The adsorption of methanol on flat Au (100) surface with different coverages (θ = 1.0, 0.5 and 0.25 monolayer (ML)) is studied using density functional theory. Among the three sites (top, bridge and hollow) and coverages investigated in the present work, no adsorption is stable for θ = 1.0 ML. The most energetically preferred site of adsorption for CH3OH is found to be the hollow site for coverages of 0.25 ML and 0.50 ML. We also find that for all adsorption sites, an increase in CH3OH coverage triggers a decrease in the adsorption energy. The geometric parameters, local density of states and work function changes are analysed in detail. The coadsorption of methoxy and hydrogen has also investigated. In addition, the dissociation of methanol on Au(100) has been studied, and an activation energy was found to be 1.72 eV. This result compare with existing data in the literature for Au(111) surface. Ab initio total energy calculations have been performed for Na, K and Rb adsorption on Ge(0 0 1)(2 × 1) surface. It was found that the adsorption site of AM is AM size dependent. Structural analysis showed that the Ge–Ge dimer bond becomes stronger with increasing AM size. As the coverage increases from 0.5 to 1 ML it turns out that no depolarization effect occurs upon Na adsorption, while this effect becomes more important with increasing AM size. We also found that for all adsorption systems investigated the germanium surface is metallic and semiconducting for the coverage of 0.5 and 1 ML, respectively.

Recent progress on desorption and adsorption dynamics of hydrogen (deuterium) on monohydride and dihydride Si(1 0 0) surfaces is reviewed and discussed. The dynamics experiments reveal that the desorption dynamics of hydrogen is well related to the adsorption dynamics via detailed balance. Dependence of time-of-flight (TOF) distributions of desorbed molecules on H(D) coverage is noticed to be important in understanding the kinetics mechanism of the adsorption/desorption reactions of hydrogen on the Si(1 0 0) surface. The desorption dynamics varies from the situation of strongly translational heating to the other situation of less translational heating with D coverage. This trend seems to be consistent with the 2H/3H/4H interdimer mechanism. However, despites by far the richest 4H configuration at high H coverage, the 2H desorption prevails over the 4H desorption already at 0.8 ML. To reconcile this unexpected desorption kinetics, a diffusion-promoted desorption mechanism is proposed. Height of the adsorption barriers for the 2H and 3H pathways could be reduced by the H-atom diffusion along the Si dimer rows, but that for the 4H pathway could not be the case because of no capability of diffusion on the H saturated surface. The desorption dynamics of hydrogen from the (3 × 1) dihydride surface is also reviewed and compared with the case on the monohydride surface. The sticking coefficients of hydrogen molecules onto the monohydride surfaces are evaluated from the TOF curves and found to be strongly activated by the kinetic energy. Not only the degrees of freedom of the molecules but also the vibrational degrees of freedom of substrate Si atoms determine the barrier height for adsorption. The desorption dynamics of hydrogen from the monohydride and dihydride surfaces appears to be quite similar, but the dynamics of substrate Si atoms is expected to be quite dissimilar between the two desorption pathways.

The interaction of propyne with the Pt(1 1 1) and Pd(1 1 1) surfaces has been studied by means of the generalised gradient approach of density functional theory using periodic slab models. For both surfaces, the most stable adsorption mode of propyne is di-σ/π mode where the hydrocarbon is σ-bonded to two metal atoms with some additional π bonding to a third adjacent surface atom. The adsorption geometry is a highly distorted propyne with the C1 and C2 in a nearly sp2 hybridisation. Two equivalent surface structures have been found on Pt and Pd. These correspond to the adsorption on the fcc or hcp hollow sites. The adsorption energies on Pt(1 1 1) and Pd(1 1 1) are predicted to be ∼−197 and −161 kJ mol−1, respectively. The electronic factors that control the chemisorption have been analysed by means of the projected density of states.

