Polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) made of sulfonated poly(arylene ether)s consisted of 3,3′‐disulfo‐4,4′‐dichlorodiphenylsulfone disodium salt, 2,6‐dichlorobenzonitrile, and one of three dihydroxynaphthalene isomers (2,6‐, 2,7‐, and 1,5‐dihydroxynaphthalene, abbreviated as 2,6‐N, 2,7‐N, and 1,5‐N, respectively) were prepared with similar level of inherent viscosity and ion exchange capacity, and structural effect of the catenation in dihydroxynaphthalene isomers on membrane properties was compared. In the case of membranes for PEM fuel cell application with relatively high ion exchange capacity around 2.1 mequiv/g, three copolymers showed almost the same proton conductivity; however, swelling in water increased with the following order: 1,5‐N < 2,6‐N < 2,7N. In the case of direct methanol fuel cell membranes with lower ion exchange capacity around 1.5 mequiv/g, no remarkable difference in proton conductivity was also observed in three isomeric copolymers and swelling property and methanol permeability were lower in 1,5‐N and 2,6‐N copolymers than 2,7‐N copolymer. These tendencies show that higher rigidity or energy barrier for conformational change of polymer chain gives better performance of PEM for fuel cells with superior dimensional stability. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To prepare a crosslinked hybrid polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) with high chemical stability, a silane monomer, namely p‐styryltrimethoxysilane (StSi), was first grafted to poly(ethylene‐co‐tetrafluoroethylene) (ETFE) film by γ‐ray preirradiation. Hydrolysis‐condensation and sulfonation were then performed on the StSi‐grafted ETFE (StSi‐g‐ETFE) films to give them crosslinks and proton conductibility, respectively. Thus, a crosslinked proton‐conducting hybrid PEM was obtained. The crosslinks introduced by the silane‐condensation have an inorganic ? Si? O? Si? structure, which enhance the chemical and thermal stabilities of the PEM. The effect of the timing of the hydrolysis‐condensation (before or after sulfonation) and the sulfonation method (by chlorosulfonic acid or H2SO4) on the properties of the resulting hybrid PEMs such as ion‐exchange capacity, proton conductivity, water uptake, chemical stability, and methanol permeability were investigated to confirm their applicability in fuel cells. We conclude that the properties of the new crosslinked hybrid StSi‐grafted PEMs are superior to divinylbenzene (DVB)‐crosslinked styrene‐grafted membranes. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of poly(arylene ether sulfone)‐block‐sulfonated polybutadiene (PAES‐b‐sPB) with different ion exchange capacities (IECs) were synthesized and evaluated as proton exchange membranes (PEMs) for possible applications in fuel cells. These sulfonated block copolymers were synthesized via condensation reaction between modified PAES and PB prepolymers, followed by selective post‐sulfonation of PB blocks using acetyl sulfate as the sulfonating reagent. The sulfonic groups were only attached onto PB blocks due to the high reactivity of double bonds to acetyl sulfate. The success of synthesis and selective post‐sulfonation were all confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra. PAES‐b‐sPB had good film‐forming ability and thermal stability. Mechanical properties of membranes varied with the sulfonation. The presence of sulfonic groups increased the tensile strength and Young's modulus but decreased the elongation at break. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed large ionic aggregates in membranes. Phase separation as well as the interconnected sulfonate groups which only localized on flexible PB blocks led to these ionic domains. The proton conductivity increased with the increasing IEC and temperature. With relatively low IEC, most membranes still exhibited sufficient proton conductivity. The above results indicated this strategy could be a prospective choice to prepare novel PEMs. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this article, we report the syntheses and characterizations of a series of novel block polyelectrolytes, poly(styrene‐block‐sulfonated hydroxystyrene) (PS‐b‐sPHS), containing pendant sulfonic acid groups attached to the backbone via propyl spacers in the sPHS domain. PS‐b‐sPHS with various compositions were synthesized via anionic polymerization and the following analogous chemistry to achieve accurate control of molecular weight (Mw), narrow polydispersity and high degree of sulfonation. Proton exchange membranes (PEMs) were prepared from PS‐b‐sPHS with sulfonic acids in either potassium salts or tetra‐alkylammonium salts via solvent casting and following treatments. Some unique morphologies, such as hallow channels and lamellar arrangement of strings of beads, were observed as a consequence of equilibrium between microphase separation and columbic interactions between polyelectrolytes. The transportation properties were found to closely relate to the morphologies of the PEMs. The combination of microphase separation of block polyelectrolytes and freedom of movement of pendent alkylsulfonic acids was demonstrated to effectively enhance the proton transport and suppress the methanol crossover for the PEMs, leading to the selectivity higher than Nafion 117 by five times at most. