Normalized irreducible characters of the symmetric group S(n) can be understood as zonal spherical functions of the Gelfand pair (S(nS(n),diagS(n)). They form an orthogonal basis in the space of the functions on the group S(n) invariant with respect to conjugations by S(n). In this paper we consider a different Gelfand pair connected with the symmetric group, that is an “unbalanced” Gelfand pair (S(nS(n−1),diagS(n−1)). Zonal spherical functions of this Gelfand pair form an orthogonal basis in a larger space of functions on S(n), namely in the space of functions invariant with respect to conjugations by S(n−1). We refer to these zonal spherical functions as normalized generalized characters of S(n). The main discovery of the present paper is that these generalized characters can be computed on the same level as the irreducible characters of the symmetric group. The paper gives a Murnaghan-Nakayama type rule, a Frobenius type formula, and an analogue of the determinantal formula for the generalized characters of S(n).  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to discuss the homotopy properties of locally well-behaved spaces. First, we state a nerve theorem. It gives sufficient conditions under which there is a weak n-equivalence between the nerve of a good cover and its underlying space. Then we conclude that for any (n−1)-connected, locally (n−1)-connected compact metric space X which is also n-semilocally simply connected, the nth homotopy group of X, πn(X), is finitely presented. This result allows us to provide a new proof for a generalization of Shelah?s theorem (Shelah, 1988 [18]) to higher homotopy groups (Ghane and Hamed, 2009 [8]). Also, we clarify the relationship between two homotopy properties of a topological space X, the property of being n-homotopically Hausdorff and the property of being n-semilocally simply connected. Further, we give a way to recognize a nullhomotopic 2-loop in 2-dimensional spaces. This result will involve the concept of generalized dendrite which introduce here. Finally, we prove that each 2-loop is homotopic to a reduced 2-loop.  相似文献

For a metric space X, we study the space D(X) of bounded functions on X whose pointwise Lipschitz constant is uniformly bounded. D(X) is compared with the space LIP(X) of bounded Lipschitz functions on X, in terms of different properties regarding the geometry of X. We also obtain a Banach-Stone theorem in this context. In the case of a metric measure space, we also compare D(X) with the Newtonian-Sobolev space N1,∞(X). In particular, if X supports a doubling measure and satisfies a local Poincaré inequality, we obtain that D(X)=N1,∞(X).  相似文献

The Selmer trinomials are the trinomials f(X)∈{XnX−1,Xn+X+1|n>1 is an integer} over Z. For these trinomials we show that the ideal C=(f(X),f(X))Z[X] has height two and contains the linear polynomial (n−1)X+n. We then give several necessary and sufficient conditions for D[X]/(f(X)D[X]) to be a regular ring, where f(X) is an arbitrary polynomial over a Dedekind domain D such that its ideal C has height two and contains a product of primitive linear polynomials. We next specialize to the Selmer-like trinomials bXn+cX+d and bXn+cXn−1+d over D and give several more such necessary and sufficient conditions (among them is that C is a radical ideal). We then specialize to the Selmer trinomials over Z and give quite a few more such conditions (among them is that the discriminant Disc(XnX−1)=±(nn−(1−n)n−1) of XnX−1 is square-free (respectively Disc(Xn+X+1)=±(nn+(1−n)n−1) of Xn+X+1 is square-free)). Finally, we show that nn+(1−n)n−1 is never square-free when n≡2 (mod 3) and n>2, but, otherwise, both are very often (but not always) square-free.  相似文献

Let X=H/L be an irreducible real bounded symmetric domain realized as a real form in an Hermitian symmetric domain D=G/K. The intersection S of the Shilov boundary of D with X defines a distinguished subset of the topological boundary of X and is invariant under H. It can be realized as S=H/P for certain parabolic subgroup P of H. We study the spherical representations of H induced from P. We find formulas for the spherical functions in terms of the Macdonald hypergeometric function. This generalizes the earlier result of Faraut-Koranyi for Hermitian symmetric spaces D. We consider a class of H-invariant integral intertwining operators from the representations on L2(S) to the holomorphic representations of G restricted to H. We construct a new class of complementary series for the groups H=SO(n,m), SU(n,m) (with nm>2) and Sp(n,m) (with nm>1). We realize them as discrete components in the branching rule of the analytic continuation of the holomorphic discrete series of G=SU(n,m), SU(n,mSU(n,m) and SU(2n,2m) respectively.  相似文献

The paper contains proofs of the following results. For all sufficiently large odd integers n, there exists a set of 2n−1 permutations that pairwise generate the symmetric group Sn. There is no set of 2n−1+1 permutations having this property. For all sufficiently large integers n with n≡2mod4, there exists a set of 2n−2 even permutations that pairwise generate the alternating group An. There is no set of 2n−2+1 permutations having this property.  相似文献

