Crystallization of oligomers was applied for the preparation of single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs)/poly(p‐oxybenzoyl) (POB) crystals using SWNTs as a nucleating agent. Polymerization conditions were investigated to induce the crystallization of POB oligomers through SWNTs. SWNTs/POB plate‐like or lozenge‐shaped crystals were successfully prepared by direct polymerization of p‐hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA) in a mixed solvent of DMF/Py with TsCl in the presence of functionalized SWNTs. The size of the plate‐like crystals were ~200 nm to 3 μm. The crystals consisted of some layers, ~3 nm thick plates. Model reactions showed that esterification reactions proceed between functionalized SWNTs and HBA monomers in the polymerization system. The obtained crystals exhibited unique morphology and high crystallinity, producing a novel SWNT/POB hybrid. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The dual self‐assembling polycondensation of p‐acetoxybenzoic acid (ABA) and p‐acetamidobenzoic acid in Therm S 800 was examined at 300 °C. Needle‐like crystals and lath‐like crystals were formed simultaneously through reaction‐induced crystallization of oligomers at a molar ratio of 30–50 mol‐% ABA in the feed. The needle‐like crystals comprised more p‐oxybenzoyl units, whereas the lath‐like ones contained higher amounts of p‐benzamide moieties.

Polymerization of 4‐acetoxybenzoic acid (ABA) with 3,5‐diacetoxybenzoic acid (DABA) was examined to control the morphology of poly(p‐oxybenzoyl) (POB). Polymerizations were carried out at a concentration of 1.0% in an aromatic solvent Therm S‐1000® (mixture of dibenzyltoluene) at 320 °C. Polymerization of ABA yielded the POB fibrillar crystals, but the polymerization with DABA at a concentration in the feed (χf) of 0.10–0.15 afforded novel network structures comprised of spheres connected by fibrillar crystals. The diameter of the spheres prepared at χf of 0.15, which were 0.7 and 5.0 μm, showed bimodality. The network distance, fibril length, and fibril width were 6.1, 2.6, and 0.1 μm, respectively. They possessed high crystallinity. The network structure was formed as follows. Co‐oligomers were first precipitated in the beginning of the polymerization by liquid–liquid phase separation to form the microdroplets. The fibrillar crystals were formed in the coalesced spheres by the crystallization of oligomers induced by the increase of molecular weight. The fibrillar crystals connecting the spheres gradually appeared owing to the shrinkage of the spheres. The fibrillar crystals grew from the surface of the spheres with the crystallization of homo‐oligomers of 4‐oxybenzoyl units, and finally the network structure was completed. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Selective preparation of poly(p‐oxybenzoyl) (POB) in the copolymerization system of p‐acetoxybenzoic acid (p‐ABA) and m‐acetoxybenzoic acid (m‐ABA) was examined by using reaction‐induced crystallization of oligomers. Polymer crystals mainly composed of p‐oxybenzoyl moiety were precipitated when the content of m‐ABA in the feed was 30 mol %. The formation of the polymer crystals was attributed to both the reactivity of monomer and the phase‐separation behavior of oligomer. Reactivity of p‐ABA was twice higher than that of m‐ABA, and thereby, the homo‐oligomers of p‐oxybenzoyl moiety were more rapidly formed in solution than do co‐oligomers at the early stage in polymerization. They were selectively precipitated by crystallization to form crystals because of low miscibility. Co‐oligomers containing m‐oxybenzoyl moiety were also formed in solution, but they were unable to be phase‐separated because of higher miscibility. Further polycondensation occurred between oligomers in the precipitated crystals, leading to the formation of POB. This polymerization proceeded with selecting certain monomers by crystallization and afforded a new methodology for fractional polycondensation. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Resonance Raman spectra of poly(p‐phenylenebenzobisoxazole) (PBO), poly(p‐phenylenebenzobisthazole) (PBZT), and poly(pyridobisimidazole) (PIPD) were measured. In the case of PBO, no large dependence on wavelength of excited laser can be observed, whereas in the cases of PBZT and PIPD, the spectra depends on wavelength of excited laser. This difference may be attributed to the colors of the samples: PBO is gold, and PBZT and PIPD are metallic blue, which show the different conjugated states. The spectra of PBO are rather simpler than those of PBZT and PIPD. This is considered to be reflected by the fact that only a chain passes through the unit cell of PBO, while two chains pass through the unit cell of PBZT and PIPD. