Two series of novel liquid crystalline photo-crosslinkable bis(vanillylidene-azobenzene) cycloalkanone containing polymers, namely poly(vanillylidene alkyloxy-4,4'-azobenzenedicarboxylic ester)s, have been synthesised from bis[m-hydroxyalkyloxy(vanillylidene)cycloalkanone] (m = 6, 8, 10) with azobenzene dicarbonylchloride by solution polycondensation method at ambient temperature. Polymers with varying spacer lengths have been synthesised and characterised by spectroscopic techniques. These variations have been correlated with the thermal properties and transition temperatures. Thermal transitions were analysed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the mesophases were identified by hot stage optical polarised microscopy (HOPM). All of the polymers were found to exhibit liquid crystalline properties. Transition temperatures were observed to decrease with increasing spacer length. The thermogravimetric analysis reveals that all of the polymers were stable up to 280°C undergo two-stage decomposition. Using the UV-visible photolysis studies we investigated the simultaneous behaviour of reactivity rates of crosslinking in the vanillylidene unit and isomerisation caused by the azobenzene unit in the photo-crosslinkable main chain liquid crystalline polymers. The photolysis of liquid crystalline bis(vanillylidene)cycloalkanone-based polymers reveals that there are two kinds of photoreactions in these systems: the EZ photoisomerisation of azobenzene unit and 2p+2p addition by vanillylidene units. The EZ photoisomerisation in the liquid crystal phase disrupts the parallel stacking of the mesogens, resulting in the transition from the liquid crystal phase to isotropic phase. The photoreaction involving 2p+2p addition of the bis(vanillylidene)cycloalkanone units in the polymers results in the conjoining of the chains. The cyclopentanone polymers exhibited a faster rate of photolysis than the cyclohexanone polymers.  相似文献

Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers with an extremely dense azobenzene moiety in a unit area, were prepared using a series of ionic liquid crystalline polymers (ILCPs) and their nonionic family (NLCPs). The isober curves and the compression-expansion isotherms of the ILCPs and NLCPs on water showed that the polymer Langmuir monolayers have good quality. The molecular organization of these polymers on the water surface depended on the length of spacer alkyl chains and the existence of ammonium salts. Low-molecular-weight liquid crystals between the LCP monolayer dipped glass substrates showed a homeotropic alignment.  相似文献

Thermotropic liquid crystalline (TLC) polymers with low melt transitions are useful for imaging technologies. This is the first report describing thermotropic liquid crystalline copolyesters of low melt transitions comprised of a mesogen with up to three different spacer moieties. We have noted that the smectic mesophase range decreased with increasing amounts of different spacer moieties, without altering the isotropic transition and thereby leading to a broader nematic range. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Three sets of novel side-chain liquid crystalline polymers with monosubstituted azobenzene moieties in the side-chain have been studied. These are poly(p-(4′-methoxy-4-oxyhexyloxy azobenzene) benzyl methacrylate) (PPHABM), poly(m-(4′-methoxy-4-oxyhexyloxy azobenzene) benzyl methacrylate) (PMHABM) and poly(o-(4′-methoxy-4-oxyhexyloxy azobenzene) benzyl methacrylate) (POHABM). The chemical structure of the monomers was confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The structural characterisation of the polymers was performed by 1H NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography, and their phase behaviour and liquid crystalline properties were studied using differential scanning calorimetry, polarised optical microscopy and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. The results show that the transitional behaviour of side-chain liquid crystalline polymers containing monosubstituted azobenzene moieties depends strongly on the position of the substituent on the azobenzene moiety; for example, the ortho-monosubstituted polymers do not form liquid crystalline phases, but all the para- and meta-monosubstituted polymers exhibit a smectic A phase. Furthermore, the glass transition temperature (Tg ) of the polymers decreases in the order, para > meta > ortho. For the PPHABM and PMHABM polymers the isotropic temperature (Ti ) and liquid crystalline range (ΔT, from Tg to Ti ) are found to be in the order, para > meta, although it is surprising that the associated enthalpy changes in these polymers is the opposite order, meta > para.  相似文献

