Three MP2-type electron correlation treatments and standard density functional theory (DFT) approaches are used to predict the heats of formation for a wide variety of different molecules. The SCF and MP2 calculations are performed efficiently using the resolution-of-the-identity (RI) approximation such that large basis set (i.e., polarized valence quadruple-zeta quality) treatments become routinely possible for systems with 50-100 atoms. An atom equivalent scheme that corrects the calculated atomic energies is applied to extract the "real" accuracy of the methods for chemically relevant problems. It is found that the spin-component-scaled MP2 method (SCS-MP2, J. Chem. Phys, 2003, 118, 9095) performs best and provides chemical accuracy (MAD of 1.18 kcal/mol) for a G2/97 test set of molecules. The computationally more economical SOS-MP2 variant, which retains only the opposite-spin part of the correlation energy, is slightly less accurate (MAD of 1.36 kcal/mol) than SCS-MP2. Both spin-component-scaled MP2 treatments perform significantly better than standard MP2 (MAD of 1.77 kcal/mol) and DFT-B3LYP (MAD of 2.12 kcal/mol). These conclusions are supported by results obtained for a second test set of complex systems containing 70 molecules, including charged, strained, polyhalogenated, hypervalent, and large unsaturated species (e.g. C60). For this set, DFT-B3LYP performs badly (MAD of 8.6 kcal/mol) with many errors >10-20 kcal/mol while the spin-component-scaled MP2 methods are still very accurate (MAD of 2.8 and 3.7 kcal/mol, respectively). DFT-B3LYP shows an obvious tendency to underestimate molecular stability as the system size increases. Out of six density functionals tested, the hybrid functional PBE0 performs best. All in all, the SCS-MP2 method, together with large AO basis sets, clearly outperforms current DFT approaches and seems to be the most accurate quantum chemical model that routinely can predict the thermodynamic properties of large main group compounds.  相似文献

The donor/acceptor (D/A) substituted pi-conjugated organic molecules possess extremely fast nonlinear optical (NLO) response time that is purely electronic in origin. This makes them promising candidates for optoelectronic applications. In the present study, we utilized four hybrid density functionals (B3LYP, B97-2, PBE0, BMK), Hartree-Fock, and second order Moller-Plesset correlation energy correction, truncated at second-order (MP2) methods with different basis sets to estimate molecular first hyperpolarizability (beta) of D/A-substituted benzenes and stilbenes (D=OMe, OH, NMe(2), NH(2); A=NO(2), CN). The results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations are compared to those of MP2 method and to the experimental data. We addressed the following questions: (1) the accurate techniques to compare calculated results to each other and to experiment, (2) the choice of the basis set, (3) the effect of molecular planarity, and (4) the choice of the method. Comparison of the absolute values of hyperpolarizabilities obtained computationally and experimentally is complicated by the ambiguities in conventions and reference values used by different experimental groups. A much more tangible way is to compare the ratios of beta's for two (or more) given molecules of interest that were calculated at the same level of theory and measured at the same laboratory using the same conventions and reference values. Coincidentally, it is the relative hyperpolarizabilities rather than absolute ones that are of importance in the rational molecular design of effective NLO materials. This design includes prediction of the most promising candidates from particular homologous series, which are to be synthesized and used for further investigation. In order to accomplish this goal, semiquantitative level of accuracy is usually sufficient. Augmentation of the basis set with polarization and diffuse functions changes beta by 20%; however, further extension of the basis set does not have significant effect. Thus, we recommend 6-31+G(*) basis set. We also show that the use of planar geometry constraints for the molecules, which can somewhat deviate from planarity in the gas phase, leads to sufficient accuracy (with an error less than 10%) of predicted values. For all the molecules studied, MP2 values are in better agreement with experiment, while DFT hybrid methods overestimate beta values. BMK functional gives the best agreement with experiment, with systematic overestimation close to the factor of 1.4. We propose to use the scaled BMK results for prediction of molecular hyperpolarizability at semiquantitative level of accuracy.  相似文献

