In this study, a HMW anionic co-polymer of 40:60 wt/wt NaAMPS/acrylamide was used as a drag reducing polymer (DRP) for oil–water flow in a horizontal 25.4 mm ID acrylic pipe. The effect of polymer concentration in the master solution and after injection in the main water stream, oil and water velocities, and pipe length on drag reduction (DR) was investigated. The injected polymer had a noticeable effect on flow patterns and their transitions. Stratified and dual continuous flows extended to higher superficial oil velocities while annular flow changed to dual continuous flow. The results showed that as low as 2 ppm polymer concentration was sufficient to create a significant drag reduction across the pipe. DR was found to increase with polymer concentration increased and reached maximum plateau value at around 10 ppm. The results showed that the drag reduction effect tends to increase as superficial water velocity increased and eventually reached a plateau at Usw of around 1.3 m/s. At Usw > 1.0 m/s, the drag reduction decreased as Uso increased while at lower water velocities, drag reduction is fluctuating with respect to Uso. A maximum DR of about 60% was achieved at Uso = 0.14 m/s while only 45% was obtained at Uso = 0.52 m/s. The effectiveness of the DRP was found to be independent of the polymer concentration in the master solution and to some extent pipe length. The friction factor correlation proposed by Al-Sarkhi et al. (2011) for horizontal flow of oil–water using DRPs was found to underpredict the present experimental pressure gradient data.  相似文献

The paper reports the results of experimental study of the flow of hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) solutions with addition of sodium salicylate (NaSal) in the rough pipes. Measurements were performed in the range of the surfactant concentration from 200 to 400 ppm at a constant molar ratio CTAC/NaSal of 1:2. Five pipes of the relative roughness k/D varying from 1.2 × 10?2 to 5.6 × 10?2, obtained by the covering of inner surface of the pipes with glued silicon carbide particles of different size, were studied. The roughness was observed to increase the drag of flow of CTAC/NaSal solutions already at Reynolds numbers higher than 800. With increasing relative roughness k/D, the critical value of Reynolds number, at which the drag reduction disappears, was found to decrease. However, no influence of the roughness on the critical shear stress was noted. The ratio of the critical Reynolds number for rough pipes to that of hydraulically smooth pipes was independent of the surfactant concentration. The degree of drag reduction by the flow of surfactants was greater in rough pipes than in smooth pipes.  相似文献

Pressure drops in the flow through micro-orifices and capillaries were measured for silicone oils, aqueous solutions of polyethylene glycol (PEG), and surfactant aqueous solutions. The diameter of micro-orifices ranged from 5 μm to 400 μm. The corresponding length/diameter ratio was from 4 to 0.05 and capillary diameters were 105 μm and 450 μm. The following results were obtained: silicone oils of 10?6 m2/s and 10?5 m2/s in kinematic viscosity generated a reduction of pressure drop (RPD), that is, drag reduction, similar to the RPD of water and a glycerol/water mixture reported in the previous paper by the present authors. When RPD occurred, the pressure drop (PD) of silicone oils of 10?6 m2/s and 10?5 m2/s had nearly the same magnitude. Namely, the difference in viscosity did not influence RPD. A 103 ppm aqueous solution of PEG20000 provided almost the same PD as that of PEG8000 for the 400 μm to 15 μm orifices, but a greater PD than that of PEG8000 for the 10 μm to 5 μm orifices. A non-ionic surfactant and a cationic surfactant were highly effective in RPD compared with anionic surfactants: the non-ionic and cationic surfactant solutions had PD one order of magnitude lower than that of water under some flow conditions in the concentration range from 1 ppm to 104 ppm, but the anionic surfactant solutions did not generate RPD except in the case of the smallest orifice of 5 μm in diameter. The PD of the non-ionic surfactant solution showed a steep rise at a Reynolds number (Ret) for 400 μm to 15 μm orifices. The Ret provides the relationship Ret = K/D, where D is the orifice diameter, and K is a constant of 2 × 10?2 m for the 100–20 μm orifices irrespective of liquid concentration. Capillary flow experiment revealed that the PEG, non-ionic and cationic surfactant solutions generated RPD also in a laminar flow through the capillary of 105 μm in diameter, but not in the flow through the capillary of 450 μm in diameter. In order to clarify the cause of RPD, an additional experiment was carried out by changing the orifice material from metal to acrylic resin. The result gave a different appearance of RPD, suggesting that RPD is related to an interfacial phenomenon between the liquid and wall. The large RPDs found in the present experiment are very interesting from both academic and practical viewpoints.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulation of viscoelastic turbulent channel flows up to the maximum drag reduction (MDR) limit has been performed. The simulation results in turn have been used to develop relationships between the flow and fluid rheological parameters, i.e. maximum chain extensibility, Reynolds number, Reτ, and Weissenberg number, Weτ and percent drag reduction (%DR) as well as the slope increment of the mean velocity profile. Moreover, based on the trends observed in the mean velocity profile and the overall momentum balance three different regimes of drag reduction (DR), namely, low drag reduction (LDR; 0  %DR  20), high drag reduction (HDR; 20  %DR  52) and MDR (52  %DR  74) have been identified and mathematical expressions for the eddy viscosity in these regimes are presented. It is found that both in LDR and HDR regimes the eddy viscosity varies with the distance from the channel wall. However, in the MDR regime the ratio of the eddy viscosity to the Newtonian one tends to a very small value around 0.1 within the channel. Based on these expressions a procedure that relies on the DNS predictions of the budgets of momentum and viscoelastic shear stress is developed for evaluating the mean velocity profile.  相似文献

