The atomic structure of the β-SiC(100)-(2 × 1) surface was analyzed using dynamical calculations of low energy electron diffraction (LEED) intensities measured with a video camera. Surface composition was monitored using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). The LEED calculations utilized our recently developed automated tensor LEED method. The results indicate that the surface is terminated by a monolayer of silicon with the topmost silicon atoms forming asymmetric, buckled dimers.  相似文献

The evolution of N,N′-dimethylperylene-3,4,9,10-dicarboxyimide (Me-PTCDI) thin films formed by vapour deposition on InSb(1 1 1)A substrates has been studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). XPS studies of the Me-PTCDI covered surface indicate that no significant interaction occurs at sub-monolayer coverage when compared to multilayer Me-PTCDI films. HREELS studies suggest only a weak interaction as evidenced by very small changes in the frequencies of several molecular vibrational modes. LEED patterns show the Me-PTCDI overlayer adopts a structure commensurate with the underlying InSb(1 1 1)A substrate surface and that can be rationalised by van der Waals intermolecular energy calculations for the Me-PTCDI unit cell. The results are consistent with a weak interaction at the Me-PTCDI/InSb interface, the formation of the commensurate structure being sufficient to overcome the small energetic penalty associated with deviation from the calculated intermolecular interaction energy minimum.  相似文献

Adsorption and decomposition of triethylindium (TEI: (C2H5)3In) on a GaP(0 0 1)-(2×1) surface have been studied by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). It is found from the TPD result that ethyl radical and ethylene are evolved at about 300–400 and 450–550 K, respectively, as decomposition products of TEI on the surface. This result is quite different from that on the GaP(0 0 1)-(2×4) surface. The activation energy of desorption of ethyl radical is estimated to be about 93 kJ/mol. It is suggested that TEI is adsorbed molecularly on the surface at 100 K and that some of TEI molecules are dissociated into C2H5 to form P–C2H5 bonds at 300 K. The vibration modes related to ethyl group are decreased in intensity at about 300–400 and 450–550 K, which is consistent with the TPD result. The TEI molecules (including mono- and di-ethylindium) are not evolved from the surface. Based on the TPD and HREELS results, the decomposition mechanism of TEI on the GaP(0 0 1)-(2×1) surface is discussed and compared with that on the (2×4) surface.  相似文献

This study first reports the initial growth stages of sodium chloride (NaCl) on Ag(1 1 0) at room temperature. NaCl grows in bi-layer mode along its [1 0 0] axis and gives rise to (4 × 1) and (1 × 2) reconstructed domains for coverages lower than two monolayers (ML), a minimal thickness inducing a bi-dimensional closed film. In addition, a 10 ML NaCl film has been examined by low energy electron diffraction (LEED). LEED analysis leads to the dissociation of the NaCl deposit in a few minutes. The NaCl dissociation implies Cl desorption from the surface and Na remaining on it. The residual Na is arranged in the form of a (2 × 1) surface reconstruction and is found to be strongly bounded to the Ag substrate. These findings have been established by using the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy technique.  相似文献

The structure and dynamics of the CaF2(1 1 1) surface were investigated by means of low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations at 300 K. LEED beam intensities were recorded as a function of electron energy and were analyzed with the tensor LEED approach. Positions as well as mean square amplitudes of the ions in the first layers were fitted to the experimental I(E) curves. According to both LEED and MD, the CaF2(1 1 1) surface structure is similar to the bulk-terminated structure with only small relaxation of the outermost ions. Moreover, both methods show an enhancement of vibrational amplitudes in the outermost F-Ca-F triple layer.  相似文献

The initial growth of Pt on the Ni(1 1 0)-(3 × 1)-O and NiO(1 1 0) surfaces has been studied by coaxial impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy (CAICISS), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Prior to Pt deposition, the atomic structure of the near-surface regions of the Ni(1 1 0)-(3 × 1)-O and NiO(1 1 0) structures were studied using CAICISS, finding changes to the interlayer spacings due to the adsorption of oxygen. Deposition of Pt on the Ni(1 1 0)-(3 × 1)-O surface led to a random substitutional alloy in the near-surface region at Pt coverages both below and in excess of 1 ML. In contrast, when the surface was treated with 1800 L of atomic oxygen in order to form a NiO(1 1 0) surface, a thin Pt layer was formed upon room temperature Pt deposition. XPS and LEED data are presented throughout to support the CAICISS observations.  相似文献

