Let m, n be positive integers. Suppose that G is a residually finite group in which for every element x ∈ G there exists a positive integer q = q(x) ≤ m such that xq is left n-Engel. We show that G is locally virtually nilpotent. Further, let w be a multilinear commutator and G a residually finite group in which for every product of at most 896 w-values x there exists a positive integer q = q(x) dividing m such that xq is left n-Engel. Then w(G) is locally virtually nilpotent.  相似文献

We consider proper Klein surfaces X of algebraic genus p ≥ 2, having an automorphism φ of prime order n with quotient space X/(φ) of algebraic genus q. These Klein surfaces axe called q-n-gonal surfaces and they are n-sheeted covers of surfaces of algebraic genus q. In this paper we extend the results of the already studied cases n ≤ 3 to this more general situation. Given p ≥ 2, we obtain, for each prime n, the (admissible) values q for which there exists a q-n-gonal surface of algebraic genus p. Furthermore, for each p and for each admissible q, it is possible to check all topological types of q-n-gonal surfaces with algebraic genus p. Several examples are given: q-pentagonal surfaces and q-n-gonal bordered surfaces with topological genus g = 0, 1.  相似文献

In this article, we introduce a new method for manufacturing harmonic morphisms from semi-Riemannian manifolds. This is employed to yield a variety of new examples from the compact Lie groups SO(n), SU(n) and Sp(n) equipped with their standard Riemannian metrics. We develop a duality principle and show how this can be used to construct the first known examples of harmonic morphisms from the non-compact Lie groups , SU *(2n), , SO *(2n), SO(p, q), SU(p, q) and Sp(p, q) equipped with their standard dual semi-Riemannian metrics.   相似文献

We study dynamical aspects of the q‐state Potts model on an n × n box at its critical βc(q). Heat‐bath Glauber dynamics and cluster dynamics such as Swendsen–Wang (that circumvent low‐temperature bottlenecks) are all expected to undergo “critical slowdowns” in the presence of periodic boundary conditions: the inverse spectral gap, which in the subcritical regime is O(1), should at criticality be polynomial in n for 1 < q ≤ 4, and exponential in n for q > 4 in accordance with the predicted discontinuous phase transition. This was confirmed for q = 2 (the Ising model) by the second author and Sly, and for sufficiently large q by Borgs et al. Here we show that the following holds for the critical Potts model on the torus: for q=3, the inverse gap of Glauber dynamics is nO(1); for q = 4, it is at most nO(log n); and for every q > 4 in the phase‐coexistence regime, the inverse gaps of both Glauber dynamics and Swendsen‐Wang dynamics are exponential in n. For free or monochromatic boundary conditions and large q, we show that the dynamics at criticality is faster than on the torus (unlike the Ising model where free/periodic boundary conditions induce similar dynamical behavior at all temperatures): the inverse gap of Swendsen‐Wang dynamics is exp(no(1)). © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

In this article, we prove a conjecture of J. G. Thompson for the finite simple group 2 D n (q). More precisely, we show that every finite group G with the property Z(G) = 1 and N(G) = N(2 D n (q)) is necessarily isomorphic to 2 D n (q). Note that N(G) is the set of lengths of conjugacy classes of G.  相似文献

We study directional maximal operators on ?n with smooth densities. We prove that if the classical directional maximal operator in a given set of directions is weak type (1, 1), then the corresponding smooth‐density maximal operator in that set of directions will be bounded on Lq for q suitably large, depending on the order of the stationary points of the density function. In contrast to the classical case, if q is too small, the smooth density operator need not be bounded on Lq. Improving upon previously known results, we also establish that if the density function has only finitely many extreme points, each of finite order, then any maximal operator in a finite sum of diadic directions is bounded on all Lq for q > 1 (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We show that a suitable 2-dimensional linear system of Hermitian curves of PG(2,q 2) defines a model for the Desarguesian plane PG(2,q). Using this model we give the following group-theoretic characterization of the classical unitals. A unital in PG(2,q 2) is classical if and only if it is fixed by a linear collineation group of order 6(q + 1)2 that fixes no point or line in PG(2,q 2).  相似文献