First-principles calculations based on density functional theory-generalized gradient approximation method have been performed on cesium adsorption on Si(001)(2 x 1) surface. The optimized geometries and adsorption energies have been obtained and the preferred binding sites have been determined for the coverage (Theta) of one monolayer and half a monolayer. At Theta = 0.5 ML the most stable adsorption site is shown to be T3 site. At Theta = 1 ML two Cs atoms are adsorbed at HH and T3 sites, respectively. It was found that the saturation coverage of Cs for the Si(001)(2 x 1)-Cs surface is one monolayer instead of half a monolayer. This finding supports the majority of experimental observations but does not support recent coaxial impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy investigations [Surf. Sci. 531, L340 (2003)] and He(+) Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy studies [Phys. Rev. B 62, 4545 (2000)]. Mulliken charge and overlap population analysis showed that the Cs-Si bond is indeed ionic rather than polarized covalent as generally assumed for alkali metal (AM) on Si(001)(2 x 1) surface. Geometrical structure analysis seems to have limitations in determining the nature of AM-substrate bond. We also found that the silicon surface is metallic and semiconducting for the coverages of 0.5 and 1 ML, respectively.

Stability of underpotentially deposited (upd) Ag layers on Au(1 1 1) surface was investigated by surface X-ray scattering (SXS). While the complete pseudomorphic Ag bilayer on Au(1 1 1) surface obtained by upd at 10 mV (vs. Ag/Ag+) was maintained its structure even after the circuit was disconnected and the surface was exposed to ambient atmosphere, the pseudomorphic Ag monolayer obtained by upd at 50 mV was converted to a partial bilayer with the coverage of 0.66 and 0.46 ML for the 1st and 2nd layer, respectively. These results show that Ag bilayer is structurally more stable than Ag monolayer on Au(1 1 1) and Ag atoms of the upd monolayer move around on the Au(1 1 1) surface without potential control.

The adsorption of C atoms on the α-Fe2O3(001) surface was studied based on density function theory(DFT) ,in which the exchange-correlation potential was chosen as the PBE(Perdew,Burke and Ernzerhof) generalized gradient approximation(GGA) with a plane wave basis set. Upon the optimization on different adsorption sites with coverage of 1/20 and 1/5 ML,it was found that the adsorption of C atoms on the α-Fe2O3(001) surface was chemical adsorption. The coverage can affect the adsorption behavior greatly. Under low coverage, the most stable adsorption geometry lied on the bridged site with the adsorption energy of about 3.22 eV;however, under high coverage,it located at the top site with the energy change of 8.79 eV. Strong chemical reaction has occurred between the C and O atoms at this site. The density of states and population analysis showed that the s,p orbitals of C and p orbital of O give the most contribution to the adsorption bonding. During the adsorption process,O atom shares the electrons with C,and C can only affect the outermost and subsurface layers of α-Fe2O3;the third layer can not be affected obviously.

In the present article, we report adsorption energies, structures, and vibrational frequencies of CO on Fe(100) for several adsorption states and at three surface coverages. We have performed a full analysis of the vibrational frequencies of CO, thus determining what structures are stable adsorption states and characterizing the transition-state structure for CO dissociation. We have calculated the activation energy of dissociation of CO at 0.25 ML (ML = monolayers) as well as at 0.5 ML; we have studied the dissociation at 0.5 ML to quantify the destabilization effect on the CO(alpha3) molecules when a neighboring CO molecule dissociates. In addition, it is shown that the number and nature of likely adsorption states is coverage dependent. Evidence is presented that shows that the CO molecule adsorbs on Fe(100) at fourfold hollow sites with the molecular axis tilted away from the surface normal by 51.0 degrees. The asorprton energy of the CO molecule is -2.54 eV and the C-O stretching frequency is 1156 cm(-1). This adsorption state corresponds to the alpha3 molecular desorption state reported in temperature programmed desorption (TPD) experiments. However, the activation energy of dissociation of CO(alpha3) molecules at 0.25 ML is only 1.11 eV (approximately 25.60 kcal mol(-1)) and the gain in energy is -1.17 eV; thus, the dissociation of CO is largely favored at low coverages. The activation energy of dissociation of CO at 0.5 ML is 1.18 eV (approximately 27.21 kcal mol(-1)), very similar to that calculated at 0.25 ML. However, the dissociation reaction at 0.5 ML is slightly endothermic, with a total change in energy of 0.10 eV Consequently, molecular adsorption is stabilized with respect to CO dissociation when the CO coverage is increased from 0.25 to 0.5 ML.

