Photoluminescence (PL) from purified (>90%) double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWNTs), which have been synthesized by zeolite catalyst-supported chemical vapor deposition (zeolite-CCVD), of very small diameters (0.8-nm average inner tube) is reported. The PL contour mappings for various ratios (1-90%) of double- versus single-wall carbon nanotubes by thermal oxidation have enabled us to unambiguously identify the chirality of inner tubes for the DWNTs synthesized. After the extensive high-temperature oxidation at 700 degrees C, high-purity (>90%) DWNTs of approximately 0.8 nm inner diameter are obtained, and most of these correspond to the DWNTs having inner tubes with chiralities of (7,5), (7,6), and (9,4).  相似文献

Double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) have been synthesized by catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD) over supported metal catalysts decomposed from Fe(CH3COO)2 and Co(CH3COO)2 on mesoporous silica. Bundles of tubes with relatively high percentage of DWNTs, in areas where tubular layered structures could be clearly resolved, have been observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In other areas, crystal-like alignment of very uniform DWNTs was observed for the first time, suggesting that mesoporous silica might play a templating role in guiding the initial nanotube growth. In addition, compatible with nano-electronics research, bridging of catalytic islands by DWNTs has also been demonstrated.  相似文献

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) have been functionalized through the wet-mechanochemical reaction method. Results from the infrared spectrum and zeta potential measurements show that the hydroxyl groups have been introduced onto the treated SWNT and DWNT surfaces. Transmission electron microscope observations revealed that the SWNTs and DWNTs were cut short after being milled. SWNTs and DWNTs with optimized aspect ratio can be obtained by adjusting the ball milling parameters. Thermal conductivity enhancement of water-based nanofluids containing treated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) shows augmentation with the increase of temperature mainly due to the effects of an ordering liquid layer forming around the chemical surfaces of CNTs. Moreover, the thicker interfacial layer of water molecules on the surfaces of CNTs with smaller diameter, such as SWNTs, is in favor of greater thermal conductivity enhancement compared with the thinner one on the surfaces of DWNTs or MWNTs with larger diameter.  相似文献

Double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) have been selectively synthesized over Fe/Co loaded mesoporous silica by catalytic chemical vapor deposition of alcohol. Several silica materials with desired pore diameter and morphology have been investigated for the DWNT growth. The diameter distribution and selectivity of the DWNT are found to depend on the reaction temperature, pore size, and thermal stability of the support material. A high-yield synthesis of DWNTs has been achieved at 900 degrees C over high-temperature stable mesoporous silica. The outer diameter of DWNTs is found to be in the range of 1.5-5.4 nm with a "d" spacing of 0.38 +/- 0.02 nm between inner and outer layers, which is much larger than those of multiwall carbon nanotubes.  相似文献

This study develops a technique for enhancing the electrical conductivity and optical transmittance of transparent double-walled carbon nanotube (DWNT) film. Silver nanoparticles were modified with a NH(2)(CH(2))(2)SH self-assembled monolayer terminated by amino groups and subsequent surface condensation that reacted with functionalized DWNTs. Ag nanoparticles were grafted on the surface of the DWNTs. The low sheet resistance of the resulting thin conductive film on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate was due to the increased contact areas between DWNTs and work function by grafting Ag nanoparticles on the DWNT surfaces. Increasing the contact area between DWNTs and work function improved the conductivity of the DWNT-Ag thin films. The prepared DWNT-Ag thin films had a sheet resistance of 53.4 Ω/sq with 90.5% optical transmittance at a 550 nm wavelength. After treatment with HNO(3) and annealing at 150 °C for 30 min, a lower sheet resistance of 45.8 Ω/sq and a higher transmittance of 90.4% could be attained. The value of the DC conductivity to optical conductivity (σ(DC)/σ(OP)) ratio is 121.3.  相似文献

The capacitive behaviors of high-purity double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) were investigated before and after oxidation using nitric acid (HNO3). The electrodes prepared from the HNO3-oxidized DWNTs have exhibited higher capacitances than the pristine nanotube electrode in both aqueous and non-aqueous systems, despite the deterioration of their specific surface area after HNO3 oxidation. The superiority of the HNO3-oxidized DWNTs in capacitance properties is caused by the variations of surface wettability and the interstitial pore structure of nanotube bundles, which result from the introduction of polar oxygen functional groups onto the nanotube surface by HNO3 oxidation.  相似文献

Aligned double-walled carbon nanotube (DWNT) long ropes with a narrow diameter distribution were directly synthesized by sulfur-assisted floating catalytic decomposition of methane. The DWNT ropes are typically up to several centimeters in length and possess good alignment and high purity. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images and resonant Raman spectra revealed that the outer and inner tube diameters of the DWNTs are narrowly distributed in the range of 1.7-2.0 and 1.0-1.3 nm, respectively. Moreover, based on the resonant Raman measurements, the electronic properties of the two constituent tubes of the DWNTs were identified. The successful synthesis of such DWNTs opens the possibility for their fundamental studies and further applications as nanomechanical, nanooptical, and nanoelectronic devices.  相似文献

