Existence of maximal hypersurfaces and of foliations by maximal hypersurfaces is proven in two classes of asymptotically flat spacetimes which possess a one parameter group of isometries whose orbits are timelike near infinity.. The first class consists of strongly causal asymptotically flat spacetimes which contain no black hole or white hole (but may contain ergoregions where the Killing orbits fail to be timelike). The second class of spacetimes possess a black hole and a white hole, with the black and white hole horizons intersecting in a compact 2-surfaceS.Supported in part by KBN grant #2 1047 9101Supported in part by NSF grant PHY-8918388.  相似文献

Killing vectors give the linear first integrals of the geodesic equations on Riemannian manifolds and spacetimes, while Killing tensors give the quadratic, cubic, and higher-order first integrals. Here it is shown that the Lie algebra of Killing vectors,, is extended by Killing tensors into a graded algebra,. This sheds some light on the comment by Xanthopoulos [1] on the apparent scarcity of irreducible Killing tensors. Examples are presented of the graded algebras when is abelian and when is nonabelian.  相似文献

The aim of the present work is to investigate the charge structure of neutron by calculating its root mean square charge radius r n 2 1/2 and the corresponding charge form factor,G n(q), within the general framework of quark-parton model. The neutron (the nucleon in general) is considered to be disc-like in conformity with the idea of Lorentz invariance. Using the proton charge radius, r p 2 =0·707 fm2 as input, our calculations not only reproduce the observed negative sign correctly but also give reasonable value for the magnitude of r n 2 when compared with the experimental limits. –0·16r n 2 –0·11 (fm2). Predictiona are also made for the proton and the neutron charge form factors and the results compared with the data. One of us (D. P.) would like to express his gratitude to Professor A. N. Mitra for his interest and advice in the work, and to Dr. S. M. Mustafa for the warm hospitality at the University of Mosul.  相似文献

On the damping of phase oscillations in a weak-focusing synchroton
An equation of the phase oscillations in a weak-focusing synchroton is derived for the case that an arbitrary high-frequency field of sinusoidal time dependence is distributed on the circumference of the accelerator. It is shown that the damping of phase oscillations is practically independent of the shape of the high-frequency field. From this we get the special case that any adjustments to the accelerator gaps, considered for example in [1], are useless.

The current and logarithm-of-the-current distributionsn(i) andn(ln i) on bond diluted two-dimensional random-resistor networks at the percolation threshold are studied by a modified transfer matrix method. Thek th moment (–9k8) of n(ln i) i.e., ln i&k, is found to scale with the linear sizeL as (InL)(k). The exponents (k) are not inconsistent with the recent theoretical prediction (k)=k, with deviations which may be attributed to severe finitesize effects. For small currents, ln n(y), yielding information on the threshold below which the multifractality of (i) breaks down. Our numerical results for the moments of the currents are consistent with other available results.  相似文献

The aim of this note is to show that the affine Lie algebraA 1 (1) has a natural family , ,v of Fock representations on the spaceC[x i,y j;i andj ], parametrized by (,v) C 2. By corresponding the highest weight , of , to each (,), the parameter spaceC 2 forms a double cover of the weight spaceC0C1 with singularities at linear forms of level –2; this number is (–1)-times the dual Coxeter number. Our results contain explicit realizations of irreducible non-integrable highest wieghtA 1 (1) -modules for generic (,v).  相似文献

The error probability for a coherent optical heterodyne FSK system with a limiter-discriminator-integrator (LDI) detector is analysed. The analysis includes laser quantum phase noise, the correlated receiver additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), Gaussian narrow-band IF filtering and intersymbol interference (ISI) caused by it. It is shown that, for 1 dBEb/N 0penalty at bit error rate (BER) 10–9, (i) the normalized IF beat spectral linewidth T0.35% for frequency deviation ratioh=0.5(MSK), and T0.5% forh=0.7 (the receiver is insensitive to laser quantum phase noise ath=1.0, if ISI is not included.); (ii) if ISI is incorporated, T0.15% forh=0.5, T0.5% forh=0.7, both with 3dB bandwidth-bit period product (3.0>BT1.5), and T0.5% forh=1.0 with BT1.0 ifT0.35% when ISI exists,h=0.7 is optimum;h=1.0 otherwise.  相似文献

We consider the thermodynamic pressurep(, ) of a classical system of particles with the two-body interaction potentialq(r)+ v K(r), where is the number of space dimensions, is a positive parameter, and is the chemical potential. The temperature is not shown in the notation. We prove rigorously, for hard-core potentialsq(r) and for a very general class of functionsK(s), that the limit 0 of the pressurep(, ) exists and is given by where the limit and the supremum can be interchanged. Here is a certain class of nonnegative, Riemann integrable functions,D is a cube of volume |D|, anda 0() is the free energy density of a system withK=0 and density . A similar result is proved for the free energy.  相似文献

