Effects of a conductive wall on natural convection in a square porous enclosure having internal heating at a rate proportional to a power of temperature difference is studied numerically in this article. The horizontal heating is considered, where the vertical walls heated isothermally at different temperatures while the horizontal walls are kept adiabatic. The Darcy model is used in the mathematical formulation for the porous layer and finite difference method is applied to solve the dimensionless governing equations. The governing parameters considered are the Rayleigh number (0 ???Ra ???1000), the internal heating and the local exponent parameters (0 ????? ???5), (1 ????? ???3), the wall to porous thermal conductivity ratio (0.44 ???Kr ???9.9) and the ratio of wall thickness to its width (0.02 ???D ???0.5). The results are presented to show the effect of these parameters on the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics. It is found a strong internal heating can generate significant maximum fluid temperature more than the conductive solid wall. Increasing value thermal conductivity ratio and/or decreasing the thickness of solid wall can increase the maximum fluid temperature. It is also found that at very low Rayleigh number, the heat transfer across the porous enclosure remain stable for any values of the thermal conductivity ratio.  相似文献

This paper presents an analytical and numerical study of transient free convection from a horizontal surface that is embedded in a fluid-saturated porous medium. It is assumed that for time steady state velocity and temperature fields are obtained in the boundary-layer which occurs due to a uniform flux dissipation rate q 1 on the surface. Then, at the heat flux on the surface is suddenly changed to q 2 and maintained at this value for . Firstly, solutions which are valid for small and large are obtained. The full boundary-layer equations are then integrated step-by-step for the transient regime from the initial unsteady state ( ) until such times at which this forward marching approach is no longer well posed. Beyond this time no valid solutions could be obtained which matched the final solution from the forward integration to the steady state profiles at large times .

This work studies the Soret and Dufour effects on the double-diffusive free convection over a downward-pointing vertical truncated cone with variable wall heat and mass fluxes in fluid-saturated porous media. A coordinate transformation is used to derive the nondimensional boundary-layer governing equations, and the obtained nonsimilar equations are then solved by the cubic spline collocation method. Results for local surface temperature and the local surface concentration are presented as functions of Soret parameters, Dufour parameters, power-law exponents, buoyancy ratios, and Lewis numbers. Results show that increasing the Dufour parameter tends to increase the local surface temperature, while it tends to decrease the local surface concentration. An increase in the Soret number leads to a decrease in the local surface temperature for buoyancy assisting flows, while it leads to an increase in the local surface temperature for buoyancy opposing flows. Increasing the Soret number tends to increase the local surface concentration. Moreover, the local surface temperature and the local surface concentration of the truncated cones with higher power-law exponents are lower than those with lower exponents.  相似文献

Unsteady natural convection flow in a two-dimensional square cavity filled with a porous material has been studied. The flow is initially steady where the left-hand vertical wall has temperature T h and the right-hand vertical wall is maintained at temperature T c (T h > T c) and the horizontal walls are insulated. At time t > 0, the left-hand vertical wall temperature is suddenly raised to which introduces unsteadiness in the flow field. The partial differential equations governing the unsteady natural convection flow have been solved numerically using a finite control volume method. The computation has been carried out until the final steady state is reached. It is found that the average Nusselt number attains a minimum during the transient period and that the time required to reach the final steady state is longer for low Rayleigh number and shorter for high Rayleigh number.  相似文献

The effect of density maximum of water on double-diffusive natural convection in a two-dimensioned cavity filled with a water saturated isotropic porous medium is studied numerically. The horizontal walls of the cavity are insulated. The opposing vertical walls are kept at different temperatures θ h (linearly varies with height) and θ c (θ c θ h ). The concentration levels at cold wall and hot wall are, respectively, c 1 and c 2 with c 1 > c 2. Brinkman-Forchheimer extended Darcy model is used to investigate the average heat and mass transfer rates. The non-dimensional equations for momentum, energy, and concentration are solved by finite volume method with power law scheme for convection and diffusion terms. The results are presented in the form of streamlines, isotherms, and isoconcentration lines for various values of Grashof numbers, Schmidt number, porosity, and Darcy numbers. It is observed that the density maximum of water has profound effect on the thermosolutal convection. The effects of different parameters on the velocity, temperature, and species concentrations are also shown graphically.  相似文献

