Local transport of the flow momentum and scalar admixture in the near-field of turbulent swirling jets (Re = 5,000) has been investigated by using a combination of the particle image velocimetry and planar laser-induced fluorescence methods. Advection and turbulent and molecular diffusions are evaluated based on the measured distributions of the mean velocity and concentration and the Reynolds stresses and fluxes. As has been quantified from the data, the flow swirl intensifies the entrainment of the surrounding fluid and promotes mass and momentum exchange in the outer mixing layer. A superimposed swirl results in the appearance of a wake/recirculation region at the jet axis and, consequently, the formation of an inner shear layer. In contrast to the scalar admixture, the momentum exchange in the inner shear layer is found to be strongly intensified by the swirl. For the jet with the highest considered swirl rate, a substantial portion of the surrounding fluid is found to enter the unsteady central recirculation zone, where it mixes with the jet that is issued from the nozzle. The contribution of the coherent velocity fluctuations, which are induced by large-scale vortex structures, to the turbulent transport has been evaluated based on triple decomposition, which was based on proper orthogonal decomposition analysis of the velocity data sets. For the considered domain of the jet with the highest swirl rate and vortex breakdown, the contributions of detected helical vortex structures, inducing pressing vortex core, to the radial fluxes of the flow momentum and the scalar admixture are found to locally exceed 65% and 80%, respectively.  相似文献

In this paper, numerical studies are reported on the effect of flow-flame interaction at large and medium scales and its impact on flame stabilization in a lean premixed low swirl stabilized methane/air flame. The numerical simulations are based on a large eddy simulation (LES) approach with a three-scalar flamelet model with equations for mixture fraction and fuel mass fraction and the level-set G-equation to account respectively for stratification of the mixture, fuel leakage at the trailing edge of the flame, and tracking of the flame front. Distinct frequencies, associated with the flame stabilization process, are identified from point data of LES in the outer and inner shear layers of the burner induced flow field. To understand the effect of the spatial structures related to the observed flow frequencies, a dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) is performed. Based on the analysis of LES data, frequency specific coherent flow structures are extracted along with associated flame structures through an extended version of DMD. The inner shear layer generated vortices are associated with recurring frequency specific coherent structures of both flow and flame and contribute to the flame stabilization in the outer regions of the flow.  相似文献

Evolution of coherent structures and their interaction dynamics are educed in the near field of an acoustically excited basic annular jet using conditional sampling technique based on a multiple triggering criterion to detect the two dominating modes of structure pattern. Acoustic excitation is applied with an aim to better organize the phase alignment of initial rolling and pairing process in the outer shear layer. Negligible modification of the time-averaged flow field results from the excitation. The educed coherent vorticities show that the two modes of evolution are due to the corresponding two modes of shedding pattern of the wake structures from the centerbody, namely the mode one wake and the mode zero wake. In both modes, the shear-layer mode jet vortex rings in the outer layer are perturbed by the shedding of wake structures in the inner region and interaction involving primary merging of three successive jet vortex rings or their partial circumferential sections is found. This results in the formation of wake-induced structures of the corresponding mode pattern, which possesses concentration of coherent vorticity and fluid circulation over a large spatial extent at 1 < x/D < 2. Secondary interactions, such as vortex tearing, are also observed.  相似文献