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel highly phosphonated poly(N‐phenylacrylamide) ( PDPAA ) with an ion‐exchange capacity (IEC) of 6.72 mequiv/g was synthesized by the radical polymerization of N‐[2,4‐bis(diethoxyphosphinoyl)phenyl]acrylamide ( DEPAA ), followed by the hydrolysis with trimethylsilyl bromide. Then, the crosslinked PDPAA membrane was successfully prepared by the electrophilic substitution reaction between the aromatic rings of PDPAA and the carbocation formed from hexamethoxymethylmelamine (CYMEL) as a crosslinker in the presence of methanesulfonic acid. The crosslinked PDPAA membrane had high oxidative stability against Fenton's reagent at room temperature. The proton conductivity of the crosslinked PDPAA membrane was 8.8 × 10?2 S/cm at 95% relative humidity (RH) and 80 °C, which was comparable to Nafion 112. Under low RH, the crosslinked PDPAA membrane showed the proton conductivity of 1.9 × 10?3 and 4.7 × 10?5 S/cm at 50 and 30% RH, respectively. The proton conductivity of the crosslinked PDPAA membrane lied in the highest class among the reported phosphonated polymers, and, consequently, the very high local concentration of the acids of PDPAA (IEC = 6.72 mequiv/g) achieved high and effective proton conduction under high RH. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New classes of fluorinated polymer–polysilsesquioxane nanocomposites have been designed and synthesized. The synthesis method includes radical polymerization using the functional benzoyl peroxide initiator for the telechelic fluorinated polymers with perfluorosulfonic acids in the side chains and a subsequent in situ sol–gel condensation of the prepared triethoxylsilane‐terminated fluorinated polymers with oxide precursors. The telechelic polymer and nanocomposites have been carefully characterized by 1H and 19F NMR, FTIR, TGA, and TEM. The ion‐exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake, the state of the absorbed water, and transport properties of the composite membranes have been extensively studied as a function of the content and structure of the fillers. Unlike the conventional Nafion/silica composites, the proton conductivity of the prepared membranes increases steadily with the addition of small amounts of the polysilsesquioxane fillers. In particular, the sulfopropylated polysilsesquioxane‐based nanocomposites display proton conductivities greater than Nafion. This is attributed to the presence of pendant sulfonic acids in the fillers, which increases IEC and offers continuous proton transport channels between the fillers and the polymer matrix. The methanol permeability of the prepared membranes has also been examined. Lower methanol permeability and higher electrochemical selectivity than those of Nafion have been demonstrated in the polysilsesquioxane‐based nanocomposites. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel polymers with controlled microstructures were prepared and studied to further advance the understanding of structure–property relationships of proton conducting membranes. PAN‐gmacPSSA membranes, which contained poly(styrenesulfonic acid) (PSSA) grafts of defined graft length, are compared with PVDF‐g‐PSSA membranes, prepared by radiation‐grafting, and Nafion® 117. The intrinsic properties of PAN‐gmacPSSA membranes are insensitive to the macromonomer graft length but are highly dependent on the ion exchange capacities (IEC). Increasing the IEC increases the content of free water absorbed by the membrane. Self‐diffusion coefficients of water in water‐swollen PAN‐gmacPSSA were found to be similar to that of N117, despite PAN‐gmacPSSA's higher water content. Of the polymers studied, PAN‐gmacPSSA exhibited the lowest methanol permeability, which is explained on the basis of it containing a more tortuous ionic network. Methanol permeability decreased with decreasing volume of free water. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 44: 2240–2252, 2006  相似文献

