We consider the semiclassical quantization of sine-Gordon solitons on the circle with periodic and anti-periodic boundary conditions. The 1-loop quantum corrections to the mass of the solitons are determined using zeta function regularization in the integral representation. We compare the semiclassical results with exact numerical calculations in the literature and find excellent agreement even outside the plain semiclassical regime. 相似文献

Normally, femtosecond light pulses that cross at a nonzero angle overlap over only a small region in space. This limitation can be overcome by the use of diffraction orders of a grating. We consider an arrangement in which, on diffraction of a femtosecond pulse by a grating, two beams that correspond to the first-order diffraction maxima are recombined at the image plane by a system of two confocal lenses. In this arrangement the beams overlap over the their full aperture, with the short duration of the pulses being preserved. We demonstrate the use of this setup as a simple autocorrelator and discuss a possible application to time-resolved vibrational spectroscopy. 相似文献

The rapidly developing field of ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semiconductors, where a semiconductor host is magnetically doped by transition metal impurities to produce a ferromagnetic semiconductor (e.g. Ga1−xMnxAs with x≈1-10%), is discussed with the emphasis on elucidating the physical mechanisms underlying the magnetic properties. Recent key developments are summarized with critical discussions of the roles of disorder, localization, band structure, defects, and the choice of materials in producing good magnetic quality and high Curie temperature. The correlation between magnetic and transport properties is argued to be a crucial ingredient in developing a full understanding of the properties of ferromagnetic semiconductors. 相似文献

In this paper, using the Maslov index theory in symplectic geometry, we build up some stability criteria for symmetric periodic
orbits in a Hamiltonian system, which is motivated by the recent discoveries in the n-body problem. The key ingredient is a generalized Bott-type iteration formula for periodic solution in the presence of finite
group action on the orbit. For second order system, we prove, under general boundary conditions, the close formula for the
relationship between the Morse index of an orbit in a Lagrangian system and the Maslov index of the fundamental solution for
the corresponding orbit in its Hamiltonian system counterpart, and the boundary conditions cover the cases which appeared
in the n-body problem. As an application we consider the stability problem of the celebrated figure-eight orbit due to Chenciner and
Montgomery in the planar three-body problem with equal masses, and we clarify the relationship between linear stability and
its variational nature on various loop spaces. The basic idea is as follows: the variational characterization of the figure-eight
orbit provides information about its Morse index; based on its relation to the Maslov index, our stability criteria come into
play.

By using combinatorics, we give a new proof for the recurrence relations of the characteristic polynomial coefficients, and we further obtain an explicit expression for the generic term of the coefficient sequence, which yields the trace formulae of the Cayley-Hamilton's theorem with all coefficients explicitly given. This implies a byproduct, a complete expression for the determinant of any finite-dimensional matrix in terms of the traces of its successive powers. And we discuss some of their applications to ehiral perturbation theory and general relativity. 相似文献

Xenopus oocyte maturation is an example of an all-or-none, irreversible cell fate induction process. In response to a submaximal concentration of the steroid hormone progesterone, a given oocyte may either mature or not mature, but it can exist in intermediate states only transiently. Moreover, once an oocyte has matured, it will remain arrested in the mature state even after the progesterone is removed. It has been hypothesized that the all-or-none character of oocyte maturation, and some aspects of the irreversibility of maturation, arise out of the bistability of the signal transduction system that triggers maturation. The bistability, in turn, is hypothesized to arise from the way the signal transducers are organized into a signaling circuit that includes positive feedback (which makes it so that the system cannot rest in intermediate states) and ultrasensitivity (which filters small stimuli out of the feedback loop, allowing the system to have a stable off-state). Here we review two simple graphical methods that are commonly used to analyze bistable systems, discuss the experimental evidence for bistability in oocyte maturation, and suggest that bistability may be a common means of producing all-or-none responses and a type of biochemical memory. Using the fact that the energy eigenstates of the equilateral triangle infinite well (or billiard) are available in closed form, we examine the connections between the energy eigenvalue spectrum and the classical closed paths in this geometry, using both periodic orbit theory and the short-term semi-classical behavior of wave packets. We also discuss wave packet revivals and show that there are exact revivals, for all wave packets, at times given by Trev=9μa2/4?π where a and μ are the length of one side and the mass of the point particle, respectively. We find additional cases of exact revivals with shorter revival times for zero-momentum wave packets initially located at special symmetry points inside the billiard. Finally, we discuss simple variations on the equilateral (60°-60°-60°) triangle, such as the half equilateral (30°-60°-90°) triangle and other “foldings,” which have related energy spectra and revival structures. 相似文献

Semiclassical theory based upon complexified classical mechanics is developed for periodically time-dependent scattering systems, which are minimal models of multi-dimensional systems. Semiclassical expression of the wave-matrix is derived, which is represented as the sum of the contributions from classical trajectories, where all the dynamical variables as well as the time are extended to the complex-domain. The semiclassical expression is examined by a periodically perturbed 1D barrier system and an excellent agreement with the fully quantum result is confirmed. In a stronger perturbation regime, the tunneling component of the wave-matrix exhibits a remarkable interference fringes, which is clarified by the semiclassical theory as an interference among multiple complex tunneling trajectories. It turns out that such a peculiar behavior is the manifestation of an intrinsic multi-dimensional effect closely related to a singular movement of singularities possessed by the complex classical trajectories. 相似文献

We consider a mathematical formulation of the problem of protein production during segment determination in the Drosophila blastoderm, together with some preliminary results of its analytical study. We reformulate the spatial difference equations as a set of nonlinear partial differential equations and obtain their dimensionless form in the continuum limit. Using previous results obtained by the gene circuit method, we find an asymptotic statement of the problem with a small parameter. Some results of the comparison method applied to the model are obtained, and exact stationary upper solutions are derived. They exhibit distinctive features of localized bell-shaped structures. Semiclassical inversion of torsional vibration energy levels: Method,and application to acetaldehyde

An RKR-based semiclassical inversion procedure for restricted rotation potentials is developed, tested, and applied to the torsional vibration of acetaldehyde. The method is based on a semiclassical quantization of the problem which in higher-order approximations is shown to yield eigenvalues of extremely high accuracy. Two-phase integral functions are extracted from the torsional eigenvalue spectrum, one of which depends on the potential well and the other on the potential barrier, and these two functions are then subjected to RKR manipulation. The model potential is reproduced within a few per cent in all regions of the potential and the height of the barrier of acetaldehyde, V3 = 406.1 cm?1, is in excellent agreement with the quantum mechanical results. 相似文献

For a dynamical system described by a set of autonomous differential equations, an attractor can be either a point, or a periodic orbit, or even a strange attractor. Recently a new chaotic system with only one parameter has been presented where besides a point attractor and a chaotic attractor, it also has a coexisting attractor limit cycle which makes evident the complexity of such a system. We study using analytic tools the dynamics of such system. We describe its global dynamics near the infinity, and prove that it has no Darboux first integrals. 相似文献

The non-renormalizability of quantum gravity poses a great problem to the construction of any unified field theory of all known interactions. Normally, we start with a unitary theory of gravity and investigate its renormalization properties. This is the first of a series of papers where we start with the opposite approach, beginning with a renormalizable theory and investigating its unitarity structure. In particular, we study non-perturbative approaches to the quantization of conformal gravity. Using ADM coordinates, we perform the canonical quantization of the Weyl action Cμναβ2, which is renormalizable and is also local scale invariant. Although this theory is certainly not unitary in perturbation theory, we speculate that unitarity may be restored when we approach this theory non-perturbatively, by examining the possibility of different phase transitions. 相似文献
