For a compact subset of symmetric with respect to conjugation and a continuous function, we obtain sharp conditions on and that insure that can be approximated uniformly on by polynomials with nonnegative coefficients. For a real Banach space, a closed but not necessarily normal cone with , and a bounded linear operator with , we use these approximation theorems to investigate when the spectral radius of belongs to its spectrum . A special case of our results is that if is a Hilbert space, is normal and the 1-dimensional Lebesgue measure of is zero, then . However, we also give an example of a normal operator (where is unitary and ) for which and .

The paper is concerned with a special class of positive linear operators acting on the space C(K)C(K) of all continuous functions defined on a convex compact subset K   of RdRd, d?1d?1, having non-empty interior. Actually, this class consists of all positive linear operators T   on C(K)C(K) which leave invariant the polynomials of degree at most 1 and which, in addition, map polynomials into polynomials of the same degree. Among other things, we discuss the existence of such operators in the special case where K is strictly convex by also characterizing them within the class of positive projections. In particular we show that such operators exist if and only if ∂K   is an ellipsoid. Furthermore, a characterization of balls of RdRd in terms of a special class of them is furnished. Let K be an eventually compact linear integral operator on Lp(Ω, μ), 1 ? p < ∞, with nonnegative kernel k(x, y), where the underlying measure μ is totally σ-finite on the domain set Ω when p = 1. In considering the equation λf = Kf + g for given nonnegative g ? Lp(Ω, μ), λ > 0, P. Nelson, Jr. provided necessary and sufficient conditions, in terms of the support of g, such that a nonnegative solution f ? Lp(Ω, μ) was attained. Such conditions led to generalizing some of the graph-theoretic ideas associated with the normal form of a nonnegative reducible matrix. The purpose of this paper is to show that the analysis by Nelson can be enlarged to provide a more complete generalization of the normal form of a nonnegative matrix which can be used to characterize the distinguished eigenvalues of K and K1, and to describe sets of support for the eigenfunctions and generalized eigenfunctions of both K and K1 belonging to the spectral radius of K.  相似文献

A natural question about linear operators on the Hilbert-Hardy space is answered, motivated by work in geophysical imaging. Namely, which bounded linear operators on the Hardy space preserve the set of all shifted outer functions? A complete characterization is determined, which allows an explicit construction of all such operators. Every operator that preserves the set of shifted outer functions is necessarily a product-composition operator, consisting of composition with a shifted outer function followed by multiplication with a (possibly different) shifted outer function. Such operators represent important physical processes, including the propagation of seismic wave energy through the earth. Applications to seismic imaging are briefly discussed.  相似文献

We bound the location of roots of polynomials that have nonnegative coefficients with respect to a fixed but arbitrary basis of the vector space of polynomials of degree at most d. For this, we interpret the basis polynomials as vector fields in the real plane, and at each point in the plane analyze the combinatorics of the Gale dual vector configuration. This approach permits us to incorporate arbitrary linear equations and inequalities among the coefficients in a unified manner to obtain more precise bounds on the location of roots. We apply our technique to bound the location of roots of Ehrhart and chromatic polynomials. Finally, we give an explanation for the clustering seen in plots of roots of random polynomials.  相似文献

For a given real polynomial f without positive roots we study polynomials g of lowest degree such that the product gf has positive (nonnegative, respectively) coefficients. We show that for quadratic f with negative linear coefficient every such g must have positive coefficients and exhibit an easy procedure for the determination of g. If f has only integer coefficients we show that g with integer coefficients can be found. Furthermore, for some classes of polynomials f we give upper (lower, respectively) bounds for the degrees of g.  相似文献

In this paper we focus on Hermite subdivision operators that act on vector valued data interpreting their components as function values and associated consecutive derivatives. We are mainly interested in studying the exponential and polynomial preservation capability of such kind of operators, which can be expressed in terms of a generalization of the spectral condition property in the spaces generated by polynomials and exponential functions. The main tool for our investigation are convolution operators that annihilate the aforementioned spaces, which apparently is a general concept in the study of various types of subdivision operators. Based on these annihilators, we characterize the spectral condition in terms of factorization of the subdivision operator.  相似文献

Let E and F be Banach lattices. We show first that the disjointness preserving linear functionals separate the points of any infinite dimensional Banach lattice E, which shows that in this case the unbounded disjointness preserving operators from \({E\to F}\) separate the points of E. Then we show that every disjointness preserving operator \({T:E\to F}\) is norm bounded on an order dense ideal. In case E has order continuous norm, this implies that every unbounded disjointness preserving map \({T:E\to F}\) has a unique decomposition T = R + S, where R is a bounded disjointness preserving operator and S is an unbounded disjointness preserving operator, which is zero on a norm dense ideal. For the case that E = C(X), with X a compact Hausdorff space, we show that every disjointness preserving operator \({T:C(X)\to F}\) is norm bounded on a norm dense sublattice algebra of C(X), which leads then to a decomposition of T into a bounded disjointness preserving operator and a finite sum of unbounded disjointness preserving operators, which are zero on order dense ideals.  相似文献

In this paper we analyze solutions of the n-scale functional equation Ф(x) = Σk∈ℤ Pk Ф(nx−k), where n≥2 is an integer, the coefficients {Pk} are nonnegative and Σpk = 1. We construct a sharp criterion for the existence of absolutely continuous solutions of bounded variation. This criterion implies several results concerning the problem of integrable solutions of n-scale refinement equations and the problem of absolutely continuity of distribution function of one random series. Further we obtain a complete classification of refinement equations with positive coefficients (in the case of finitely many terms) with respect to the existence of continuous or integrable compactly supported solutions.  相似文献

We count the number of polynomials over finite fields with prescribed leading coefficients and a given number of linear factors. This is equivalent to counting codewords in Reed-Solomon codes which are at a certain distance from a received word. We first apply the generating function approach, which is recently developed by the author and collaborators, to derive expressions for the number of monic polynomials with prescribed leading coefficients and linear factors. We then apply Li and Wan's sieve formula to simplify the expressions in some special cases. Our results extend and improve some recent results by Li and Wan, and Zhou, Wang and Wang.  相似文献