The effect of power law index parameter of the non-Newtonian fluid on free convection heat and mass transfer from a vertical wall is analyzed by considering double dispersion in a non-Darcy porous medium with constant wall temperature and concentration conditions. The Ostwald–de Waele power law model is used to characterize the non-Newtonian fluid behavior. In this case a similarity solution is possible. The variation of heat and mass transfer coefficients with the governing parameters such as power law index, thermal and solutal dispersion parameters, inertia parameter, buoyancy ratio, and the Lewis number is discussed for a wide range of values of these parameters.  相似文献

An analysis is made of the transient free convection from a vertical flat plate which is embedded in a fluid-saturated porous medium. It is assumed that for time a steady state temperature or velocity has been obtained in the boundary-layer which occurs due to a uniform flux dissipation rate . Then at time the heat flux on the plate is suddenly changed to and maintained at this value for 0$$ " align="middle" border="0"> . An analytical solution has been obtained for the temperature/velocity field for small times in which the transport effects are confined within an inner layer adjacent to the plate. These effects cause a new steady boundary layer. A numerical solution of the full boundary-layer equations is then obtained for the whole transient from to the steady state, firstly by means of a step-by-step method and then by a matching technique. The transition between the two distinct solution methods is always observed to occur very near to the turning point of the plate surface temperature, a time at which the fluid temperature is close to its steady state profile. The solution obtained using the step-by-step method shows excellent agreement with the small time analytical solution. Results are presented to illustrate the occurrence of transients from both small and large increases and decreases in the levels of existing energy inputs.  相似文献

The problem of natural convective heat transfer for a non-Newtonian fluid from an impermeable vertical plate embedded in a fluid-saturated porous medium has been analyzed. Non-Darcian, radiative and thermal dispersion effects have been considered in the present analysis. The governing boundary layer equations and boundary conditions are cast into a dimensionless form and simplified by using a similarity transformation. The resulting system of equations is solved by using a double shooting Runge–Kutta method. The effect of viscosity index n, the conduction–radiation parameter R, the non-Darcy parameter Gr*, the thermal dispersion parameter Ds and the suction/injection parameter fw on the fluid velocities, temperatures and the local Nusselt number are discussed.  相似文献

The natural convection boundary-layer flow on a surface embedded in a fluid-saturated porous medium is discussed in the case when the wall heat flux is related to the wall temperature through a power-law variation. The flow within the porous medium is assumed to be described by Darcy’s law and the Boussinesq approximation is assumed for the density variations. Two cases are discussed, (i) stagnation-point flow and (ii) flow along a vertical surface. The possible steady states are considered first with the governing partial equations reduced to ordinary differential equations by similarity transformations and these latter equations further transformed to previously studied free-convection problems. This identifies values of the exponent N in the power-law wall temperature variation, N = 3/2 for stagnation-point flows and 3/2 ≤ N ≤ 3 for the vertical surface, where similarity solutions do not exist. Time development for stagnation-point flows is seen to depend on N, for N <  3/2 the steady state is approached at large times, for N ≥ 3/2 a singularity develops at finite time leading to thermal runaway. Numerical solutions for the vertical surface, where the temperature-dependent boundary condition becomes more significant as the solution develops, show that, for N < 3/2, the corresponding similarity solution is approached, whereas for N >  3/2 the solution breaks down at a finite distance along the surface.  相似文献

Results of a numerical study of a laminar separated flow behind a rectangular step on a porous surface with uniform injection or suction are described. Two cases are considered: an unconfined flow past a step and flow evolution in a confined channel (duct). It is shown that mass transfer on the surface causes strong changes in the flow structure and substantially affects the position of the reattachment point, as well as friction and heat transfer. More intense injection leads first to an increase in the separation-zone length and then to its rapid vanishing due to boundary-layer displacement. Vice versa, suction at high Reynolds numbers Re s > 100 reduces the separation-zone length. The duct flow has a complicated distribution of friction and heat-transfer coefficients along the porous surface owing to the coupled effect of the transverse flow of the substance and changes in the main flow velocity due to mass transfer. __________ Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika i Tekhnicheskaya Fizika, Vol. 47, No. 1, pp. 18–28, January–February, 2006.  相似文献