High-resolution, reactive Mie scattering laser-sheet visualizations, two-color digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) and thermal anemometry measurements in flows generated by equivalent coaxial circular and square jets are presented. Visualization results were obtained for three square, coaxial configurations, and a reference circular coaxial nozzle, at two Reynolds numbers of the outer jet (19,000 and 29,000) and for inner-to-outer jet velocity ratios of 0.15, 0.22, and 0.3. These indicated that the internal unmixed region diminished with decreasing velocity ratio. Strong evidence of unsteady recirculation and back-flow was observed at the end of the core of the inner jet, for the low velocity ratios. Comparisons between circular and square jet configurations indicated considerable mixing enhancement when square nozzles were used. Low-coherence, organized large-scale structure was evident from the visualizations and DPIV measurements near the origin of the inner mixing-region shear layers, and more so in the core region of the near field. These observations were confirmed by velocity spectra, which displayed peaks corresponding to a free shear-layer instability mode in the inner mixing-region shear layers, and a wake-type mode in the core region where the mean flow has a wake-like character. Although some large-scale structure was observed in the outer mixing layer during the visualizations, this was found to be incoherent on the basis of the DPIV measurements and the velocity spectra. It is noted that no axis-switching phenomena were observed in the square nozzle flows examined here. This is attributed to the absence of an organized structure in the outer shear layer, which was initially highly turbulent, and the weakly coherent nature of the organized structure observed in the inner mixing-region near field. Large-scale vortical structures and associated mixing in methane/air swirling coaxial jets are actively controlled by manipulating the outer shear layer of the outer swirling coaxial jet with miniature flap actuators. In order to investigate the control mechanisms, stereoscopic particle image verocimetry (stereo-PIV) and plannar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) techniques are employed. It is found that intense vortex rings are produced in the outer shear layer in phase with the periodic flap motion regardless of the swirl number examined. The vortical structures in the inner shear layer, however, are strongly dependent on the swirl rate. This is because the central methane jet is accelerated by the negative axial pressure gradient, of which strength is determined by the swirl. As a result, the inner vortex formation is significantly suppressed at a higher swirl rate. On the other hand, at a relatively low swirl rate, the inner vortices are shed continuously and the methane jet is pinched off. This particular mode promotes the mixing of methane and air, so that the flammable mixture can be formed at an earlier stage of the jet flow development. In addition, the evolution of secondary streamwise vortices is prompted by the combination of the periodic vortex ring shedding and the swirl. They also contribute to the mixing enhancement in the downstream region.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulations of a turbulent Couette-Poiseuille flow with zero-mean-shear at the moving wall (SL-flow) is performed to examine flow features compared to those for a turbulent pure Poiseuille flow (P-flow). Profiles of the streamwise mean velocity, indicator function and ratio of production to dissipation show that the logarithmic region is significantly elongated for the SL-flow compared to that for the P-flow at a similar Reynolds number. In addition, the magnitudes of the Reynolds stresses are found to be larger in both inner and outer layers for the SL-flow than those for the P-flow. The spanwise spectra of the production term in the turbulent kinetic energy equation are examined to provide a structural basis for explaining the statistical behaviors. In addition, because the growth of the energy-containing motions extends to the outer layer further for the SL-flow due to the presence of a positive mean shear throughout the entire wall layer, the self-similar behavior of the energy balance between the production and transport terms with respect to the self-similar wavenumber is found far from the wall. We also find the increase in the number of uniform momentum zones in the SL-flow, revealing the hierarchical distribution of the energy-containing eddies which are composed of multiple uniform momentum zones. These coherent motions lead to the elongation of the logarithmic region for the SL-flow. Finally, investigation of the turbulent energy transfer process in a spectral domain for the SL-flow demonstrates importance of outer layer very-long structures, and these structures attribute to the energy transport process in an entire flow field.  相似文献

The paper presents results of numerical investigations of annular non–swirling jets. The research is performed with the use of large eddy simulations (LES) and a high–order code based on the compact differences and the Fourier approximation combined with a projection method for pressure–velocity coupling. We consider various Reynolds numbers and inner shear layer thicknesses and observe that both parameters affect the dynamics of the flow in such a way that the formation of the turbulent structures follows two different scenarios. For the particular group of the inlet conditions the flow pattern is found to be similar to low–swirling jets. The instantaneous flow–fields reveal the formation of the spiral structures located in the inner and outer mixing layers. The analysis shows that the structures are the result of the instability that leads to the precession of the recirculation region formed in the near–field. The winding sense of the spirals are clockwise or counterclockwise depending on the case and azimuthal distribution of perturbations.  相似文献

