Characteristics of cross flow around three rectangular cylinders with two aspect ratios of breadth to width arranged in connected and separated Y-shape at various angles of incident flow were studied by means of force measurement in a wind tunnel. Flow visualizations with smoke-wire technique for typical cases were also given. Different types of flow patterns were formed for individual models at different angles of incident flow. From the results of fluctuating velocity measurement in the wake, features of vibration were determined. It shows that as the wind blows along the lines of one limb or rectangular cylinder of the model, oscillation is weak, whereas when the wind blows along the bisector lines of two limbs or cylinders, strong vibration is observed. It is associated with the regular vortex shedding. The project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (10172008)The English text was polished by Keren Wang 相似文献

The flow fields around three elongated bluff bodies with the same chord-to-thickness ratios but distinct leading and trailing edge details were measured at a Reynolds number of 3×104. These models each represent a case where: leading edge shedding dominates, trailing edge shedding dominates and a case where there is a balance between the two. The results show that the vortex street parameters vary between the models, and in particular, the shedding frequencies are significantly altered by the geometry. However, contrary to the current understanding for shorter bluff bodies, the scale of the recirculation region is found to be similar for each model, even though the shedding frequency changes within the range from 0.15 to 0.24. Also, the base pressure does not follow trends with shedding frequency expected from shorter bluff bodies. A force balance of the recirculation region shows that the near wake of each body is significantly affected by the Reynolds shear stress distribution and the resultant force due to the pressure field in the mean recirculation region. These differences infer that the distinct vortex formation characteristics depend on the state of the trailing edge shear layers. The boundary layers at the trailing edge have been quantified, as have the leading edge separation bubbles, and the marked differences in the wake details are shown to depend on the leading edge separation. 相似文献

The flapping flag is a canonical fluid–structure interaction problem that describes a cantilever plate with flow along its elastic axis. When the flapping flag loses stability it enters a large amplitude Limit Cycle Oscillation (LCO). While theoretical models can accurately predict the flutter velocity and frequency, there are still discrepancies between the experimental observations and the theoretical predictions of the post-critical LCO response. This note provides recent flow field visualizations in a single longitudinal plane for a cantilevered aluminum plate in axial flow during its LCO. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) techniques are used to show that the flow over the midspan of the plate is attached even during the violent LCO motion. This observation suggests that potential flow aerodynamic models may be able to capture the essential features in the flow field. 相似文献

Flow interference between a stationary cylinder and an elastically mounted cylinder arranged in proximity 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The flow interference between two circular cylinders, one stationary and the other free to oscillate in the transverse direction, are studied numerically at Re=150. The incompressible Navier–Stokes equation in two space dimensions, an assumption that is expected to be valid at the considered Re, is solved by the characteristic-based-split (CBS) finite element method using the T4/C3 MINI triangular element. The center-to-center spacing between the two cylinders is fixed at 4D, where D is the cylinder diameter. The angle of incident flow, α, with respect to the line through the two cylinder centers, varies within the range from α=0° to 90°. For the elastically mounted cylinder, the reduced mass considered is Mr=2.0; the structural damping coefficient is assigned to be zero, which encourages high amplitude oscillations. For each α, the computations are conducted for a wide range of reduced velocities, Ur. The flow interference is examined by scrutinizing (i) the frequency characteristics of the vortex shedding and oscillation; (ii) the dynamic response of the oscillating cylinder, including the amplitude of displacement, the drag and lift force characteristics and the phase relationship between the lift and the displacement series; and (iii) the flow response in terms of the instantaneous vorticity field. It was found that the flow interference type is significantly affected by the angle of the incident flow. As the cylinder is oscillated outside of the region of the wake behind the stationary cylinder (α≥30°), it behaves similarly to its isolated counterpart. In contrast, if the cylinder is partially or entirely submerged within the upstream wake (α<30°), then both the flow and body responses are substantially modified due to the vigorous interaction between the upstream wake and the oscillating cylinder; the response therefore belongs to the wake-induced regime. The Ur range associated with the higher amplitude response is significantly shifted toward a higher Ur. The maximum vibration amplitude builds up to a significantly higher level, even increasing the Ur far beyond the resonance regime. In general, the wake flow associated with the wake-induced vibration (WIV) regime appears to be more unperiodic than does that corresponding to the vortex-induced oscillation regime. It is also revealed that both the vortex-cylinder and the shear layer-cylinder interaction mechanisms are responsible for the characteristics of the responses of oscillating cylinder. The larger momentum required for the higher oscillation amplitude is obtained from the duration of the energy transfer from the fluid to the cylinder, which is ascribed to the phase lag between the lift force and the cylinder displacement. 相似文献

