The authors describe an electrochemical sensor for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). It was constructed by consecutive, selective modification of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with Prussian Blue (PB), layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The properties of the modified GCE were characterized via high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The electrochemical properties of the electrode were studied using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The sensor exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity for the reduction of hydrogen peroxide in comparison to GCEs modified with MoS2-rGO or PB only. Response is linear in the 0.3 μM to 1.15 mM H2O2 concentration range at a working analytical voltage of 0.1 V, with a 0.14 μM detection limit. The electrochemical sensitivity is 2883.5 μA·μM?1·cm?2, and response is fast (<10 s). The sensor is selective, stable and reproducible. This is attributed to the efficient electron transport properties of the MoS2-rGO composite and the high loading with PB.

A magnetic glassy carbon electrode (mGCE) was modified with a ternary composite prepared from Prussian blue (PB), magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles, and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) in order to obtain an amperometric sensor for hydrazine. The utilization of Fe3O4 facilitates the magnetic immobilization and separation of sensing material, while the use of rGO enhances sensitivity. The surface coverage and the stability of the PB on the modified electrode were considerably improved. The electro-oxidative response to hydrazine was investigated with this modified mGCE using cyclic voltammetry and amperometric. The sensor, typically operated at a voltage of 0.2 V (vs. SCE), displays superior response hydrazine, with a response time of 4 s, a sensitivity of 97.73 μA μM?1 cm?2 and a 13.7 nM detection limit.

The authors report on the preparation of a hollow-structured cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) nanocomposite for use in a non-enzymatic sensor for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Silica (SiO2) nanoparticles were exploited as template for the deposition of Fe3O4/CoFe2O4 nanosheets, which was followed by the removal of SiO2 template under mild conditions. This leads to the formation of hollow-structured Fe3O4/CoFe2O4 interconnected nanosheets with cubic spinel structure of high crystallinity. The material was placed on a glassy carbon electrode where it acts as a viable sensor for non-enzymatic determination of H2O2. Operated at a potential of ?0.45 V vs. Ag/AgCl in 0.1 M NaOH solution, the modified GCE has a sensitivity of 17 nA μM?1 cm?2, a linear response in the range of 10 to 1200 μM H2O2 concentration range, and a 2.5 μM detection limit. The sensor is reproducible and stable and was applied to the analysis of spiked urine samples, where it provided excellent recoveries.

The authors report on a ratiometric electrochemical sensor for paracetamol (PR) which was fabricated by successively electropolymerizing a layer of Prussian blue (PB) and a layer of molecularly imprinted polypyrrole (MIP) on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The binding of PR molecules to the MIP has two effects: The first is an increase of the oxidation current for PR at 0.42 V (vs. SCE), and the second is a decrease in the current for PB (at 0.18 V) due to partial blocking of the channels which results in reduced electron transmissivity. Both currents, and in particular their ratio, can serve as analytical information. Under optimized conditions, the sensor displays enhanced sensitivity for PR in the 1.0 nM to 0.1 mM concentration range and a 0.53 nM lower limit of detection. The sensor was applied to the determination of PR in tablets and urines where it gave recoveries in the range between 94.6 and 104.9 %. This dual-signal (ratiometric) detection scheme (using electropolymerized Prussian Blue and analyte-specific MIP) in our perception has a wide scope in that it may be applied to numerous other electroactive species for which specific MIP can be made available.
Graphical Abstract Prussian blue (PB) and molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) were combined to fabricate an electrochemical sensor for paracetamol (PR) detection. The ratio of both currents, increase of PR current and decrease of PB current, was employed for PR selective detection with enhanced sensitivity.

The incorporation of nanomaterials into electrochemical sensors is an attractive approach towards the improvement of the sensitivity of amperometry and also can provide improved sensor selectivity and stability. This review (with 137 references) details the current state of the art and new trends in nanomaterial-based electrochemical sensing of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and nitric oxide (NO) in cells or released by cells. The article starts with a discussion of the significance of the three analytes, and this is followed by three sections that summarize the electrochemical detection schemes for H2O2, H2S and NO. Each section first summarizes the respective physiological roles, and then reviews electrochemical sensors based on the use of carbon nanomaterials, noble metal nanomaterials, metal oxide nanomaterials, and layered doubled hydroxides. The materials are compiled in three tables along with figures of merit for the various sensors.