Spin-polarized density functional theory calculations have been performed to characterize the hydrogen adsorption and diffusion on the Fe(111) surface at 2/3-, 1-, and 2-monolayer (ML) coverages. It is found that the most favored adsorption site for atomic hydrogen (H) is the top-shallow bridge site (tsb), followed by the quasi 4-fold site (qff) with the energy difference of about 0.1 eV, while the top site (t) is not competitive. Furthermore, the adsorbed atomic hydrogen (H) has a high mobility, as indicated by the small diffusion barriers. The local density of state (LDOS) analysis reveals that the Fe-H (tsb or qff) bond involves mainly the Fe 4s and 4p and H 1s orbitals with less contribution of the Fe 3d orbital, while the Fe 4s, 4p, and 3d orbitals all participate in the Fe-H (top) bond. In addition, the coverage effects on the adsorption configurations and adsorption energies are addressed.

The adsorption and dissociation of carbon monoxide on Mo (110) surface is studied with density functional theory. The results at different sites (atop, short bridge, long bridge, and hollow) are presented. The hollow site is found to be the most stable adsorption site for CO. The CO molecule is found to adsorb in end-on configurations (alpha states) at high coverage and inclined configurations (beta states) at low coverage. The dissociation activation energy from beta states is found to be approximately 1 eV lower than from alpha state. The adsorption of dissociation products, C and O, on Mo(110) has also been studied. The most stable adsorption site for C and O is long bridge and hollow site, respectively. The adsorption of C and O at low coverage is, in general, stronger than at high coverage, which is partly responsible for the high reactivity of CO dissociation at low coverage, since the binding energy of CO is not very sensitive to the coverage.

Rhodium adlayers (submonolayer range) have been prepared on Pt(1 0 0) electrodes by electrodeposition from acidic solutions containing an excess of chloride. These Rh/Pt(1 0 0) electrodes give a well-defined voltammetric signal in the hydrogen adsorption region, which gives evidence of a high level of order in the Rh adlayer and allow a reliable estimation of the coverage. The voltammetric behavior of the Rh/Pt(1 0 0) electrodes points to an epitaxial growth with formation of rhodium islands. The well-ordered bimetallic surfaces freshly prepared were tested as electrocatalysts for nitrous oxide reduction and the responses were compared with those of the bulk Pt(1 0 0) and Rh(1 0 0) electrodes. The voltammogram for the bimetallic surface showed well separated N2O reduction signals for Rh and Pt surface zones. An exceptionally high electrocatalytic activity for the Rh adlayer was found for low coverages. This behavior is explained on the basis of a high activity of the rhodium adatoms in the periphery of the islands.

Periodic density functional theory(DFT) calculations are presented to describe the adsorption and decomposition of CH3OH on Ru(0001) surfaces with different coverages, including p(3×2), p(2×2), and p(2×1) unit cells, corresponding to monolayer(ML) coverages of 1/6, 1/4, and 1/2, respectively. The geometries and energies of all species involved in methanol dissociation were analyzed, and the initial decomposition reactions of methanol and the subsequent dehydrogenations reactions of CH3O and CH2OH were all computed at 1/2, 1/4, and 1/6 ML coverage on the Ru(0001) surface. The results show that coverage exerts some effects on the stable adsorption of CH3O, CH2OH, and CH3, that is, the lower the coverage, the stronger the adsorption. Coverage also exerts effects on the initial decomposition of methanol. C-H bond breakage is favored at 1/2 ML, whereas C-H and O-H bond cleavages are preferred at 1/4 and 1/6 ML on the Ru(0001) surface, respectively. At 1/4 ML coverage on the Ru(0001) surface, the overall reaction mechanism can be written as 9CH3OH→3CH3O+6CH2OH+9H→6CH2O+3CHOH+18H→7CHO+COH+CH+OH+26H→8CO+C+O+36H.