The velocity field generated by thermal convection in a model porous medium is experimentally determined by means of both PIV and LDA techniques. Details of matching refraction index under non isothermal conditions are given. Fields are measured in the empty parallelepipedic cell and in a model medium made of parallel circular bundles. Results are in good agreement. Moreover, by an averaging technique, we are able to measure seeping velocity profiles. 相似文献

Combined Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) measurements have been performed in dilute suspensions of rod-like particles in wall turbulence. PIV results for the turbulence field in the water table flow apparatus compared favorably with data from Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of channel flow turbulence and the universality of near-wall turbulence justified comparisons with DNS of fiber-laden channel flow. In order to examine any shape effects on the dynamical behavior of elongated particles in wall-bounded turbulent flow, fibers with three different lengths but the same diameter were used. In the logarithmic part of the wall-layer, the translational fiber velocity was practically unaffected by the fiber length l. In the buffer layer, however, the fiber dynamics turned out to be severely constrained by the distance z to the wall. The short fibers accumulated preferentially in low-speed areas and adhered to the local fluid speed. The longer fibers (l/z > 1) exhibited a bi-modal probability distribution for the fiber velocity, which reflected an almost equal likelihood for a long fiber to reside in an ejection or in a sweep. It was also observed that in the buffer region, high-speed long fibers were almost randomly oriented whereas for all size cases the slowly moving fibers preferentially oriented in the streamwise direction. These phenomena have not been observed in DNS studies of fiber suspension flows and suggested l/z to be an essential parameter in a new generation of wall-collision models to be used in numerical studies. 相似文献

Flow-induced fluctuating lift (CLf) and drag (CDf) forces and Strouhal numbers (St) of a cylinder submerged in the wake of another cylinder are investigated experimentally for Reynolds number (Re)=9.7×103–6.5×104. The spacing ratio L⁎ (=L/D) between the cylinders is varied from 1.1 to 4.5, where L is the spacing between the cylinders and D is the cylinder diameter. The results show that CLf, CDf and St are highly sensitive to Re due to change in the inherent nature of the flow structure. How the flow structure is dependent on Re and L⁎ is presented in a flow structure map. Zdravkovich and Pridden (1977) observed a ‘kink’ in time-mean drag distribution at L⁎≈2.5 for Re>3.1×104, but not for Re≤3.1×104. The physics is provided here behind the presence and absence of the ‘kink’ that was left unexplained since then. 相似文献

The present work is an experimental study of two oscillating rigid plates placed in side-by-side configuration, hinged at their leading edges, subjected to low subsonic flow. This problem is investigated using smoke-wire flow visualization, hot-wire anemometry, and time resolved particle image velocimetry. It is found that beyond a critical Reynolds number, the plates set into oscillatory motion. This critical Reynolds number depends on the gap between the plates. It is also seen that this value of Reynolds number, at lower values of gap to thickness ratio (<7) is significantly higher than that of the single plate configuration value. The frequency and amplitude of the oscillating plates at various gaps and Reynolds numbers have been studied and compared with the characteristics of an oscillating single plate. It is also found that depending on the gap and acceleration of the free-stream, there exist two modes of oscillation - (i) in-phase and (ii) out-of-phase. For gap to thickness ratio less than 10, only in-phase oscillations take place for all values of free-stream velocity considered in the present work, whereas, when this ratio is greater than 10, the mode of oscillation depends on the initial conditions up to a certain free-stream velocity, beyond which the plates switch to in-phase mode. Smoke wire flow visualization technique along with time resolved particle image velocimetry reveal that the vorticity distributions around the plates are responsible for the initiation of the two modes of oscillations. 相似文献