An analytical study is performed on steady, laminar, and fully developed forced convection heat transfer in a parallel plate channel with asymmetric uniform heat flux boundary conditions. The channel is filled with a saturated porous medium, and the lower and upper walls are subjected to different uniform heat fluxes. The dimensionless form of the Darcy–Brinkman momentum equation is solved to determine the dimensionless velocity profile, while the dimensionless energy equation is solved to obtain temperature profile for a hydrodynamically and thermally fully developed flow in the channel. Nusselt numbers for the lower and upper walls and an overall Nusselt number are defined. Analytical expressions for determination of the Nusselt numbers and critical heat flux ratio, at which singularities are observed for individual Nusselt numbers, are obtained. Based on the values of critical heat flux ratio and Darcy number, a diagram is provided to determine the direction of heat transfer between the lower or upper walls while the fluid is flowing in the channel.  相似文献

The Darcy flow model with the Boussinesq approximation is used to investigate numerically the natural convection inside an inclined wavy cavity filled with a porous medium. Finite Element Method is used to discretize the governing differential equations with non-staggered variable arrangement. Results are presented for and , where ϕ, Ra, A and λ correspond to the cavity inclination angle, Rayleigh number, aspect ratio and surface waviness parameter, respectively. Stream and isotherm lines representing the corresponding flow and thermal fields, and local and average Nusselt numbers distribution expressing the rate of heat transfer are determined and shown on graphs and tables. A good agreement is observed between the present results and those known from the open literature. The flow and thermal structures found to be highly dependent on surface waviness for inclination angles less than 45°, especially for high Rayleigh numbers.  相似文献

This article considers the problem of mixed convection stagnation-point flow towards a vertical plate embedded in a porous medium with prescribed surface heat flux. It is assumed that the free stream velocity and the surface heat flux vary linearly from the stagnation point. Using a similarity transformation, the governing system of partial differential equations is transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations, before being solved numerically by a finite-difference method. The features of the flow and the heat transfer characteristics are analyzed and discussed. It is found that dual solutions exist for both buoyancy assisting and opposing flows.  相似文献

An adaptation of the classical Graetz methodology is applied to investigate the thermal development of forced convection in a parallel plate channel or a circular tube filled by a porous medium saturated by a rarefied gas, with walls held at constant heat flux. The Brinkman model is employed. The analysis leads to expressions for the local Nusselt number Nu as functions of the dimensionless longitudinal coordinate and the Darcy number. It is found that an increase in the velocity slip coefficient generally increases Nu by a small or moderate amount (but the circular tube at large Darcy number is an exception) while an increase in the temperature slip coefficient reduces Nu by a more substantial amount. These trends are uniform as the longitudinal coordinate varies.  相似文献

The effect of vertical heterogeneity of permeability, on the onset of convection in a horizontal layer of a saturated porous medium, uniformly heated from below but with a non-uniform basic temperature gradient resulting from transient heating or otherwise, is studied analytically using linear stability theory. Two particular situations, corresponding to instantaneous bottom heating and constant-rate bottom heating, are studied. Estimates of the timescale for the development of convection instability are obtained.  相似文献

The linear thermoconvective instability of the basic parallel flow in a plane and horizontal porous channel is investigated. The boundary walls are assumed to be impermeable and subject to symmetric and uniform heat fluxes. The wall heat fluxes produce either a net heating or a net cooling of the fluid saturated porous medium. A horizontal mass flow rate is externally impressed leading to a stationary basic state with a temperature gradient inclined to the vertical. A region of possibly unstable thermal stratification exists either in the lower half-channel (boundary heating), or in the upper half-channel (boundary cooling). The convective instability of the basic flow is governed by the Rayleigh number and by the Péclet number. In the case of boundary heating, the thermal instability arises when the Rayleigh number exceeds its critical value, that depends on the Péclet number. The change of the critical Rayleigh number as a function of the Péclet number is determined numerically for arbitrary normal modes oblique to the basic flow direction. The most dangerous modes are the longitudinal rolls, with a wave vector perpendicular to the basic velocity. There exists a minimum value of the Péclet number, 19.1971, below which no linear instability is detected.  相似文献
