Abstract— –Pulse radiolysis has been used to excite the triplet states of β-carotene (τ# 9μ sec) and lycopene (τ= 8μsec) in hexane solution, both in the presence and absence of naphthalene as a triplet sensitiser. The absorption spectra of both triplets have been measured in the range 430–550 nm and have thus been extended into the region of the corresponding singlet absorptions. The overlap of the triplet and singlet spectra is discussed in relation to in vivo studies. Extinction coefficients of 1.3±0.1 × 105 l/mole cm for β-carotene triplet 515 nm and 3.9±0.2 × 105 l/mole cm for lycopene triplet at 525 nm were obtained. Isomerisation of the all- trans polyenes used was detected and preliminary measurements indicate that the yield of isomerisation was greater than the triplet yield. The rate of triplet energy transfer from naphthalene to β-carotene was estimated to be 1.5 × 1010 l/mole sec. The corresponding value for lycopene was 1.4× 1010 l/mole sec. The measured efficient quenching of triplet β-carotene by oxygen may occur by an energy transfer mechanism, leading to the formation of singlet oxygen (1Δg. This would suggest that the triplet energy level of β-carotene lies between 121 and 94 kJ mole-1.  相似文献

Abstract— In 1, 1, 2-trichlorotrifluoroethane solution biliverdin physically quenches singlet oxygen at a rate of 8 × l0sM-1s-1 and reacts chemically at 6 × 10 5M-1s-1 to give a red product. In D, O solution the rate constants are PD dependent and range from 1.5–6 times 1010M-1s-1 for quenching and the chemical rate varies from 3–5 × 108 M-1 s-1 to give colorless products.  相似文献

ON THE MECHANISM OF QUENCHING OF SINGLET OXYGEN IN SOLUTION   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Abstract— Bimolecular rate constants for the quenching of singlet oxygen O*2(1Δg), have been obtained for several transition-metal complexes and for β-carotene. Laser photolysis experiments of aerated solutions, in which triplet anthracene is produced and quenched by oxygen, yielding singlet oxygen which then sensitizes absorption due to triplet carotene, firmly establishes diffusion-controlled energy transfer from singlet oxygen as the quenching mechanism in the case of β-carotene. The efficient quenching of singlet oxygen by two trans-planar Schiff-base Ni(II) complexes, which have low-lying triplet ligand-field states, most probably also occurs as a result of electronic energy transfer, since an analogous Pd(II) complex and ferrocene, which both have lowest-lying triplet states at higher energies than the O*2(1Δg), state, quench much less effectively.  相似文献

Abstract— The triplet-triplet absorption spectra of six polyenes have been characterised using flash photolysis, in the presence of anthracene as sensitizer, and pulse radiolysis, in the absence of a sensitizer. The polyenes include several which contain carbonyl groups whose triplet states, unlike retinal , could not be detected unsensitized by flash photolysis. The triplet lifetimes appear to be a function of the number of conjugated double bonds, and vary between 7 and 14 μ sec. In general, the longer the polyene, the shorter the lifetime. An empirical linear relation was found between the frequencies of the polyene triplet-triplet absorption maxima, and the frequencies of the corresponding ground singlet-singlet maxima. The rate constants for quenching by oxygen of nine polyene triplet states were determined to lie in the range 2–7 × 109 M -1 sec-1. The possible mechanisms for oxygen quenching of triplet states are discussed and analogies between the results for oxygen quenching of polyenes and of polyacenes are drawn. The rate constant for oxygen quenching of all- trans -β-carotene triplet was the same in benzene and hexane.  相似文献

