We consider the problem of planning the motion of an arbitraryk-sided polygonal robotB, free to translate and rotate in a polygonal environmentV bounded byn edges. We present an algorithm that constructs a single component of the free configuration space ofB in timeO((kn) 2+ɛ), for any ɛ>0. This algorithm, combined with some standard techniques in motion planning, yields a solution to the underlying motion-planning problem, within the same running time. We consider the problem of bounding the combinatorial complexity of a single cell in an arrangement ofn low-degree algebraic surface patches in 3-space. We show that this complexity isO(n 2+ε), for any ε>0, where the constant of proportionality depends on ε and on the maximum degree of the given surfaces and of their boundaries. This extends several previous results, almost settles a 9-year-old open problem, and has applications to motion planning of general robot systems with three degrees of freedom. As a corollary of the above result, we show that the overall complexity of all the three-dimensional cells of an arrangement ofn low-degree algebraic surface patches, intersected by an additional low-degree algebraic surface patch σ (the so-calledzone of σ in the arrangement) isO(n 2+ε), for any ε>0, where the constant of proportionality depends on ε and on the maximum degree of the given surfaces and of their boundaries. We present an algorithm to compute a Euclidean minimum spanning tree of a given setS ofN points inE d in timeO(F d (N,N) log d N), whereF d (n,m) is the time required to compute a bichromatic closest pair amongn red andm green points inE d . IfF d (N,N)=Ω(N 1+ε), for some fixed ɛ>0, then the running time improves toO(F d (N,N)). Furthermore, we describe a randomized algorithm to compute a bichromatic closest pair in expected timeO((nm logn logm)2/3+m log2 n+n log2 m) inE 3, which yields anO(N 4/3 log4/3 N) expected time, algorithm for computing a Euclidean minimum spanning tree ofN points inE 3. Ind≥4 dimensions we obtain expected timeO((nm)1−1/([d/2]+1)+ε+m logn+n logm) for the bichromatic closest pair problem andO(N 2−2/([d/2]+1)ε) for the Euclidean minimum spanning tree problem, for any positive ɛ. We show that, for any collection ℋ ofn hyperplanes in ℜ4, the combinatorial complexity of thevertical decomposition of the arrangementA(ℋ) of ℋ isO(n 4 logn). We prove that for any setS ofn points in the plane andn 3−α triangles spanned by the points inS there exists a point (not necessarily inS) contained in at leastn 3−3α/(c log5 n) of the triangles. Recently, Fredman and Tarjan invented a new, especially efficient form of heap (priority queue). Their data structure, theFibonacci heap (or F-heap) supports arbitrary deletion inO(logn) amortized time and other heap operations inO(1) amortized time. In this paper we use F-heaps to obtain fast algorithms for finding minimum spanning trees in undirected and directed graphs. For an undirected graph containingn vertices andm edges, our minimum spanning tree algorithm runs inO(m logβ (m, n)) time, improved fromO((m, n)) time, whereβ(m, n)=min {i|log(i) nm/n}. Our minimum spanning tree algorithm for directed graphs runs inO(n logn + m) time, improved fromO(n log n +m log log log(m/n+2) n). The problem of triangulating a polygon using the minimum number of triangles is treated. We show that the minimum number of triangles required to partition a simplen-gon is equal ton+2wd – 2, wherew is the number of holes andd is the maximum number of independent degenerate triangles of then-gon. We also propose an algorithm for constructing the minimum triangulation of a simple hole-freen-gon. The algorithm takesO(nlog2 n+DK 2) time, whereD is the maximum number of vertices lying on the same line in then-gon andK is the number of minimally degenerate triangles of then-gon.  相似文献

We present a new algorithm for finding the triconnected components of an undirected graph. The algorithm is based on a method of searching graphs called open ear decomposition. We present a deterministic algorithm for computing the convex hull ofn points inE d in optimalO(n logn+n ⌞d/2⌟ ) time. Optimal solutions were previously known only in even dimension and in dimension 3. A by-product of our result is an algorithm for computing the Voronoi diagram ofn points ind-space in optimalO(n logn+n ⌜d/2⌝ ) time. We apply Megiddo's parametric searching technique to several geometric optimization problems and derive significantly improved solutions for them. We obtain, for any fixed ε>0, anO(n 1+ε) algorithm for computing the diameter of a point set in 3-space, anO(8/5+ε) algorithm for computing the width of such a set, and onO(n 8/5+ε) algorithm for computing the closest pair in a set ofn lines in