Synthesis and characterization of thermoresponsive hydrogels cross-linked with chitosan

Hydrogels composed of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) and acrylic acid (AAc) were prepared by redox polymerization with degradable chitosan cross-linkers. Chitosan degradable cross-linkers were synthesized by the acrylation of the amine groups of glucosamine units within chitosan and characterized with ¹H NMR. With the chitosan cross-linkers, loosely cross-linked poly(N-isopropylacryamideco-acrylic acid) [P(NIPAAm-co-AAc)] hydrogels were prepared, and their phase transition behavior, lower critical solution temperature (LCST), water content and degradation properties were investigated. The chitosan cross-linked P(NIPAAm-co-AAc) hydrogels were pliable and transparent at room temperature. The LCST could be adjusted at 32∼39°C by alternating the feed ratio. Swelling was influenced by NIPAAm/AAc monomer ratio, cross-linking density, swelling media, and temperature. All hydrogels with different feeding ratios contained more than 95% water at 25°C in the ultra pure water and phosphate-buffered saline (PBS, pH = 7.4 ± 0.1), and had a prospective swelling in the simulated gastric fluids (SGF, pH = 1.2) > 72.54%. In degradation studies, breakdown of the chitosan cross-linked P(NIPAAm-co-AAc) hydrogels was dependent on the cross-linking density. The chitosan cross-linked P(NIPAAm-co-AAc) hydrogels which can be tailored to create environmentally-responsive artificial extracellular materials have great potential for future use.      

<Emphasis Type="Italic">N</Emphasis>-Alkylation of benzimidazoles with ketonic Mannich bases and the reduction of the resulting 1-(3-oxopropyl)benzimidazoles

Benzimidazole, benzimidazoles diversely substituted at position 2, and 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole have been alkylated at N ¹ with ketonic Mannich bases derived from acetophenones, acetylnaphthalenes, 2-acetylthiophene and 1-tetralone to afford a series of novel 1-(3-oxopropyl)benzimidazoles. The reduction of these transamination products with NaBH₄ in methanol produced the corresponding 1-(3-hydroxypropyl)benzimidazoles in excellent yields.      

Metathesis transformations of unsaturated derivatives of β-diketones

Selected β-diketones bearing unsaturated derivatives have been demonstrated to undergo homo-metathesis and cross-metathesis with selected olefins in the presence of Grubbs catalysts. The reactions led to respective homo- and cross-metathesis products mainly with good yields and selectivities.      

Facile dehalogenation of halogenated anilines and their derivatives using Al-Ni alloy in alkaline aqueous solution

This article describes the simple hydrodehalogenation of halogenated anilines and their derivatives by the action of Raney aluminium-nickel alloy in aqueous alkaline solution at room temperature. The reaction course was monitored by means of 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and GC-MS spectra.      

Thermo-responsiveness of polysiloxanes grafted with poly(dimethyl acrylamide) segments

Thermo-sensitive polymers are of outstanding importance due to their ability to undergo controlled major changes in their properties as a response to minor modifications in temperature. The syntheses of novel polymers by grafting polysiloxane containing chlorobenzyl groups in the side chain by the homopolymerization of N,N′-dimethyl acrylamide (DMA) or the copolymerization of DMA and methyl methacrylate (MMA) using SET-LRP technique are presented. The polymers were characterized by 1H-NMR, UV, and fluorescence spectroscopy, and DSC. The thermo-sensitivity and the lower critical solution temperature (LCST), as well as the aggregation phenomena during the phase transition are evidenced by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and rheology.      

Chiral enantiopure bis(thio)ureas derived from TADDOL and their carboxylate complexation capacity

New chiral enantiopure ureas and thioureas with (R,R)-TADDOL backbone were synthesized. Bis-(thio)ureas with C2 symmetry were obtained from TADDOL iso(thio)cyanates and bifunctional amino-(thio)ureas from TADDAMINE, respectively. These were tested for carboxylate recognition capacity and the association constant was determined for the most stable complex.      

Transport properties of PVA/PEI/PEG composite membranes: sorption and permeation characterizations

Poly(vinylalcohol)/poly(ethyleneglycol)/poly(ethyleneimine) blend membranes were prepared by solution casting followed by solvent evaporation. The chemical structure of the prepared membranes was analyzed by FTIR and DSC. The sorption behavior as well as the permeabilities of the membranes for pure CO₂ and N₂ were investigated. The results show that the PVA/PEI/PEG membranes possess a higher permeability of CO₂ and a lower permeability of N₂. The membrane displays a CO₂ permeability of 27 Barrer, and a N₂ permeability of 3 Barrer at 25°C and 1 bar. CO₂ sorption behavior of the composite membrane, which can be classified as a dual-mode sorption model, and N₂ sorption behavior of the copolymeric membrane is in agreement with the Fickian diffusion model.      

