This paper presents a formulation of the boundary element method (BEM) for solution of axisymmetric cavity flow problems. The governing equation is written in terms of Stokes' stream function, requiring a new fundamental solution to be found. The iterative procedure for adjusting the free-surface position is similar to that used for planar cavity flows. Numerical results are compared with finite difference and finite element solutions, showing the robustness of the BEM model.

The penalty function formulation of the finite element method is described for the analysis of transient incompressible creeping flows. Marker particles are utilized to represent moving free surfaces and to visualize the flow patterns. For determining the movement of markers from element to element, the area coordinate system of the linear triangular element is introduced. With the method presented, a punch indentation problem and an injection problem for an L-shaped cavity are solved for Newtonian and power-law fluids.

An implicit finite element method is presented for the solution of steady and unsteady inviscid compressible flows on triangular meshes under transonic conditions. The method involves a first-order time-stepping scheme with a finite element discretization that reduces to central differencing on a rectangular mesh. On a solid wall the slip condition is prescribed and the pressure is obtained from an approximation of the normal momentum equation. With this solver no artificial viscosity is added to ensure the success of the calculation. Numerical examples are given for steady and unsteady cases.

This paper formulates a finite volume analogue of a finite element schematization of three‐dimensional shallow water equations. The resulting finite volume schematization, when applied to the continuity equation, exactly reproduces the set of matrix equations that is obtained by the application of the corresponding finite element schematization to the continuity equation. The procedure allows the consistent and mass conserving coupling of the finite element Telemac model for three‐dimensional flow with the finite volume Delft3D‐WAQ model for water quality. The work has been carried out as part of a joint development by LNHE and WL∣Delft Hydraulics to explore the mutual interaction of their software. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A method is developed for modeling fluid transport in domains that do not conform to the finite element mesh. One or more level set functions are used to describe the fluid domain. A background, non‐conformal mesh is decomposed into elements that conform to the level set interfaces. Enrichment takes place by adding nodes that lie on the interfaces. Unlike other enriched finite element methods, the proposed technique requires no changes to the underlying element assembly, element interpolation, or element quadrature. The complexity is entirely contained within the element decomposition routines. It is argued that the accuracy of the method is no less than that for eXtended Finite Element Methods (XFEM) with Heaviside enrichment. The accuracy is demonstrated using multiple numerical tests. In all cases, optimal rates of convergence are obtained for both volume and surface quantities. Jacobi preconditioning is shown to remove the ill‐conditioning that may result from the nearly degenerate conformal elements. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A new method based on the anisotropic tensor force finite element and Taylor-Galerkin finite element is presented in the present paper. Its application to two-dimensional viscous transonic flow in turbomachinery improves the convergence rate and stability of calculation, and the results obtained agree well with the experimental measurements.

A unified algorithm is presented for the refinement of finite element meshes consisting of tensor product Lagrange elements in any number of space dimensions. The method leads to repeatedly refined n-irregular grids with associated constraint equations. Through an object-oriented implementation existing solvers can be extended to handle mesh refinements without modifying the implementation of the finite element equations. Various versions of the refinement procedure are investigated in a porous media flow problem involving singularities around wells. A domain decomposition-type finite element method is also proposed based on the refinement technique. This method is applied to flow in heterogeneous porous media.

In this study, we examine the numerical simulation of transient viscoelastic flows with two moving free surfaces. A modified Galerkin finite element method is implemented to the two-dimensional non-steady motion of the fluid of the Oldroyd-B type. The fluid is initially placed between two parallel plates and bounded by two straight free boundaries. In this Lagrangian finite element method, the spatial mesh deforms in time along with the moving free boundaries. The unknown shape of the free surfaces is determined with the flow field u, v, τ, p by the deformable finite element method, combined with a predictor-corrector scheme in an uncoupled fashion. The moving free surfaces and fluid motion of both Newtonian and non-Newtonian flows are investigated. The results include the influence of surface tension, fluid inertia and elasticity.

In this paper we describe finite element computations of the free-surface flow of a viscous fluid down an undulating inclined plane. The technique developed here employs an orthogonal mapping that is computed along with the velocity and pressure. This is allied to a technique to compute symbolically the Jacobian and other derivatives required for numerical continuation methods. The solutions obtained are compared with laboratory experiments and finite element computations reported by Pritchard and co-workers. The finite element computational method used by these authors employs spines to represent the free surface. An excellent agreement is shown to exist between the new computations and the laboratory experiments, and with the numerical solutions of Pritchard and co-workers.

The proposed numerical code simulates the displacement of two miscible fluids through a saturated porous medium (2D configuration). Coupling between flow and transport is carried out by an equation of state. In the mixing zone, the density is assumed to vary as a function of concentration. The model uses a combination of the mixed hybrid finite element method and the discontinuous finite element method.Applied in its classical development, the mixed hybrid finite element method leads to a non-conservative formulation of the mass balance equation. However, one of the main reasons for using this technique is the ability to conserve mass cell-by-cell. Consequently, a new formulation that makes it possible to hold the conservative form of the continuity equation and so preserve the mass cell-wise is proposed. Although the pertinence of these approaches could have also been tested on other standard benchmarks, e.g., Elder's problem or salt dome problem, we have voluntarily limited ourselves to Henry's problem (1964). This choice was dictated by the possibility of a comparison with a semi-analytical solution. Contrary to previous numerical results, the comparison is made for the whole mixing zone. The very good agreement between our results and the semi-analytical solution shows the robustness and the efficiency of this approach for the seawater intrusion problems.