The rheological properties of 1–50 ppm poly α-olefins in Varsol 80 were studied using laminar and Taylor flows. In Taylor flow, all the studied poly α-olefins displayed polymer induced drag reduction and polymer scission. The measurements were carried out using a commercial rheometer equipped with a standard double-gap sample holder with axial symmetry. We find that this particular instrument even at the maximum obtainable geometrically averaged shear rate of 15,000 s−1 yields, an accuracy and a reproducibility better than ±2.5%. This unique precision for measurements in the presence of Taylor vortices, the small amounts of sample and time needed to carry out the measurements, and the general availability of the rheometer, suggests that these previously unexplored properties of this instrument will be of significant value for future investigations of polymer induced drag reduction.  相似文献

This work presents the investigation for an organized turbulent structure in a drag-reducing flow of dilute surfactant solution by utilizing a particle image velocimetry system to perform the pattern recognition technique on a trajectory in four quadrants of streamwise and wall-normal velocity fluctuations. The pattern recognition is added to a new algorithm in order to directly capture the spatial rotation motion. The Reynolds number based on the channel height and bulk mean velocity was set to 1.5 × 104. Surfactant solution with a weight concentration of 150 ppm was employed and the drag reduction rate was 65%. In the drag-reducing flow, we observe increased frequencies of occurrence of the flow events that correspond to a meandering motion in the wall-normal direction of the high-and low-speed regions. Three findings from investigation of the ensemble-averaged Reynolds shear stress and vortex structure are as follows: (i) the Reynolds shear stress in the large fluctuation range occurs in the narrow region; (ii) Size, strength, arrangement and inclination in the spatial vortex structure in the drag-reducing flow differ from those of the water; and (iii) all trajectory contributions for the wall friction coefficient decrease. Finally, we interpreted that the viscoelasticity characterizing the viscoelastic stress and relaxation time in rheological properties of the flow changes specific elementary vortex for the drag-reducing flow, and the trajectories of each flow pattern change drastically.  相似文献

Static-type samplers are required for sampling corrosive, toxic, high-temperature, or radioactive liquid–solid fluids. We have designed a compact reverse flow diverter pumping system for transferring liquid–solid mixtures. In accordance with the Venturi principle, an acceptable volume of liquid–solid fluid is automatically collected into a sampling bottle. The effects of sampling needle sizes, sectional area of the T-section, solid concentration, and liquid viscosity on the performance of fluidic samplers were experimentally investigated. The sample volume increased upon the reduction of the sampling needle length and the increase of the sectional area of the T-section, but decreased with the increase of solid concentration and liquid viscosity. Unbiased samples of acceptable volume were produced by the proposed fluidic sampler, even at 10.21 mPa s liquid viscosity, 35 wt% solid concentration, and 6.74 m sampling height.  相似文献

Liquid metal is an important type of energy transport carrier in nuclear reactors, such as in accelerator-driven sub-critical systems, fusion reactors and spallation neutron source devices. It is necessary to conduct research for bubbles rising in a liquid metal under different magnetic field intensities. The Perspex container is positioned concentrically inside a transverse magnetic field, which provides a homogeneous DC longitudinal magnetic field that passes through the fluid district. The coils are supplied with maximum field strength of 1.97 T. The equivalent diameter of the bubble is 3.1–5.6 mm. The Ultrasonic Doppler Velocimetry (UDV) method is used to evaluate the internal flow velocity of opaque liquid metals. Research shows that the influence of the Lorenz force on the bubble ascension velocity is not simply positive or negative. The magnetic field inhibits the ascension velocity of small bubbles with diameters of 3.1 mm and 3.4 mm. The terminal velocity for large bubbles with diameters of 4.57 mm, 5.15 mm and 5.6 mm is higher under a weak magnetic field than without a magnetic field. The positive effect happens under strong magnetic intensity. The target is to obtain the hydro-dynamical relationships between the terminal velocity, drag coefficient, the Eötvös number, Reynolds number, and Stuart number in a strong magnetic field using a multiple regression method to reveal that the mechanism of the induced current's restraining influence determines the ascension velocity of the bubble in viscous electric liquids with a strong magnetic field.  相似文献