Efficient and solvent-free synthesis of 1-amidoalkyl-2-naphthols using <Emphasis Type="Italic">N,N,N’,N’</Emphasis>-tetrabromobenzene-1,3-disulfonamide

N,N,N,’N’-Tetrabromobenzene-1,3-disulfonamide [TBBDA] is found to be a reusable catalyst for efficient synthesis of various amidoalkyl naphthols from β-naphthol, aromatic aldehydes and urea in good to high yields under solvent-free conditions.      

Removal of cadmium and copper ions by <Emphasis Type="Italic">Trichosporon cutaneum</Emphasis> R57 cells immobilized onto polyvinyl alcohol/tetraethoxysilane hybrid matrices

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) hybrid materials were prepared by sol-gel methods and tested as matrices for immobilization of Trichosporon cutaneum R57, capable of removing cadmium and copper ions from aqueous solutions. A kinetic model was applied and the effects of matrix TEOS content on the copper and cadmium uptake equilibria and rate constants were investigated.      

One-pot, three-component condensation of 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde derivatives, primary amines with alkyl isocyanides to N-alkyl-2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2-imino-acetamides

One-pot, three-component condensation of 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde derivatives, primary amines with alkyl isocyanides is reported. N-alkyl-2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2-iminoacetamide derivatives are generated presumably via the preliminary formation of N, N′-disubstituted benzo[b]furan-2,3-diamines and subsequent oxidation with molecular oxygen.      

Ugi products containing boronate esters

The Ugi reaction with formylphenylboronic acid derivatives as the carbonyl component proceeds to give the corresponding boron-containing dipeptide derivatives (Ugi products) in good yields.      

Total polyphenolic compounds contents (TPC), total antioxidant activities (TAA) and HPLC determination of individual polyphenolic compounds in selected Moravian and Austrian wines

Wine samples (Grüner Veltliner (GV) and Zweigelt (ZW) from four different geographical regions of Austria and Czech Republic) were analyzed to determine their total phenolic content (TPC) by applying the Folin-Ciocalteau method, total antioxidant activity (TAA) by FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) and DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl) assays, and to identify and quantify eleven phenolic compounds using a HPLC/UV-VIS method.      

Spectral study of coumarin-3-carboxylic acid interaction with human and bovine serum albumins

Fluorescence spectroscopy and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy were used to investigate the interaction of coumarin-3-carboxylic acid with human serum albumin (HSA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) under physiological conditions in a buffer solution of pH 7.4.      

Scolecite as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of 2,4,5-triarylimidazoles

Natural scolecite has been found as an effective catalyst for the one-pot synthesis of 2,4,5-triarylimidazole derivatives via a three component reaction using benzil or benzoin, aldehydes and ammonium acetate. This method provides several advantages such as being environmentally benign, reusable, possessing high yields with increased variations of the substituents in the product and preparative simplicity.      

Synthesis,characterization and antifungal testing of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-(thio)ones containing boronic acids and boronate esters

The addition of formylphenylboronic acid derivatives to thiourea and ethyl acetoacetate proceeds in the presence of an additional Lewis acid catalyst to give the corresponding 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-(thio)ones (Biginelli products) in moderate yield. Compounds were tested for antifungal activity against pure cultures of Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae but, unfortunately, none showed any appreciable activity.      

Recent development in capillary ion chromatography technology

This review summarizes the development of capillary ion chromatography (CIC) over approximately the last 5 years. It mainly focuses on the technologic aspects of several key components associated with CIC, including micropump, microscale electrodialytic eluent generator, microscale suppressor and the detector.      

Simultaneous displacement of a nitro group during coupling of diazotized <Emphasis Type="Italic">o</Emphasis>-nitroaniline with phenols

During the diazo-coupling reaction, nucleophilic displacement of a nitro group was also observed. This was the main reaction (1→7) when the starting amine bore either a chlorine or methoxy group at the para position (1b–c). The newly prepared compounds (7) might serve as convenient building blocks in synthesis of some heterocycles.      

The binary system PbO - BiVO4

Phase equilibria established in the PbO - BiVO₄ system over the whole component concentration range up to 1000°C have been investigated. A phase diagram has been constructed using DTA and XRD.