space. We give a generalization of the hypergreedy algorithm for minimum weight perfect matching on a complete edge weighted graph whose weights satisfy the triangle inequality. We show the existence of weak ε-nets of size , whereβ 2=0,β 3=1, andβ d ≈0.149·2 d-1(d-1)!, improving a previous bound of Alonet al. Such a net can be computed effectively. We also consider two special cases: whenS is a planar point set in convex position, we prove the existence of a net of sizeO((1/ε) log1.6(1/ε)). In the case whereS consists of the vertices of a regular polygon, we use an argument from hyperbolic geometry to exhibit an optimal net of sizeO(1/ε), which improves a previous bound of Capoyleas. We provide new combinatorial bounds on the complexity of a face in an arrangement of segments in the plane. In particular, we show that the complexity of a single face in an arrangement ofn line segments determined byh endpoints isO(h logh). While the previous upper bound,O(nα(n)), is tight for segments with distinct endpoints, it is far from being optimal whenn=Ω(h 2). Our results show that, in a sense, the fundamental combinatorial complexity of a face arises not as a result of the number ofsegments, but rather as a result of the number ofendpoints. In this paper we present a fast parallel algorithm for constructing a depth first search tree for an undirected graph. The algorithm is anRNC algorithm, meaning that it is a probabilistic algorithm that runs in polylog time using a polynomial number of processors on aP-RAM. Recently, É. Tardos gave a strongly polynomial algorithm for the minimum-cost circulation problem and solved the open problem posed in 1972 by J. Edmonds and R.M. Karp. Her algorithm runs in O(m 2 T(m, n) logm) time, wherem is the number of arcs,n is the number of vertices, andT(m, n) is the time required for solving a maximum flow problem in a network withm arcs andn vertices. In the present paper, taking an approach that is a dual of Tardos's, we also give a strongly polynomial algorithm for the minimum-cost circulation problem. Our algorithm runs in O(m 2 S(m, n) logm) time and reduces the computational complexity, whereS(m, n) is the time required for solving a shortest path problem with a fixed origin in a network withm arcs,n vertices, and a nonnegative arc length function. The complexity is the same as that of Orlin's algorithm, recently developed by efficiently implementing the Edmonds-Karp scaling algorithm.  相似文献

We show how to use polynomial and strongly polynomial capacity scaling algorithms for the transshipment problem to design a polynomial dual network simplex pivot rule. Our best pivoting strategy leads to an O(m 2 logn) bound on the number of pivots, wheren andm denotes the number of nodes and arcs in the input network. We obtain near-quadratic upper bounds on the maximum combinatorial complexity of a single cell in certain arrangements ofn surfaces in 3-space where the lower bound for this quantity is Ω(n 2) or slightly larger. We prove a theorem that identifies a collection of topological and combinatorial conditions for a set of surface patches in space, which make the complexity of a single cell in an arrangement induced by these surface patches near-quadratic. We apply this result to arrangements related to motion-planning problems of two types of robot systems with three degrees of freedom and also to a special type of arrangements of triangles in space. The complexity of the entire arrangement in each case that we study can be Θ(n 3) in the worst case, and our single-cell bounds are of the formO(n 2 α(n)), O(n 2 logn), orO(n 2 α(n)logn). The only previously known similar bounds are for the considerably simpler arrangements of planes or of spheres in space, where the bounds are Θ(n) and Θ(n 2), respectively. For some of the arrangements that we study we derive near-quadratic-time algorithms to compute a single cell. We present a new network simplex pivot selection rule, which we call theminimum ratio pivot rule, and analyze the worst-case complexity of the resulting network simplex algorithm. We consider networks withn nodes,m arcs, integral arc capacities and integral supplies/demands of nodes. We define a {0, 1}-valued penalty for each arc of the network. The minimum ratio pivot rule is to select that eligible arc as the entering arc whose addition to the basis creates a cycle with the minimum cost-to-penalty ratio. We show that the so-defined primal network simplex algorithm solves minimum cost flow problem within O() pivots and in O(Δ(m + n logn)) time, whereΔ is any upper bound on the sum of all arc flows in every feasible flow. For assignment and shortest path problems, our algorithm runs in O(n 2) pivots and O(nm +n 2 logn) time.  相似文献
