In this note, we show that each fragmentable space introduced by Jayne and Rogers in 1985 is of class which was introduced by Kenderov in 1984. Our example shows that a space which is of class may not be a fragmentable space.

The aim of this paper is to show that there are no piecewise linear maps of type . For this purpose we use the fact that any piecewise monotone map of type has an infinite -limit set which is a subset of a doubling period solenoid. Then we prove that piecewise linear maps cannot have any doubling period solenoids.

A mapping between Banach spaces is said to be polynomially continuous if its restriction to any bounded set is uniformly continuous for the weak polynomial topology. A Banach space has property (RP) if given two bounded sequences , we have that for every polynomial on whenever for every polynomial on ; i.e., the restriction of every polynomial on to each bounded set is uniformly sequentially continuous for the weak polynomial topology. We show that property (RP) does not imply that every scalar valued polynomial on must be polynomially continuous.

The class contains all separable compact spaces, all compact spaces of weight at most and all perfectly normal compact spaces.

Oversteegen and Tymchatyn proved that homeomorphism groups of positive dimensional Menger compacta are -dimensional by proving that almost -dimensional spaces are at most -dimensional. These homeomorphism groups are almost -dimensional and at least -dimensional by classical results of Brechner and Bestvina. In this note we prove that almost -dimensional spaces for are -dimensional. As a corollary we answer in the affirmative an old question of R. Duda by proving that every hereditarily locally connected, non-degenerate, separable, metric space is -dimensional.

In this paper we study some structural and geometric properties of the quotient Banach spaces , where is an arbitrary set, is an Orlicz function, is the corresponding Orlicz space on and , being the ideal of elements with finite support. The results we obtain here extend and complete the ones obtained by Leonard and Whitfield (Rocky Mountain J. Math. 13 (1983), 531-539). We show that is not a dual space, that , if for every , that has no smooth points, that it cannot be renormed equivalently with a strictly convex or smooth norm, that is a Grothendieck space, etc.

In this paper (weakly) separating maps between spaces of bounded continuous functions over a nonarchimedean field are studied. It is proven that the behaviour of these maps when is not locally compact is very different from the case of real- or complex-valued functions: in general, for -compact spaces and , the existence of a (weakly) separating additive map implies that and are homeomorphic, whereas when dealing with real-valued functions, this result is in general false, and we can just deduce the existence of a homeomorphism between the Stone-Cech compactifications of and . Finally, we also describe the general form of bijective weakly separating linear maps and deduce some automatic continuity results.

We define a group structure on the set of compact ``minimal' paths in . We classify all finitely generated subgroups of this group : they are free products of free abelian groups and surface groups. Moreover, each such group occurs in . The subgroups of isomorphic to surface groups arise from certain topological -forms on the corresponding surfaces. We construct examples of such -forms for cohomology classes corresponding to certain eigenvectors for the action on cohomology of a pseudo-Anosov diffeomorphism. Using we construct a non-polygonal tiling problem in , that is, a finite set of tiles whose corresponding tilings are not equivalent to those of any set of polygonal tiles. The group has applications to combinatorial tiling problems of the type: given a set of tiles and a region , can be tiled by translated copies of tiles in ?

For (positive) definite surfaces in there is a canonical choice of a centroaffine normal plane bundle, which induces a centroaffine invariant Ricci-symmetric connection . We classify all surfaces in with planar -geodesics. It turns out that the resulting class of surfaces is umbilical with projectively flat induced connection and flat normal plane bundle.

This article is a continuation of a paper of the first author [V. Ferenczi, Uniqueness of complex structure and real hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces, Adv. Math. 213 (1) (2007) 462–488] about complex structures on real Banach spaces. We define a notion of even infinite-dimensional real Banach space, and prove that there exist even spaces, including HI or unconditional examples from [V. Ferenczi, Uniqueness of complex structure and real hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces, Adv. Math. 213 (1) (2007) 462–488] and C(K) examples due to Plebanek [G. Plebanek, A construction of a Banach space C(K) with few operators, Topology Appl. 143 (2004) 217–239]. We extend results of [V. Ferenczi, Uniqueness of complex structure and real hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces, Adv. Math. 213 (1) (2007) 462–488] relating the set of complex structures up to isomorphism on a real space to a group associated to inessential operators on that space, and give characterizations of even spaces in terms of this group. We also generalize results of [V. Ferenczi, Uniqueness of complex structure and real hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces, Adv. Math. 213 (1) (2007) 462–488] about totally incomparable complex structures to essentially incomparable complex structures, while showing that the complex version of a space defined by S. Argyros and A. Manoussakis [S. Argyros, A. Manoussakis, An indecomposable and unconditionally saturated Banach space, Studia Math. 159 (1) (2003) 1–32] provides examples of essentially incomparable complex structures which are not totally incomparable.  相似文献