Abstract— The extinction coefficient εT, of triplet benzophenone in benzene has been directly determined by absolute measurements of absorbed energy and triplet absorbance, Δ D 0T, under demonstrably linear conditions where incident excitation energy, E 0, and ground state absorbance, A 0, are both extrapolated to zero. The result, 7220 ± 320 M -1 cm-1 at 530 nm, validates and slightly corrects many measurements relative to benzophenone of triplet extinction coefficients made by the energy transfer technique, and of triplet yields obtained by the comparative method.
As E 0 and A 0 both decrease, Δ D 0T becomes proportional to their product. In this situation, the ratio R = (1/ A 0)(dΔ D 0T/d E 0) = (εT - εGT. Measurements of R , referred to benzophenone, give (εT - εGT for any substance, without necessity for absolute energy calibration.
Both absolute and relative laser flash measurements on zinc tetraphenyl porphyrin (εT - εG at 470 nm = 7.3 × 104 M -1 cm-1) give φT= 0.83 ± 0.04.  相似文献

The photochemical reactivity of β-lapachone ( 1 ), nor -β-lapachone ( 2 ) and 1,2-naphthoquinone ( 3 ) towards amino acids and nucleobases or nucleosides has been examined employing the nanosecond laser flash photolysis technique. Excitation (λ = 355 nm) of degassed solutions of 1 – 3 , in acetonitrile, resulted in the formation of their corresponding triplet excited states. These transients were efficiently quenched by l -tryptophan, l -tryptophan methyl ester, l -tyrosine, l -tyrosine methyl ester and l -cysteine ( k q  ≈ 109 L mol−1 s−1). For l -tryptophan, l -tyrosine and their methyl esters new transients were formed in the quenching process, which were assigned to the corresponding radical pair resulting from an initial electron transfer from the amino acids or their esters to the excited quinone, followed by a fast proton transfer. No measurable quenching rate constants could be observed in the presence of thymine and thymidine. On the other hand, efficient rate constants were obtained when 1 – 3 were quenched by 2'-deoxyguanosine ( k q  ≈ 109 L mol−1 s−1). The quantum efficiency of singlet oxygen (1O2) formation from 1 to 3 was determined employing time-resolved near-IR emission studies upon laser excitation and showed considerably high values in all cases (ΦΔ = 0.6), which are fully in accord with the ππ* character of these triplets in acetonitrile.  相似文献

Abstract— The characteristics of the fluorescence and phosphorescence emission of 2-amino-4 (3H) pteridinone (or pterin) in aqueous solutions are pH dependent. The room temperature fluorescence quantum yield is low and is maximum at pH = 10 (φF∼ 0.057). The 77K phosphorescence emission consists of two overlapping emissions originating from τ* triplet states. In agreement with low temperature results, the 353nm laser flash photolysis makes it possible to detect at pH 9.2, two transient triplet absorptions (τ1∼ 0.3 μs and τ2∼ 2.3 μs). The longer lived triplet is characterized by φTM∼ 0.20 and ∼ (550nm) = 2000 M −1 cm−1. It reacts with the solvent forming the semireduced pterin with a quantum yield φR∼ 0.06. The photosensitizing properties of pterin have been studied by laser flash spectroscopy and steady state irradiations. Photoreactions implying singlet oxygen formation are shown to occur. Laser flash spectroscopy indicates that the pterin triplet is reduced by amino acids and nucleic acid bases. Corresponding bimolecular reaction rate constants have been measured.  相似文献

Abstract— Upon e--pulse irradiation in nonprotic solvents, all- trans retinol (ROH) and retinylmethyl ether (ROMe) form transient species (τ= 0.5–7μs, λmax=575–590 nm) identifiable as radical anions. Similar species are also formed upon laser pulse photoexcitation of these retinyl derivatives in the presence of N,N-dimethylaniline in acetonitrile. In contrast, electron transfer or attachment to all- trans retinyl acetate (ROAc) and palmitate (ROPa) results in 'instantaneous' loss of carboxylate anions from electron adducts giving the retinylmethyl radical (R-, λmax= 395 nm, τk > 100 μ,s); the radical anions in these cases are too short-lived to be detected by nanosecond pulse radiolysis. The lifetimes of radical anions of ROH and ROMe are very sensitive to water and alcohols (e.g. kq = 107 M -1 s-1 with methanol as quencher for ROH- in tetrahydrofuran). Based on these findings, the spectral dissimilarity of the one-electron reduction products from ROH and ROAc in alcohols and aqueous micelles becomes explainable in terms of fast formation of protonated radical anions (RH(OH), τ1/2, > 100 μs, λmax=370–375 nm) in the case of ROH and of retinylmethyl radical via loss of AcO- from radical anion in the case of ROAc. In tetrahydrofuran, the complexation of ROH- with cations such as Na+ and Bu4N+ affects the relative importance of its major decay modes, namely, protonation and dehydroxylation, the latter process being significantly enhanced by the presence of Na+.  相似文献