A fundamental step in the production of an industrial catalyst is its crushing strength assessment. Limited literature exists in which the strength reliability of supported catalysts is investigated from production to their application in a reactor. In this work, cylindrical supports were prepared by pelletizing high porosity γ-alumina powder, and Cu–Zn/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by impregnation of the pelletized γ-alumina supports with an aqueous solution of copper and zinc nitrates. The support-forming variables, such as binder concentration, compaction pressure, calcination temperature, and drying procedure were investigated. The Weibull method was used to analyze the crushing strength data of the supports, and the fresh and used catalysts before and after the low-temperature water gas shift reaction. Support formation at a 50 wt% binder concentration, 1148 MPa compaction pressure, 500 °C calcination temperature, and rapid drying (100 °C, 8 h) led to the maximum support mechanical reliability. The most reliable catalyst with respect to simultaneous appropriate catalytic performance and mechanical strength was prepared from a support with the lowest mean crushing strength (26.25 MPa). This work illustrates the importance of the Weibull modulus as a useful mechanical reliability index in manufacturing a supported solid catalyst.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were carried out to study the effects of sand particles on circular sand–water wall jets. Mean and turbulence characteristics of sand particles in the sand–water wall jets were measured for different sand concentrations co ranging from 0.5% to 2.5%. Effects of sand particle size on the centerline sand velocity of the jets were evaluated for sand size ranging from 0.21 mm to 0.54 mm. Interesting results with the range of measurements are presented in this paper. It was found that the centerline sand velocity of the wall jets with larger particle size were 15% higher than the jets with smaller particle size. Concentration profiles in the vertical direction showed a peak value at x/d = 5 (where x is the longitudinal distance from the nozzle and d is the nozzle diameter) and the sand concentration decreased linearly for x/d > 5. Experimental results showed that the turbulence level enhanced from the nozzle to x/d = 10. For sand–water wall jets with a higher concentration (co = 1.5–2.5%), the turbulence intensity became smaller than the corresponding single-phase wall jets by 34% due to turbulent modulation. A modified logarithmic formulation was introduced to model the longitudinal turbulent intensity at the centerline and along the axis of the jet.  相似文献

An experimental investigation was performed on a swirling flow of dilute surfactant solution with deformed free-surface in a cylindrical container driven by the constantly rotating bottom wall. The purpose of the experiment was to estimate weak viscoelasticity in the tested surfactant solutions as well as to investigate the flow characteristics. The tested fluid was an aqueous solution of CTAC (CTAC: cetyltrimethyl ammonium chloride), which is a cationic surfactant. Water, 40 ppm, 60 ppm and 200 ppm CTAC solution flows were tested at Froude numbers ranging from 2.59 to 16.3. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to measure the secondary velocity field in the meridional plane. The deformed free-surface level was extracted from the PIV images. At a similar Froude number, the depth of the dip formed at the center region of the free surface was decreased for CTAC solution flow compared with water flow. The inertia-driven vortex at the up-right corner in the meridional plane becomes more and more weakened with increase of the solution concentration or viscoelasticity. Through analyzing the overall force balance compared with water flow, the first normal stress difference characterizing the viscoelasticity was estimated for the dilute CTAC solution flows. The result supports the viscoelasticity-based turbulent drag-reduction mechanism of surfactant solution flow.  相似文献

The motion of single Argon bubbles rising in the eutectic alloy GaInSn under the influence of a DC longitudinal magnetic field (parallel to the direction of bubble motion) was examined. The magnetic field strength was varied up to 0.3 T corresponding to a magnetic interaction parameter N (which measures the ratio of electromagnetic forces to inertial forces) slightly greater than 1. The liquid metal was at rest in a cylindrical container. Bubble and liquid velocities were measured using ultrasound Doppler velocimetry (UDV). The measured bubble terminal velocity showed oscillations indicating a zigzag movement of ellipsoidal bubbles. For small bubbles (de  4.6 mm) an increase of the drag coefficient with increasing magnetic interaction parameter N was observed, whereas for larger bubbles (de  5.4 mm) the application of the magnetic field reduces the drag coefficient. The measurements revealed a distinct electromagnetic damping of the bubble induced liquid velocity leading to more rectilinear bubble trajectories when the magnetic field is applied. Moreover, significant modifications of the bubble wake structure were observed. Raising of the magnetic field strength caused an enlargement of the eddies in the wake. The Strouhal number decreases with increasing magnetic interaction parameter N.  相似文献

