The surface structure and electronic properties of ultrathin MgO layers grown on epitaxial Fe(110) films were investigated at room temperature by means of electron diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The spin polarization at the Fermi level (EF) of the Fe(110) film decreases sharply with increasing thickness of the MgO layer. This behavior arises from the formation of a thin FeO layer at the MgO(111)/Fe(110) interface, as revealed by structural and spectroscopic investigations. The strong attenuation of the intrinsic spin polarization is qualitatively attributed to the scattering of spin-polarized electrons at the unoccupied d-orbitals of Fe2+. We have studied electronic structure of Fe-deposited Au(111) by performing ab initio density functional theory calculations. We find that the magnetic moment on the deposited Fe layer is enhanced as compared to that in bulk iron. We observe a large number of new states on the Fe-deposited surface — one of which is in the majority spin channel having similar dispersion to that on the clean surface, and others in the minority spin channel. The effective mass of electrons in surface states near the Fermi level increases on Fe deposition. The electronic properties are found to be insensitive to the stacking of near-surface layers. We need to use very thick slabs in our calculations to avoid splitting of surface states due to spurious interactions between the two surfaces of the slab. Using the local density of states profiles for different surface states, we conclude that in scanning tunneling microscope experiments one can detect two of the surface states — one in the majority channel below the Fermi level, and another in the minority channel appearing just above the Fermi energy. We present results of scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) measurements of hydrogen-saturated silicon clusters islands formed on Si(111)-( 7×7) surfaces. Nanometer-size islands of Si6H12 with a height of 0.2-4 nm were assembled with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) using a tip-to-sample voltage larger than 3 V. STS spectra of Si6H12 cluster islands show characteristic peaks originating in resonance tunneling through discrete states of the clusters. The peak positions change little with island height, while the peak width shows a tendency of narrowing for the tall islands. The peak narrowing is interpreted as increase of lifetime of electron trapped at the cluster states. The lifetime was as short as 10-13 s resulting from interaction with the dangling bonds of surface atoms, which prevents charge accumulation at the cluster islands. It is known that the use of Bi surfactant (unlike Sb) upon the growth of Ge layers on Si(111) increases the contrast between Ge and Si atoms in a scanning tunneling microscope. This makes it possible to distinguish the Ge and Si surfaces. This effect is studied using computer simulation based on the density functional theory. To explain the observed difference between the Ge and Si layers, both structural and electronic effects are considered. The local density of electronic states, as well as the corresponding decay length to vacuum, has been calculated for each of the surfaces. The simulation results have been compared to the previous scanning tunneling microscopy data.  相似文献

Electric field modulation spectroscopy using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM-EFMS) measurements were performed for a Si(1 1 1) surface with epitaxially-grown β-FeSi2 islands. STM-EFMS spectra acquired around the indirect energy gap of Si reproduced the photon energy peak position observed in conventional macroscopic EFMS experiments. However, a considerable discrepancy was found in the energy position of the accompanying spectral dip. We examined two possibilities for the cause of this discrepancy. The first interpretation is that the STM-‘EFMS’ spectra may simply reflect the local density of states based on essentially the same principle as that of tunneling spectroscopy. However, this interpretation is ruled out by the facts that almost identical STM-EFMS spectra are obtained also out of the regime of tunneling. The second interpretation is a spectral distortion due to a large electric field steadily built in the sample surface, which is supported experimentally by a spectral shift of the dip energy that is induced by altering the tip-induced band bending.  相似文献

We observe "ghost" islands formed on terraces during homoepitaxial nucleation of GaN. We attribute the ghost islands to intermediate nucleation states, which can be driven into "normal" islands by scanning tunneling microscopy. The formation of ghost islands is related to excess Ga atoms on the surface. The excess Ga also affect island number density: by increasing Ga coverage, the island density first decreases, reaching a minimum at about 1 monolayer (ML) Ga and then increases rapidly for coverages above 1 ML. This nonmonotonic behavior points to a surfactant effect of the Ga atoms.  相似文献