A series of poly(azomethine)s containing amide, ether, or ester groups was prepared by the condensation of dialdehydes with various diamines. The thermotropic liquid crystalline properties were examined by DSC and microscopic observations. The effects of the number and position of amide groups, which are attached to the rigid segment, on the thermotropic liquid crystalline properties of the homo-and copoly(amide-azomethine-ether)s were also investigated in this study. The copolymerization took place by changing the amount of amide group to obtain copoly(amide-azomethine) ( P13 and P14 ) which exhibit thermotropic liquid crystalline properties. The poly(azomethine)s containing ether or ester groups also exhibited thermotropic liquid crystalline properties. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

An Erratum has been published for this article in Journal of Polymer Science Part A: Polymer Chemistry (2003) 41(23) 3862 A new series of combined‐type, azobenzene‐based organophosphorus liquid‐crystalline polymers were synthesized, and their photoisomerization properties were studied. The prepared polymers contained azobenzene units as both the main‐chain and side‐chain mesogens. Various groups were substituted in the terminal of the side‐chain azobenzene mesogen, and the effects of the substituents were investigated. All the polymers were prepared at the ambient temperature by solution polycondensation with various 4‐substituted phenylazo‐4′‐phenyloxyhexylphosphorodichloridates and 4,4′‐bis(6‐hydroxyhexyloxy) azobenzene. The polymers were characterized with gel permeation chromatography, Fourier transform infrared, and 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR spectroscopy. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that all the polymers had high char yields. The liquid‐crystalline behavior of the polymers was examined with hot‐stage optical polarizing microscopy, and all the polymers showed liquid‐crystalline properties. The formation of a mesophase was confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The DSC data suggested that mesophase stability was better for electron‐withdrawing substituents than for halogens and unsubstituted ones. Ultraviolet irradiation studies indicated that the time taken for the completion of photoisomerization depended on the dipolar moment, size, and donor–acceptor characteristics of the terminal substituents. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Chiral liquid crystalline polymers containing biphenylene and azobenzene as the mesogensand S(-)-2-methyl-1-butanol as the chiral end group were synthesized and characterized by DSC,POM and X-ray diffraction. These polymers show crystalline or glassy liquid crystalline phase atroom temperature. Most polymers show smectic A or highly ordered smectic phases abovemelting temperature.  相似文献

Previous studies on liquid crystalline polyurethanes prepared from 4,4′-bis(2-hydroxyethoxy)biphenyl (BHBP) and 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate (TDI) were continued. In this article, a series of polyurethanes, which differ in the flexible spacer length and BHBP content is described. Poly(oxytetramethylene)diols of different molecular weights (PTMO, M n = 250, 650, 1000, 2000) were used as flexible spacers. The polyurethanes were investigated by DSC, polarizing microscopy, x-ray diffractometry, and IR spectroscopy. The molecular weight distribution was determined by GPC. The morphology of the polyurethanes was investigated by the SALS method. Partial replacement of BHBP by 25–75 mol % PTMO and the flexible spacer length influence the liquid crystalline properties, the phase transition temperatures, and the range of mesophase occurrence. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

