We consider a Banach space X endowed with a linear topology τ and a family of seminorms {Rk(⋅)} which satisfy some special conditions. We define an equivalent norm ?⋅? on X such that if C is a convex bounded closed subset of (X,?⋅?) which is τ-relatively sequentially compact, then every nonexpansive mapping T:CC has a fixed point. As a consequence, we prove that, if G is a separable compact group, its Fourier-Stieltjes algebra B(G) can be renormed to satisfy the FPP. In case that G=T, we recover P.K. Lin's renorming in the sequence space ?1. Moreover, we give new norms in ?1 with the FPP, we find new classes of nonreflexive Banach spaces with the FPP and we give a sufficient condition so that a nonreflexive subspace of L1(μ) can be renormed to have the FPP.  相似文献

Let T be a bounded linear operator from a separable Banach space X to a Banach space Y. A necessary and sufficient condition on T for the existence of a subspace Z of X such that Z is isomorphic to C(α) and the restriction of T to Z is an isomorphism is given. The special case where X is the disc algebra is then considered and results similar to those previously obtained by the author for C(K) spaces are obtained for the disc algebra. Finally some additional results of the same type are proved for subspaces of C(K) with small annihilator.  相似文献

We show that if there exists a Lipschitz homeomorphism T between the nets in the Banach spaces C(X) and C(Y) of continuous real valued functions on compact spaces X and Y, then the spaces X and Y are homeomorphic provided . By l(T) and l(T−1) we denote the Lipschitz constants of the maps T and T−1. This improves the classical result of Jarosz and the recent result of Dutrieux and Kalton where the constant obtained is . We also estimate the distance of the map T from the isometry of the spaces C(X) and C(Y).  相似文献

Suppose (B,β) is an operator ideal, and A is a linear space of operators between Banach spaces X and Y. Modifying the classical notion of hyperreflexivity, we say that A is called B-hyperreflexive if there exists a constant C such that, for any TB(X,Y) with α=supβ(qTi)<∞ (the supremum runs over all isometric embeddings i into X, and all quotient maps of Y, satisfying qAi=0), there exists aA, for which β(Ta)?Cα. In this paper, we give examples of B-hyperreflexive spaces, as well as of spaces failing this property. In the last section, we apply SE-hyperreflexivity of operator algebras (SE is a regular symmetrically normed operator ideal) to constructing operator spaces with prescribed families of completely bounded maps.  相似文献

Isometries and almost isometries between spaces of continuous functions   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We characterize the isometries fromC(X) intoC(Y) whereX andY are compact metric spaces. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on an isometry from a subset ofC(X) intoC(Y) to have an extension to the whole space. It is also shown that an almost isometry from the unit ball ofC(X) into the unit ball ofC(Y) is near to an isometry.  相似文献

Let C(X,G) be the group of continuous functions from a topological space X into a topological group G with pointwise multiplication as the composition law, endowed with the uniform convergence topology. To what extent does the group structure of C(X,G) determine the topology of X? More generally, when does the existence of a group homomorphism H between the groups C(X,G) and C(Y,G) implies that there is a continuous map h of Y into X such that H is canonically represented by h? We prove that, for any topological group G and compact spaces X and Y, every non-vanishing C-isomorphism (defined below) H of C(X,G) into C(Y,G) is automatically continuous and can be canonically represented by a continuous map h of Y into X. Some applications to specific groups and examples are given in the paper.  相似文献

We prove a non-archimedean Dugundji extension theorem for the spaces C*(X, C* (X, K) of continuous bounded functions on an ultranormal space X with values in a non-archimedean non-trivially valued complete field K. Assuming that K is discretely valued and Y is a closed subspace of X we show that there exists an isometric linear extender T: C* (Y, K) → K* (X, K) if X is collectionwise normal or Y is Lindelöf or K is separable. We provide also a self contained proof of the known fact that any metrizable compact subspace Y of an ultraregular space X is a retract of X.  相似文献

Let C(X,T) be the group of continuous functions of a compact Hausdorff space X to the unit circle of the complex plane T with the pointwise multiplication as the composition law. We investigate how the structure of C(X,T) determines the topology of X. In particular, which group isomorphisms H between the groups C(X,T) and C(Y,T) imply the existence of a continuous map h of Y into X such that H is canonically represented by h. Among other results, it is proved that C(X,T) determines X module a biseparating group isomorphism and, when X is first countable, the automatic continuity and representation as Banach-Stone maps for biseparating group isomorphisms is also obtained.  相似文献

For a given bi-continuous semigroup (T(t)) t⩾0 on a Banach space X we define its adjoint on an appropriate closed subspace X° of the norm dual X′. Under some abstract conditions this adjoint semigroup is again bi-continuous with respect to the weak topology σ(X°,X). We give the following application: For Ω a Polish space we consider operator semigroups on the space Cb(Ω) of bounded, continuous functions (endowed with the compact-open topology) and on the space M(Ω) of bounded Baire measures (endowed with the weak*-topology). We show that bi-continuous semigroups on M(Ω) are precisely those that are adjoints of bi-continuous semigroups on Cb(Ω). We also prove that the class of bi-continuous semigroups on Cb(ω) with respect to the compact-open topology coincides with the class of equicontinuous semigroups with respect to the strict topology. In general, if is not a Polish space this is not the case.  相似文献