A continuous dichotomous beta gauge monitor was used to characterize the hourly content of PM2.5, PM10–2.5, and Black Carbon (BC) over a 12-month period in an urban street canyon of Hong Kong. Hourly vehicle counts for nine vehicle classes and meteorological data were also recorded. The average weekly cycles of PM2.5, PM10–2.5, and BC suggested that all species are related to traffic, with high concentrations on workdays and low concentrations over the weekends. PM2.5 exhibited two comparable concentrations at 10:00–11:00 (63.4 μg/m3) and 17:00–18:00 (65.0 μg/m3) local time (LT) during workdays, corresponding to the hours when the numbers of diesel-fueled and gasoline-fueled vehicles were at their maximum levels: 3179 and 2907 h−1, respectively. BC is emitted mainly by diesel-fueled vehicles and this showed the highest concentration (31.2 μg/m3) during the midday period (10:00–11:00 LT) on workdays. A poor correlation was found between PM2.5 concentration and wind speed (R = 0.51, P-value > 0.001). In contrast, the concentration of PM10–2.5 was found to depend upon wind speed and it increased with obvious statistical significance as wind speed increased (R = 0.98, P-value < 0.0001).  相似文献

We consider two-dimensional, inertia-free, flow of a constant-viscosity viscoelastic fluid obeying the FENE-CR equation past a cylinder placed symmetrically in a channel, with a blockage ratio of 0.5. Through numerical simulations we show that the flow becomes unsteady when the Deborah number (using the usual definition) is greater than De  1.3, for an extensibility parameter of the model of L2 = 144. The transition from steady to unsteady flow is characterised by a small pulsating recirculation zone of size approximately equal to 0.15 cylinder radius attached to the downstream face of the cylinder. There is also a rise in drag coefficient, which shows a sinusoidal variation with time. The results suggest a possible triggering mechanism leading to the steady three-dimensional Gortler-type vortical structures, which have been observed in experiments of the flow of a viscoelastic fluid around cylinders. The results reveal that the reason for failure of the search for steady numerical solutions at relatively high Deborah numbers is that the two-dimensional flow separates and eventually becomes unsteady. For a lower extensibility parameter, L2 = 100, a similar recirculation is formed given rise to a small standing eddy behind the cylinder which becomes unsteady and pulsates in time for Deborah numbers larger than De  4.0–4.5.  相似文献

Previously we had developed a microfluidic system that can be easily fabricated by bending a stainless-steel tube into large circular loops. In this study, a fast and continuous preparation method for superfine TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) was developed for the aforementioned microfluidic system. The proposed method can yield anatase TiO2 in 3.5 min, in contrast to the traditional hydrothermal reaction method, which requires hours or even days. Different reaction conditions, such as reaction temperature (120–200 °C), urea concentration (20–100 g/L), and tube length (5–20 m) were investigated. X-ray diffraction and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis indicate that the as-prepared TiO2-NPs have crystalline sizes of 4.1–5.8 nm and specific surface areas of 250.7–330.7 m2/g. Transmission electron microscopy images show that these TiO2-NPs have an even diameter of approximately 5 nm. Moreover, because of their small crystalline sizes and large specific surface areas, most of these as-prepared TiO2-NPs exhibit considerably better absorption and photocatalytic performance with methylene blue than commercial P5 TiO2 does.  相似文献

A bioadsorbent composed of magnetic silica nanoparticles encapsulated by chitosan microspheres was prepared by the emulsion cross-linking method, and it was then modified with quaternary ammonium groups by reaction with ethylenediamine and glycidyl trimethylammonium chloride. Characterization of the bioadsorbent indicated that it was highly acid resistant and magnetically responsive. The bioadsorbent was then used to remove Cr(VI) from acidic aqueous solution. The results of batch experiments indicated that the optimal pH value was 2.5, and the adsorbent exhibited low pH dependence. The maximum adsorption capacity was 233.1 mg/g at pH 2.5 and 25 °C, and the equilibrium time was determined to be 40–120 min depending on the initial Cr(VI) concentration. The adsorbent could be effectively regenerated using a mixture of 0.3 mol/L NaOH and 0.3 mol/L NaCl with a desorption efficiency of 95.6%, indicating high reusability. In conclusion, the bioadsorbent shows potential for Cr(VI) removal from acidic wastewater.  相似文献