A sandwich-type electrochemical DNA sensor is described for the detection of oligonucleotides typical for MECP2 gene mutations. Palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) and platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) were used to synthesize flower-like PdPt nanodendrites (NDs) by a one-pot method. The PdPt NDs possess a high specific surface area and excellent catalytic capabilities. They served as the carrier for the signal DNA probe (SP) and simultaneously catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The PdPt NDs were modified with melamine, and this results in the formation of a PdPt-melamine network through stable interactions between the PdPt NDs and the three amino groups of each melamine molecule. The network exhibits excellent catalytic ability in enhancing the current signal response in the voltammetric detection of MECP2 gene mutation, best measured at ?0.4 V vs. SCE and using H2O2 as the electrochemical probe. In addition, gold nanoflowers were electrodeposited on the electrode interface in order to accelerate electron transfer and to capture the capture probe. The sensor is stable and can detect MECP2 gene mutations in the 1 fmol·L?1 to 1 nmol·L?1 concentration range, with a 0.33 fmol·L?1 lower detection limit at an S/N ratio of 3.

We report on a non-enzymatic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) sensor which makes use of a nanocomposite consisting of platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) and chitosan-encapsulated graphite (graphite-CS). The composite was prepared by sonication of pristine graphite in chitosan (CS) in 5 % acetic acid. The PtNP decorated graphite-CS (graphite-CS/PtNPs) composite was prepared by electrodeposition of PtNPs on the graphite-CS modified glassy carbon electrode. The graphite-CS/PtNP composite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, elemental analysis and FTIR spectroscopy. The modified electrode displays an enhanced reduction peak current for H2O2 when compared with electrodes modified with graphite/PtNPs and PtNPs. The modified electrode exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity towards the reduction of H2O2, and the amperometric response is linear over the concentration range from 0.25 to 2890 μM. The sensitivity and the detection limit are 0.465 μA?μM ̄1 ? cm ̄2 and 66 nM, respectively. The sensor shows fast response (3 s) in detecting H2O2. It is also highly selective in the presence of potentially interfering compounds, and may therefore be used as a feasible platform for sensing H2O2 in real samples.

The paper describes a nonenzymatic amperometric H2O2 sensor that uses a nanocomposite consisting of Co3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) and mesoporous carbon nanofibers (Co3O4-MCNFs). The Co3O4 NPs were grown in situ on the MCNFs by a solvothermal procedure. The synergetic combination of the electrocatalytic activity of the Co3O4 NPs and the electrical conductivity of MCNFs as an immobilization matrix enhance the sensing ability of the hybrid nanostructure. The oxidation current, best measured at 0.2 V (vs. SCE) is linear in the 1 to 2580 μM H2O2 concentration range, with a 0.5 μM lower detection limit (at an S/N ratio of 3). The sensor is highly selective even in the presence of common electroactive interferents. It was applied to the determination of H2O2 in spiked milk samples.

The authors report that carbon nitride quantum dots (CN QDs) exert a strong enhancing effect on the Cu(II)/H2O2 chemiluminescent system. Chemiluminescence (CL) intensity is enhanced by CN QDs by a factor of ~75, while other carbon nanomaterials have a much weaker effect. The possible mechanism of the effect was evaluated by recording fluorescence and CL spectra and by examining the effect of various radical scavengers. Emitting species was found to be excited-state CN QDs that produce green CL peaking at 515 nm. The new CL system was applied to the sensitive detection of H2O2 and glucose (via glucose oxidase-catalyzed formation of H2O2) with detection limits (3σ) of 10 nM for H2O2 and 100 nM for glucose. The probe was employed for glucose determination in human plasma samples with satisfactory results.

A highly sensitive electrochemical sensor is described for the determination of H2O2. It is based on based on the use of polyaniline that was generated in-situ and within 1 min on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with the aid of the Fe(II)/H2O2 system. Initially, a 2-dimensional composite was prepared from graphene oxide and polyamidoamine dendrimer through covalent interaction. It was employed as a carrier for Fe(II) ions. Then, the nanocomposite was drop-coated onto the surface of the GCE. When exposed to H2O2, the Fe(II) on the GCE is converted to Fe(III), and free hydroxy radicals are formed. The Fe(III) ions and the hydroxy radicals catalyze the oxidation of aniline to produce electroactive polyaniline on the GCE. The resulting sensor, best operated at a working potential as low as 50 mV (vs. SCE) which excludes interference by dissolved oxygen, has a linear response in the 500 nM to 2 mM H2O2 concentration range, and the detection limit is 180 nM. The sensor was successfully applied to the determination of H2O2 in spiked milk and fetal bovine serum samples.