Abstract— The excited states of bilirubin (BR) in a variety of environments have been studied by 347 nm laser flash photolysis. Quantum yields of formation of triplet BR have been shown to be less than 0.005 in solution in water ( p H 9–11), methanolic ammonia, 10% aqueous mulgofen and in cetyl trimethyl-ammonium bromide. In benzene the quantum yield was 0.01 although this diminished to less than 0.005 on addition of triethylamine. Permanent products are formed with benzene and with 1% methanolic ammonia. With BR in HSA a transient decaying with k = 3.5 × 105 s-1 is formed by a monophotonic process together with a permanent product. Neither species is affected by oxygen or by iodide ion. Both originate from BR molecules in the strongest binding site in the HSA. The yields of both species are unaffected by salt but are temperature dependent. The decay of the transient is strongly temperature dependent corresponding to an activation energy of about 50–60 kj mol-1. If this transient is a triplet it is formed with a quantum yield of 0.13 ± 0.01. The relevance of these results to an understanding of the photo therapeutic process is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract— Triplet-and singlet-related photoprocesses of pyrene-1-aldehyde (PA) in various solvents have been investigated in detail using 337.1 and 355 nm laser flash photolysis in conjunction with time-correlated determination of fluorescence lifetimes (τF) and steady-state photochemical and absorption-emission spectral measurements. In benzene, the lowest triplet of PA (43 < ET < 46 kcal/mol) has a lifetime of about 50 µs (τT) and displays the absorption maximum at 443 nm with a maximum extinction coefficient (εmax) of 21000 M -1cm-1; the corresponding ketyl radical has a sharp absorption maximum at 428 nm (εmax≥ 25000 M -1cm-1). The quantum yields (φT) of lowest triplet occupation are high in nonprotic solvents (0.6–0.8), decrease in protic solvents (alcohols) as the polarity of the latter is increased, and maintain a complementary relationship with the quantum yields (φF) of fluorescence. Quantum yields (φPC) of loss of PA due to photoreactions in some solvents have also been determined under conditions of steady irradiation at 366 nm; φPC is in the range 0.1–0.2 in electron-rich olefinic solvents such as cyclohexene and tetramethylethylene. These results concerning τF, τT, φF. φT and φPC as well as the effects of 1,2,4-trimethoxybenzene and 2,5-dimethyl-2,4-hexadiene as quenchers for fluorescence, triplet yield, and photochemistry are discussed in the light of possible state orders for PA in polar and nonpolar environments.  相似文献

Abstract— –Flash photolysis at 450 nm over the temperature range 0.8–60°C was used to determine Arrhenius parameters for the first and second order disappearance of triplet lumiflavin (1.66 µ .M ) at a flash energy of 2 kj in deaerated phosphate buffer at varying pH:
3Lf → Lf0
3Lf +3Lf → Lf0+ Lf0
Arrhenius parameters were also determined for the pseudo first-order quenching of triplet lumiflavin by 10 µ M ferri- and ferrocyanide ions,
3Lf + Fe3+→ Fe3+→ Lf0+ Fe3+ (energy transfer)
3Lf + Fe2+→ Lf-+ Fe3+ (electron transfer)
and for disappearance of the semireduced lumiflavin in the presence of ferrocyanide at pH 6.8, by the second-order reaction
Lf-+Lf -→ Lf0+ Lf=.  相似文献