Spin-component scaled double hybrids including dispersion correction were optimized for many exchange and correlation functionals. Even DSD-LDA performs surprisingly well. DSD-PBEP86 emerged as a very accurate and robust method, approaching the accuracy of composite ab initio methods at a fraction of their computational cost.  相似文献

Owing to the significance in kinetic modeling of the oxidation and combustion mechanisms of hydrocarbons, a fast and relatively accurate method was developed for the prediction of Delta(f)H(298)(o) of alkyl peroxides. By this method, a raw Delta(f)H(298)(o) value was calculated from the optimized geometry and vibration frequencies at B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level and then an accurate Delta(f)H(298)(o) value was obtained by a least-square procedure. The least-square procedure is a six-parameter linear equation and is validated by a leave-one out technique, giving a cross-validation squared correlation coefficient q(2) of 0.97 and a squared correlation coefficient of 0.98 for the final model. Calculated results demonstrated that the least-square calibration leads to a remarkable reduction of error and to the accurate Delta(f)H(298)(o) values within the chemical accuracy of 8 kJ mol(-1) except (CH(3))(2)CHCH(2)CH(2)CH(2)OOH which has an error of 8.69 kJ mol(-1). Comparison of the results by CBS-Q, CBS-QB3, G2, and G3 revealed that B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) in combination with a least-square calibration is reliable in the accurate prediction of the standard enthalpies of formation for alkyl peroxides. Standard entropies at 298 K and heat capacities in the temperature range of 300-1500 K for alkyl peroxides were also calculated using the rigid rotor-harmonic oscillator approximation.  相似文献

A systematic analysis was performed on the suitability of the molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) and MEP-derived properties determined by means of density functional (DFT) methods. Attention was paid to the electrostatic potential (ESP) derived charges, the ESP and exact quantum mechanical dipole moments, the depth of MEP minima, and the MEP distribution in layers around the molecule for a large series of molecules. The electrostatic properties were determined at either local or nonlocal DFT levels using different functionals. The results were compared with the values estimated from quantum mechanical calculations performed at Hartree–Fock, Møller–Plesset up to fourth order, and CIPSI levels. The suitability of the MEP-derived properties estimated from DFT methods is discussed for application in different areas of chemical interest. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Two-dimensional potential energy surfaces for internal rotation of the acetyl substituent and inversion of the five-membered ring in the gas phase and in acetonitrile were constructed by the B3LYP/6-31G(d) method for the diketo form of the 2-acetylcyclopentanone (2-ACPN) molecule. The diketo form of 2-ACPN exists in the gas phase and in low-polarity cyclohexane as a mixture of four rotamers K1, K2, K3, and K4. The fifth isomeric form K3a exists in polar acetonitrile. The estimation of the tautomeric composition of 2-ACPN taking into account the influence of the cyclohexane medium in the framework of the polarizable continuum model (PCM) using the MP 2/cc-pVTZ method agrees better with experimental data than the estimate obtained by the B3LYP/cc-pVTZ method. The constants of the enol-enol and keto-enol tautomeric equilibria of the 2-ACPN tautomers in solutions of aprotic solvents were estimated.  相似文献

An efficient self-consistent approach combining the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism with density functional theory is developed to calculate electron transport properties of molecular devices with quasi-one-dimensional (1D) electrodes. Two problems associated with the low dimensionality of the 1D electrodes, i.e., the nonequilibrium state and the uncertain boundary conditions for the electrostatic potential, are circumvented by introducing the reflectionless boundary conditions at the electrode-contact interfaces and the zero electric field boundary conditions at the electrode-molecule interfaces. Three prototypical systems, respectively, an ideal ballistic conductor, a high resistance tunnel junction, and a molecular device, are investigated to illustrate the accuracy and efficiency of our approach.  相似文献