The modification of the Au(1 1 1) Shockley-type surface state by an adsorbed monolayer of large π-conjugated molecules was investigated by high-resolution angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). We determined binding energy, band mass, and Rashba-splitting and discuss the results in the context of rare-gas adsorption on noble metals. This comparison allows the determination of the bonding strength of the adsorbates, found to be physisorptive with derived binding energies per molecule of 2.0 eV for perylene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride (PTCDA) and 1.5 eV for naphtalene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride (NTCDA). We will also present a superstructure model for the NTCDA/Au(1 1 1) system, deduced from low energy electron diffraction images (LEED) in combination with substrate band-backfolding.  相似文献

We have studied the adsorption structure of acetic anhydride on a TiO2(1 1 0) surface using XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), LEED (low energy electron diffraction) and HREELS (high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy) to determine the origins of the unique adsorption properties of carboxylic acids on a TiO2(1 1 0) surface. The C 1s XPS data indicated that the saturation carbon amount of adsorbed acetic anhydride was 12 ± 3% larger than that of the adsorbed acetic acid. LEED showed p(2 × 1) weak spots for the acetic anhydride adsorbed surface. The HREELS spectra revealed the dissociative adsorption of acetic anhydride. Based on these findings, we concluded that the neutralization of the bridging oxygen atoms associated with the dissociative adsorption is necessary for the stable adsorption of carboxylates on the 5-fold Ti sites.  相似文献

Ultra-thin palladium films deposited on the Ni(1 1 1) surface were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and X-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD). For low coverage, LEED shows a (1 × 1) pattern similar to that of the substrate. For intermediate coverage, the LEED pattern displays extra spots around the main (1 × 1) spots, resembling a Moiré coincidence pattern, probably associated with the formation of Pd bi-dimensional islands oriented in different directions on the Ni(1 1 1) surface. The results obtained by XPS and XPD corroborate this finding. The LEED pattern displays this structure up to 500 °C. Annealing at 650 °C brings back the (1 × 1) pattern, which is associated with a Pd island coalescence and alloy formation by Pd diffusion in the first atomic layers of the Ni(1 1 1). In this paper we present a detailed study of this surface structure via a comparison between XPD experiment and theory.  相似文献

Adsorption of CO on a Pd monolayer (ML) supported on Mo(110) has been studied using low energy electron diffraction (LEED), temperature programmed desorption (TPD), and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). Three ordered CO substructures denoted as are observed with LEED. The binding energy of C0 on the 1.0 ML Pd/Mo(110) surface is reduced by 12 kcal/mol relative to the Pd(111) surface, consistent with previous results for supported palladium monolayers on other substrates. Two vibrational states of C0 are observed near 1950 and 2050 cm−1, with the feature at the lower wavenumber having the smaller binding energy.  相似文献

Low energy electron diffraction (LEED) patterns for the GeSi(111)-5 × 5 surface are reported and compared to those for the Si(111)-7 × 7 surface. Parallels between the observed LEED patterns are explained by a structural analogy between GeSi(111)-5 × 5 and Si(111)-7 × 7 surfaces. Both the (5 × 5) and (7 × 7) patterns are shown to be consistent with structural models of the triangle-dimer type previously proposed for Si(111)-7 × 7 surface.  相似文献

The c(4 × 2) structures in (0 0 1) surfaces of Si and Ge have been studied by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). Using a proper cleaning method for the Si surface, we were able to observe clear c(4 × 2) LEED patterns up to incident energy of ∼400 eV as well as the Ge surface. Extensive experimental intensity-voltage curves allowed us to optimize the asymmetric dimer model up to the eighth layer (including the dimer layer) in depth in the dynamical LEED calculation. Optimized structural parameters are almost the same for the Si and Ge except for the height of the buckled-up atom of the asymmetric dimer. For the Ge surface, the structural parameters are in excellent agreement with those obtained by a previous theoretical calculation. The tilt angle and bond length of the dimer are 18 ± 1 (19 ± 1)° and 2.4 ± 0.1 (2.5 ± 0.1) Å for the Si(0 0 1) (Ge(0 0 1)), respectively.  相似文献

The TiO2(110)-(1 × 1) surface and its reconstruction as a (1 × 2) form have been studied with low energy electron diffraction (LEED), electron stimulated desorption ion angular distribution (ESDIAD) and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). Oxygen ion desorption occurs within a lobe perpendicular to the (1 × 1) surface, changing to two off-normal lobes for the (1 × 2) reconstruction. This transformation in the ESDIAD pattern is consistent with the added Ti2O3 row model of the (1 × 2) reconstruction proposed by Onishi and Iwasawa. STM studies of the stoichiometric and electron irradiated surfaces reinforce the association of the O+ ESD contribution with majority sites at the surface. Adsorption of acetic acid on the (1 × 1) surface produces a (2 × 1) overlayed and induces a reconstruction of the underlying substrate. ESDIAD reveals H+ ions emitted off-normally from dissociatively adsorbed acetate, and along the surface normal from surface hydroxyls. Adsorption of acetic acid on the (1 × 2) surface does not modify the LEED pattern, but ESDIAD reveals H+ desorption with a weaker off-normal contribution consistent with the Ti2O3 model of the reconstruction.  相似文献