Abstract —Human and bovine serum albumin quench enzyme-generated acetone phosphorescence ( K sv= ca . 104 M 1). Concomitantly, these proteins are altered as shown by diminished tryptophan absorption at 280 nm, appearance of products of the formylkynurenine type (max= ca . 320 nm) and disappearance of tryptophan fluorescence. These alterations—which are similar to those induced photochemically—were also observed with serum albumins exposed to enzyme-generated triplet acetaldehyde. On the other hand, triplet acetone generated by the thermolysis of tetramethyldioxetane failed to induce alterations. Presumably energy transfer occurs from the enzyme-generated triplet species to tryptophan group(s) in the serum albumin associated with the acting enzyme. The detailed mechanism is, however, not yet understood.  相似文献

Abstract— The triplet state characteristics (spectrum, lifetime and quantum yield) for four dye sensi tisers [methylene blue (MB), erythrosin (ER), haematoporphyrin (HP) and riboflavin (RF)] were determined in methanol by laser flash photolysis and singlet oxygen yields (0.60 to 0.48) from time-resolved measurements of the 1270 nm near infrared emission. The reaction of singlet oxygen with four long chain unsaturated phenyl esters [oleate (18: 1), linoleate (18: 2), linolenate (18: 3) and arachidonate (20: 4)] was followed quantitatively using the singlet oxygen luminescence technique and also, after continuous420–700 nm irradiation, by HPLC and other analysis of the isomeric product monohydroperoxides. The overall quantum yield of photooxidation (∼10-2) was shown to be consistent with the observed singlet oxygen quenching constants(2–12 times 104 dm3 mol-1 s-1) for the four esters studied and the singlet oxygen lifetime in methanol (τ∼ 9 μs). The isomer product distribution was interpreted in terms of a dual singlet oxygen and radical mechanism, the radical contribution increasing with sensitiser in the order ER = MB < HP ≪ RF, but also showing some dependence on substrate unsaturation. Evidence is presented for singlet oxygen quenching by MB and RF ( kO = 1.6 and 6.0 times 107 dm3 mol-1 s-1) and for the accelerated photobleaching of the dye sensitisers in the presence of the unsaturated esters.  相似文献

Abstract— The conventional flash photolysis of 1-methylindole in aqueous media was studied at Λexcitation≥290 nm. The transients observed 20 μs after excitation consisted mainly of the radical cation (R+). the hydrated electron (e-aq) and the triplet state (T). Electron counting experiments indicate that photoionization is the only source of R+ with e-aq/R+= 1.07±0.09 in neutral media. Quenching of the R+ yield with H+ indicates that the fluorescent state is the precursor to 80% of the photoionization events with the remainder probably arising from a prefluorescent state. The triplet decays with a lifetime of 29 μs in deaerated neutral media. This decay is unchanged by N2O saturation, but T reacts with acrylamide with k ≥2.8 × 109 M -1. In 2 M Br-, R+ and T yields are increased by factors of 2–3. Consideration of fluorescence quenching and T enhancement by Br-permits an estimate of φIsc between 0.33 and 0.49. The increased R+yield at high Br-concentrations cannot be accounted for by induced photoionization or triplet state reactions.  相似文献

Abstract— The long-lived (> 1 μsec) transients formed in the flash excitation of the representative photosensitizers methylene blue, eosin Y and pyrene have been investigated and various criteria have been used to distinguish between triplet state intermediates and chemical intermediates. Previous assignments of the triplet transients of methylene blue appeared less secure in view of the photochemical reactivity of this dye and its lack of phosphorescence. Earlier assignments of monomeric and dimeric triplet transients of methylene blue are substantiated, however, by the observations that the rate constant for quenching by oxygen is approximately 1/9th diffusion controlled and the formation rates are commensurate with singlet decay rates and by the observation of triplet-triplet annihilation. Additional evidence in support of monomer triplet assignments for methylene blue and eosin Y is provided by the effect of heavy atom quenchers Cs+, Hg2+ and T1+ on decay rates. Due to chemical reactivity, quenching by Iappears less suitable as a diagnostic test for triplet state intermediates. The effect of N3, which is known to quench singlet oxygen molecules and to alter the course of photosensitized oxidations, on the triplet decay of methylene blue, eosin Y and pyrene is also investigated.  相似文献