A complete Riemannian manifold X with negative curvature satisfying −b2?KX?−a2<0 for some constants a,b, is naturally mapped in the space of probability measures on the ideal boundary ∂X by assigning the Poisson kernels. We show that this map is embedding and the pull-back metric of the Fisher information metric by this embedding coincides with the original metric of X up to constant provided X is a rank one symmetric space of non-compact type. Furthermore, we give a geometric meaning of the embedding.  相似文献

If C is a stable model category with a monoidal product then the set of homotopy classes of self-maps of the unit forms a commutative ring, [S,S]C. An idempotent e of this ring will split the homotopy category: [X,Y]Ce[X,Y]C⊕(1−e)[X,Y]C. We prove that provided the localised model structures exist, this splitting of the homotopy category comes from a splitting of the model category, that is, C is Quillen equivalent to LeSC×L(1−e)SC and [X,Y]LeSCe[X,Y]C. This Quillen equivalence is strong monoidal and is symmetric when the monoidal product of C is.  相似文献

Let X be a metric continuum and let Fn(X) be the nth symmetric product of X (Fn(X) is the hyperspace of nonempty subsets of X with at most n points). In this paper we prove that if Fn(X) is homeomorphic to Fn(Y), where X is a finite graph and Y is a continuum, then X is homeomorphic to Y.  相似文献

Let X be a continuum. The n-fold hyperspace Cn(X), n<∞, is the space of all nonempty compact subsets of X with the Hausdorff metric. Four types of local connectivity at points of Cn(X) are investigated: connected im kleinen, locally connected, arcwise connected im kleinen and locally arcwise connected. Characterizations, as well as necessary or sufficient conditions, are obtained for Cn(X) to have one or another of the local connectivity properties at a given point. Several results involve the property of Kelley or C*-smoothness. Some new results are obtained for C(X), the space of subcontinua of X. A class of continua X is given for which Cn(X) is connected im kleinen only at subcontinua of X and for which any two such subcontinua must intersect.  相似文献

In this paper we introduce a new geometry constant D(X) to give a quantitative characterization of the difference between Birkhoff orthogonality and isosceles orthogonality. We show that 1 and is the upper and lower bound for D(X), respectively, and characterize the spaces of which D(X) attains the upper and lower bounds. We calculate D(X) when X=(R2,‖⋅p) and when X is a symmetric Minkowski plane respectively, we show that when X is a symmetric Minkowski plane D(X)=D(X).  相似文献

Let g:D×DR be a symmetric function on a finite set D satisfying g(x,x)=0 for all xD. A switch gσ of g w.r.t. a local valuation σ:DR is defined by gσ(x,y)=σ(x)+g(x,y)+σ(y) for xy and gσ(x,x)=0 for all x. We show that every symmetric function g has a unique minimal semimetric switch, and, moreover, there is a switch of g that is isometric to a finite Manhattan metric. Also, for each metric on D, we associate an extension metric on the set of all nonempty subsets of D, and we show that this extended metric inherits the switching classes on D.  相似文献

Let X be an infinite dimensional real reflexive Banach space with dual space X and GX, open and bounded. Assume that X and X are locally uniformly convex. Let T:XD(T)→2X be maximal monotone and strongly quasibounded, S:XD(S)→X maximal monotone, and C:XD(C)→X strongly quasibounded w.r.t. S and such that it satisfies a generalized (S+)-condition w.r.t. S. Assume that D(S)=LD(T)∩D(C), where L is a dense subspace of X, and 0∈T(0),S(0)=0. A new topological degree theory is introduced for the sum T+S+C, with degree mapping d(T+S+C,G,0). The reason for this development is the creation of a useful tool for the study of a class of time-dependent problems involving three operators. This degree theory is based on a degree theory that was recently developed by Kartsatos and Skrypnik just for the single-valued sum S+C, as above.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate complete spacelike hypersurfaces in the de Sitter space with constant k-th mean curvature and two distinct principal curvatures one of which is simple. We obtain some characterizations of the Riemannian product H1(c1Sn−1(c2) or Hn−1(c1S1(c2) in the de Sitter space .  相似文献