This work is a continuation of our earlier investigations of liquid crystalline polyurethanes prepared from 4,4′-bis(2-hydroxyethoxy) biphenyl (BHBP), 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate (TDI), and poly (oxytetramethylene) diols (PTMO). The annealing effects on the thermal properties of the investigation polyurethanes are presented for three samples with the same BHBP content, different flexible spacer length, and different molecular weight of the polyurethanes. The annealed polyurethanes were investigated by means of DSC, and polarizing microscopy. The results of the thermal analysis show that the temperatures of phase transitions depend on the annealing temperature and time. These dependences are different for different molecular weights. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Photo‐chemically tunable photonic band gap materials are prepared by infiltration of liquid crystal polymers having azobenzene groups into voids of SiO2 inverse opal films. Linearly polarized (LP) light irradiation results in transformation from a random to an anisotropic molecular orientation of azobenzene side chains in the voids of the SiO2 inverse opal film, leading to the reversible and stable shift of the reflection peak to longer wavelength more than 15 nm. To improve switching properties, we use copolymers of azobenzene monomer and tolane monomer, which have higher birefringence, as infiltration materials into the voids. The azobenzene‐tolane copolymers are found to show higher birefringence than azobenzene homopolymers by the LP light irradiation at higher temperature. Consequently, the reflection band of the SiO2 inverse opal film infiltrated with the azobenzene‐tolane copolymer can be shifted to longer wavelength region more than 55 nm by the irradiation of LP light. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four series of copoly(amide-ester)s containing conjugated double bonds were prepared by using direct polycondensation in the presence of diphenylchlorophosphate (DPCP) and pyridine. Series I–III were prepared from para, meta-aminophenol, or their mixture with p-phenylene bis(acrylic acid) (PPBA), p-carboxylic cinnamic acid (PCCA), and stilbenedicarboxylic acid (SDBA), respectively. Series IV was prepared from a mixture of aminophenols [2-methyl 4-aminophenol (MePAP) and m-aminophenol (MAP)] with a mixture of diacids (PPBA and SDBA). Thermotropic liquid-crystalline behavior of these polymers was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and optical polarizing microscopy equipped with a heating stage. Series I , series II , and P40–P100 of series IV could undergo crosslinking reaction by heating. However, series III could undergo crosslinking reaction only by photoirradiation upon heating. After crosslinking reaction occurred, the properties of these polymers were also examined by DSC, TGA, WAXD, and IR. The synthesized polymers could be crosslinked in the liquid-crystalline phase with retention of the order in the final crosslinked solid. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A series of semi-aromatic poly(ether-ester)s containing cinnamic group was prepared from 4,4′-diacrylic acid-α,ω-phenoxyalkanes with diols in the presence of diphenylchlorophosphate (DPCP) and pyridine as a catalyst and solvent. The phase behavior of these polymers was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical polarizing microscopy equipped with a heating stage, and wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD). All of the poly(ether-ester)s, except P3 , show nematic or smectic thermotropic liquid crystalline behaviour under optical polarizing microscopic observation. These polymers can undergo photocrosslinking reaction upon heating, as examined by IR, solubility, and DSC analysis. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

