We generalize the Atiyah-Segal completion theorem to C *-algebras as follows. Let A be a C *-algebra with a continuous action of the compact Lie group G. If K * G (A) is finitely generated as an R(G)-module, or under other suitable restrictions, then the I(G)-adic completion K * G (A) is isomorphic to RK *([A C(EG)]G), where RK * is representable K-theory for - C *-algebras and EG is a classifying space for G. As a corollary, we show that if and are homotopic actions of G, and if K *(C * (G,A,)) and K *(C * (G,A,)) are finitely generated, then K *(C *(G,A,))K*(C * (G,A,)). We give examples to show that this isomorphism fails without the completions. However, we prove that this isomorphism does hold without the completions if the homotopy is required to be norm continuous.This work was partially supported by an NSF Graduate Fellowship and by an NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship.  相似文献

We give an explicit index map for any properly infinite closed ideal of a Rickart C *-algebra. This generalizes Olsen's work on von Neumann algebras. We use our results to compute the topological and the algebraic K 1-groups of any quotient algebra of a Rickart C *-algebra.  相似文献

Let A be a separable nuclear C + algebra with unit. Let be a closed two-sided ideal in A. A relative K homology group K 0(A,) is defined. Closely related are topological definitions of properly supported K homology and of compactly supported relative K homology. We define united KK-theory for real C*-algebras A and B such that A is separable and B is -unital, extending united K-theory in the sense that KKCRT( , B) = KCRT(B). United KK-theory combines real, complex, and self-conjugate KK-theory; but unlike unaugmented KK-theory for real C*-algebras, it admits a Universal Coefficient Theorem. For all separable A and B in which the complexification of A is in the bootstrap category, KKCRT(A,B) appears as the middle term of a short exact sequence whose outer terms involve the united K-theory of A and B. We associate to any length function L on a group a space of rapidly decreasing functions on (in the l 2 sense), denoted by H L (). When H L () is contained in the reduced C*-algebra C r * () of (), then it is a dense *-subalgebra of C r * () and we prove a theorem of A. Connes which asserts that under this hypothesis H L () has the same K-theory as C r * (). Motivated by two norm equations used to characterize the Friedrichs angle, this paper studies C*-isomorphisms associated with two projections by introducing the matched triple and the semi-harmonious pair of projections. A triple (P, Q, H) is said to be matched if H is a Hilbert C*-module, P and Q are projections on H such that their infimum P ∧ Q exists as an element of L(H), where L(H) denotes the set of all adjointable operators on H. The C*-subalgebras of L(H) generated by elements in {P - P ∧ Q, Q - P ∧ Q, I} and {P, Q, P ∧ Q, I} are denoted by i(P, Q, H) and o(P, Q, H), respectively. It is proved that each faithful representation (π, X) of o(P, Q, H) can induce a faithful representation (π, X e) of i(P, Q, H) such that e π(P - P ∧ Q) = π(P) - π(P) ∧ π(Q),eπ(Q - P ∧ Q) = π(Q) - π(P) ∧ π(Q).When (P, Q) is semi-harmonious, that is, R(P + Q) and R(2I - P - Q) are both orthogonally complemented in H, it is shown that i(P, Q, H) and i(I - Q, I - P, H) are unitarily equivalent via a unitary operator in L(H). A counterexample is constructed, which shows that the same may be not true when (P, Q) fails to be semi-harmonious. Likewise, a counterexample is constructed such that (P, Q) is semi-harmonious, whereas (P, I - Q) is not semi-harmonious. Some additional examples indicating new phenomena of adjointable operators acting on Hilbert C*-modules are also provided.  相似文献

In this paper, from the Newton filtration’s point of view, we construct the singular Riemannian metric and use the method in singular theory to study the bifurcation problems, and give the sufficient condition of d-determination of bifurcation problems with respect to C 0 contact equivalence. We show that, given a positive homomorphism Hom(K *(C(X)), K *(A)) with [1 C(X)][1 A ], where A is a unital separable simple C *-algebra with real rank zero, stable rank one and weakly unperforated K 0(A), there exists a homomorphism h: C(X)A such that h induces . We show that the homotopy groups of the group of quasi-unitaries inC *-algebras form a homology theory on the category of allC *-algebras which becomes topologicalK-theory when stabilized. We use a Heegaard splitting of the topological 3-sphere as a guiding principle to construct a family of its noncommutative deformations. The main technical point is an identification of the universal C*-algebras defining our quantum 3-spheres with an appropriate fiber product of crossed-product C*-algebras. Then we employ this result to show that the K-groups of our family of noncommutative 3-spheres coincide with their classical counterparts. We will study some permanence properties of C*-unique groups in details. In particular, normal subgroups and extensions will be considered. Among other interesting results, we prove that every second countable amenable group with an injective finite-dimensional representation (not necessarily unitary) is a retract of a C*-unique group. We compute the K-theory groups of the reduced C*-algebra C r * () of a one-relator group . We prove that every such group is K-amenable in the sense of Cuntz. For a torsion-free one-relator group =<X|r> such that r is not a product of commutators, we give a direct proof of the fact that the Baum–Connes analytical assembly map
is an isomorphism. From recent results of Oyono and Tu, we deduce that the Baum–Connes conjecture with coefficients holds for any one-relator group, as well as for fundamental groups of Haken 3-manifolds (e.g. for all knot groups). In particular, if is a torsionfree group in one of these classes, then C r * () has no nontrivial idempotent.  相似文献