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(p‐oxybenzoyl) (POB) crystals were prepared with the reaction‐induced crystallization of oligomers during the direct polycondensation of p‐hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA) with p‐toluenesulfonyl chloride (TsCl) and N,N‐dimethylformamide in pyridine. Sheaflike lozenge‐shaped POB crystals were obtained, of which the longer diagonal was 7.0–8.0 μm. The influence of the polymerization condition on the morphology was examined to optimize the preparative condition for the crystals exhibiting the clearest habit, and the favorable condition was determined as the molar ratio of TsCl to HBA of 1.3 and polymerization concentration of 3.0%. The crystals possessed extremely high crystallinity and outstanding thermal stability. The formation mechanism of the crystal was proposed as follows. When the number‐average degree of polymerization of the oligomers exceeded a critical value of about 4, they were precipitated to form the hexagonal lamellae. The crystals were grown very quickly to lozenge‐shaped crystal through screw dislocation with the continuous precipitation of oligomers from the solution. Finally, the further polymerization occurred in the precipitated crystal with developing polymer‐chain packing. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Selective preparation of poly(p‐oxybenzoyl) (POB) crystals was examined from the viewpoint of a dimer effect on fractional polycondensation. Four different copolymerization systems were chosen as the combinations of p‐acetoxybenzoic acid (p‐ABA), m‐acetoxybenzoic acid (m‐ABA), and their dimers. The crystals obtained from the copolymerization of the dimer of p‐ABA (p‐ABAD) and m‐ABA contained only 3.1 mol % of m‐oxybenzoyl moiety even at high content of m‐oxybenzoyl moiety in feed (χf) of 40 mol %. p‐Oxybenzoyl homo‐oligomers were more rapidly formed from p‐ABAD in the solution than from p‐ABA, and they were crystallized to form the crystals with segregating co‐oligomers. While co‐oligomers containing more m‐oxybenzoyl moiety were formed in the solution, afterward they were unable to be phase‐separated because of higher miscibility. The further polycondensation proceeded in the precipitated crystal, and finally the POB crystal was selectively formed. Lower polymerization temperature and concentration enhanced the fractionability, and the POB crystals containing less than 1 mol % m‐oxybenzoyl moiety were prepared at χf of 30 mol %, 270 °C, and a concentration of 0.5%. The dimer effect on the fractional polycondensation was clearly observed. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 1598–1606, 2008  相似文献

The enzyme‐catalyzed synthesis of poly(p‐ethylphenol) (PEP) has received considerable interest in recent years. Nevertheless, the limited molecular weights restricts its application. In our preliminary research, PEP was modified by copolymerization with polycarbonates through both transesterification at high temperature, and triphosgene at low temperature to form polycarbonate‐co‐poly(p‐ethylphenol) (PC‐co‐PEP). FTIR, NMR, GPC, and thermal analysis verified the formation of PC‐co‐PEP. The copolymers have an optical absorption in the UV range. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. To simplify the fabrication of multilayer light‐emitting diodes, we prepared a p‐phenylenevinylene‐based polymer capped with crosslinkable styrene through a Wittig reaction. Insoluble poly(p‐phenylenevinylene) derivative (PPVD) films were prepared by a thermal treatment. The photoluminescence and ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) absorbance of crosslinked films and noncrosslinked films were studied. We also studied the solvent resistance of crosslinked PPV films with UV–vis absorption spectra and atomic force microscopy. Double‐layer devices using crosslinked PPVD as an emitting layer, 2‐(4‐tert‐butylphenyl)‐5‐phenyl‐1,3,4‐oxadiazole (PBD) in poly(methyl methacrylate) as an electron‐transporting layer, and calcium as a cathode were fabricated. A maximum luminance efficiency of 0.70 cd/A and a maximum brightness of 740 cd/m2 at 16 V were demonstrated. A 12‐fold improvement in the luminance efficiency with respect to that of single‐layer devices was realized. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The lamellar‐level morphology of an extruded poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/poly(ethylene‐2,6‐naphthalate) (PEN) blend was investigated with small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS). Measurements were made as a function of the annealing time in the melt and the crystallization temperature. The characteristic morphological parameters at the lamellar level were determined by correlation function analysis of the SAXS data. At a low crystallization temperature of 120 °C, the increased amorphous layer thickness was identified in the blend, indicating that some PEN was incorporated into the interlamellar regions of PET during crystallization. The blend also showed a larger lamellar thickness than pure PET. A reason for the increase in the lamellar thickness might be that the formation of thinner lamellar stacks by secondary crystallization was significantly restricted because of the increased glass‐transition temperature. At high crystallization temperatures above 200 °C, the diffusion rates of noncrystallizable components were faster than the growth rates of crystals, with most of the noncrystallizable components escaping from the lamellar stacks. As a result, the blend showed an interfibrillar or interspherulitic morphology. © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 40: 317–324, 2002  相似文献