Bimetallic tubular nanostructures have been the focus of intensive research as they have very interesting potential applications in various fields including catalysis and electronics. In this paper, we demonstrate a facile method for the fabrication of Au–Pt double‐walled nanotubes (Au–Pt DWNTs). The DWNTs are fabricated through the galvanic displacement reaction between Ag nanowires and various metal ions, and the Au–Pt DWNT catalysts exhibit high active catalytic performances toward both methanol electro‐oxidation and 4‐nitrophenol (4‐NP) reduction. First, they have a high electrochemically active surface area of 61.66 m2 g?1, which is close to the value of commercial Pt/C catalysts (64.76 m2 g?1), and the peak current density of Au–Pt DWNTs in methanol oxidation is recorded as 138.25 mA mg?1, whereas those of Pt nanotubes, Au/Pt nanotubes (simple mixture), and commercial Pt/C are 24.12, 40.95, and120.65 mA mg?1, respectively. The Au–Pt DWNTs show a markedly enhanced electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation compared with the other three catalysts. They also show an excellent catalytic performance in comparison with common Au nanotubes for 4‐nitrophenol (4‐NP) reduction. The attractive performance exhibited by these prepared Au–Pt DWNTs can be attributed to their unique structures, which make them promising candidates as high‐performance catalysts.  相似文献

Pt-Ru supported on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (single-walled nanotubes, double-walled nanotubes (DWNTs), and multi-walled nanotubes) catalysts are prepared by an ethylene glycol reduction method. Pt-Ru nanoparticles with a diameter of 2-3 nm and narrow particle size distributions are uniformly deposited onto the CNTs. A simple and fast filtration method followed by a hot-press film transfer is employed to prepare the anode catalyst layer on a Nafion membrane. The Pt-Ru/DWNTs catalyst shows the highest specific activity for methanol oxidation reaction in rotating disk electrode experiments and the highest performance as an anode catalyst in direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) single cell tests. The DMFC single cell with Pt-Ru/DWNTs (50 wt %, 0.34 mg Pt-Ru/cm(2)) produces a 68% enhancement of power density, and at the same time, an 83% reduction of Pt-Ru electrode loading when compared to Pt-Ru/C (40 wt %, 2.0 mg Pt-Ru/cm(2)).  相似文献

First‐principles calculations of the atomic and electronic structure of double‐wall nanotubes (DWNTs) of α‐V2O5 are performed. Relaxation of the DWNT structure leads to the formation of two types of local regions: 1) bulk‐type regions and 2) puckering regions. Calculated total density of states (DOS) of DWNTs considerably differ from that of single‐wall nanotubes and the single layer, as well as from the DOS of the bulk and double layer. Small shoulders that appear on edges of valence and conduction bands result in a considerable decrease in the band gaps of the DWNTs (up to 1 eV relative to the single‐layer gaps). The main reason for this effect is the shift of the inner‐ and outer‐wall DOS in opposite directions on the energetic scale. The electron density corresponding to shoulders at the conduction‐band edges is localized on vanadium atoms of the bulk‐type regions, whereas the electron density corresponding to shoulders at the valence‐band edges belongs to oxygen atoms of both regions.  相似文献

Combining experimental knowledge with molecular simulations, we investigated the adsorption and separation properties of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) against flue/synthetic gas mixture components (e.g. CO(2), CO, N(2), H(2), O(2), and CH(4)) at 300 K. Except molecular H(2), all studied nonpolar adsorbates assemble into single-file chain structures inside DWNTs at operating pressures below 1 MPa. Molecular wires of adsorbed molecules are stabilized by the strong solid-fluid potential generated from the cylindrical carbon walls. CO(2) assembly is formed at very low operating pressures in comparison to all other studied nonpolar adsorbates. The adsorption lock-and-key mechanism results from perfect fitting of rod-shaped CO(2) molecules into the cylindrical carbon pores. The enthalpy of CO(2) adsorption in DWNTs is very high and reaches 50 kJ mol(-1) at 300 K and low pore concentrations. In contrast, adsorption enthalpy at zero coverage is significantly lower for all other studied nonpolar adsorbates, for instance: 35 kJ mol(-1) for CH(4), and 14 kJ mol(-1) for H(2). Applying the ideal adsorption solution theory, we predicted that the internal pores of DWNTs have unusual ability to differentiate CO(2) molecules from other flue/synthetic gas mixture components (e.g. CO, N(2), H(2), O(2), and CH(4)) at ambient operating conditions. Computed equilibrium selectivity for equimolar CO(2)-X binary mixtures (where X: CO, N(2), H(2), O(2), and CH(4)) is very high at low mixture pressures. With an increase in binary mixture pressure, we predicted a decrease in equilibrium separation factor because of the competitive adsorption of the X binary mixture component. We showed that at 300 K and equimolar mixture pressures up to 1 MPa, the CO(2)-X equilibrium separation factor is higher than 10 for all studied binary mixtures, indicating strong preference for CO(2) adsorption. The overall selective properties of DWNTs seem to be superior, which may be beneficial for potential industrial applications of these novel carbon nanostructures.  相似文献