The resuspension of graphite dust is an important phenomenon in the release of radioactivity and the safety of nuclear reactors during severe accidents. In this study, a visualization experimental platform is constructed to study effects of particle size, flow velocity, and wall roughness on the resuspension characteristics of graphite particles. A statistical model of particle resuspension applicable to monolayer dispersed particles is developed based on the moment equilibrium of the particles and the flow field characteristics, as calculated by the large-eddy simulation framework. The results show that particle resuspension can be divided into short- and long-term resuspension stages. Most particle resuspension occurs during the short-term stage. With increases in flow velocity and particle diameter, the aerodynamic or adhesion force acting on the particles increases, and corresponding particle resuspension fraction increases. The influence of rough walls on particle resuspension is related to both the force on the particles and the arm ratio between the wall morphology and the particle diameter. A comparison with the experimental results demonstrates that the particle resuspension model developed in this study accurately predicts the impact of flow velocity, particle size, and wall roughness on particle resuspension. 相似文献

Transformation of flow turbulence structure with cavitation occurrence, determination of the flow conditions favorable for nucleation of cavitation bubbles, influence of the statistical structure of turbulence on this process and the inverse effect of cavitation on the flow dynamics are challenging problems in modern fluid mechanics. The paper reports on the results of statistical processing of the velocity fields measured by a PIV technique in cavitating flow over a 2D symmetric hydrofoil for four flow conditions, starting from a cavitation-free regime and finishing by unsteady cloud cavitation. We analyze basic information on the statistical structure of velocity fluctuations in the form of histograms and Q-Q diagrams along with profiles of the mean velocity and turbulent kinetic energy. The research reveals that the flow turbulence pattern and distributions of turbulent fluctuations change significantly with the cavitation development. Under unsteady cloud cavitation conditions, the probability density function of the fluctuating velocity has a two-mode distribution, which indicates switching of two alternating flow conditions in a region above the hydrofoil aft part due to periodic passing of cavitation clouds. Behaviors of the mean and most probable velocities unexpectedly appear to be different with a monotonous increase of the incoming flow velocity. This finding must be caused by modification of the skewness coefficient of the fluctuating velocity. 相似文献

Flow visualization and LDV measurements of laminar flow in a helical square duct with finite pitch 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Flow visualization and LDV measurements are performed on laminar flow in a helical square duct with finite pitch. The experimental observations are compared to results of numerical calculations employing the finite-volume method and assuming a fully developed flow. Good agreement is found between measured and computed velocity profiles. This suggests that the physical velocity components used in the numerical calculations are suitable to describe the flow. It is further demonstrated that the contravariant velocity components employed by some authors may lead to results that are difficult to interpret. Two stable solution branches are detected in the numerical calculations. For Reynolds numbers between the stable branches, unsteady and fully developed computations predict an oscillating flow between a two-vortex and a four-vortex structure. In the experiments, the flow normally retained a stable two-vortex structure in the numerically predicted unstable regime. However, by disturbing the flow at the duct inlet, a four-vortex flow that showed similarities to the computed flow could occasionally be obtained. For Reynolds numbers above 600, unsteady flow behavior was observed both experimentally and numerically, which might be an early sign of transition. In the experiments, Gdrtler-like extra vortices emerged spontaneously from the outer wall without disturbing the flow at the inlet. The same phenomenon was observed in the numerical calculations, assuming an unsteady and fully developed flow, but the extra vortices appeared with a lower frequency than in the experiments. 相似文献