It is commonly argued that the self-interaction error (SIE) inherent in semilocal density functionals is related to the degree of the electronic localization. Yet at the same time there exists a latent ambiguity in the definitions of the terms "localization" and "self-interaction," which ultimately prevents a clear and readily accessible quantification of this relationship. This problem is particularly pressing for organic semiconductor molecules, in which delocalized molecular orbitals typically alternate with localized ones, thus leading to major distortions in the eigenvalue spectra. This paper discusses the relation between localization and SIEs in organic semiconductors in detail. Its findings provide further insights into the SIE in the orbital energies and yield a new perspective on the failure of self-interaction corrections that identify delocalized orbital densities with electrons.  相似文献

The precision of binding energies and distances computed with dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D) is investigated by propagation of uncertainties, yielding relative uncertainties of several percent. Sensitivity analysis is used to calculate the geometry-dependent relative importance of each input parameter for the dispersion correction. While DFT-Ds are exact at asymptotically large distances, their damping functions are shown to play a significant role in binding geometries. This is demonstrated in detail for the interlayer binding of graphite. The techniques presented allow practitioners to quickly compute error bars and to get an a posteriori estimate about the transferability of their results. They can also aid the development of future dispersion corrections.  相似文献

Using a standard exchange-correlation functional, namely, PBE0, the basis set dependence of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations has been explored using 33 different bases and five organic molecules as test cases. The results obtained show that this functional can provide accurate (i.e., at convergence) results for both valence and low-lying Rydberg excitations if at least one diffuse function for the heavy atoms is included in the basis set. Furthermore, these results are in fairly good agreement with the experimental data and with those delivered by other functionals specifically designed to yield correct asymptotic/long-range behavior. More generally, the PBE0 calculations show that a greater accuracy can be obtained for both Rydberg and valence excitations if they occur at energies below the epsilonHOMO + 1 eV threshold. This latter value is proposed as a thumb rule to verify the accuracy of TD-DFT/PBE0 applications.  相似文献

Electronic properties of liquid water were analysed by a sequential molecular dynamics (MD)/density functional theory approach. MD simulations are based on a polarisable model for water. Emphasis was placed on the prediction of the water dipole moment, liquid state polarisability, ionisation potential (IP), and vertical electron affinity. The dipole moment of the water molecule in liquid water is not dependent on the number of molecules included in the quantum mechanical calculations. The polarisability of the water molecule in liquid water is 4% lower than its gas phase value. The IP of liquid water (9.7 ± 0.06 eV) is in good agreement with recent experimental data.  相似文献

Attaching electron-withdrawing substituent to organic conjugated molecules is considered as an effective method to produce n-type and ambipolar transport materials. In this work, we use density functional theory calculations to investigate the electron and hole transport properties of pentacene (PENT) derivatives after substituent and simulate the angular resolution anisotropic mobility for both electron and hole transport. Our results show that adding electron-withdrawing substituents can lower the energy level of lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and increase electron affinity, which are beneficial to the electron injection and ambient stability of the material. Also the LUMO electronic couplings for electron transport in these pentacene derivatives can achieve up to a hundred meV which promises good electron transport mobility, although adding electron-withdrawing groups will introduce the increase of electron transfer reorganization energy. The final results of our angular resolution anisotropic mobility simulations show that the electron mobility of these pentacene derivatives can get to several cm(2) V(-1) s(-1), but it is important to control the orientation of the organic material relative to the device channel to obtain the highest electron mobility. Our investigation provide detailed information to assist in the design of n-type and ambipolar organic electronic materials with high mobility performance.  相似文献