通过基于广义梯度近似的总能密度泛函理论研究不同Mn掺杂浓度的ZnS(001)薄膜的电学和磁学特性. 计算单个Mn原子和两个Mn原子处于各种掺杂位置及不同的磁耦合状态时的能量稳定性.计算了单个Mn原子掺杂和两个Mn原子掺杂的ZnS(001)薄膜的态密度. 不同掺杂组态的p-d杂化的程度不同. 不同掺杂组态,Mn原子所处的晶场环境不同,所以不同掺杂组态的Mn的3d分波态密度峰的劈裂有很大的不同. 掺杂两个Mn原子时,得到三种稳定组态的基态都是反铁磁态. 分析了以上三种能量稳定的组态中,两个Mn原子在不同磁耦合状态下的3d态密度图. 当两原子为铁磁耦合时,由于d-d电子相互作用,使反键态的态密度峰明显加宽. 随着Mn掺杂浓度的增加,Mn原子有相互靠近,并围绕S原子形成団簇的趋势. 对于这样的组态,Mn原子之间为反铁磁耦合能量更低.  相似文献

The chemical activity of supported metal nanoclusters is enhanced by electronic charging induced by the interaction with surface defects. We use density functional theory plane wave calculations to show that charging of metal atoms with high electron affinity like Au is possible also in the absence of defects by atom deposition on ultrathin MgO films (1 to 3 layers) grown on Mo(100). The Au 6s level falls below the Fermi level of Mo, leading to electron transfer from Mo to Au by direct tunneling through the insulating MgO film. The effect is not observed for Pd, whose 5s empty level falls just above the Fermi level of Mo, or for thicker MgO films.  相似文献

基于密度泛函理论第一性原理, 在广义梯度近似下, 研究了表面覆盖度为0.25 ML (monolayer)时硫化氢分子在Fe(100)面吸附的结构和电子性质, 并与单个硫原子吸附结果进行了对比. 结果表明: 硫化氢分子吸附在B2位吸附能最小为-1.23 eV, 最稳定, B1位吸附能最大为-0.01 eV, 最不稳定; 并对硫化氢分子在B1位和B2位吸附后的电子态密度进行了分析, 也表明了吸附在B2位稳定, 且吸附在B2位后硫化氢分子几何结构变化不大; 将硫化氢中硫原子吸附与单个硫原子吸附的电子性质进行了比较, 发现前者吸附作用非常微弱; 同时对吸附后的Fe(100)面进行了对比, 单个硫原子吸附的Fe(100)面电子态密度出现了一系列峰值且离散分布, 生成了硫化亚铁, 表明在硫化氢环境下, 主要是硫化氢析出的硫原子发生了吸附. 关键词: 第一性原理 Fe(100)表面 吸附能 硫化氢  相似文献

The electronic structures of Fe-doped TiO2 anatase (1 0 1) surfaces have been investigated by all spin-polarized density functional theory (DFT) plane-wave pseudopotential method. The general gradient approximation (GGA)+U (Hubbard coefficient) method has been adopted to describe the exchange-correlation effects. Through the density functional calculations for the formation energies of various configurations, the complex of a substitutional Fe plus an O vacancy was found to form easily in the most range of O chemical potential. The calculated density of the states of the system of Fe-doped surface with a surface oxygen vacancy shows a band gap narrowing from 2.8 to 1.9 eV comparing with the pure surface due to the synergistic effects of surface Fe impurities with O vacancies. The system processes high visible light sensitivity and photocatalytic ability by decreasing extrinsic absorption energy. By comparing the partial DOS of some O and Ti atoms lying in the outermost and bottom layers of Fe-doped surfaces, it was found that the influence of Fe impurities on the electronic structure of the system is localized.  相似文献

The arrangement of single gold and palladium atoms deposited on the surface of a 3 monolayer thin film of MgO was investigated using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. While Pd atoms are arranged in a random fashion, Au forms an ordered array on the surface. The long-range ordering as well as the scanning tunneling microscopy appearance of single Au atoms on a 3 monolayer thin MgO film can be explained by partial charge transfer from the substrate to Au atoms as predicted recently by density functional theory calculations [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 226104 (2005)10.1103/PhysRevLett.94.226104]. In contrast with that, Au atoms on a thick film were found to be essentially neutral.  相似文献