An electrochemical microsensor for chloramphenicol (CAP) was fabricated by introducing magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) onto the surface of activated carbon fibers. This microsensor exhibited increased electrochemical response toward CAP because of the synergetic effect of the Fe3O4 NPs and the carbon fibers. Cyclic voltammograms were acquired and displayed three stable and irreversible redox peaks in pH 7.0 solution. Under optimized conditions, the cathodic current peaks at ?0.67 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). The calibration plot is linear in the 40 pM to 1 μM CAP concentration range, with a 17 pM detection limit (at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3). The sensor was applied to the determination of CAP in spiked sediment samples. In our perception, this electrocatalytic platform provided a useful tool for fast, portable, and sensitive analysis of chloramphenicol.

A conducting polymer composite was prepared from nano-sized hydroxyaptite (nHAp) doped into poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and then electrodeposited on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The nHAp carries carboxy groups and therefore is negatively charged at moderate pH value. When doped into PEDOT (PEDOT-nHAp), it forms a uniform and stable film that exhibits low electrochemical impedance, a large specific surface, and high activity toward the electrochemical oxidation of nitrite. Under optimized conditions and at a relatively low working potential of 0.78 V (vs. SCE), the modified GCE exhibited a linear amperometric response in the 0.25 μM to 1.05 mM nitrite concentration range, and the limit of detection is as low as 83 nM.

The authors describe a method for signal amplification of label-free voltammetric immunosensors. A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with Prussian Blue-platinum nanoparticles (PB-PtNPs) as a redox-active species that gives a strong amperometric signal at 0.18 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). Benefitting from the excellent electrical conductivity and the strong catalytic activity to H2O2, the modified GCE gives a strongly enhanced signal. The PB-PtNPs were incorporated into a polyaniline (PANI) hydrogel to further enhance the signal. The signal response of the PB-PtNP-PANI/GCE is larger by a factor of 7.6 than that of PB-PtNP/GCE. In order to further improve electrical conductivity and immobilize antibody, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were deposited on the surface of the PB-PtNP-PANI hydrogel. The AuNP-PB-PtNP-PANI hydrogel nanocomposite on the GCE was used in an immunosensor for the model analyte carcinoma antigen 125 (CA125), a biomarker for epithelial ovarian cancer, by immobilizing the respective antibody on the modified GCE. A linear response found for the 0.01 to 5000 U mL?1 CA125 concentration range, with a detection limit of 4.4 mU mL?1 (at an S/N ratio of 3). The electrochemical sensitivity is as high as 119.76 μA·(U/mL)?1·cm?2. The detection of CA125 in human serum showed satisfactory accuracy compared to a commercial chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (CMIA).

This study describes an amperometric sensor for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) that uses an ITO glass electrode which was modified with a nanocomposite consisting of electrochemically reduced graphene oxide and gold nanoclusters (AuNCs). The sensor was used to quantify extracellular H2O2 released from human neuroblastoma cells of type SH-SY5Y. The calibration plot, established best at a working voltage of ?0.4 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) is linear in the 40 nmol?L?1 to 2 μmol?L?1 concentration range, and the detection limit is 20 nmol?L?1 (at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3). The method was further applied to study bupivacaine-induced cell damage and the protective effects of α-lipoic acid. The study indicated that pretreatment of the cells with lipoic acid retards cell damage induced by bupivacaine. The sensor can be easily fabricated, is disposable and highly sensitive. The sensor is perceived to represent an alternative for studying the interactions of drugs with cells, and as an effective tool to quantify cell-secreted H2O2.