A commercial product of carbon nano-particles, Cabot MONACH 1300 pigment black (CMPB), was studied for basic structural information and electrochemical performance in neutral aqueous electrolytes, aiming at applications in supercapacitors. As confirmed by SEM and HRTEM, the CMPB had a hierarchical structure, containing basic 10 nm nano-spheres which combined into ca. 50 nm agglomerates which further aggregated into larger particles of micrometres. The capacitance of this commercial material was found to increase with decreasing the size of hydrous cation (Li+  Na+  K+), instead of the cation crystal radius (K+  Na+  Li+) when coupled with the same anion (Cl). In electrolytes with the same cation concentration (K+), changing the anion from the larger dianion (SO42−) to the smaller monoanion (Cl) also increased the capacitance at high potential scan rates (>50 mV/s). Increasing electrolyte concentration produced expected effect, including raising the electrode capacitance, but lowering the equivalent series resistance (ESR), charge transfer resistance (CTR), and the diffusion resistance. At higher temperatures, the CMPB exhibited slightly higher capacitance, which does not agree with the Gouy–Chapman theory on electric double layer (EDL). A hypothesis is proposed to account for the capacitance increase with temperature as a result of the CMPB opening up some micro-pores for more ions to access in response to the temperature increase.  相似文献

Solutions of flexible high-molecular-weight polymers or some kinds of surfactant are viscoelastic fluids. The elastic stress is induced in such viscoelastic fluid flows and grows nonlinearly with the flow-rate resulting in many particular flow phenomena, including purely elastic instability. The purely elastic instability can even result in a kind of chaotic fluid motion, the so-called elastic turbulence, which is a recently discovered flow phenomenon and arises at arbitrarily small Reynolds number. By using viscoelastic surfactant solution, we attempted to create the peculiar chaotic fluid motions in several specially designed microchannels in which flows with curvilinear streamlines can be generated. The viscoelastic working fluids were aqueous solutions of surfactant, CTAC/NaSal (cetyltrimethyl ammonium chloride/sodium salicylate). CTAC solutions with weight concentration of 200 ppm (part per million) and 1000 ppm, respectively, at room temperature were tested. For comparison, water flows in the same microchannels were also visualized. The Reynolds numbers for all the microchannel flows were quite small (for solution flows, the Reynolds numbers were the order of or smaller than one) and the flow should be definitely laminar for Newtonian fluid. It was found that the regular laminar flow patterns for low-Reynolds-number Newtonian fluid flow in different microchannels were strongly deformed in solution flows: either asymmetrical flow structures or time-dependent vortical fluid motions appeared. These chaotic flow phenomena were considered to be induced by the viscoelasticity of the CTAC solutions. Discussions about the potential applications using such kind of chaotic fluid motions were also made.  相似文献

Three-dimensional particle tracking velocimetry (3D-PTV) is applied to particle-laden pipe flows at Reynolds number 10,300, based on the bulk velocity and the pipe diameter. The effects of flow direction (upward or downward) and mean concentration (in the range 0.5 × 10−5–3.2 × 10−5) on the production of turbulence are assessed for inertial particles with a Stokes number equal to 2.3, based on the particle relaxation time and viscous scales. The turbulence production and the Kolmogorov constant, both measured for particle laden flows in upflow and downflow, allowed for the derivation of a break-up criterion as a function of the radial coordinate. This criterion predicts the maximum possible particle size before break-up may occur. It is shown that the maximum particle size is bigger at the pipe centerline than in the near-wall zone by more than a factor of 5. Flow direction affects the particle concentration profile, with wall peaking in downflow and core peaking in upflow. This affects both the residence time and the maximum particle size, the latter by 7%.  相似文献

The ability to reduce the frictional drag in turbulent flow in pipes and channels by addition of a small amount of a high molecular weight polymer has application in myriad industries and processes. Here, the drag reduction properties of the polyelectrolyte xanthan are explored in differing solvent environments (salt free versus salt solution) and delivery configurations (homogeneous versus stock solution dilution). Drag reduction effectiveness increases when an entangled xanthan solution is diluted compared to solutions prepared in the dilute regime. Based on dynamic rheological measurements of the elastic modulus, residual entanglements and network structure are hypothesized to account for the observed change in drag reduction effectiveness. Drag reduction effectiveness is unchanged by the presence of salt when the stock solution concentration is sufficiently above the critical concentration cD. Finally, the drag reduction effectiveness decreases with time when diluted from an entangled stock solution but remains greater than the homogeneous case after more than 24 h.  相似文献