For a natural number m?0, a map from a compactum X to a metric space Y is an m-dimensional Lelek map if the union of all non-trivial continua contained in the fibers of f is of dimension ?m. In [M. Levin, Certain finite-dimensional maps and their application to hyperspaces, Israel J. Math. 105 (1998) 257-262], Levin proved that in the space C(X,I) of all maps of an n-dimensional compactum X to the unit interval I=[0,1], almost all maps are (n−1)-dimensional Lelek maps. Moreover, he showed that in the space C(X,Ik) of all maps of an n-dimensional compactum X to the k-dimensional cube Ik (k?1), almost all maps are (nk)-dimensional Lelek maps. In this paper, we generalize Levin's result. For any (separable) metric space Y, we define the piecewise embedding dimension ped(Y) of Y and we prove that in the space C(X,Y) of all maps of an n-dimensional compactum X to a complete metric ANR Y, almost all maps are (nk)-dimensional Lelek maps, where k=ped(Y). As a corollary, we prove that in the space C(X,Y) of all maps of an n-dimensional compactum X to a Peano curve Y, almost all maps are (n−1)-dimensional Lelek maps and in the space C(X,M) of all maps of an n-dimensional compactum X to a k-dimensional Menger manifold M, almost all maps are (nk)-dimensional Lelek maps. It is known that k-dimensional Lelek maps are k-dimensional maps for k?0.  相似文献

For a compact Hausdorff space X, C(X) denotes the algebra of all complex-valued continuous functions on X. For a positive integer n, we say that C(X) is n-th root closed if, for each fC(X), there exists gC(X) such that f=gn. It is shown that, for each integer m?2, there exists a compact Hausdorff space Xm such that C(Xm) is m-th root closed, but not n-th root closed for each integer n relatively prime to m. This answers a question posed by Countryman Jr. [R.S. Countryman Jr., On the characterization of compact Hausdorff X for which C(X) is algebraically closed, Pacific J. Math. 20 (1967) 433-438] et al.  相似文献

Let X be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus at least two. The main theorem of Bökstedt and Romão [3] says that for any positive integer n ≤ 2(genus(X) ? 1), the symmetric product S n (X) does not admit any Kähler metric satisfying the condition that all the holomorphic bisectional curvatures are nonnegative. Our aim here is to give a very simple and direct proof of this result of Bökstedt and Romão.  相似文献

We show that every Banach space X whose centralizer is infinite-dimensional satisfies that every non-empty weakly open set in BY has diameter 2, where (N-fold symmetric projective tensor product of X, endowed with the symmetric projective norm), for every natural number N. We provide examples where the above conclusion holds that includes some spaces of operators and infinite-dimensional C-algebras. We also prove that every non-empty weak open set in the unit ball of the space of N-homogeneous and integral polynomials on X has diameter two, for every natural number N, whenever the Cunningham algebra of X is infinite-dimensional. Here we consider the space of N-homogeneous integral polynomials as the dual of the space (N-fold symmetric injective tensor product of X, endowed with the symmetric injective norm). For instance, every infinite-dimensional L1(μ) satisfies that its Cunningham algebra is infinite-dimensional. We obtain the same result for every non-reflexive L-embedded space, and so for every predual of an infinite-dimensional von Neumann algebra.  相似文献

Let nN?{0,1} and let K and K be fields such that K is a quadratic Galois extension of K. Let Q(2n+1,K) be a nonsingular quadric of Witt index n in PG(2n+1,K) whose associated quadratic form defines a nonsingular quadric Q+(2n+1,K) of Witt index n+1 in PG(2n+1,K). For even n, we define a class of SDPS-sets of the dual polar space DQ(2n+1,K) associated to Q(2n+1,K), and call its members geometric SDPS-sets. We show that geometric SDPS-sets of DQ(2n+1,K) are unique up to isomorphism and that they all arise from the spin embedding of DQ(2n+1,K). We will use geometric SDPS-sets to describe the structure of the natural embedding of DQ(2n+1,K) into one of the half-spin geometries for Q+(2n+1,K).  相似文献

A Hilbert bundle (p, B, X) is a type of fibre space p:BX such that each fibre p?1(x) is a Hilbert space. However, p?1(x) may vary in dimension as x varies in X. We generalize the classical homotopy classification theory of vector bundles to a “homotopy” classification of certain Hilbert bundles. An (m, n)-bundle over the pair (X, A) is a Hilbert bundle (p, B, X) such that the dimension of p?1(x) is m for x in A and n otherwise. The main result here is that if A is a compact set lying in the “edge” of the metric space X (e.g. if X is a topological manifold and A is a compact subset of the boundary of X), then the problem of classifying (m, n)-bundles over (X, A) reduces to a problem in the classical theory of vector bundles. In particular, we show there is a one-to-one correspondence between the members of the orbit set, [A, Gm(Cn)]/[X, U(n)] ¦ A, and the isomorphism classes of (m, n)-bundles over (X, A) which are trivial over X, A.  相似文献