The degree graph Δ(G) is the graph whose set of vertices is the set of primes that divide degrees in cd (G), with an edge between p and q if pq divides a for some degree a ? cd (G). We describe a method to determine up to isomorphism the groups of order q n · p for a fixed prime-power q n and indeterminate prime pq. We report on the explicit construction of all groups of order 2 n · p for n ≤ 8 and 3 n · p for n ≤ 6. In particular, we show that there are 1 090 235 groups of order 768.  相似文献

Abstract

Let G a simple group of type 2 B 2(q) or 2 G 2(q), where q is an odd power of 2 or 3, respectively. The main goal of this paper is to determine the multiplicity free permutation representations of G and A ≤ Aut(G) where A is a subgroup containing a copy of G. Let B be a Borel subgroup of G. If G = 2 B 2(q) we show that there is only one non-trivial multiplicity free permutation representation, namely the representation of G associated to the action on G/B. If G = 2 G 2(q) we show that there are exactly two such non-trivial representations, namely the representations of G associated to the action on G/B and the action on G/M, where M = UC with U the maximal unipotent subgroup of B and C the unique subgroup of index 2 in the maximal split torus of B. The multiplicity free permutation representations of A correspond to the actions on A/H where H is isomorphic to a subgroup containing B if G = 2 B 2(q), and containing M if G = 2 G 2(q). The problem of determining the multiplicity free representations of the finite simple groups is important, for example, in the classification of distance-transitive graphs.  相似文献

Abstract

Let G = GL n (q) be the general linear group over a finite field 𝔽 q with q elements. We call a Gel'fand–Graev module to be the module which affords the Gel'fand–Graev character defined in Definition I.1. It is known that every cuspidal module of G is isomorphic to a (unique) direct summand of a Gel'fand–Graev module. In this article, we investigate a certain endomorphism so that each irreducible cuspidal module is contained in a certain eigenspace corresponding to the cuspidal character. Furthermore, we determine the eigenvalue of that endomorphism by using character theory of finite general linear group.  相似文献

We prove that for qC? not a nontrivial root of unity any symmetric invariant 2-cocycle for a completion of Uqg is the coboundary of a central element. Equivalently, a Drinfeld twist relating the coproducts on completions of Uqg and Ug is unique up to coboundary of a central element. As an application we show that the spectral triple we defined in an earlier paper for the q-deformation of a simply connected semisimple compact Lie group G does not depend on any choices up to unitary equivalence.  相似文献

Motivated by the equivalence of the strict semimonotonicity property of the matrix A and the uniqueness of the solution to the linear complementarity problem LCP(A,q) for qR + n , we study the strict semimonotonicity (SSM) property of linear transformations on Euclidean Jordan algebras. Specifically, we show that, under the copositive condition, the SSM property is equivalent to the uniqueness of the solution to LCP(L,q) for all q in the symmetric cone K. We give a characterization of the uniqueness of the solution to LCP(L,q) for a Z transformation on the Lorentz cone ℒ+ n . We show that large positive solutions exist for the semilinear elliptic equation Δu = p(x)u α + q(x)v β on bounded domains in R n , n ≥ 3, for the superlinear case 0 < α ≤ β, β > 1, but not the sublinear case 0 < α ≤ β ≤ 1. We also show that entire large positive solutions exist for both the superlinear and sublinear cases provided the nonnegative continuous functions p and q satisfy certain decay conditions at infinity. Existence and nonexistence of entire bounded solutions are established as well.  相似文献

We study asymptotically fast multiplication algorithms for matrix pairs of arbitrary di- mensions, and optimize the exponents of their arithmetic complexity bounds. For a large class of input matrix pairs, we improve the known exponents. We also show some applications of our results:(i) we decrease from O(n~2 n~(1 o)(1)logq)to O(n~(1.9998) n~(1 o(1))logq)the known arithmetic complexity bound for the univariate polynomial factorization of degree n over a finite field with q elements; (ii) we decrease from 2.837 to 2.7945 the known exponent of the work and arithmetic processor bounds for fast deterministic(NC)parallel evaluation of the determinant, the characteristic polynomial, and the inverse of an n×n matrix, as well as for the solution to a nonsingular linear system of n equations; (iii)we decrease from O(m~(1.575)n)to O(m~(1.5356)n)the known bound for computing basic solutions to a linear programming problem with m constraints and n variables.  相似文献
