The effect of surface anisotropy on the magnetic ground state of hollow maghemite nanoparticles is investigated using atomistic Monte Carlo simulation. The computer modeling is carried on hollow nanostructures as a function of size and shell thickness. It is found that the large contribution of the surface anisotropy imposes a “throttled” spin structure where the moments located at the outer surface tend to orient normal to the surface while those located at the inner surface appear to be more aligned. For increasing values of surface anisotropy in the frame of a radial model, the magnetic moments become radially oriented either inward or outward giving rise to a “hedgehog” configuration with nearly zero net magnetization. We also show the effect of the size of hollow nanoparticle on the spin behavior where the spin non-collinearity increases (for fixed value of surface anisotropy) as the diameter of the hollow nanoparticle increases due to the significant increase in surface-to-volume ratio, the thickness being constant. Moreover, the thickness of the hollow nanoparticle shell influences the spin configuration and thus the relation between surface anisotropy and the size or the thickness of the hollow nanoparticle is established.  相似文献

The ferromagnetic resonance frequency of different Co base glass-coated amorphous magnetic microwires about 3.5 μm in diameter with negative, vanishing and positive magnetostriction has been investigated from power absorption measurements in the microwave frequency range. The experimental technique employed here involves the replacement of the dielectric of a coaxial transmission line by the sample to be measured. From the evolution of the resonance frequency with DC applied magnetic field, the surface magnetic anisotropy field of the microwires has been quantitatively obtained and, as expected, found to depend on the sign and strength of the magnetostriction. Similar values for the surface anisotropy are obtained in comparison with bulk anisotropy as determined from quasi-static hysteresis loops measurements.  相似文献

We propose a new mechanism for surface-induced magnetic anisotropy to explain the thickness dependence of the Kondo resistivity of thin films of dilute magnetic alloys. The surface anisotropy energy, generated by spin-orbit coupling on the magnetic impurity itself, is an oscillating function of the distance d from the surface and decays as 1/d2. Numerical estimates based on simple models suggest that this mechanism, unlike its alternatives, gives rise to an effect of the desired order of magnitude.  相似文献

Using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method, thickness dependent magnetic anisotropy of ultrathin FeCo alloy films in the range of 1 monolayer (ML) to 5 ML coverage on Pd(0 0 1) surface has been explored. We have found that the FeCo alloy films have close to half metallic state and well-known surface enhancement in thin film magnetism is observed in Fe atom, whereas the Co has rather stable magnetic moment. However, the largest magnetic moment in Fe and Co is found at 1 ML thickness. Interestingly, it has been observed that the interface magnetic moments of Fe and Co are almost the same as those of surface elements. The similar trend exists in orbital magnetic moment. This indicates that the strong hybridization between interface FeCo alloy and Pd gives rise to the large magnetic moment. Theoretically calculated magnetic anisotropy shows that the 1 ML FeCo alloy has in-plane magnetization, but the spin reorientation transition (SRT) from in-plane to perpendicular magnetization is observed above 2 ML thickness with huge magnetic anisotropy energy. The maximum magnetic anisotropy energy for perpendicular magnetization is as large as 0.3 meV/atom at 3 ML film thickness with saturation magnetization of . Besides, the calculated X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) has been presented.  相似文献

It is well known that Fe films deposited on a c(2 × 2)-reconstructed ZnSe(001) surface show a strong in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. Here, the effect of the substrate reconstruction on the magnetic anisotropy of Fe has been studied by in situ Brillouin light scattering. We found that the in-plane uniaxial anisotropy is strongly reduced for Fe films grown on a (1 × 1)-unreconstructed ZnSe substrate while the in-plane biaxial one is nearly unaffected by the substrate reconstruction. Calculations of magnetic anisotropy energies within the framework of ab initio density functional theory reveal that the strong suppression of anisotropy at the (1 × 1) interface occurs due to complex atomic relaxations as well as the competing effects originating from magnetocrystalline anisotropy and dipole-dipole interactions. For both sharp and intermixed c(2 × 2) interfaces, the magnetic anisotropy is enhanced compared to the (1 × 1) case due to the further lowering of symmetry. The theoretical results are in agreement with the experimental findings.  相似文献

The spin configuration in a magnet is in general a "natural" consequence of both the intrinsic properties of the material and the sample dimensions. We demonstrate that this limitation can be overcome in a homogeneous ferromagnetic film by engineering an anisotropy contrast. Substrates with laterally modulated single-crystal and polycrystalline surface regions were used to induce selective epitaxial growth of a ferromagnetic Ni film. The resulting spatially varying magnetic anisotropy leads to regular perpendicular and in-plane magnetic domains, separated by a new type of magnetic wall---the "anisotropy constrained" magnetic wall.  相似文献

