Singly generated planar algebras of small dimension, Part II

We classified in Bisch and Jones (Duke Math. J. 101 (2000) 41) all spherical C∗-planar algebras generated by a non-trivial 2-box subject to the condition that the dimension of N′∩M₂ is ?12. We showed that they are given by the Fuss-Catalan systems discovered in Bisch and Jones (Invent. Math. 128 (1997) 89) and one exceptional planar algebra. In the present paper, we extend these results and show that there is only one spherical C∗-planar algebra generated by a single non-trivial 2-box if the dimension of N′∩M₂ is 13. It is given by the standard invariant of the crossed product subfactor , where D₅ denotes the dihedral group with 10 elements.     

HNN extensions of von Neumann algebras

Reduced HNN extensions of von Neumann algebras (as well as C^*-algebras) will be introduced, and their modular theory, factoriality and ultraproducts will be discussed. In several concrete settings, detailed analysis on them will be also carried out.     

Weakly compact multipliers on group algebras

We study left multipliers on the second dual spaces L¹(G)″ and M(G)″. We answer a question of Ghahramani and Lau, showing that for non-compact G a non-zero left multiplier on these spaces cannot be weakly compact.     

UCT-Kirchberg algebras have nuclear dimension one

We prove that every Kirchberg algebra in the UCT class has nuclear dimension 1. We first show that Kirchberg 2-graph algebras with trivial _K0$K_0$ and finite _K1$K_1$ have nuclear dimension 1 by adapting a technique developed by Winter and Zacharias for Cuntz algebras. We then prove that every Kirchberg algebra in the UCT class is a direct limit of 2-graph algebras to obtain our main theorem.     

Reflexive *-derivations and lattices of invariant subspaces of operator algebras associated with them

The paper studies unbounded reflexive *-derivations δ of C*-algebras of bounded operators on Hilbert spaces H whose domains D(δ) are weekly dense in B(H and contain compact operators. It describes a one-to-one correspondence between these derivations and pairs S,L, where S are symmetric densely operators on H and L are J-orthogonal π-reflexive lattices of subspaces in the deficiency spaces of S. The domains D(δ) of these *-derivations are associated with some non-selfadjoint reflexive algebras A_δ of bounded operators on H⊕H. The paper analyzes the structure of the lattices of invariant subspaces of A_δ and of the normalizers of A_δ-the largest Lie subalgebras of B(H⊕H) such that A_δ are their Lie ideals.     

Bimodules in crossed products of von Neumann algebras

In this paper, we study bimodules over a von Neumann algebra M   in the context of an inclusion M⊆M_?αG$M\subseteq M{?}_{\alpha }G$, where G is a discrete group acting on a factor M by outer ?-automorphisms. We characterize the M  -bimodules X⊆M_?αG$X\subseteq M{?}_{\alpha }G$ that are closed in the Bures topology in terms of the subsets of G  . We show that this characterization also holds for w^?$w^{?}$-closed bimodules when G has the approximation property (AP  ), a class of groups that includes all amenable and weakly amenable ones. As an application, we prove a version of Mercer's extension theorem for certain w^?$w^{?}$-continuous surjective isometric maps on X.     

On interpolation of Banach algebras and factorization of weakly compact homomorphisms

We show a necessary and sufficient condition on the lattice Γ for the general real method to preserve the Banach-algebra structure. As an application we derive factorization of weakly compact homomorphisms through interpolation properties of weakly compact operators.     

Solvable Jordan algebras of compact operators

It is proved that a Jordan algebra of compact operators which is closed is either an Engel Jordan algebra, or contains a nonzero finite rank operator; Moreover, it is showed that any solvable Jordan algebra of compact operators on an infinite dimensional Banach space is triangularizable.     

Real interpolation of Banach algebras and factorization of weakly compact homomorphisms

We consider the problem of when the real interpolation method respects Banach-algebra structure. Using our results, we show that every weakly compact homomorphism between Banach algebras factors through a reflexive Banach algebra.     

On some subalgebras of von Neumann algebras with analyticity

Let (M,α,G) be a covariant system on a locally compact Abelian group G with the totally ordered dual group which admits the positive semigroup . Let H^∞(α) be the associated analytic subalgebra of M; i.e. . Let be the analytic crossed product determined by a covariant system . We give the necessary and sufficient condition that an analytic subalgebra H^∞(α) is isomorphic to an analytic crossed product related to Landstad's theorem. We also investigate the structure of σ-weakly closed subalgebra of a continuous crossed product N?_θR which contains N?_θR₊. We show that there exists a proper σ-weakly closed subalgebra of N?_θR which contains N?_θR₊ and is not an analytic crossed product. Moreover we give an example that an analytic subalgebra is not a continuous analytic crossed product using the continuous decomposition of a factor of type III_λ(0?λ<1).     

Banach algebras on compact right topological groups

It is shown how the basic constructs of harmonic analysis, such as convolution, algebras of measures and functions (including Fourier-Stieltjes algebras) can be developed for compact Hausdorff right topological groups. In particular, the properties and structure of these new objects are compared with their classical analogues in the topological group case.     

KMS states of quasi-free dynamics on Pimsner algebras

A continuous one-parameter group of unitary isometries of a right-Hilbert -bimodule induces a quasi-free dynamics on the Cuntz-Pimsner -algebra of the bimodule and on its Toeplitz extension. The restriction of such a dynamics to the algebra of coefficients of the bimodule is trivial, and the corresponding KMS states of the Toeplitz-Cuntz-Pimsner and Cuntz-Pimsner -algebras are characterized in terms of traces on the algebra of coefficients. This generalizes and sheds light onto various earlier results about KMS states of the gauge actions on Cuntz algebras, Cuntz-Krieger algebras, and crossed products by endomorphisms. We also obtain a more general characterization, in terms of KMS weights, for the case in which the inducing isometries are not unitary, and accordingly, the restriction of the quasi-free dynamics to the algebra of coefficients is nontrivial.     

Remarks on ghost projections and ideals in the Roe algebras of expander sequences

We use repeating sequences of expander graphs or small perturbations of expanders to present examples of ideals in the Roe algebras of bounded geometry discrete metric spaces which cannot be expressed as the sum of a ghost ideal and an ideal in which finite propagation operators are dense. Inverse closedness ofC *-algebras in Banach algebras

LetA denote a unital Banach algebra, and letB denote aC ^*-algebra which is contained as a unital subalgebra inA. We prove thatB is inverse closed inA if the norms ofA andB coincide. This generalizes well known result about inverse closedness ofC ^*-subalgebras inC ^*-algebras.     

Duality and operator algebras II: operator algebras as Banach algebras

We answer, by counterexample, several questions concerning algebras of operators on a Hilbert space. The answers add further weight to the thesis that, for many purposes, such algebras ought to be studied in the framework of operator spaces, as opposed to that of Banach spaces and Banach algebras. In particular, the ‘nonselfadjoint analogue’ of a w*-algebra resides naturally in the category of dual operator spaces, as opposed to dual Banach spaces. We also show that an automatic w*-continuity result in the preceding paper of the authors, is sharp.     

A new class of Kadison-Singer algebras

We show that the projection lattice generated by a maximal nest and a rank one projection in a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space is in general reflexive. Moreover we show that the corresponding reflexive algebra has a maximal triangular property, equivalently, it is a Kadison-Singer algebra. Similar results are also obtained for the lattice generated by a finite nest and a projection in a finite factor.