The present experimental work is devoted to in- vestigate a new space-time correlation model for the turbulent boundary layer over a flat and a wavy walls. A turbulent boundary layer flow at Reo = 2460 is measured by tomographic time-resolved particle image velocimetry (Tomo-TRPIV). The space-time correlations of instantaneous streamwise fluctuation velocity are calculated at 3 different wall-normal locations in logarithmic layer. It is found that the scales of coherent structure increase with moving far away from the wall. The growth of scales is a manifestation of the growth of prevalent coherent structures in the turbulent boundary layer like hairpin vortex or hairpin packets when they lift up. The resulting contours of the space-time correlation exhibit elliptic-like shapes rather than straight lines. It is suggested that, instead of Taylor hypothesis, the elliptic model of the space-time correlation is valid for the wallbounded turbulent flow over either a flat wall or a wavy wall. The elliptic iso-correlation curves have a uniform preferred orientation whose slope is determined by the convection velocity. The convection velocity derived from the space-time correlation represents the velocity at which the large-scale eddies carry small-scale eddies. The sweep velocity rep- resents the distortions of the small-scale eddies and is intimately associated with the fluctuation velocity in the logarithmic layer of turbulent boundary layers. The nondimensionalized correlation curves confirm that the elliptic model is more proper for approximating the space-time correlation than Taylor hypothesis, because the latter can not embody the small-scale motions which have non-negligible distortions. A second flow over a wavy wall is also recorded using TRPIV. Due to the combined effect of shear layers and the adverse pressure gradient, the space-time correlation does not show an elliptic-like shape at some specific heights over the wavy wall, but in the outer region of the wavy wallbounded flow, the elliptic model remai  相似文献

The present study concerns the role of heat release effects on characteristics mixing scales of turbulence in reacting wall-jet flows. Direct numerical simulations of exothermic reacting turbulent wall-jets are performed and compared to the isothermal reacting case. An evaluation of the heat-release effects on the structure of turbulence is given by examining the mixture fraction surface characteristics, diagnosing vortices and exploring the dissipation rate of the fuel and passive scalar concentrations, and moreover by illustration of probability density functions of reacting species and scatter plots of the local temperature against the mixture fraction. Primarily, heat release effects delay the transition, enlarge the fluctuation intensities of density and pressure and also enhance the fluctuation level of the species concentrations. However, it has a damping effect on all velocity fluctuation intensities and the Reynolds shear stress. A key result is that the fine-scale structures of turbulence are damped, the surface wrinkling is diminished and the vortices become larger due to heat-release effects. Taking into account the varying density by using semi-local scaling improves the collapse of the turbulence statistics in the inner region, but does not eliminate heat release induced differences in the outer region. Examining the two-dimensional premultiplied spanwise spectra of the streamwise velocity fluctuations indicates a shifting in the positions of the outer peaks, associated with large energetic structures, toward the inner region.  相似文献

The initial region of two interacting parallel plane jets with a truncated bluff body at the plane of symmetry is studied with velocity measurements in the frequency and time domains. The mean flows of the two plane jets are nearly parallel to the plane of symmetry, and their inner and outer mixing regions are found. Within these mixing regions their respective trains of coherent structures, which are of vortical form, are established. The inner vortices are inwardly rotational, while the outer vortices rotate outwardly. The successive initial vortices in the inner mixing region seem to undergo two processes of either pairing or amalgamation. The former results in the formation of a nearly circular coherent structure, while the latter results in the elongated structure. Both the inner and other structures experience fairly rapid decay. The process of decay also seems to be either the usual decay or the division of the coalesced structure back into the individual vortical structures followed by their decay.  相似文献