The surface of 1T-TiS2 was examined by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The STM and AFM images of this compound were interpreted on the basis of the partial electron density ρ(r,EF) and total electron density ρ(r) of a slab which consists of six (001) 1T-TiS2 layers. Electronic structure calculations were performed using the ab-initio Hartree–Fock program crystal. It was found that the bright spots in experimental STM images correspond to sulfur atoms at both positive and negative bias voltages. The AFM image showed a periodicity which can be explained by the atomic corrugation at the surface. Structural defects on the surface were also investigated, and their interpretation constitutes experimental proof that only sulfur atoms were detected by scanning probe microscopies.  相似文献

Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (SP-STM/STS) has been performed on clean and sulfur-covered three-dimensional Fe islands on W(1 1 0). Upon dosing with H2S the island surface is covered with 1/3 ML S leading to a c(3 × 1) reconstruction. The characteristic magnetic vortex structure is observable before and after dosing, even though the electronic structure of the surface is modified as is shown by SP-STS.  相似文献

Two-dimensional lead (Pb) islands of varying heights have been grown on the Si(111)-(7 x 7) surface at low temperature. Individual islands are investigated concurrently with real-space and local-probe scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Quantum size effects, manifested in the formation of new electronic bound states, redistribution of surface charge density, and oscillatory relaxations in island thickness are found to be perfectly correlated to each other.  相似文献

The dynamics of the adsorption and evolution of fluorinated C60F18 fullerene molecules on the Cu(001) surface are studied by real-time ultra-high vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy. Fluorinated fullerene molecules are shown to decompose with time on the Cu(001) surface transforming to C60 molecules. The decay rate depends on the initial molecular coverage. The rapid decay of fluorinated fullerene molecules is observed when the coverage is no higher than 0.2 single layers. As a result, two-dimensional islands consisting of pure C60 molecules are formed on the Cu(001) surface. 2D islands consisting of fluorinated fullerene molecules are formed when the initial molecular coverage is higher than 0.5 single layers. The molecules inside these islands also tend to decompose with time. It is found experimentally that fluorine atoms are removed completely from the initial C60F18 molecules adsorbed on the Cu(001) surface after 250 h when the initial molecular coverage is 0.6 single layers.  相似文献

Light emitted in the tunneling junction of a scanning tunneling microscope has been used to establish the electrical characteristics of nanojunctions made of Au islands deposited on flat MoS2 surfaces. It is shown that these characteristics are those of rectifying contacts when the gold islands are isolated and that they evolve toward those of ohmic contacts when the island density increases. It is observed that the rectifying behavior also evolves over time as on infinite metal/semiconductor contacts. Using the STM tip, single gold islands can be manipulated on the MoS2 surface so that their electrical behavior can be changed depending on their position with regard to the other islands.  相似文献

Incoherent nuclear resonant absorption of synchrotron radiation at the 14.413 keV nuclear resonance of 57Fe was employed to measure directly the Fe-projected (partial) phonon density of states (DOS) in epitaxial FeCr(0 0 1) superlattices and in an 57Fe0.03Cr0.97(0 0 1) alloy film MBE-grown on MgO(0 0 1). The measurements were performed at 300 K with 2.3 meV energy resolution around 14.413 keV. At the interfaces, longitudinal vibrations of Fe atoms are suppressed, and a strong resonance phonon mode appears near 23 meV. We investigated spin-dependent tunneling conductance properties in fully epitaxial double MgO barrier magnetic tunnel junctions with layered nanoscale Fe islands as a middle layer. Clear oscillations of the tunneling conductance were observed as a function of the bias voltage. The oscillation, which depends on the middle layer thickness and the magnetization configuration, is interpreted by the modulation of tunneling conductance due to the spin-polarized quantum well states created in the middle Fe layer. This first observation of the quantum size effect in the fully epitaxial double barrier magnetic tunnel junction indicates great potential for the development of the spin-dependent resonant tunneling effect in coherent tunneling regime.  相似文献