Trends in atomic multilayer relaxations, surface energy, electronic work function, and magnetic structure of several low-Miller-index surfaces of iron are investigated employing density functional theory total energy calculations. The calculated topmost layer relaxations reproduce well the experimental contractions and their variation with the surface crystallographic orientation, and surface roughness. The multilayer relaxation sequences correlate with the reduced coordination in surface layers and can be explained in terms of a simple electrostatic picture. The surface energies scale almost linearly with the surface roughness. They agree well with the experimental surface tensions and show a small anisotropy in agreement with predictions based on measurements for other metals. The equilibrium shape of a bcc Fe crystal is determined and discussed. The work function anisotropy is calculated and rationalized in terms of changes in the valence charge distribution. Significantly increased local magnetic moments of atoms in the surface region are determined. The correlation between the anisotropy of the surface magnetic moments and atomic coordination in the outermost layers is demonstrated to follow a simple rule.  相似文献

The energy of the magnetic anisotropy of Co/Cu/Co polycrystalline ultradisperse films is investigated as a function of the thickness of copper and cobalt layers. The influence of the structure parameters (the size and distribution of defects, the period and amplitude of roughnesses) on the surface and volume components of the magnetic anisotropy is analyzed. The parameters of the structure inhomogeneities and their distribution over the film surface are determined from two-dimensional Fourier spectra and electron microscope images of the films.  相似文献

Magnetostatic surface waves with fixed frequency and wave vector are predicted to exist in a ferromagnet with an inhomogeneity of the magnetic anisotropy such that the spectral function has a turning point on the surface. This result is most important for the case when an external magnetic field magnetizes the ferromagnet perpendicular to its surface. The frequency of the surface wave is determined by the frequency of the magnetostatic volume wave at the surface of the ferromagnet, and the wave vector is determined by the surface values of the local magnetic anisotropy field and its derivative. Surface excitations in thin amorphous (Gd1?xCox)1?yMoy films obtained by the rf sputtering technique were studied. A microwave spectrometer at X-band was used for magnetic resonance investigation with external magnetic field rotating from perpendicular to parallel resonance orientations. The critical angle and angular dependence of the position of the surface mode and the uniform mode were determined. The Surface Inhomogeneity (SI) model was applied with symmetrical boundary conditions. The surface anisotropy energy term was assumed as a superposition of the uniaxial anisotropy term and a biaxial anisotropy term. The origin of the latter term is not known yet. We also performed the resonance experiment for different temperatures ranging from 180 to 300 K. From the experiment, the uniaxial surface anisotropy constant Ks1 and the biaxial surface anisotropy constant Ks2 were found as functions of the temperature; the uniaxial anisotropy energy against temperature changes the sign for y=0.02 from easy axis to easy plane while the biaxial surface anisotropy does not change its character.  相似文献

The method of micromagnetic modeling is used to investigate the influence of the surface anisotropy of easy plane type on the domain structures in a thin uniaxial magnetic plate for different values of the bulk anisotropy constant. The easy magnetization direction is oriented perpendicularly to the plate plane. It is established that for low and high bulk anisotropy values, the surface anisotropy has no significant effect on the magnetization field M. For some intermediate values of the bulk anisotropy constant, the surface anisotropy can influence the structure of the domain boundaries and change qualitatively the domain structure of the sample.  相似文献

Magnetic excitations in a series of GaMnAs ferromagnetic semiconductor films were studied by ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). Using the FMR approach, multi-mode spin wave resonance spectra have been observed, whose analysis provides information on magnetic anisotropy (including surface anisotropy), distribution of magnetization precession within the GaMnAs film, dynamic surface spin pinning (derived from surface anisotropy), and the value of exchange stiffness constant D. These studies illustrate a combination of magnetism and semiconductor physics that is unique to magnetic semiconductors.  相似文献

We address the role and the influence of both biquadratic exchange and uniaxial anisotropy in the study of bulk and surface magnetic excitations for a two-sublattices semi-infinite Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The calculations apply to combined effect and are based on a matching technique within the framework of both non-interacting spin-wave theory and random phase approximation. Emphasis has been laid upon the advantage of handling bulk and surface spin precessional fields, characterized by their symmetry in particular. Analytic expressions for the bulk and surface equations of motion are also derived which enables us to analyze qualitatively the nature of the modes by observing the response of the energy branches to the variation of both biquadratic exchange and single-ion anisotropy field as well as exchange parameters occurring on the surface. Two numerical applications of the theoretical formalism developed in this work are described. First concerns the situation when the free surface model is assumed. The second application considers the existence of surface perturbations and treats the effects of the presence of biquadratic exchange term on the bulk and surface spin-wave spectra showing two kinds of surface propagating modes which depend on the presence or not of the uniaxial anisotropy contribution and also on the variations of the bulk-surface exchange parameters. A significant conclusion which this work reached relates to the checking of the results obtained in the literature by using our own theoretical formalism. We show that this formalism is very well adapted to calculations of localized bulk and surface spin-wave modes associated with the simultaneous presence of biquadratic exchange and uniaxial anisotropy. Also, the results obtained for the bulk spin fluctuations field as well as for the magnetic surface waves, are found to be in qualitative agreement with those obtained in the literature. The analytic formulation presented in this work provides an accurate and practical scheme for calculating the surface spin dynamics under the influence of surface exchange parameters, biquadratic coupling and uniaxial anisotropy terms.  相似文献