We report the synthesis and characterization for the first examples of monolithic low-density carbon aerogel (CA) nanocomposites containing double-walled carbon nanotubes. The CA nancomposites were prepared by the sol-gel polymerization of resorcinol and formaldehyde in an aqueous surfactant-stabilized suspension of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs). The composite hydrogels were then dried with supercritical CO 2 and subsequently carbonized under an inert atmosphere to yield monolithic CA structures containing uniform dispersions of DWNTs. The microstructures and electrical conductivities of these CA nanocomposites were evaluated for different DWNT loadings. These materials exhibited high BET surface areas (>500 m (2)/g) and enhanced electrical conductivities relative to pristine CAs. The details of these results are discussed in comparison with theory and literature.  相似文献

A great deal of attention has been focused on exploiting novel methods to fabricate thin carbonaceous capsules from multiple components for advanced materials. A layer-by-layer (LbL) method is therefore being introduced to synthesize thin and multi-carbon nanotube (CNT)-based hollow capsules from CNT complexes with cationic or anionic complementarily functionalized beta-1,3-glucans as building-blocks. These ionic beta-1,3-glucans wrap around single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) to form water-soluble complexes with ionic groups on their exterior surface. Alternate self-assembly of these CNT complexes on the silica particles is demonstrated in solution by electrostatic interactions. The LbL adsorption processes were carefully monitored by zeta-potential measurements, frequency shifts of a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and electron micrographs. Silica particles were then dissolved away by HF acid to obtain CNT-based hollow capsules composed of SWNTs and DWNTs. We believe that these novel surface adsorption methods are useful for potential design of CNT-based advanced functional materials.  相似文献

Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy was demonstrated to deliver detailed local structure and chemical composition of a complicated system with titania nanoparticles dispersed inside and outside the double-walled carbon nanotube (DWNT) channels. Areas with inhomogeneous distribution of titania and the associated water were particularly investigated at the C K-edge, Ti L-edge, and O K-edge. The results show that titania nanoparticles located inside DWNTs are present as amorphous, while those unsuccessfully introduced into the channels behave more like bulk materials in forms of anatase and rutile. Strong interaction was detected between the confined titania and DWNTs, as evidenced by up to 0.6 eV energy shift at the Ti L-edge. Strong hydration was observed for the as-prepared samples. Functionalization due to reduction and oxidation between titania and carbon layer is observed upon heat-treatment. This detailed structural information of specific areas cannot be provided by other techniques such as HRTEM, XRD, and XANES.  相似文献

The effect of layered silicate nanoclays, nano-silica and double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) on the thermal stability and fire reaction properties of two aerospace grade epoxy resins (a high temperature curing tetra-functional and a low temperature curing bi-functional resin) has been investigated using thermal analysis, cone calorimetry, LOI and UL-94 techniques. The morphology of the polymer-clay nanocomposites, determined by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy indicated intercalated structures. The addition of nanoclays (5-wt%) to both resins had a thermal destabilisation effect in the low temperature regime (<400 °C), but led to higher char yield at higher temperatures. The inclusion of nano-silica at 30-wt% significantly improved the thermal stability of the resins while DWNTs had an adverse effect due to their poor dispersion in the matrix. The nanoclays and carbon nanotubes significantly increased the fire resistance of the tetra-functional epoxy resin while a minimal effect was observed for the bi-functional resin.  相似文献

An understanding of the growth mechanism of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is very important for the control of their structures, which in turn will be the basis for their further theoretical studies and applications. On the basis of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy observations of the initial nucleation of CNTs, the following deductions are made: (1) the nucleation of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) starts at a low-temperature zone in front of the reaction zone; (2) the addition of sulfur results in localized liquid zones on the surface of big catalyst particles as the initial nucleation sites; (3) a temperature gradient is necessary to realize the role of sulfur in the structure of CNTs; and (4) the shell number of CNTs can be changed at the nucleation and growth stages. On the basis of the above, a growth model for the formation of SWNTs and DWNTs is proposed, which might open up the possibility of controlling the structure of CNTs.  相似文献

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with a narrow diameter distribution are synthesized by thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of methane over Fe/MgO catalyst on the basis of parametric study considering Fe loading, reaction temperature and time, methane concentration, and structure of a support material. We found that the porous MgO support gives the SWNTs with a narrow diameter distribution with the mean diameter and standard deviation of 0.93 and 0.06 nm, respectively, only when the Fe loading and reaction temperature are relatively low. The higher Fe loading and/or the higher reaction temperature enlarged the nanotube diameter, forming double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) in addition to SWNTs. This result indicates that only the diameter of Fe nanoparticles determines the growth of either SWNTs or DWNTs on the MgO support. The fluorescence and absorption spectra of the nanotube dispersion in D(2)O solution with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were studied to identify their chirality distribution. The fluorescence of the uniform-diameter SWNTs indicates the formation of the near armchair structures. On the other hand, the SWNTs synthesized over the catalyst with a high Fe loading, 3 wt %, showed a wide chirality distribution including the near zigzag structure. The synthesis of the SWNTs with a narrow diameter distribution could be applied to the selection of SWNTs with a specific chirality based on postsynthesis separation.  相似文献