The growth of thin subnanometric silicon films on TiO2 (1 1 0)-(1 × 2) reconstructed surfaces at room temperature (RT) has been studied in situ by X-ray and ultra-violet photoelectron spectroscopies (XPS and UPS), Auger electron and electron-energy-loss spectroscopies (AES and ELS), quantitative low energy electron diffraction (LEED-IV), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). For Si coverage up to one monolayer, a heterogeneous layer is formed. Its composition consists of a mixture of different suboxides SiOx (1 < x ? 2) on top of a further reduced TiO2 surface. Upon Si coverage, the characteristic (1 × 2) LEED pattern from the substrate is completely attenuated, indicating absence of long-range order. Annealing the SiOx overlayer results in the formation of suboxides with different stoichiometry. The LEED pattern recovers the characteristic TiO2 (1 1 0)-(1 × 2) diagram. LEED I-V curves from both, substrate and overlayer, indicate the formation of nanometric sized SiOx clusters.  相似文献

LEED analysis of the laser annealed Si(1 1 1)-(1 × 1) surface shows that a model with a graphite-like top double layer of atoms with a spacing of 2.95±0.02 Å from the second double layer describes the LEED data as well as the Zehner model, but involves large displacements of the atoms normal to the surface as required by ion scattering results. It is suggested that this model provides a natural interpretation of the low energy He atom scattering data for the Si(1 1 1)-(7 × 7) surface.  相似文献

The structure of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) on Pd(1 1 1) was studied with low energy electron diffraction (LEED), photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). h-BN forms flat monolayers on the Pd(1 1 1) surface in contrast to Rh(1 1 1) where a complex self-assembled double layer structure, the nanomesh [M. Corso, W. Auwärter, M. Muntwiler, A. Tamai, T. Greber, J. Osterwalder, Science 303 (2004) 217], appears. The LEED patterns reveal a dominating 10 × 10 h-BN superstructure, with a second, distinct structure rotated by 30° and further azimuthally randomly oriented h-BN overlayers. This is consistent with STM images which show several different Moiré patterns associated with different rotation angles of the overlayer. Additionally the use of thin Pd(1 1 1) films instead of single crystal substrates was studied. No significant differences in the h-BN film quality were found.  相似文献

Clean and oxidized surfaces of CoAl(1 0 0) were investigated by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS), and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). The regrowth or step flow of terraces was observed at 1150 K. The correlation between the growth of oxide and the step flow on the CoAl(1 0 0) surface is discussed in this paper.  相似文献

The reconstructed anatase TiO2(001) surface has been investigated by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and angle-resolved mass spectroscopy of recoiled ions (AR-MSRI). Prior investigations have observed or considered only a (1x1) unreconstructed termination for this surface with no detailed structural analysis. Our LEED results indicate a previously unobserved two-domain (1x4) reconstruction after sputtering and annealing the (1x1) surface. The XPS data for this reconstruction indicate the presence of only Ti4+. Simulations of the AR-MSRI experimental data indicate a best fit for a microfaceted surface, revealing both (103) and (1;03) surface planes.  相似文献

Results for deposition and thermal annealing of gallium on the Si(1 0 0)-(2 × 1) surface achieved by synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy (SR-PES) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) are presented. In addition to deposition of Ga on a clean surface, the influence of water adsorption on the arrangement of gallium atoms was also studied. The results on Ga deposition at a higher temperature (490 °C) are consistent with a Ga ad-dimer model showing equivalent bond arrangement of all Ga atoms for coverages up to 0.5 ML. The deposition onto a surface with adsorbed water at room temperature led to a disordered gallium growth. In this case gallium atoms bind to silicon dimers already binding fragments of adsorbed water. A subsequent annealing of these layers leads to a surface structure similar to the Ga-(2 × 2), however, it is less ordered, probably due to the presence of silicon oxides formed from water fragments.  相似文献

Growth and surface morphology of epitaxial Fe(1 1 0)/MgO(1 1 1)/Fe(1 1 0) trilayers constituting a magnetic tunnel junction were investigated by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). STM reveals a grain-like growth mode of MgO on Fe(1 1 0) resulting in dense MgO(1 1 1) films at room temperature as well as at 250 °C. As observed by STM, initial deposition of MgO leads to a partial oxidation of the Fe(1 1 0) surface which is confirmed by Auger electron spectroscopy. The top Fe layer deposited on MgO(1 1 1) at room temperature is relatively rough consisting of clusters which can be transformed by annealing to an atomically flat epitaxial Fe(1 1 0) film.  相似文献