We show a possibility to determine the parameters characterizing surface magnetic anisotropy of platelet BaFe12O19 nanocrystals with thickness comparable to the magnetoperturbed surface layer of high-anisotropic hexagonal crystal. Taking into account the above-mentioned specific character of the particles, we introduce the constant KS as the surface anisotropy energy per unit volume of near-surface layer. Temperature dependence of the surface anisotropy field as one of the components of effective anisotropy was corrected taking into account the thermal fluctuations. Discovered anomaly initiated calculation of the surface anisotropy constant with different approaches for two different temperature ranges. Analyzing the KS sign changes with temperature, we conclude about the transformation of surface anisotropy from plane to axis type.  相似文献

Large, well-defined magnetic domains, on the scale of hundreds of micrometers, are observed in Ga1-xMn(x)As epilayers using a high-resolution magneto-optical imaging technique. The orientations of the magnetic moments in the domains clearly show in-plane magnetic anisotropy, which changes through a second-order transition from a biaxial mode (easy axes nearly along [100] and [010]) at low temperatures to an unusual uniaxial mode (easy axis along [110]) as the temperature increases above about T(c)/2. This transition is a result of the interplay between the natural cubic anisotropy of the GaMnAs zinc-blende structure and a uniaxial anisotropy which attribute to the effects of surface reconstruction.  相似文献

Using a new micro-SQUID setup, we investigate magnetic anisotropy in a single 1000-atom cobalt cluster. This system opens new fields in the characterization and understanding of the origin of magnetic anisotropy in such nanoparticles. For this purpose, we report three-dimensional switching field measurements performed on a 3 nm cobalt cluster embedded in a niobium matrix. We are able to separate the different magnetic anisotropy contributions and evidence the dominating role of the cluster surface.  相似文献

Although the spin-reorientation transition from out-of-plane to in-plane in Fe/Si film is widely reported, the tuning of in-plane spin orientation is not yet well developed. Here, we report the thickness-, temperature- and Cu-adsorptioninduced in-plane spin-reorientation transition processes in Fe/Si(557) film, which can be attributed to the coexistence of two competing step-induced uniaxial magnetic anisotropies, i.e., surface magnetic anisotropy with magnetization easy axis perpendicular to the step and volume magnetic anisotropy with magnetization easy axis parallel to the step. For Fe film thickness smaller than 32 monolayer(ML), the magnitudes of two effects under various temperatures are extracted from the thickness dependence of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. For Fe film thickness larger than 32 ML, the deviation of experimental results from fitting results is understood by the strain-relief-induced reduction of volume magnetic anisotropy.Additionally, the surface and volume magnetic anisotropies are both greatly reduced after covering Cu capping layer on Fe/Si(557) film while no significant influence of Na Cl capping layer on step-induced magnetic anisotropies is observed. The experimental results reported here provide various practical methods for manipulating in-plane spin orientation of Fe/Si films and improve the understanding of step-induced magnetic anisotropies.  相似文献

The possibility of achieving soft magnetization in semi-hard magnetic films such as Fe, Fe93.5Si6.5, Fe50Co50 and Fe70Co30 is investigated by depositing films on an Fe20Ni80 underlayer by oblique-incidence evaporation. The magnetic anisotropy of the underlayer is strengthened to a depth of several lattice parameters by vapor deposition of the film at an oblique angle to the substrate surface. This method also allows magnetic anisotropy to be induced in strongly isotropic semi-hard magnetic overlayers to a thickness of a few thousands Angstroms. The coercive force of bilayer films measured along the hard-axis is reduced remarkably by this process, and the strength of the anisotropy field is demonstrated to be readily controllable. When magnetic anisotropy exists in both magnetic layers, a significant change is observed in the magnetization processes of the semi-hard magnetic layer and the coercive forces in the hard magnetization direction is dramatically reduced. Soft magnetization of the semi-hard magnetic layer cannot be achieved when magnetic anisotropy exists in only one of the magnetic layers.  相似文献
