A constitutive model for a high lead solder

High lead solders have been widely used in chip scale packaging. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the various properties, such as Young's moduli, creep, plasticity, cyclic hardening and softening, fatigue, of a typical high lead solder, 96.5Pb-3.5Sn. Based on these studies, a unified creep and plasticity approach, incorporating damage, is adopted to construct a three-dimensional constitutive model for this solder. The model is then used to simulate cyclic hardening and softening behavior, isothermal and nonisothermal loading, and damage during the fatigue process. Experimental results from uniaxial tension tests are used to verify the model and good agreement has been achieved

Forecasting the future of information technology: how to make research investment more cost-effective?

This article presents the results of a forecasting project funded by the European Community on the evolution of the technologies and its impact on society in the coming decade. The project requires the development of a methodology to assess the potential impact of technology evolution and provides a tool for decision makers to prioritize the allocation of research investments. A brief outline of some of the technology trajectories identified and possible technology disruptions are given.     

Removing shortcomings of linear molecules to develop high efficiencies deep-blue organic electroluminescent materials

By using molecular twisting and bulky side group substitution, we successfully develop two deep-blue emitters, BiPI-1 and BiPI-2. These two twisted linear molecules retain the excellent photophysical and electrical properties of planar analogue and remarkably supress redshifts in solid state emission. Especially, BiPI-1 showed deep-blue emission in both solution and solid phase, and high carrier mobilities with μ_h > 10⁻³ cm² V⁻¹ s⁻¹ and μ_e > 10⁻⁵ cm² V⁻¹ s⁻¹. Standard blue electroluminescence (color purity: (0.15, 0.08)) and high device efficiency (CE: 4.62 cd A⁻¹, EQE: 6.18%) were observed in a non-doped OLED of BiPI-1.     

Designing a very high output resistance current source for medical applications

A new technique is proposed for the design of a current source, in bipolar technology, with a very high output resistance and low output capacitance. Such a technique is useful in electrical impedance tomography applications. The DC relationships of the basic topology are established. Then, based on the analysis of a simplified equivalent circuit, an expression is formulated for the output resistance and tested against simulation results for both ideal and practical biasing circuits. The effect of circuit capacitances, and in particular, the role of the collector-base capacitance of the output transistor, in determining the output impedance as a function of frequency is considered. Finally, a new circuit is shown to have an incremental output resistance exceeding 200?GΩ.

International high technology cooperation: lessons learned

In February 1986, in response to the Nunn Amendment in the United States, a special Conference of National Armaments Directors (CNAD) examined possible ways to foster cooperative high technology research and development programs within the NATO Alliance. As a result, they established the Special Working Group on Ada Programming Support Environments (SWG APSE) to oversee the development of a multinational software development environment for developing real-time weapon systems in the Ada programming language. The Working Group also developed a requirements specification for a software development environment interface standard. The author describes the benefits and pitfalls of this joint software development. He also describes the lessons learned from such joint multinational development efforts. Further, the author describes the management issues that are unique to such an international collaborative effort and gives a frank assessment of the techniques that had helped and hindered the program's progress     

How to lead a self-managing team

This work discusses the teams that are basically left to run themselves can be highly efficient and productive. To be successful, though, such autonomous groups require a specific type of external leadership. To get work done, many companies organize employees into self-managing teams that are basically left to run themselves with some guidance from an external leader. In fact, comprehensive surveys report that 79% of companies in the fortune 1000 and 81% of manufacturing organizations currently deploy such "empowered", "self-directed" or "autonomous" teams. Because of their widespread use, much research has been devoted to understanding how best to set up self-managing teams to maximize their productivity and effectiveness. Interestingly, though, relatively little attention has been paid to the leaders who must oversee such working groups.     

Designing a CORBA-based high performance open programmablesignaling system for ATM switching platforms

ATM switching platforms are well suited for transporting multimedia streams with quality-of-service (QOS) requirements. This paper describes the system design of a high performance connection management system for xbind, a flexible open programmable signaling system for ATM switching platforms. The latency and throughput of call processing is improved by caching, message aggregation, and processing of requests in parallel. Using a set of general purpose UNIX work stations, we are able to attain a maximum throughput of close to 600000 call operations/h (setup and delete) with an average call setup time of 85 ms. With a low traffic load of 3600 call operations/h, an average call setup latency of 11 ms can be obtained. The system is adaptive. By adjusting various control parameters, the connection manager(s) can be dynamically configured to trade off between throughput and call setup time