The authors describe a voltammetric immunoassay for the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). It is based on the use of a self-assembled magnetic nanocomposite as multifunctional signal amplification platform. The core of the nanocomposite consists of Fe3O4 microspheres, and the shell of zirconium hexacyanoferrate loaded with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs@ZrHCF@Fe3O4). The material was synthesized by an electrostatic self-assembly process which is caused by the strong interaction between cyano groups and AuNPs. The surface of the Fe3O4 microspheres was functionalized with amino groups to facilitate the immobilization of ZrHCF which acts as an electron mediator. The nanocomposite was placed on a glassy carbon electrode which then displays noteworthy electrocatalytic activity toward the reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The AuNPs serve as a support for the immobilization of antibodies by the interaction between AuNPs and amino groups on antibodies to construct a covalent Au-N bond. This facilitates electron transfer on the electrode surface using H2O2 as the electrochemical probe. Square wave voltammetry (measured typically at +0.2 V vs. SCE) was carried out to record the electrochemical behavior. Under the optimal conditions, a response is linear in the 0.5 pg·mL?1 to 50 ng·mL?1 CEA concentration range, and the detection limit is as low as 0.15 pg·mL?1 (S/N =?3). The method is selective, highly stable and acceptably reproducible.

A nanocomposite prepared from reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is used in an electrochemical aptasensor for the sensitive and selective determination of the antibiotic chloramphenicol (CAP). The nanocomposite was obtained by electrostatic assembly of AgNPs on the surface of polyelectrolyte-functionalized rGO and then used to modify a glassy carbon electrode. The biosensor is then obtained by immobilizing the aptamer against CAP. When incubated with solutions of CAP, the sensor surface is loaded with CAP due to aptamer recognition. The captured CAP can be electrochemically reduced to yield a current that is strongly enhanced as a result of the excellent electrocatalysis property of the graphene/AgNP-nanocomposite. Under optimum conditions, the calibration plot is linear in the 0.01 to 35 μM concentration range, with a 2 nM detection limit (at 3σ). The sensor is reproducible, stable, selective over homologous interferents, and performs excellently when analyzing CAP in milk samples.

Cardiac troponin (cTn) is a specific and sensitive biomarker for diagnosis of myocardial injury. Hence, numerous kinds of biosensors for cTn have been reported. Electrochemical methods possess inherent advantages over other kinds of sensors because they are specific, sensitive, and simple. By combining the advantages of electrochemical biosensors with those of nanomaterials, some interesting electrochemical biosensor for cTn can be obtained where the nanomaterials trigger substantial signal amplification. This review (with 101 refs.) summarizes the state of the art in electrochemical biosensing of cTn based on the use of nanomaterials. Following an introduction into the field, the use of nanomaterials in electrochemical sensing is briefly discussed. A next section covers strategies for signal amplification by using nanomaterials, with subsections on the use of nanowires, nanotubes, graphenes, and various other nanoparticles. The article concludes with a discussion of the prospects of nanomaterial-based signal amplification and on future research directions.

A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) coated on monolayer graphene (AuNP/MG) by direct in situ sputtering of AuNPs on CVD-generated graphene. This process avoids complicated polymer transfer and polymer cleaning processes and affords AuNPs with a clean surface. The monolayer graphene is ductile and well dispersed. The clean surface of the AuNPs renders this sensor superior to GCEs modified with AuNPs on reduced graphene oxide in terms of the amperometric non-enzymatic determination of hydrogen peroxide. The detection limit is 10 nM (S/N = 3) at 0.55 V (vs. SCE), which is lower than that for similar methods, and the response time is as short as 2 s. Another attractive feature of the sensor is its feasibility for large-scale production via CVD and sputtering.

The authors describe a composite material prepared from carbon nanohorns and poly(2-aminopyridine) that was obtained by electrochemical polymerization of 2-aminopyridine on carbon nanohorns. The material was used to modify a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to obtain a sensor for non-enzymatic determination of hydrogen peroxide. The modified GCE was characterized by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and chronoamperometry. The modified electrode is shown to display excellent electrical conductivity and catalytic activity towards hydrogen peroxide, mainly due to the large specific surface area of carbon nanohorns, the good electron charge transfer properties resulting from the use of poly(2-aminopyridine), and their synergistic effect. The response of the modified GCE (best operated at a working potential of ?0.45 V vs. SCE) to H2O2 is linear in the 0.05 to 8 mM concentration range. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantitation (LOQ) are 3.6 μM and 12.4 μM, respectively. The electrode is selective, stable and reproducible, this making it a promising tool for non-enzymatic determination of hydrogen peroxide.