Let A be a lattice-ordered algebra endowed with a topology compatible with the structure of algebra. We provide internal conditions for A to be isomorphic as lattice-ordered algebras and homeomorphic to Ck(X), the lattice-ordered algebra C(X) of real continuous functions on a completely regular and Hausdorff topological space X, endowed with the topology of uniform convergence on compact sets. As a previous step, we determine this topology among the locally m-convex topologies on C(X) with the property that each order closed interval is bounded.  相似文献

It is proved that whenever X and Y are completely regular -spaces of pointwise countable type and the spaces C p(X) and C p(Y) of real-valued continuous functions on X and Y, respectively, endowed with the topology of pointwise convergence, are linearly homeomorphic, the X is locally compact iff Y is locally compact. This extends the McCoy and Ntantu result.  相似文献

A Banach spaceX is aP λ-space if wheneverX is isometrically embedded in another Banach spaceY there is a projection ofY ontoX with norm at most λ.C(T) denotes the Banach space of continuous real-valued functions on the compact Hausdorff spaceT. T satisfies the countable chain condition (CCC) if every family of disjoint non-empty open sets inT is countable.T is extremally disconnected if the closure of every open set inT is open. The main result is that ifT satisfies the CCC andC(T) is aP λ-space, thenT is the union of an open dense extremally disconnected subset and a complementary closed setT Asuch thatC(TA) is aP λ?1-space.  相似文献

Let X and Y denote compact Hausdorff spaces, C(X) and C(Y) the sup-norm Banach spaces of continuous real-valued functions on X and Y respectively, and φ: C(X) → C(Y) an onto isomorphism whose bound is less than three. With the aid of second duals, we construct a natural function from X into the set of finite subsets of Y. This provides a new approach to results of Amir and Cambern. We then obtain necessary conditions on X and Y for the existence of a bound-two isomorphism; for instance, the existence of open sets U and V of X and Y respectively such that U and V are homeomorphic and XßU and YßV are homeomorphic.  相似文献

In this paper, which is a continuation of Timofte (J. Approx. Theory 119 (2002) 291–299, we give special uniform approximations of functions from CXY(T×S) and C(T×S,XY) by elements of the tensor products CX(T)CY(S), respectively C0(T,X)C0(S,Y), for topological spaces T,S and Γ-locally convex spaces X,Y (all four being Hausdorff).  相似文献

Let Cα(X,Y) be the set of all continuous functions from X to Y endowed with the set-open topology where α is a hereditarily closed, compact network on X which is closed under finite unions. We proved that the density of the space Cα(X,Y) is at most iw(X)⋅d(Y) where iw(X) denotes the i-weight of the Tychonoff space X, and d(Y) denotes the density of the space Y when Y is an equiconnected space with equiconnecting function Ψ, and Y has a base consists of Ψ-convex subsets of Y. We also prove that the equiconnectedness of the space Y cannot be replaced with pathwise connectedness of Y. In fact, it is shown that for each infinite cardinal κ, there is a pathwise connected space Y such that π-weight of Y is κ, but Souslin number of the space Ck([0,1],Y) is κ2.  相似文献

Let π:XY be a surjective continuous map between Tychonoff spaces. The map π induces, by composition, an injective morphism C(Y)→C(X) between the corresponding rings of real-valued continuous functions, and this morphism allows us to consider C(Y) as a subring of C(X). This paper deals with finiteness properties of the ring extension C(Y)⊆C(X) in relation to topological properties of the map π:XY. The main result says that, for X a compact subset of Rn, the extension C(Y)⊆C(X) is integral if and only if X decomposes into a finite union of closed subsets such that π is injective on each one of them.  相似文献

The present paper considers the existence of continuous roots of algebraic equations with coefficients being continuous functions defined on compact Hausdorff spaces. For a compact Hausdorff space X, C(X) denotes the Banach algebra of all continuous complex-valued functions on X with the sup norm ∥⋅. The algebra C(X) is said to be algebraically closed if each monic algebraic equation with C(X) coefficients has a root in C(X). First we study a topological characterization of a first-countable compact (connected) Hausdorff space X such that C(X) is algebraically closed. The result has been obtained by Countryman Jr, Hatori-Miura and Miura-Niijima and we provide a simple proof for metrizable spaces. Also we consider continuous approximate roots of the equation znf=0 with respect to z, where fC(X), and provide a topological characterization of compact Hausdorff space X with dimX?1 such that the above equation has an approximate root in C(X) for each fC(X), in terms of the first ?ech cohomology of X.  相似文献

We investigate relationships between inessential operators and improjective operators acting between Banach spaces X and Y, emphasizing the case in which one of the spaces is a C(K) space. We show that they coincide in many cases, but they are different in the case X = YC(K 0), where K 0 is a compact space constructed by Koszmider.  相似文献