A new computational method is developed for numerical solution of the Richards equation for flow in variably saturated porous media. The new method, referred to as the mixed transform finite element method, employs the mixed formulation of the Richards equation but expressed in terms of a partitioned transform. An iterative finite element algorithm is derived using a Newton–Galerkin weak statement. Specific advantages of the new method are demonstrated with applications to a set of one— dimensional test problems. Comparisons with the modified Picard method show that the new method produces more robust solutions for a broad range of soil– moisture regimes, including flow in desiccated soils, in heterogeneous media and in layered soils with formation of perched water zones. In addition, the mixed transform finite element method is shown to converge faster than the modified Picard method in a number of cases and to accurately represent pressure head and moisture content profiles with very steep fronts. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The free fluid-surface of incompressible creeping flows is analyzed using a finite element method. A pseudo-concentration (PC) function is introduced to determine the position of the free surface. The Taylor-Galerkin finite element method (TGFEM) is applied to solve the equation of the PC function. Nine-node quadratic interpolation is used for both PC and velocity. The unsteady flows of fluids moving of their own weight are analyzed using the proposed method.

This paper presents a new and efficient method for computing the flow of a non-Newtonian fluid. The approach is based on two independent concepts:Time-dependent simulation of viscoelastic flow: A new decoupled algorithm, presented in P. Saramito, Simulation numérique d'ecoulements de fluides viscoélastiques par éléments finis incompressibles et une méthode de directions alternées; applications, Thèse de l'Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble, 1990 and P. Saramito, Numerical simulation of viscoelastic fluid flows using incompressible finite element method and a θ-method, Math. Modelling Num. Anal., 35 (1994) 1–35, enables us to split the major difficulties of this problem, and to solve it more efficiently. Moreover, this scheme is of order two in time, and can be used to obtain stationary flows in an efficient way.Conservative finite element method: this method combines the incompressible Raviart Thomas element, the discontinuous Lesaint-Raviart element, and a finite volume element method. It satisfies exactly the mass conservation law, and leads to an optimal size for the nonlinear system in terms of the total degree of freedom versus the mesh size.We apply our numerical procedure to the Phan-Thien-Tanner model with a classical benchmark: the four to one abrupt contraction. The numerical solutions exhibit good behavior, especially near the singularity, in the vicinity of the re-entrant corner. The numerical experiments present the main features of such flows: vortex development and overshooting of the velocity profile along the axis of symmetry in the entry region.

Abrupt changes in boundary conditions in viscous flow problems give rise to stress singularities. Ordinary finite element methods account effectively for the global solution but perform poorly near the singularity. In this paper we develop singular finite elements, similar in principle to the crack tip elements used in fracture mechanics, to improve the solution accuracy in the vicinity of the singular point and to speed up the rate of convergence. These special elements surround the singular point, and the corresponding field shape functions embody the form of the singularity. Because the pressure is singular, there is no pressure node at the singular point. The method performs well when applied to the stick–slip problem and gives more accurate results than those from refined ordinary finite element meshes.

This paper describes a method for determining the fluid forces on oscillating bodies in viscous fluid when the corresponding flow problem has been solved using the finite element method. These forces are characterized by the concept of added mass, added damping and added force. Numerical results are obtained for several example body shapes. Comparison is made with exact analytical results and other finite element results for the limiting cases of Stoke's flow and inviscid flow, and good agreement is obtained. The results for finite values of the body amplitude parameter β show the appearance of added force from the steady streaming component of the flow for asymmetric bodies. Results are also obtained for the associated flow where the fluid remote from a fixed body is oscillating.

A numerical method based on the finite element method is presented for simulating the two-dimensional transient motion of a viscous liquid with free surfaces. For ease of numerical treatment of the free surface expressed by a multiple-valued function, the marker particle method is employed. Numerous virtual particles are spread over all regions occupied by liquid. They move about on a fixed finite element mesh with the liquid velocity at their positions. These particles contribute nothing to the dynamics of the liquid and only serve as markers of liquid regions. The velocity field within liquid regions is calculated by solving the Navier– Stokes equations and the equation of continuity by the finite element method based on quadrilateral elements. A detailed discussion is given of the methodological problems arising in the implementation of the marker particle method on an unstructured finite element mesh and of the solutions to these problems. The proposed method is demonstrated on three sample problems: the broken dam problem, the impact of a falling liquid drop on a still liquid and the entry of a rigid block into water. Good agreement has been obtained in the comparison of the present numerical results with available experimental data.

Theoretical and numerical formulations are presented for the conjugate problem involving incompressible flow and flow in a saturated porous medium. The major focus of the work is the development of a generally applicable finite element method for the simulation of both fixed interface and evolving porous interface problems. The available alternatives for coupling Darcy and non-Darcy models to the Navier-Stokes equations have been studied and evaluated in a mixed finite element framework. Questions regarding convergence of the finite element method for porous flow models have been addressed. Numerical experiments on simple flow geometries have revealed the shortcomings of both the Darcy and Brinkman models. Application of the more realistic models to practical, multidimensional, flow studies has also been demonstrated.
