The problem of classifying, up to isometry, the orientable 3-manifolds that arise by identifying the faces of a Platonic solid was completely solved in a nice paper of Everitt [B. Everitt, 3-manifolds from Platonic solids, Topology Appl. 138 (2004) 253-263]. His work completes the classification begun by Best [L.A. Best, On torsion-free discrete subgroups of PSL2(C) with compact orbit space, Canad. J. Math. 23 (1971) 451-460], Lorimer [P.J. Lorimer, Four dodecahedral spaces, Pacific J. Math. 156 (2) (1992) 329-335], Prok [I. Prok, Classification of dodecahedral space forms, Beiträge Algebra Geom. 39 (2) (1998) 497-515], and Richardson and Rubinstein [J. Richardson, J.H. Rubinstein, Hyperbolic manifolds from a regular polyhedron, Preprint]. In this paper we investigate the topology of closed orientable 3-manifolds from Platonic solids. Here we completely recognize those manifolds in the spherical and Euclidean cases, and state topological properties for many of them in the hyperbolic case. The proofs of the latter will appear in a forthcoming paper.  相似文献

We call a pair (K,m) of a knot K in the 3-sphere S3 and an integer m a Seifert fibered surgery if m-surgery on K yields a Seifert fiber space. For most known Seifert fibered surgeries (K,m), K can be embedded in a genus 2 Heegaard surface of S3 in a primitive/Seifert position, the concept introduced by Dean as a natural extension of primitive/primitive position defined by Berge. Recently Guntel has given an infinite family of Seifert fibered surgeries each of which has distinct primitive/Seifert positions. In this paper we give yet other infinite families of Seifert fibered surgeries with distinct primitive/Seifert positions from a different point of view.  相似文献

For any closed connected orientable 3-manifold M, we present a method for constructing infinitely many hyperbolic spatial embeddings of a given finite graph with no vertex of degree less than two from hyperbolic spatial graphs in S3 via the Heegaard splitting theory. These spatial embeddings are adjustable so as to take cycle subgraphs into specified homotopy classes of loops in M.  相似文献

We propose a version of the volume conjecture that would relate a certain limit of the colored Jones polynomials of a knot to the volume function defined by a representation of the fundamental group of the knot complement to the special linear group of degree two over complex numbers. We also confirm the conjecture for the figure-eight knot and torus knots. This version is different from S. Gukov's because of a choice of polarization.  相似文献

We construct a large class of finitely many hyperbolic homology 3-spheres making the following invariants equal, simultaneously, the integral homology, the quantum SU(2) invariants, the hyperbolic volume, the hyperbolic isometry group, the -invariant, the Chern-Simons invariant, and the Floer homology.  相似文献

The configuration space of the mechanism of a planar robot is studied. We consider a robot which has n arms such that each arm is of length 1+1 and has a rotational joint in the middle, and that the endpoint of the kth arm is fixed to . Generically, the configuration space is diffeomorphic to an orientable closed surface. Its genus is given by a topological way and a Morse theoretical way. The homeomorphism types of it when it is singular is also given.  相似文献

We show that the point set of every flat stable plane embeds in the point set of the real projective plane. Connectedness of lines or of the point space is not assumed. We give two largely independent proofs; the first one is more conceptual, while the second one is more direct, and shorter. The first proof uses a new construction called blowing up a point, i.e., replacing it with its line pencil; this amounts to adding a cross cap. This construction seems to be of interest in its own right.  相似文献

We consider the following problem from the Kirby's list (Problem 3.25): Let K be a knot in and M(K) its 2-fold branched covering space. Describe the equivalence class [K] of K in the set of knots under the equivalence relation if is homeomorphic to . It is known that there exist arbitrarily many different hyperbolic knots with the same 2-fold branched coverings, due to mutation along Conway spheres. Thus the most basic class of knots to investigate are knots which do not admit Conway spheres. In this paper we solve the above problem for knots which do not admit Conway spheres, in the following sense: we give upper bounds for the number of knots in the equivalence class [K] of a knot K and we describe how the different knots in the equivalence class of K are related. We study the topological structure and the homeomorphism problem for closed 3-manifolds M(n,k) obtained by pairwise identifications of faces in the boundary of certain polyhedral 3-balls. We prove that they are (n/d)-fold cyclic coverings of the 3-sphere branched over certain hyperbolic links of d+1 components, where d= (n/k). Then we study the closed 3-manifolds obtained by Dehn surgeries on the components of these links. Received: 27 November 1998 / Accepted: 12 May 1999  相似文献

In the previous paper, the author gave linear inequalities on the coefficients of the Alexander polynomials of alternating knots of genus two, which are best possible as linear inequalities on the coefficients of them. In this paper, we give infinitely many Alexander polynomials which satisfy the linear inequalities, but they are not realized by alternating knots.  相似文献

Let M, M be compact oriented 3-manifolds and L a link in M whose exterior has positive Gromov norm. We prove that the topological types of M and (M,L) determine the degree of a strongly cyclic covering branched over L. Moreover, if M is a homology sphere then these topological types determine also the covering up to conjugacy.  相似文献

The geometric representation of a knot is not too dissimilar from a graph and this interaction has helped mathematicians to solve many problems. In this paper, we apply graph theory tools to study the classification of virtual knots and links. We define virtual planar graphs and compute virtual path width of an associated graph of a virtual link. We show that the virtual path width of an associated graph is equal to the virtual bridge number of a pseudo prime knot.  相似文献