In general relativity, conservation of energy and momentum is expressed by an equation of the form /x= 0, where –gT represents the total energy, momentum, and stress. This equation arises from the divergence formula dV v = (/x v )d 4 d. Here we show that this formula fails to account properly for the system of basis vectors e(x). We obtain the (invariant) divergence formula e dV v = e (/x v + )d 4 d. Conservation of energy and momentum is therefore expressed by the covariant equation (/x v ) + = 0. We go on to calculate the variation of the action under uniform displacements in space-time. This calculation yields the covariant equation of conservation, as well as the fully symmetric energy tensor . Finally, we discuss the transfer of energy and momentum, within the context of Einstein's theory of gravitation.  相似文献

We present a model for a one-dimensional anisotropic exclusion process describing particles moving deterministically on a ring of lengthL with a single defect, across which they move with probability 0 p 1. This model is equivalent to a two-dimensional, six-vertex model in an extreme anisotropic limit with a defect line interpolating between open and periodic boundary conditions. We solve this model with a Bethe ansatz generalized to this kind of boundary condition. We discuss in detail the steady state and derive exact expressions for the currentj, the density profilen(x), and the two-point density correlation function. In the thermodynamic limitL the phase diagram shows three phases, a low-density phase, a coexistence phase, and a high-density phase related to the low-density phase by a particle-hole symmetry. In the low-density phase the density profile decays exponentially with the distance from the boundary to its bulk value on a length scale . On the phase transition line diverges and the currentj approaches its critical valuej c = p as a power law,j c – j –1/2. In the coexistence phase the width of the interface between the high-density region and the low-density region is proportional toL 1/2 if the density f 1/2 and=0 independent ofL if = 1/2. The (connected) two-point correlation function turns out to be of a scaling form with a space-dependent amplitude n(x1, x2) =A(x2)A Ke–r/ withr = x 2x 1 and a critical exponent = 0.  相似文献

E-type glass fibers were coated with poly(-aminopropyltriethoxysilane), treating them with a 1% (v/v) monomer aqueous solution. The fibers were labeled with a dansyl-sulfonamide conjugate by reaction of acetonitrile solutions of dansyl chloride with the amine groups immobilized on the glass fiber surface. Interactions of the labeled coating polymer with solvents of different polarities were estimated by measurements of the fluorescence band shifts of the label. It was found that for aprotic solvents, the solvent dipolar coupling relaxation mechanism is dominated by thermodynamic interactions of the solvent with the polymer matrix, while for protic solvents this mechanism is dominated by specific interactions between solvent molecules and the excited state of the chromophore. Different experimental excited-state dipole moments were obtained for nonpolar and polar solvents (* NP = 7.2 ± 1.6 D, * P = 11.9 ± 1.5 D). Using the AM1 method, excited-state dipole moments for the first and second singlets were calculated and it was concluded that * NP *2 11/2 and * P *2 21/2. Accordingly, neither the glass support nor the coating polar influence the excited-state properties of dansyl. The temperature dependence of dansyl emission allows the determination of the relaxation temperature of the coating polymer, which was estimated as 175 K for the coating used.  相似文献

The dynamics of short distance interaction is considered from viewpoint of the quark field theory. If the effective coupling of quarks (the invariant charge(p 2)) decreases with distance (with increasingp 2) the field picture unifies different phenomenological models: reggeology in the region of smallp and partonology in the region of highp but(p 2 ) lnp 2 1 and predict deviations with a subsequent increase ofp . A character of the deviations depends on the behaviour of whenp 2. The variants of the asymptotic freedom (0) and scale invariance (g 2 0 ) are discussed. The strong suppression of—3 decay is considered as a support for the latter.Presented at the Symposium on Hadron-Hadron Scattering at High Energies, Liblice, Czechoslovakia, June 16–21, 1975.  相似文献

We study the antiferromagnetic q-state Potts model on the square lattice for q=3 and q=4, using the Wang–Swendsen–Kotecký (WSK) Monte Carlo algorithm and a powerful finite-size-scaling extrapolation method. For q=3 we obtain good control up to correlation length 5000; the data are consistent with ()=Ae 2 p (1+a 1 e + ...) as , with p1. The staggered susceptibility behaves as stagg 5/3. For q=4 the model is disordered (2) even at zero temperature. In appendices we prove a correlation inequality for Potts antiferromagnets on a bipartite lattice, and we prove ergodicity of the WSK algorithm at zero temperature for Potts antiferromagnets on a bipartite lattice.  相似文献