We report systematic studies on a homologous series of twin liquid crystalline (LC) molecules based on phenyl and naphthyl azobenzene ( PnP and NpnNp ) as well as segmented copolyesters based on them. The twin series had the structure azobenzene–oligooxyethylene–azobenzene, where the ethyleneoxy length was varied from 2 to 6 units. The LC properties of the twin series depended on the chemical structure of the azochromophore and also the length of the central oligooxyethylene segment. The PnP series exhibited smectic LC properties for n > three oligooxyethylene units. Conversely, NpnNp series exhibited spherulitic phases only for the shortest member – Np2Np . One non‐LC short spacer twin ( P2P ) and one LC long spacer twin ( P6P ) were incorporated as part of a main chain polyester composed of fully aliphatic segments of sebacate and di or tetraethylene glycol (DEG/TEG) units by melt polycondensation. Non‐LC P2P formed LC polymers even at low (5 mol %) incorporation in DEG‐based copolymers, whereas the LC‐ P6P could do so only at 30 mol % incorporation. The LC properties of the twin molecules as well as copolymers were studied using differential scanning calorimetry, polarized light microscopy (PLM) along with variable temperature wide angle X‐ray diffraction. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three series of the thermotropic liquid crystalline copoly(imide-ester)s were prepared by direct polycondensation. The first two series of the copoly(imide-ester)s were synthesized from N-(4-carboxyphenyl) trimellitimide with N,N-di(hydroxypropyl) pyromellitic diimide and various aromatic diols. The third series of copoly(imide-ester)s were prepared by N-(4-carboxyphenyl) trimellitimide with various imide-diols (methylene spacer = 2–6) and phenyl hydroquinone. The structures and thermal properties of the synthesized poly(imide-ester)s were examined by FTIR spectrum, wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal optical polarized microscope, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The effects of the structures of the aromatic diols on the thermal properties of the resulting copoly(imide-ester)s were investigated. It was found that most of the copoly(imide-ester)s possessed excellent mesophase stabilities and thermostabilities. The mesophase stabilities of poly(imide-ester)s decreased with the increase of the size of lateral group, and the mesophase range increased with the increase of the amount of PhHQ. No significant odd-even effects were observed between the methylene spacer lengths and transition temperatures. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Liquid crystalline epoxy resins were synthesized from 4,4′-dihydroxybiphenyl (DHB), which was used as a mesogenic component, and diglycidyl ethers of aliphatic glycols (ethylene glycol and 1,6-hexanediol) which were used as flexible spacers. The synthesis was carried out by the catalytic polyaddition in the melt. Triphenylphosphine was used as the catalyst. The course of the polyaddition was investigated at various molecular ratios of the reactants. It was found that both linear and branched structures were formed in the course of the synthesis. The rates of the formation of the structures were calculated. The epoxy oligomers were investigated by DSC, polarizing microscope, and x-ray and IR spectroscopy. The molecular weight distribution was determined by GPC. The dependence of liquid crystalline properties of the obtained epoxy resins on the molecular weight and on the chain length of the flexible spacer was investigated. The molecular weight of the epoxy oligomers and the length of flexible spacer influence the phase transition temperatures. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Three series of polymers containing p-phenylene diacrylic group were prepared by direct polycondensation in the presence of diphenylchlorophosphate and pyridine. Series I was prepared from p-phenylene bis(acrylic acid) with various hydroquinones. Series II was prepared from p-phenylene bis (β-cyano acrylic acid) with methylhydroquinone. Series III was prepared from 3-methyl-4-aminophenol with p-phenylene bis(acrylic acid) or p-phenylene bis(β-cyano acrylic acid), respectively. The phase behavior of these polymers was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical polarizing microscopy equipped with a heating stage, and wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD). It was found that these polymers, except IIIb , exhibit thermotropic liquid-crystalline properties and show threaded or Schlieren texture under the optical polarizing microscopic observation. Furthermore, the melting temperatures of these polymers were decreased in the range of 254–354°C by incorporating with p-phenylene diacrylic group into the main chain. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

This investigation extends our previous investigations of liquid crystalline polyurethanes prepared from 4,4′-bis(2-hydroxyethoxy)biphenyl (BHBP), 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate, and poly(oxytetramethylene)diols as the flexible spacers. The influence of molecular weight of investigated polyurethanes on their properties is discussed for two series with the same content of BHBP and different lengths of flexible spacers. The polyurethanes were investigated by means of DSC, polarizing microscopy, x-ray diffractometry, and IR spectroscopy. The molecular weight distribution was determined by GPC. Morphology was studied by the SALS method. A new homologous series of liquid crystalline (LC) polymethacrylates, the poly[ω-(2-phenoxycarbonyl-naphthalene-6-yloxy)alkyl methacrylate]s, in which the length of the alkyl spacer is varied between 3 and 12 methylene units, have been synthesized by free-radical polymerization. The prepared polymers were studied by IR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy, viscosity measurements, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and polarized microscopy. Polymers with 3 or 4 methylene units spacer were glassy in nature, whereas those with 5–12 methylene units spacer exhibited smectic behavior. The glass transition temperatures decrease on increasing spacer length. The isotropization temperatures and the corresponding transition entropies showed an odd–even effect, with the odd members exhibiting the higher values. This effect attenuates on increasing spacer length. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 37: 2391–2399, 1999  相似文献