Water‐soluble and photoluminescent block copolymers [poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly(p‐phenylene vinylene) (PEO‐b‐PPV)] were synthesized, in two steps, by the addition of α‐halo‐α′‐alkylsulfinyl‐p‐xylene from activated poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) chains in tetrahydrofuran at 25 °C. This copolymerization, which was derived from the Vanderzande poly(p‐phenylene vinylene) (PPV) synthesis, led to partly converted PEO‐b‐PPV block copolymers mixed with unreacted PEO chains. The yield, length, and composition of these added sequences depended on the experimental conditions, namely, the order of reagent addition, the nature of the monomers, and the addition of an extra base. The addition of lithium tert‐butoxide increased the length of the PPV precursor sequence and reduced spontaneous conversion. The conversion into PPV could be achieved in a second step by a thermal treatment. A spectral analysis of the reactive medium and the composition of the resulting polymers revealed new evidence for an anionic mechanism of the copolymerization process under our experimental conditions. Moreover, the photoluminescence yields were strongly dependant on the conjugation length and on the solvent, with a maximum (70%) in tetrahydrofuran and a minimum (<1%) in water. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Starting from the pyrylium salt and following a facile synthetic route, we synthesized and polymerized 4,4″‐diiodo‐2′,6′‐di[4‐(2′‐ethylhexyl)oxy]phenyl‐p‐terphenyl with p‐divinylbenzene or p‐diethynylbenzene. The resulting polymers had moderate molecular weights, were amorphous, and dissolved in tetrahydrofuran and chloroform, with glass‐transition temperatures of 120–131 °C. The polymers behaved as violet‐blue‐emitting materials with photoluminescence maxima around 420 and 450 nm in solution and in thin films, respectively. They possessed well‐defined chromophores resulting from steric interactions in the polymer chain. The photoluminescence quantum yields were up to 0.29. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Melt‐processable blends were prepared from rigid molecules of an ionically modified poly(p‐phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) and flexible‐coil molecules of poly(4‐vinylpyridine) (PVP). Dynamic mechanical analyses of blends with 50% or more of the ionic PPTA component revealed the presence of two distinct phases. The glass‐transition temperature of the more stable, ionic PPTA‐rich phase increased linearly with the ionic PPTA content. The second phase present in these blends was an ionic PPTA‐poor, or a PVP‐rich, phase. For this phase, a reasonably good fit of the data, showing the glass‐transition temperature as a function of the ionic PPTA content, was achieved between the results of this study and the reported results of previous investigation of molecular composites of the same two components with ionic PPTA contents of 15 wt % or less. The possible influence of annealing on the blend structure of a 90/10 blend of ionic PPTA and PVP was examined. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of amphiphilic biodegradable and biocompatible poly(p‐dioxanone)‐grafted poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) copolymers with well‐defined structure were obtained by a three‐step synthesis based on the “grafting from” concept. The first step (protection step), called the partial silylation of PVA hydroxyl groups, was accomplished by 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexamethyldisilazane and catalyst chlorotrimethylsilane in dimethyl sulfoxide using THF as cosolvent. The second step was the ring‐opening polymerization of p‐dioxanone (PDO) initiated from the remaining OH groups of the partially silylated PVA. Finally, a deprotection step was followed: the silylether group was deprotected easily under very mild conditions. The synthetic conditions of the first two steps were investigated, and the structures of polymers formed in each step were characterized by various analytical methods. The results showed that the molecular structure of the PVA‐g‐PPDO could be controlled easily by the degree of silylation and the feed ratio. In addition, the micellization of amphiphilic PVA‐g‐PPDO copolymers in water was proved by fluorescence spectra and dynamic light scattering, and the relationship between structural parameters of copolymers and micellar properties was studied preliminarily. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(lactide‐co‐glycolide) (PLGA) copolymers are a kind of biocompatible and biodegradable materials being widely used in tissue engineering. However, phase separation had not been reported successfully in fabricating these amorphous polymers into nanofibrous matrix, although this technique had shown advantages over electrospinning in producing a nanofiber network. In this study, tetrahydrofuran (THF)/H2O solvent pairs were found suitable solvents to induce the formation of uniform PLGA gel at selected gelation temperatures. The results indicated that fine nanofibrous structures with fiber diameter around 40–60 nm could be obtained following the steps of gel formation, solvent extraction, and freeze‐drying, by controlling the concentration of PLGA/THF/H2O solution, THF/H2O ratio, and gelation temperature. Poly(p‐phenylene vinylene) (PPV), poly(2,5‐dioctyl‐p‐phenylene vinylene) (PDOPPV), and poly[2‐methoxy‐5‐(2′‐ethylhexyloxy)‐p‐phenylene vinylene] (MEHPPV) were synthesized by a liquid–solid two‐phase reaction. The liquid phase was tetrahydrofuran containing 1,4‐bis(bromomethyl)benzene, 1,4‐bis(chloromethyl)‐2,5‐dioctylbenzene, or 1,4‐bis(chloromethyl)‐2‐methoxyl‐5‐(2′‐ethylhexyloxy)benzene as the monomer and a certain amount of tetrabutylammonium bromide as a phase‐transfer catalyst. The solid phase consisted of potassium hydroxide particles with diameters smaller than 2 mm. The experimental results demonstrated that the reaction conversions of PPV and PDOPPV were fairly high (~65%), but the conversion of MEHPPV was only 45%. Moreover, gelation was found in the polymerization processes. As a result, PPV was insoluble and PDOPPV and MEHPPV were partially soluble in the usual organic solvents, such as tetrahydrofuran and chloroform. Soluble PDOPPV and MEHPPV were obtained with chloromethylbenzene or bromomethylbenzene as a retardant regent. The molar mass of soluble PDOPPV was measured to be 2 × 104 g mol?1, and that of MEHPPV was 6 × 104 g mol?1. A thin, compact film of MEHPPV was formed via spin coating, and it emitted a yellow light. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 41: 449–455, 2003  相似文献

Segmented copolyesters, namely, poly(butylene terephthalate)–poly(ethylene terephthalate‐co‐isophthalate‐co‐sebacate) (PBT‐PETIS), were synthesized with the melting transesterification processing in vacuo condition involving bulk polyester produced on a large scale (PBT) and ternary amorphous random copolyester (PETIS). Investigations on the morphology of segmented copolyesters were undertaken. The two‐phase morphology model was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. One of the phases was composed of crystallizable PBT, and the other was a homogeneous mixture of PETIS and noncrystallizable PBT. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this paper, the electroluminescent properties of a new partially‐conjugated hyperbranched poly (p‐phenylene vinylene) (HPPV) were studied. The single layer light‐emitting device with HPPV as the emitting layer emits blue‐green light at 496 nm, with a luminance of 160 cd/m2 at 9 V, a turn‐on voltage of 4.3 V and an electroluminescent efficiency of 0.028 cd/A. By doping an electron‐transport material [2‐(4‐biphenylyl)‐5‐phenyl‐1,3,4‐oxadiazole, PBD] into the emitting layer and inserting a thin layer of tris(8‐hydroxy‐quinoline)aluminum (Alq3) as electron transporting/hole blocking layer for the devices, the electroluminescent efficiency of 1.42 cd/A and luminance of 1700 cd/m2 were achieved. The results demonstrate that the devices with the hyperbranched polymers as emitting material can achieve high efficiency through optimization of device structures. Poly(p‐dioxanone) (PPDO)/vermiculite (VMT) nanocomposites with exfoliated structure were prepared successfully by in situ intercalative polymerization of p‐dioxanone (PDO) in the presence of organo‐modified vermiculite (OVMT) with the aid of ultrasonic action. The nano‐structure of the nanocomposites was established using X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations. The investigation of crystallization behavior by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM) proved that exfoliated OVMT platelets acted as a template for spherulite growth. The thermal stability of nanocomposites was enhanced than that of pure PPDO. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) indicated nanoscale OVMT platelets restricted the motion of PPDO segments, which benefitted the increase of storage and loss modulus. The tensile properties showed that nanocomposites were reinforced and toughened significantly by the addition of nanoscale OVMT platelets. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A series of poly(trimethylenecarbonate‐ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(p‐dioxanone) copolymers were prepared with varying feed rations by using two step polymerization reactions. Poly(trimethylenecarbonate)(ε‐caprolactone) random copolymer was synthesized with stannous‐2‐ethylhexanoate and followed by adding p‐dioxanone monomer as the other block. The ring opening polymerization was carried out at high temperature and long reaction time to get high molecular weight polymers. The monofilament fibers were obtained using conventional melting spun methods. The copolymers were identified by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The physicochemical properties, such as viscosity, molecular weight, melting point, glass transition temperature, and crystallinity, were studied. The hydrolytic degradation of copolymers was studied in a phosphate buffer solution, pH = 7.2, 37 °C, and a biological absorbable test was performed in rats. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