Mixing characteristics and coherent structures populating the near-nozzle area of a rotating-pipe jet at the Reynolds number of 5300 were studied by Large-eddy simulation (LES). The swirl rate, defined as the ratio of the tangential velocity of the inner pipe wall to the bulk axial velocity, varied from 0 to 1, corresponding to a weak-to-moderate swirl intensity, insufficient to induce reverse flow near the nozzle. The visualization shows that for the non-swirling jet the near-wall streaky structures generated in the pipe interact with the shear layer, evolving into hairpin-like structures that become tilted at low rotation rates. For higher swirl, they cannot be recognized as they are destroyed at the nozzle exit. No large-scale coherent structures akin to Kelvin–Helmholtz vortical rings in the ‘top-hat’ jets are identifiable close to the nozzle. Using the single and joint probability density functions of velocity and passive scalar (temperature) fields we quantify the events responsible for the intensive entrainment at various swirl numbers. The isosurface of the temperature field indicates the meandering and precessing motion of the rotating jet core at the axial distance of 6D downstream, where D is the diameter of the pipe. The Fourier analysis with respect to the azimuthal angle and time reveals an interplay between the co- and counter-rotating modes. These findings explain the previously detected but not fully clarified phenomenon of the weakly counter-rotating jet core at low swirl rates.  相似文献

Turbulent coherent structures near a rod-roughened wall are scrutinized by analyzing instantaneous flow fields obtained from direct numerical simulations (DNSs) of a turbulent boundary layer (TBL). The roughness elements used are periodically arranged two-dimensional spanwise rods, and the roughness height is k/δ = 0.05 where δ is the boundary layer thickness. The Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness is varied in the range Reθ = 300–1400. The effect of surface roughness is examined by comparing the characteristics of the TBLs over smooth and rough walls. Although introduction of roughness elements onto the smooth wall affects the Reynolds stresses throughout the entire boundary layer when scaled by the friction velocity, the roughness has little effect on the vorticity fluctuations in the outer layer. Pressure-strain tensors of the transport equation for the Reynolds stresses and quadrant analysis disclose that the redistribution of turbulent kinetic energy of the rough wall is similar to that of the smooth wall, and that the roughness has little effect on the relative contributions of ejection and sweep motions in the outer layer. To elucidate the modifications of the near-wall vortical structure induced by surface roughness, we used two-point correlations, joint weighted probability density function, and linear stochastic estimation. Finally, we demonstrate the existence of coherent structures in the instantaneous flow field over the rod-roughened surface.  相似文献

Vorticity stretching in wall-bounded turbulent and transitional flows has been investigated by means of a new diagnostic measure, denoted by Γ, designed to pick up regions with large amounts of vorticity stretching. It is based on the maximum vorticity stretching component in every spatial point, thus yielding a three-dimensional scalar field. The measure was applied in four different flows with increasing complexity: (a) the near-wall cycle in an asymptotic suction boundary layer (ASBL), (b) K-type transition in a plane channel flow, (c) fully turbulent channel flow at Re τ = 180 and (d) a complex turbulent three-dimensional separated flow. Instantaneous data show that the coherent structures associated with intense vorticity stretching in all four cases have the shape of flat ‘pancake’ structures in the vicinity of high-speed streaks, here denoted ‘h-type’ events. The other event found is of ‘l-type’, present on top of an unstable low-speed streak. These events (l-type) are further thought to be associated with the exponential growth of streamwise vorticity in the turbulent near-wall cycle. It was found that the largest occurrence of vorticity stretching in the fully turbulent wall-bounded flows is present at a wall-normal distance of y +?=?6.5, i.e. in the transition between the viscous sublayer and buffer layer. The associated structures have a streamwise length of ~200–300 wall units. In K-type transition, the Γ-measure accurately locates the regions of interest, in particular the formation of high-speed streaks near the wall (h-type) and the appearance of the hairpin vortex (l-type). In the turbulent separated flow, the structures containing large amounts of vorticity stretching increase in size and magnitude in the shear layer upstream of the separation bubble but vanish in the backflow region itself. Overall, the measure proved to be useful in showing growing instabilities before they develop into structures, highlighting the mechanisms creating high shear region on a wall and showing turbulence creation associated with instantaneous separations.  相似文献

