Bernstein operators for extended Chebyshev systems

Let U_n ⊂ Cⁿ[a, b] be an extended Chebyshev space of dimension n + 1. Suppose that f₀ ∈ U_n is strictly positive and f₁ ∈ U_n has the property that f₁/f₀ is strictly increasing. We search for conditions ensuring the existence of points t₀, …, t_n ∈ [a, b] and positive coefficients α₀, …, α_n such that for all f ∈ C[a, b], the operator B_n:C[a, b] → U_n defined by satisfies B_nf₀ = f₀ and B_nf₁ = f₁. Here it is assumed that p_n,k, k = 0, …, n, is a Bernstein basis, defined by the property that each p_n,k has a zero of order k at a and a zero of order n − k at b.

Approximation of Generalized Bernstein Operators

This paper is devoted to study direct and converse approximation theorems of the generalized Bernstein operators Cn( f,sn,x) via so-called unified modulus ω2φλ( f,t), 0 ≤λ≤1. We obtain main results as follows ω2φλ( f,t) =O(tα)|Cn( f,sn,x)- f(x)| =O(n-12 δ1-λn(x))α,where δ2n(x) =max{φ2(x),1/n} and 0 α 2.     

On Global Smoothness Preservation by Bernstein Operators

We investigate the global smoothness preservation by Bernstein operators measured by second-order modulus of smoothness and give a partial answer for a conjecture raised by H. H. Gonska in 1998.     

Saturation theorems for generalized Bernstein polynomials

In the present paper, we give the explicit formula of the principal part of n ∑ k=0 ([k]q -[n]qx)sxk n-k-1 ∏ m=0 (1-qmx) with respect to [n]q for any integer s and q ∈ (0,1]. And, using the expressions, we obtain saturation theorems for Bn(f,qn;x) approximating to f(x) ∈ C[0,1], 0 < qn ≤ 1, qn → 1.     

Asymptotics of Differentiated Bernstein Polynomials

It is shown that the m th-order derivative of the n th-order Bernstein polynomial of a function f satisfying a certain Lipschitz condition, can be written for n\rightarrow +∈fty as a singular integral of Gauss—Weierstrass type, m times differentiated (in a certain sense) under the integral sign. The theorem is applied to yield an overdifferentiation formula, involving p times differentiated Bernstein polynomials of functions that are not C ^p . December 1, 1998. Asymptotic expansion and extrapolation for Bernstein polynomials with applications

Given a real functionf C ^2k [0,1],k 1 and the corresponding Bernstein polynomials {B _n (f)} _n we derive an asymptotic expansion formula forB _n (f). Then, by applying well-known extrapolation algorithms, we obtain new sequences of polynomials which have a faster convergence thanB _n (f). As a subclass of these sequences we recognize the linear combinations of Bernstein polynomials considered by Butzer, Frentiu, and May [2, 6, 9]. In addition we prove approximation theorems which extend previous results of Butzer and May. Finally we consider some applications to numerical differentiation and quadrature and we perform numerical experiments showing the effectiveness of the considered technique.This work was partially supported by a grant from MURST 40.

Generalized Bernstein Polynomials

We introduce polynomials B ⁿ _i (x;ω|q), depending on two parameters q and ω, which generalize classical Bernstein polynomials, discrete Bernstein polynomials defined by Sablonnière, as well as q-Bernstein polynomials introduced by Phillips. Basic properties of the new polynomials are given. Also, formulas relating B ⁿ _i (x;ω|q), big q-Jacobi and q-Hahn (or dual q-Hahn) polynomials are presented. We obtained that for any n N, C = 1 is the smallest constant for which the inequality ||B _n (f) - f|| C ₂(f, 1/n) holds on the class of continuous functions f, as well as on the class of bounded functions f, where B _n is the Bernstein operators of degree n, ₂ is the second order modulus and || || is the sup-norm.

Here concerned and further investigated is a certain operator method for the computation of convolutions of polynomials. We provide a general formulation of the method with a refinement for certain old results, and also give some new applications to convolved sums involving several noted special polynomials. The advantage of the method using operators is illustrated with concrete examples. Finally, also presented is a brief investigation on convolution polynomials having two types of summations.