The monolayer (ML) and submonolayer Pt on both terminations of PbTiO3(110) polar surface have been studied by using density functional theory (DFT) with projector‐augmented wave(PAW) potential and a supercell approach. The most favored ML Pt arrangements on PbTiO and O2 terminations are the hollow site and the short‐bridge site, respectively. By examining the geometries of different ML arrangements, we know that the dominant impetus for stability of the favored adsorption site for PbTiO termination is the Pt–Ti interaction (mainly from covalent bonding), while that for O2 termination is the Pt–O interaction (mainly from ionic bonding). In addition, the appearance of the gap electronic states in the outermost layers of each termination indicates that a channel for charge transfer between adsorbed layer and substrate is formed. Moreover, the interface hybridization between Pt 5d and O 2p orbitals is also observed, especially for ML Pt on O2 termination. The stability sequences for various arrangements of 1/2 ML Pt adsorption conform well with those of ML Pt adsorption, and the most stable arrangement is energetically more favorable than the corresponding ML coverage in the view of adsorption energy maximization. The behavior, i.e. the increase in adsorption energy with decrease in coverage, indicates that Pt? Pt interactions weaken those between Pt and the substrate. To better understand the nature of alkyl intermediates often invoked in reactions involving hydrocarbon reactants and products, the adsorption of linear and branched C(1)-C(4) alkyls on Cu(111) at 1/4 ML and 1/9 ML coverages was studied using density functional theory. The adsorption energy and site preference are found to be coverage-dependent, and both direct alkyl-alkyl interactions and changes in the Cu electronic structure play a role in these trends. It was found that methyl strongly prefers the hollow sites, the branched alkyls strongly prefer the top site, and the linear C(2)-C(4) alkyls have weak site preferences that change with coverage. To explain these differences, rationalize alkyl adsorption trends, and predict the binding energy of other alkyls, a simple model was developed in which the binding energy is fit as a linear function of the number of C-Cu and C-H-Cu interactions as well as the C-H bond energy in the corresponding alkane. Site preference can be understood as a compromise between C-Cu interactions and C-H-Cu interactions. Density of states analysis was used to gain a molecular-orbital understanding of the bonding of alkyls to Cu(111).

The adsorption possibilities of oxygen atoms at Al (111) surface for different oxygen atom coverages (Θ) from 0.25 to 1 ml have been studied using first principles based on density functional theory with generalized gradient approximation. The results show that the interstitial sites on Al (111) surface are relatively stable, in which binding energies are 0.6 ~ 1 eV/atom lower than those on surface face centered cubic (fcc) sites for the different coverages. The binding energy and work function of the oxygen‐adsorbed surface increase with the oxygen atom coverage. Moreover, the oxygen atom at one tetrahedral site of Al (111) subsurface becomes more and more unstable with the decrease of the coverage, and it moves up to the Al (111) surface hexagonal close packed (hcp) site at Θ = 0.25. All the octahedral absorption sites are also unstable in relatively lower coverages (Θ = 0.5 and 0.25). The bond length and overlap population between Al and O, including the relaxation effects on the oxygen atom coverage are discussed. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Both associative and dissociative H(2)O adsorption on SnO(2)(110), TiO(2)(110), and Ti-enriched Sn(1-x)Ti(x)O(2)(110) surfaces have been investigated at low ((1)/(12) monolayer (ML)) and high coverage (1 ML) by density functional theory calculations using the Gaussian and plane waves formalism. The use of a large supercell allowed the simulation at low symmetry levels. On SnO(2)(110), dissociative adsorption was favored at all coverages and was accompanied by stable associative H(2)O configurations. Increasing the coverage from (1)/(12) to 1 ML stabilized the (associatively or dissociatively) adsorbed H(2)O on SnO(2)(110) because of the formation of intermolecular H bonds. In contrast, on TiO(2)(110), the adsorption of isolated H(2)O groups ((1)/(12) ML) was more stable than at high coverage, and the favored adsorption changed from dissociative to associative with increasing coverage. For dissociative H(2)O adsorption on Ti-enriched Sn(1-x)Ti(x)O(2)(110) surfaces with Ti atoms preferably located on 6-fold-coordinated surface sites, the analysis of the Wannier centers showed a polarization of electrons surrounding bridging O atoms that were bound simultaneously to 6-fold-coordinated Sn and Ti surface atoms. This polarization suggested the formation of an additional bond between the 6-fold-coordinated Ti(6c) and bridging O atoms that had to be broken upon H(2)O adsorption. As a result, the H(2)O adsorption energy initially decreased, with increasing surface Ti content reaching a minimum at 25% Ti for (1)/(12) ML. This behavior was even more accentuated at high H(2)O coverage (1 ML) with the adsorption energy decreasing rapidly from 145.2 to 101.6 kJ/mol with the surface Ti content increasing from 0 to 33%. A global minimum of binding energies at both low and high coverage was found between 25 and 33% surface Ti content, which may explain the minimal cross-sensitivity to humidity previously reported for Sn(1-x)Ti(x)O(2) gas sensors. Above 12.5% surface Ti content, the binding energy decreased with increasing coverage, suggesting that the partial desorption of H(2)O is facilitated at a high fractional coverage.