A new bisphenol monomer containing a pair of electron‐rich tetra‐arylmethane units was designed and synthesized. Based on this monomer, along with commercial 4,4′‐(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphenol A and 4,4′‐difluorobenzophenone, a series of novel poly(arylene ether ketone)s containing octasulfonated segments of varying molar percentage (x) (6F‐SPAEK‐x) were successfully synthesized by polycondensation reactions, followed by sulfonation. Tough, flexible, and transparent membranes, exhibiting excellent thermal stabilities and mechanical properties were obtained by casting. 6F‐SPAEK‐x samples exhibited appropriate water uptake and swelling ratios at moderate ion exchange capacities (IECs) and excellent proton conductivities. The highest proton conductivity (215 mS cm−1) is observed for hydrated 6F‐SPAEK‐15 (IEC = 1.68 meq g−1) at 100 °C, which is more than 1.5 times that of Nafion 117. Furthermore, the 6F‐SPAEK‐10 membrane exhibited comparable proton conductivity (102 mS cm−1) to that of Nafion 117 at 80 °C, with a relatively low IEC value (1.26 meq g−1). Even under 30% relative humidity, the 6F‐SPAEK‐20 membrane (2.06 meq g−1) showed adequate conductivity (2.1 mS cm−1) compared with Nafion 117 (3.4 mS cm−1). The excellent comprehensive properties of these membranes are attributed to well‐defined nanophase‐separated structures promoted by strong polarity differences between highly ionized and fluorinated hydrophobic segments. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel sulfonated diamine monomer, 2,2′‐bis(p‐aminophenoxy)‐1,1′‐binaphthyl‐6,6′‐disulfonic acid (BNDADS), was synthesized. A series of sulfonated polyimide copolymers containing 30–80 mol % BNDADS as a hydrophilic component were prepared. The copolymers showed excellent solubility and good film‐forming capability. Atomic force microscopy phase images clearly showed hydrophilic/hydrophobic microphase separation. The relationship between the proton conductivity and degree of sulfonation was examined. The sulfonated polyimide copolymer with 60 mol % BNDADS showed higher proton conductivity (0.0945–0.161 S/cm) at 20–80 °C in liquid water. The membranes exhibited methanol permeability from 9 × 10?8 to 5 × 10?7 cm2/s at 20 °C, which was much lower than that of Nafion (2 × 10?6cm2/s). The copolymers were thermally stable up to 300 °C. The sulfonated polyimide copolymers with 30–60 mol % BNDADS showed reasonable mechanical strength; for example, the maximum tensile strength at break of the sulfonated polyimide copolymer with 40 mol % BNDADS was 80.6 MPa under high moisture conditions. The optimum concentration of BNDADS was found to be 60 mol % from the viewpoint of proton conductivity, methanol permeability, and membrane stability.

The possibility of developing low‐cost commercial grafted and sulfonated Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF‐g‐PSSA) membranes as proton exchange membranes for fuel cell applications have been investigated. PVDF‐g‐PSSA membranes were systematically prepared and examined with the focus of understanding how the polymer microstructure (degree of grafting and sulfonation, ion‐exchange capacity, etc) affects their methanol permeability, water uptake, and proton conductivity. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to characterize the changes of the membrane's microstructure after grafting and sulfonation. The results showed that the PVDF‐g‐PSSA membranes exhibited good thermal stability and lower methanol permeability. The proton conductivity of PVDF‐g‐PSSA membranes was also measured by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy method. It was found that the proton conductivity of PVDF‐g‐PSSA membranes depends on the degree of sulfonation. All the sulfonated membranes show high proton conductivity at 92°C, in the range of 27 to 235 mScm−1, which is much higher than that of Nafion212 (102 mScm−1 at 80°C). The results indicated that the PVDF‐g‐PSSA membranes are particularly promising membranes to be used as polymer electrolyte membranes due to their excellent stability, low methanol permeability, and high proton conductivity.  相似文献

Partially sulfonated poly(aryl ether sulfone) (PESS) was synthesized and methacrylated via reaction with glycidyl methacrylate (PESSGMA) and cross‐linked via radical polymerization with styrene and vinyl‐phosphonic acid (VPA). The chemical structures of the synthesized pre‐polymers were characterized via FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopic methods and molecular weight was determined via GPC. Membranes of these polymers were prepared via solution casting method. The crosslinking of the PESS polymer reduced IEC, proton conductivity, swelling in water, and methanol permeability of the membranes while increasing the modulus and the glass transition temperature. However, the introduction of the VPA comonomer increased the proton conductivity while maintaining excellent resistance to methanol cross‐over, which was significantly higher as compared with both PESS and the commercial Nafion membranes. Membranes of PESSGMA copolymers incorporating VPA, exhibited proton conductivity values at 60 °C in the range of 16–32 mS cm−1 and methanol permeability values in the range of 6.52 × 10−9 – 1.92 × 10−8 cm2 s−1. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Branched sulfonated poly(ether ketone sulfone)s (Br‐SPEKS) were prepared with bisphenol A, bis(4‐fluorophenyl)sulfone, 3,3′‐disodiumsulfonyl‐4,4′‐difluorobenzophenone, and THPE (1,1,1‐tris‐p‐hydroxyphenylethane), respectively, at 180 °C using potassium carbonate in NMP (N‐methylpyrrolidinone). THPE, as a branching agent, was used with 0.4 mol % of bisphenol A to synthesize branched copolymers. Copolymers containing 10–50 mol % disulfonated units were cast from dimethylsulfoxide solutions to form films. Linear sulfonated poly(ether ketone sulfone)s (SPEKS) were also synthesized without THPE. The films were converted from the salt to acid forms with dilute hydrochloric acid. A series of copolymers were studied by Fourier transform infrared, 1H‐NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Sorption experiments were conducted to observe the interaction of sulfonated polymers with water and methanol. The ion‐exchange capacity (IEC), a measure of proton conductivity, was evaluated. The synthesized Br‐SPEKS and SPEKS membranes exhibit conductivities (25 °C) from 1.04 × 10?3 to 4.32 × 10?3 S/cm, water swell from 20.18 to 62.35%, IEC from 0.24 to 0.83 mequiv/g, and methanol diffusion coefficients from 3.2 × 10?7 to 4.7 × 10?7 cm2/S at 25 °C. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work uses a simple “grafting through” approach in the preparation of anhydrous poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)‐g‐PVTri polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs). Alkaline‐treated PVDF was used as a macromolecule in conjunction with vinyltriazole in the graft copolymerization. The obtained polymer was subsequently doped with triflic acid (TA) at different stoichiometric ratios with respect to triazole units and the anhydrous PEMs (PVDF‐g‐PVTri‐(TA)x) were prepared. All samples were characterized by FTIR and 1H NMR. The composition of PVDF‐g‐PVTri was determined by energy dispersive spectroscopy. Thermal properties of the membranes were examined by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The surface roughness and morphology of the membranes were studied using atomic force microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. PVDF‐g‐PVTri‐(TA)3 (C3‐TA3) with a degree of grafting of 47.22% showed a maximum proton conductivity of 0.09 S cm?1 at 150 °C and anhydrous conditions. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. The major risk of using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to modify proton exchange membranes (PEMs) in fuel cells is possible short‐circuiting due to the excellent electrical conductivity of CNTs. In this article, silica‐coated CNTs (SiO2@CNTs) were successfully prepared by a simple sol–gel process and then used as a new additive in the preparation of sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK)‐based composite membranes. The insulated and hydrophilic silica coated on the surface of CNTs not only eliminated the risk of short‐circuiting, but also enhanced the interfacial interaction between CNTs and SPEEK, and hence promoted the homogeneous dispersion of CNTs in the SPEEK matrix. Moreover, compared to the methanol permeability of the pure SPEEK membrane (3.42 × 10?7 cm2 s?1), the SPEEK/SiO2@CNT composite membrane with a SiO2@CNT loading of 5 wt% exhibits almost one order of magnitude decrease of methanol crossover, while the proton conductivity still remained above 10?2 S cm?1 at room temperature. The obtained results expose the possibility of SPEEK/SiO2@CNT membranes to be served as high‐performance PEMs in direct methanol fuel cells. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A series of wholly aromatic sulfonated poly(ether amide)s (SPEAs) containing a sulfonic acid group on the dicarbonyl aromatic ring were prepared via a polycondensation reaction of sulfonated terephthalic acid (STA), terephthalic acid (TA), and aromatic diamine monomers. The degree of sulfonation was readily controlled by adjusting the monomer feed ratio of STA and TA in the polymerization process, and randomly sulfonated polymers with an ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 1.0–1.8 mequiv/g were prepared using this protocol. The chemical structures of randomly sulfonated polymers were characterized using NMR and FT‐IR spectroscopies. Gel permeation chromatography analysis of SPEAs indicated the formation of high‐molecular‐weight sulfonated polymer. Tough and flexible SPEA membranes were obtained from solution of N,N‐dimethylacetamide, and thermogravimetric analysis of these membranes showed a high degree of thermal stability. Compared with previously reported sulfonated aromatic polyamides, these new SPEAs showed a significantly lower water uptake of 10–30%. In proton conductivity measurements, ODA‐SPEA‐70 (IEC = 1.80 mequiv/g), which was obtained from polycondensation of 4,4′‐oxydianiline and 70 mol % STA, showed a comparable proton conductivity (105 mS/cm) to that of Nafion 117 at 80 °C. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An amorphous, organosoluble, fluorine‐containing polybenzimidazole (PBI) was synthesized from 3,3′‐diaminobenzidine and 2,2‐bis(4‐carboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane. The polymer was soluble in N‐methylpyrrolidinone and dimethylacetamide and had an inherent viscosity of 2.5 dL/g measured in dimethylacetamide at a concentration of 0.5 g/dL. The 5% weight loss temperature of the polymer was 520 °C. Proton‐conducting PBI membranes were prepared via solution casting and doped with different amounts of phosphoric acid. In the methanol permeability measurement, the PBI membranes showed much better methanol barrier ability than a Nafion membrane. The proton conductivity of the acid‐doped PBI membranes increased with increasing temperatures and concentrations of phosphoric acid in the polymer. The PBI membranes showed higher proton conductivity than a Nafion 117 membrane at high temperatures. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 4508–4513, 2006  相似文献

A series of soluble, benzimidazole‐based polymers containing sulfonic acid groups (SuPBI) has been synthesized. SuPBI membranes resist extensive swelling in water but are poor proton conductors. When blended with high ion exchange capacity (IEC) sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK), a polymer that has high proton conductivity but poor mechanical integrity, ionic crosslinks form reducing the extent of swelling. The effect of sulfonation of PBI on crosslinking in these blends was gauged through comparison with nonsulfonated analogs. Sulfonic acid groups present in SuPBI compensate for acid groups involved in crosslinking, thereby increasing IEC and proton conductivity of the membrane. When water uptake and proton conductivity were compared to the IEC of blends containing either sulfonated or nonsulfonated PBI, no noticeable distinction between PBI types could be made. Comparisons were also made between these blends and pure SPEEK membranes of similar IEC. Blend membranes exhibit slightly lower maximum proton conductivity than pure SPEEK membranes (60 vs. 75 mS cm?1) but had significantly enhanced dimensional stability upon immersion in water, especially at elevated temperature (80 °C). Elevated temperature measurements in humid environments show increased proton conductivity of the SuPBI membranes when compared with SPEEK‐only membranes of similar IEC (c.f. 55 for the blend vs. 42 mS cm?1 for SPEEK at 80 °C, 90% relative humidity). © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We have prepared nanocomposite proton exchange membranes (PEMs) based on Nafion with sulfonic acid functionalized zeolite beta (AFB) as an additive. 2.5 and 5 wt% AFB composite membranes possess proton conductivity/methanol permeability (selectivity) ratios as much as 93% higher than commercial Nafion 117 at 21 °C, and 63% higher at 80 °C. These 2.5 and 5 wt% AFB composite membranes also outperform commercial Nafion 117 in direct methanol fuel cell performance evaluations. The composite membranes are characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, four-electrode impedance for proton conductivity, two-compartment permeation for methanol crossover, and direct methanol fuel cell performance.  相似文献

We investigated thermal properties of proton exchange membranes (PEMs) prepared by the radiation-induced grafting of styrene into crosslinked-polytetrafluoroethylene films and the subsequent sulfonation for fuel-cell applications. A conventional thermogravimetric analysis was found to be unreliable because the resulting curve varied greatly with the heating rate. Thus, in order to obtain accurate information, we performed an ex-situ heat-treatment analysis, which involved heating of the PEMs at fixed temperatures of 200-350 °C and measurement of their remaining weight, ion exchange capacity (IEC) and proton conductivity (σ) after washing in pure water. The IEC and σ did not change at any temperature up to 200 °C, indicating high thermal stability. At 250 °C, however, the PEM properties deteriorated probably via radical cleavage of the C-S bond between a sulfonic acid group and an aromatic ring, and condensation of two sulfonic acid groups. Finally, the PEM was hot-pressed with two electrodes at 200 °C to produce a good membrane-electrode assembly for a fuel cell.  相似文献