The generalized hybrid orbital (GHO) method has previously been formulated for combining molecular mechanics with various levels of quantum mechanics, in particular semiempirical neglect of diatomic differential overlap theory, ab initio Hartree-Fock theory, and self-consistent charge density functional tight-binding theory. To include electron-correlation effects accurately and efficiently in GHO calculations, we extend the GHO method to density functional theory in the generalized-gradient approximation and hybrid density functional theory (denoted by GHO-DFT and GHO-HDFT, respectively) using Gaussian-type orbitals as basis functions. In the proposed GHO-(H)DFT formalism, charge densities in auxiliary hybrid orbitals are included to calculate the total electron density. The orthonormality constraints involving the auxiliary Kohn-Sham orbitals are satisfied by carrying out the hybridization in terms of a set of L?wdin symmetrically orthogonalized atomic basis functions. Analytical gradients are formulated for GHO-(H)DFT by incorporating additional forces associated with GHO basis transformations. Scaling parameters are introduced for some of the one-electron integrals and are optimized to obtain the correct charges and geometry near the QM/MM boundary region. The GHO-(H)DFT method based on the generalized gradient approach (GGA) (BLYP and mPWPW91) and HDFT methods (B3 LYP, mPW1PW91, and MPW1 K) is tested-for geometries and atomic charges-against a set of small molecules. The following quantities are tested: 1) the C--C stretch potential in ethane, 2) the torsional barrier for internal rotation around the central C--C bond in n-butane, 3) proton affinities for a set of alcohols, amines, thiols, and acids, 4) the conformational energies of alanine dipeptide, and 5) the barrier height of the hydrogen-atom transfer between n-C4H10 and n-C4H9, where the reaction center is described at the MPW1 K/6-31G(d) level of theory.  相似文献

Fragment density functional theory (DFT) calculation of NMR chemical shifts for several proteins (Trp-cage, Pin1 WW domain, the third IgG-binding domain of Protein G (GB3) and human ubiquitin) has been carried out. The present study is based on a recently developed automatic fragmentation quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (AF-QM/MM) approach but the solvent effects are included by using the PB (Poisson-Boltzmann) model. Our calculated chemical shifts of (1)H and (13)C for these four proteins are in excellent agreement with experimentally measured values and represent clear improvement over that from the gas phase calculation. However, although the inclusion of the solvent effect also improves the computed chemical shifts of (15)N, the results do not agree with experimental values as well as (1)H and (13)C. Our study also demonstrates that AF-QM/MM calculated results accurately reproduce the separation of α-helical and β-sheet chemical shifts for (13)C(α) atoms in proteins, and using the (1)H chemical shift to discriminate the native structure of proteins from decoys is quite remarkable.  相似文献

Here we test the performance of the newly developed MP2.5 and MP2.X methods in terms of their abilities to generate accurate binding energies for noncovalently bound complexes at points away from their minimum energy structures and in terms of the accuracy of their potential energy minima. The MP2.X method is a scaled version of MP2.5 that allows for the use of smaller basis sets for the most computationally demanding (MP3) term, significantly reducing its computational cost. MP2.5 and MP2.X binding energy errors are compared to those of the reference CCSD(T)/CBS method on the dissociation curves associated with the S66 dataset of noncovalent complexes (S66x8). It is found that both the MP2.5 and MP2.X methods produce binding energy errors, as well as potential energy minima, that are significantly more accurate than those of MP2 methods. Thus, these methods are appropriate choices when very high quality geometries of noncovalent complexes are required.  相似文献

The structures and energies for the dimerization of water and ammonia molecules were computed with density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio methods. For all studies the same 6-311+G(2d,2p) basis set was used. Two linear hydrogen-bonded and cyclic ammonia dimer structures were computed and their relative stability is discussed. From the systematic studies, hybrid DFT methods were selected as reliable for computing the parameters of these types of van der Waals' complex.  相似文献

The evaluation of the first-order scalar relativistic corrections to MP2 energy based on either direct perturbation theory or the mass–velocity and Darwin terms is discussed. In a basis set of Lévy-Leblond spinors the one- and two-electron matrix elements of the relativistic Hamiltonian can be decomposed into a nonrelativistic part and a relativistic perturbation. Thus, a program capable of calculating nonrelativistic energy gradients can be used to calculate the cross-term between relativity and correlation. The method has been applied to selected closed-shell atoms (He, Be, Ne, and Ar) and molecules (CuH, AgH, and AuH). The calculated equilibrium distances and harmonic frequencies were compared with results from first-order relativistic density functional calculations. It was found that the cross-term is not the origin of the nonadditivity of relativistic and correlation effects. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Comput Chem 19: 1596–1603, 1998  相似文献