The purpose of the present work is to study the various specific time scales of the turbulent separating flow around a square cylinder, in order to determine the Reynolds number effect on the separating shear layer, where occurs a transition to turbulence. Unsteady analysis based on large eddy simulation (LES) at intermediate Reynolds numbers and laser doppler velocimetry (LDV) measurements at high Reynolds numbers are carried out. The Reynolds number, based on the cylinder diameter D and the inflow velocity U o , is ranging from Re?=?50 to Re?=?300,000. A special focus is performed on the coherent structures developing on the sides and in the wake of a square cylinder. For a large Reynolds number range above Re?≈?1,000, both signatures of Von Karman (VK) and Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH) type vortical structures are found on velocity time samples. The combination of their frequency signature is studied based on Fourier and wavelet analysis. In the present study, We observe the occurrence of KH pairings in the separating shear layer on the side of the cylinder, and confirm the intermittency nature of such a shear flow. These issues concerning the structure of the near wake shear layer which were addressed for the round cylinder case in a recent experimental publication (Rajagopalan and Antonia, Exp Fluids 38:393–402, 2005) are of interest in the present flow configuration as well.  相似文献

The mean velocity field of a 30° inclined wall jet has been investigated using both hot-wire and laser Doppler anemometry (LDA). Provided that the nozzle aspect ratio is greater than 30 and the inclined wall angle (β) is less than 50°, LDA measurements for various β show that the reattachment length is independent of the nozzle aspect ratio and the nozzle exit Reynolds number (in the range 6670–13,340). There is general agreement between the reattachment lengths determined by LDA and those determined using wall surface oil film visualisation technique. The role of coherent structures arising from initial instabilities of a 30° wall jet has been explored by hot-wire spectra measurements. Results indicate that the fundamental vortex roll-up frequency in both the inner and outer shear layer corresponds to a Strouhal number (based on nozzle exit momentum thickness and velocity) of 0.012. The spatial development of instabilities in the jet has been studied by introducing acoustic excitation at a frequency corresponding to the shear layer mode. The formation of the fundamental and its first subharmonic has been identified in the outer shear layer. However, the development of the first subharmonic in the inner shear layer has been severely suppressed. Distributions of mean velocities, turbulence intensities and Reynolds shear stress indicate that controlled acoustic excitation enhances the development of instabilities and promotes jet reattachment to the wall, resulting in a substantially reduced recirculation flow region. Measurements of the spatial and time variation of two components of the velocity have been made over a sinusoidal solid wavy boundary with a height to length ratio of 2a/λ = 0.10 and with a dimensionless wave number of α+ = (2π/λ)(v/u ?) = 0.02. For these conditions, both intermittent and time-mean flow reversals are observed near the troughs of the waves. Statistical quantities that are determined are the mean streamwise and normal velocities, the root-meansquare of the fluctuations of the streamwise and normal velocities, and the Reynolds shear stresses. Turbulence production is calculated from these measurements. The flow is characterized by an outer flow and by an inner flow extending to a distance of about α?1 from the mean level of the surface. Turbulence production in the inner region is fundamentally different from flow over a flat surface in that it is mainly associated with a shear layer that separates from the back of the wave. Flow close to the surface is best described by an interaction between the shear layer and the wall, which produces a retarded zone and a boundary-layer with large wall shear stresses. Measurements of the outer flow compare favorably with measurements over a flat wall if velocities are made dimensionless by a friction velocity defined with a shear stress obtained by extrapolating measurements of the Reynolds stress to the mean levels of the surface (rather than from the drag on the wall).  相似文献

In the present paper the coherent structures in the outer region of turbulent boundary layer were investigated experimentally and analytically. From the observation of the flow field over smooth wall, rough wall and sand wave wall, it was found that the direct effect of wall on the flow structure can reachy +1≈100, and both lateral and vertical vortices exist in the outer region, but the coherent structures in the outer region are mainly the formation, development and decay of the large-scale lateral vortices. By experimental and dynamical analysis, some influence factors and their relations associated with the dynamical process of lateral vortices were deduced.
