Generic automorphisms of the universal partial order

We show that the countable universal-homogeneous partial order has a generic automorphism as defined by the second author, namely that it lies in a comeagre conjugacy class of Aut. For this purpose, we work with `determined' partial finite automorphisms that need not be automorphisms of finite substructures (as in the proofs of similar results for other countable homogeneous structures) but are nevertheless sufficient to characterize the isomorphism type of the union of their orbits.

     

Resolutions for free partially commutative monoids

We construct a free resolution for a free partially commutative monoid and, using this resolution, estimate the homological dimension of the monoid.

Let , , , , be the usual operators on classes of rings: and for isomorphic and homomorphic images of rings and , , respectively for subrings, direct, and subdirect products of rings. If is a class of commutative rings with identity (and in general of any kind of algebraic structures), then the class is known to be the variety generated by the class . Although the class is in general a proper subclass of the class for many familiar varieties . Our goal is to give an example of a class of commutative rings with identity such that . As a consequence we will describe the structure of two partially ordered monoids of operators.

The homogeneous spectrum of a graded commutative ring

Suppose is a torsion-free cancellative commutative monoid for which the group of quotients is finitely generated. We prove that the spectrum of a -graded commutative ring is Noetherian if its homogeneous spectrum is Noetherian, thus answering a question of David Rush. Suppose is a commutative ring having Noetherian spectrum. We determine conditions in order that the monoid ring have Noetherian spectrum. If , we show that has Noetherian spectrum, while for each we establish existence of an example where the homogeneous spectrum of is not Noetherian.

Finitely Generated Torsion-free Nilp otent Groups Admitting an Automorphism of Prime Order

Let G be a finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent group and α an automorphism of prime order p of G. If the map φ : G-→ G defined by gφ= [g, α]is surjective, then the nilpotent class of G is at most h(p), where h(p) is a function depending only on p. In particular, if α3= 1, then the nilpotent class of G is at most2.     

Non-Cayley Vertex-Transitive Graphs of Order Twice the Product of Two Odd Primes

For a positive integer n, does there exist a vertex-transitive graph Γ on n vertices which is not a Cayley graph, or, equivalently, a graph Γ on n vertices such that Aut Γ is transitive on vertices but none of its subgroups are regular on vertices? Previous work (by Alspach and Parsons, Frucht, Graver and Watkins, Marusic and Scapellato, and McKay and the second author) has produced answers to this question if n is prime, or divisible by the square of some prime, or if n is the product of two distinct primes. In this paper we consider the simplest unresolved case for even integers, namely for integers of the form n = 2pq, where 2 < q < p, and p and q are primes. We give a new construction of an infinite family of vertex-transitive graphs on 2pq vertices which are not Cayley graphs in the case where p ≡ 1 (mod q). Further, if p ? 1 (mod q), p ≡ q ≡ 3(mod 4), and if every vertex-transitive graph of order pq is a Cayley graph, then it is shown that, either 2pq = 66, or every vertex-transitive graph of order 2pq admitting a transitive imprimitive group of automorphisms is a Cayley graph.

Automorphisms of the endomorphism semigroup of a free monoid or a free semigroup

We determine all isomorphisms between the endomorphism semigroups of free monoids or free semigroups and prove that automorphisms of the endomorphism semigroup of a free monoid or a free semigroup are inner or ``mirror inner". In particular, we answer a question of B. I. Plotkin.

     

Representing the automorphism group of an almost crystallographic group

Let be an almost crystallographic (AC-) group, corresponding to the simply connected, connected, nilpotent Lie group and with holonomy group . If , there is a faithful representation . In case is crystallographic, this condition is known to be equivalent to or . We will show (Example 2.2) that, for AC-groups , this is no longer valid and should be adapted. A generalised equivalent algebraic (and easier to verify) condition is presented (Theorem 2.3). Corresponding to an AC-group and by factoring out subsequent centers we construct a series of AC-groups, which becomes constant after a finite number of terms. Under suitable conditions, this opens a way to represent faithfully in (Theorem 4.1). We show how this can be used to calculate . This is of importance, especially, when is almost Bieberbach and, hence, is known to have an interesting geometric meaning.

     

Symmetries of Contact Metric Manifolds

We study the Lie algebra of infinitesimal isometries on compact Sasakian and K-contact manifolds. On a Sasakian manifold which is not a space form or 3-Sasakian, every Killing vector field is an infinitesimal automorphism of the Sasakian structure. For a manifold with K-contact structure, we prove that there exists a Killing vector field of constant length which is not an infinitesimal automorphism of the structure if and only if the manifold is obtained from the Konishi bundle of a compact pseudo-Riemannian quaternion-Kähler manifold after changing the sign of the metric on a maximal negative distribution. We also prove that nonregular Sasakian manifolds are not homogeneous and construct examples with cohomogeneity one. Using these results we obtain in the last section the classification of all homogeneous Sasakian manifolds.

Elementary Properties of Cycle-free Partial Orders and their Automorphism Groups

A classification was given by Creed, Truss, and Warren of all the countable k-CS-transitive cycle-free partial orders for k3. Here the elementary theories of these structures and their automorphism groups are examined, and it is shown that in many cases we can distinguish the structures or their groups by means of their first- or second-order properties. The small index property is established for weakly 2-transitive trees, and for several classes of cycle-free partial orders.     

The Mendelsohn Triple Systems of Order 13

A triple cyclically contains the ordered pairs , , , and no others. A Mendelsohn triple system of order v, or , is a set V together with a collection of ordered triples of distinct elements from V, such that and each ordered pair with is cyclically contained in exactly λ ordered triples. By means of a computer search, we classify all Mendelsohn triple systems of order 13 with ; there are 6 855 400 653 equivalence classes of such systems.