Abstract— The kinetics of the triplet-triplet energy transfer of chlorophyll α (Cha) to β carotene (Car) has been investigated in Triton X100 micelles by 353 nm laser flash photolysis. This transfer consists of an intramicellar process involving pigment species located in the same micelle. A kinetic model using a bimolecular treatment leads to a rate constant of the energy transfer in the micellar phase ( k tm≅ 6 × 108 M -1 s-1) lower than the previously determined values in homogeneous solvents ( k t≅ 4.6 ≅ 109 M -ls-l); this result shows the high microviscosity of the micellar core. In addition, the apparent bimolecular rate constant ( k t≅ 5.0 ≅ 1010 M -l s-1) appears to be an order of magnitude higher than in homogeneous solvents. The lifetime of the carotene triplet state is the same in the hydrophobic core of Triton X100 micelles (τ a = 7.7 μs) as in organic solvents (hexane or carbon disulfide). The transfer yield is controlled by the distribution of chlorophyll and carotene molecules in the micelles.  相似文献

Abstract— Higher excited triplet states originating from the lowest triplet state of isoalloxazines by absorption of light with Λ - 600 nm undergo "inverse" intersystem crossing to the singlet manifold [φ( Tn-Sm ) = 8 × 10-3] followed by rapid internal conversion and "normal" fluorescence S1-S0 with Λm= 540 nm.  相似文献

Abstract— In the reaction center of photosynthetic bacteria, with the primary ubiquinone reduced, the triplet state PR of the primary electron donor (a pair of bacteriochlorophylls named P) is PO ulated with a takes place in a few ns. We measured by flash absorption spectroscopy the influence of temperature on formation and decay kinetics of PR and 3Car in the reaction center of several strains of R. sphaeroides . The rate of triplet energy transfer, measured as the decay of PR after a flash, decreases when the temperature is lowered. Between 60 and 30 K the half-time of energy transfer becomes longer than the 3Car half-time decay (about 6 μs) and below 20 K the transfer is slower than the internal decay of PR (about 100 μs). In several cases it is clear that PR and 3Car decay independently and are not in thermal equilibrium. The singlet energy transfer from carotenoid to P occurs with a high efficiency at all temperatures.
The data can be accounted for on the basis of estimated energy levels of PR and 3Car, in the context of the equilibrium 3P ←3D where 3P is the localized triplet state of P-870 and 3D is another triplet state. A reasonable kinetic scheme leads us to estimate that 3D is 0.0025 ± 0.005 eV above 3P. 3D may thus be the state observed by Shuvalov and Parson (1981). We propose that both triplet and singlet energy transfer between P and the carotenoid occur via a bacteriochlorophyll, to which the carotenoid should be tightly coupled via exchange interaction.  相似文献

Abstract— The influence of chloride ion on the rate of decay of triplet methylene blue in 0.01 M acid in the absence and presence of ferrous ions was investigated by means of laser flash-photolysis monitored by kinetic spectrophotometry. Chloride weakly accelerates decay of 3MBH in aqueous solution in the absence of Fe(II). Quenching of 3MBH2+ by Fe(II) is more strongly catalyzed by Cl- in both water and 50 v/v% aq. CH3CN. The uncatalyzed quenching constant, k 5, is of the order of 1 × 106 M -1 s-1 while in 4.8 M aqueous chloride ( μ – 7.2 M ) k 5= (37.2 ± 1.8) × 106 M -1 s-1. A possible role of chloride is as a bridging species in quenching via electron transfer between 3MBH2+ and Fe(II).  相似文献
