary D-property in function spaces.  相似文献

Let exp(X) denote the exponential space of a topological spaceX introduced by Vietoris [14]. In this paper, we study the subspaces of the space exp(N), whereN={1, 2, 3, ...} is the discrete space of natural numbers. We also show that if the metrizability number of exp(X) is countable, thenX (and exp(X)) must be compact and metrizable.  相似文献

Let S be the class of all spaces, each of which is homeomorphic to a stationary subset of a regular uncountable cardinal (depending on the space). In this paper, we prove the following result: The product X×C of a monotonically normal space X and a compact space C is normal if and only if S×C is normal for each closed subspace S in X belonging to S. As a corollary, we obtain the following result: If the product of a monotonically normal space and a compact space is orthocompact, then it is normal.  相似文献

In a recent paper O. Pavlov proved the following two interesting resolvability results:
(1)
If a T1-space X satisfies Δ(X)>ps(X) then X is maximally resolvable.
(2)
If a T3-space X satisfies Δ(X)>pe(X) then X is ω-resolvable.
Here ps(X) (pe(X)) denotes the smallest successor cardinal such that X has no discrete (closed discrete) subset of that size and Δ(X) is the smallest cardinality of a non-empty open set in X.In this note we improve (1) by showing that Δ(X)>ps(X) can be relaxed to Δ(X)?ps(X), actually for an arbitrary topological space X. In particular, if X is any space of countable spread with Δ(X)>ω then X is maximally resolvable. The question if an analogous improvement of (2) is valid remains open, but we present a proof of (2) that is simpler than Pavlov's.  相似文献

In 2003 the author has associated with every cofinite inverse system of compact Hausdorff spaces X with limit X and every simplicial complex K (possibly infinite) with geometric realization P=|K| a resolution R(X,K) of X×P, which consists of paracompact spaces. If X consists of compact polyhedra, then R(X,K) consists of spaces having the homotopy type of polyhedra. In two subsequent papers the author proved that R(X,K) is a covariant functor in each of its variables X and K. In the present paper it is proved that R(X,K) is a bifunctor. Using this result, it is proved that the Cartesian product X×Z of a compact Hausdorff space X and a topological space Z is a bifunctor SSh(Cpt)×Sh(Top)→Sh(Top) from the product category of the strong shape category of compact Hausdorff spaces SSh(Cpt) and the shape category Sh(Top) of topological spaces to the category Sh(Top). This holds in spite of the fact that X×Z need not be a direct product in Sh(Top).  相似文献

Let X be a Tychonoff space, C(X) be the space of all continuous real-valued functions defined on X and CL(X×R) be the hyperspace of all nonempty closed subsets of X×R. We prove the following result. Let X be a countably paracompact normal space. The following are equivalent: (a) dimX=0; (b) the closure of C(X) in CL(X×R) with the Vietoris topology consists of all FCL(X×R) such that F(x)≠∅ for every xX and F maps isolated points into singletons; (c) each usco map which maps isolated points into singletons can be approximated by continuous functions in CL(X×R) with the locally finite topology. From the mentioned result we can also obtain the answer to Problem 5.5 in [L'. Holá, R.A. McCoy, Relations approximated by continuous functions, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 133 (2005) 2173-2182] and to Question 5.5 in [R.A. McCoy, Comparison of hyperspace and function space topologies, Quad. Mat. 3 (1998) 243-258] in the realm of normal, countably paracompact, strongly zero-dimensional spaces. Generalizations of some results from [L'. Holá, R.A. McCoy, Relations approximated by continuous functions, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 133 (2005) 2173-2182] are also given.  相似文献

We generalize and refine results from the author's paper [18]. For a completely regular Hausdorff space X, υX denotes the Hewitt realcompactification of X. It is proved that if υ(X×Y)=υX×υY for any metacompact subparacompact (or m-paracompact) space Y, then X is locally compact. A P(n)-space is a space in which every intersection of less than n open sets is open. A characterization of those spaces X such that υ (X×Y = υX×υY for any (metacompact) P(n)-space Y is also obtained.  相似文献

Let Cα(X,Y) be the set of all continuous functions from X to Y endowed with the set-open topology where α is a hereditarily closed, compact network on X which is closed under finite unions. We proved that the density of the space Cα(X,Y) is at most iw(X)⋅d(Y) where iw(X) denotes the i-weight of the Tychonoff space X, and d(Y) denotes the density of the space Y when Y is an equiconnected space with equiconnecting function Ψ, and Y has a base consists of Ψ-convex subsets of Y. We also prove that the equiconnectedness of the space Y cannot be replaced with pathwise connectedness of Y. In fact, it is shown that for each infinite cardinal κ, there is a pathwise connected space Y such that π-weight of Y is κ, but Souslin number of the space Ck([0,1],Y) is κ2.  相似文献

A metric space (X,d) has the Haver property if for each sequence ?1,?2,… of positive numbers there exist disjoint open collections V1,V2,… of open subsets of X, with diameters of members of Vi less than ?i and covering X, and the Menger property is a classical covering counterpart to σ-compactness. We show that, under Martin's Axiom MA, the metric square (X,d)×(X,d) of a separable metric space with the Haver property can fail this property, even if X2 is a Menger space, and that there is a separable normed linear Menger space M such that (M,d) has the Haver property for every translation invariant metric d generating the topology of M, but not for every metric generating the topology. These results answer some questions by L. Babinkostova [L. Babinkostova, When does the Haver property imply selective screenability? Topology Appl. 154 (2007) 1971-1979; L. Babinkostova, Selective screenability in topological groups, Topology Appl. 156 (1) (2008) 2-9].  相似文献

An extension of the Tychonoff theorem is obtained in characterizing a compact space by the nets and the images induced by any family of continuous functions on it. The idea of this extension is applied to get a new process and new observations of compactifications and the realcompactification. Finally, a sufficient and necessary condition of a vector sublattice or a subalgebra of C1(X) to be dense in (C1(X),∥·∥) is provided in terms of the nets in X induced by C1(X), where C1(X) is the space of all bounded real continuous functions on a topological space X with pointwise ordering, and ∥·∥ is the supremum norm.  相似文献

We continue investigating the lattice (q(X),⊆) of quasi-uniformities on a set X. In particular in this article we start investigating permutable pairs of quasi-uniformities. Among other things, we show that the Pervin quasi-uniformity of a topological space X permutes with its conjugate if and only if X is normal and extremally disconnected.  相似文献