The spin-two particle is described by a symmetric tensorh subject to the subsidiary conditionsh = h =0. Their covariant generalization and the wave equation have been obtained directly from the Eulerian variational equations by algebraic methods only. In addition to the tensor fieldh a symmetric third-rank tensor = as well as a vector fieldA have been added, neither of which enter in the final result. The Lagrangian function is taken as a linear sum of all combinations which can be constructed from these functions, as well as terms involving the curvature tensor and its two possible contractions. Variation with respect toh , andA independently gives the Euler equations. Combining the various trace equations and choice of arbitrary constants yields the subsidiary conditions, while the Euler equations themselves give the connection between the auxiliary functions and the tensorh as well as the generalization of the wave equationD D h + 2R h -R h -R h +g R h +Rh =m 2 h Finally, variation with respect tog yields the energy-momentum tensor.  相似文献

We derive the exact matrix field theory for a replicated grassmannian representation of a local pairing superconducting disorder ensemble including three superconducting order parameters and the spin-flip pairbreaking mechanism. Disorder is assumed to be gaussian distributed. We find by exactly solving the saddle-point equation the criterion for a vanishing gap –1 + –1 , where denotes the averaged superconducting order parameter, –1 the spin-flip scattering rate, and –1 the scattering rate corresponding to correlations of Re(–). Taken at =0, our field theory, which is exact in all orders of –1 , contains new terms in addition to those of theO( –1 ) model derived by Efetov et al. Our formulation transfers correctly to all orders the invariances of the action into symmetries of the matrix field theory. The saddle point approximation is outlined and it is shown how singular corrections to the saddle point density of states arise atE F in a gapless superconductor. Finally singular corrections in the two particle propagator, the density correlation function and the conductivity are calculated for =0 in one loop order. It turns out that these corrections can be entirely expressed by those of the single particle density of states.  相似文献

We obtain non-tangential boundary estimates for the Dirichlet eigenfunctions n and their gradients {n } for a class of planar domains with fractal boundaries. This class includes the quasidiscs and, in particular, snowflake-type domains. When applied to the case when is the Koch snowflake domain, one of our main results states that {1()} tends to or 0 as approaches certain types of boundary points (where 1 > 0 denotes the ground state eigenfunction of the Dirichlet Laplacian on ). More precisely, let Ob (resp., Ac) denote the set of boundary points which are vertices of obtuse (resp., acute) angles in an inner polygonal approximation of the snowflake curve . Then given Ob (resp., Ac), we show that {1()} (resp., 0) as tends to in within a cone based at . Moreover, we show that blowup of {1} also occurs at all boundary points in a Cantor-type set. These results have physical relevance to the damping of waves by fractal coastlines, as pointed out by Sapovalet al. in their experiments on the Koch drum.Research partially supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant DMS-9207098.  相似文献

The complicated line structure of the fundamental absorption edge and the effect of magneto-optical oscillations (which are general properties of crystals) open up good possibilities for the study of band structure and exciton states. From a survey of the facts observed lately it follows that the real existence of the exciton is almost certain although no experiment has yet been performed, which would provide direct experimental proof of its motion in the crystal. The evidence of the motion of excitons in the crystal can be determined from effects based on spatial dispersion effects. The observed optical anisotropy of absorption in a Cu2O cubic crystal (due to spatial dispersion) and the quadrupole character of the exciton linen=1 confirm the motion of exciton through the crystal. The fine structure of the spectral curve for photoconductivity (an effect that is also common to all crystals), which is directly connected with the exciton absorption structure, also testifies to the motion of excitons. The exciton structure of the absorption edge and also the connected effect of edge emission enable the band structure and its splitting to be studied. The determination of the splitting of the exciton lines and edge of continuous absorption under the influence of oriented elastic deformation and the study of the state of polarization of the split components provides a new method for the study of band structure. The study of the Zeeman effect for lines of exciton, absorption in crystals can supply data on the exciton motion and on the complicated band structure in crystals. Special detailed data on the band structure can be obtained from studies in polarized light. From the effect of magneto-optical oscillations we can decide with great exactness the band width of the forbidden zone and obtain data which are in good agreement with those obtained by other methods.

Slow production via dd-CF using a two-layer arrangement is investigated. To determine its feasibility, experimental measurements are now in progress using the muonic X-ray detection method. The following experimental steps are being considered: (1) measurement of the number of stopped inside a solid H2/D2 layer by detecting p K X-rays, (2) hot d emission detection by placing a secondary target at a distance of 10–30 mm from the layer and by detecting specific delayed X-rays, (3) measurement of the disappearance of d emission as the added D2 layer is increased, (4) dd-CF measurement by detecting fusion protons, and (5) slow emission detection. Results of the initial test experiment are presented.  相似文献
