Harmonics-to-Noise Ratio: An Index of Vocal Aging   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Distinguishing between vocal changes that occur with normal aging and those that are associated with disease is an important goal of research in voice. Several acoustic measures have been used in an attempt to illuminate the integrity of the vocal mechanism, including harmonics-to-noise ratio (HNR), jitter, and fundamental frequency (F0). HNR is a measure that quantifies the amount of additive noise in the voice signal; jitter reflects the periodicity of vocal fold vibration. In this study, measures of HNR, jitter and F0 were used to compare vocal function in three groups of normally speaking women: young adults, middle-aged adults, and elderly adults. Significant differences in HNR emerged between the elderly women and the other two groups. F0 differences were also apparent between the elderly group and the two younger groups; there were no significant differences in jitter between the three groups. HNR was found to be a more sensitive index of vocal function than jitter. The significant lowering of HNR evident in the elderly speakers may be attributable in part to medications taken by the majority of these elderly subjects.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the acoustic characteristics of children's speech and voices that account for listeners' ability to identify gender. In Experiment I, vocal recordings and gross physical measurements of 4-, 8-, 12-, and 16-year olds were taken (10 girls and 10 boys per age group). The speech sample consisted of seven nondiphthongal vowels of American English (/ae/ "had," /E/ "head," /i/ "heed," /I/ "hid," /a/ "hod," /inverted v/ "hud," and /u/ "who'd") produced in the carrier phrase, "Say /hVd/ again." Fundamental frequency (f0) and formant frequencies (F1, F2, F3) were measured from these syllables. In Experiment II, 20 adults rated the syllables produced by the children in Experiment I based on a six-point gender rating scale. The results from these experiments indicate (1) vowel formant frequencies differentiate gender for children as young as four years of age, while formant frequencies and f0 differentiate gender after 12 years of age, (2) the relationship between gross measures of physical size and vocal characteristics is apparent for at least 12- and 16-year olds, and (3) listeners can identify gender from the speech and voice of children as young as four years of age, and with respect to young children, listeners appear to base their gender ratings on vowel formant frequencies. The findings are discussed in relation to the development of gender identity and its perceptual representation in speech and voice.  相似文献

Using a closed-set speech recognition paradigm thought to be heavily influenced by informational masking, auditory selective attention was measured in 38 children (ages 4-16 years) and 8 adults (ages 20-30 years). The task required attention to a monaural target speech message that was presented with a time-synchronized distracter message in the same ear. In some conditions a second distracter message or a speech-shaped noise was presented to the other ear. Compared to adults, children required higher target/distracter ratios to reach comparable performance levels, reflecting more informational masking in these listeners. Informational masking in most conditions was confirmed by the fact that a large proportion of the errors made by the listeners were contained in the distracter message(s). There was a monotonic age effect, such that even the children in the oldest age group (13.6-16 years) demonstrated poorer performance than adults. For both children and adults, presentation of an additional distracter in the contralateral ear significantly reduced performance, even when the distracter messages were produced by a talker of different sex than the target talker. The results are consistent with earlier reports from pure-tone masking studies that informational masking effects are much larger in children than in adults.  相似文献

Disruption of auditory feedback such as masking has been shown to influence vocal production. A reliable finding is an increase in intensity level; an increase in fundamental frequency (F0) is a less robust finding. Research is lacking concerning the effects of auditory masking on measures of phonatory stability such as jitter and harmonics-to-noise ratio (HNR). This study investigated changes in intensity, F0, jitter, and HNR in 22 normally speaking college aged women. Subjects produced the vowel /a/ under three conditions: no masking level (0-dB ML), 50-dB ML, and 80-dB ML. Significant differences between conditions emerged for intensity; means for the other measures were not significantly different. Intraindividual differences between conditions for each variable are discussed in the framework of auditory versus kinesthetic feedback.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether children give more perceptual weight than do adults to dynamic spectral cues versus static cues. Listeners were 10 children between the ages of 3;8 and 4;1 (mean 3;11) and ten adults between the ages of 23;10 and 32;0 (mean 25;11). Three experimental stimulus conditions were presented, with each containing stimuli of 30 ms duration. The first experimental condition consisted of unchanging formant onset frequencies ranging in value from frequencies for [i] to those for [a], appropriate for a bilabial stop consonant context. The second two experimental conditions consisted of either an [i] or [a] onset frequency with a 25 ms portion of a formant transition whose trajectory was toward one of a series of target frequencies ranging from those for [i] to those for [a]. Results indicated that the children attended differently than the adults on both the [a] and [i] formant onset frequency cue to identify the vowels. The adults gave more equal weight to the [i]-onset and [a]-onset dynamic cues as reflected in category boundaries than the children did. For the [i]-onset condition, children were not as confident compared to adults in vowel perception, as reflected in slope analyses.  相似文献

The harmonics-to-noise ratio (HNR) of the voiced speech signal has implicitly been used to infer information regarding the turbulent noise level at the glottis. However, two problems exist for inferring glottal noise attributes from the HNR of the speech wave form: (i) the measure is fundamental frequency (f0) dependent for equal levels of glottal noise, and (ii) any deviation from signal periodicity affects the ratio, not just turbulent noise. An alternative harmonics-to-noise ratio formulation [glottal related HNR (GHNR')] is proposed to overcome the former problem. In GHNR' a mean over the spectral range of interest of the HNRs at specific harmonic/between-harmonic frequencies (expressed in linear scale) is calculated. For the latter issue [(ii)] two spectral tilt measures are shown, using synthesis data, to be sensitive to glottal noise while at the same time being comparatively insensitive to other glottal aperiodicities. The theoretical development predicts that the spectral tilt measures reduce as noise levels increase. A conventional HNR estimator, GHNR' and two spectral tilt measures are applied to a data set of 13 pathological and 12 normal voice samples. One of the tilt measures and GHNR' are shown to provide statistically significant differentiating power over a conventional HNR estimator.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to investigate kinematic characteristics of the speech of children and adults under three speaking conditions. The effects of requiring subjects to produce speech stimuli were studied as they spoke: in a normal manner; at a faster than normal rate; and while holding a bite block between their molars to restrict mandibular movement. Using a strain gauge monitoring system, superior-inferior lip and jaw movement data were collected from 24 subjects--six in each of three groups of normally developing children and an adult control group. For the normal condition, it was found that net peak velocity (i.e., the sum of the peak velocities of the individual articulators) was quite comparable among the three groups of children and the adults. Net peak velocity increased significantly for all four groups of subjects when they spoke at a fast rate, but it did not increase significantly in the bite block condition. For most measures, there were typically no differences in peak velocity across the various speaking conditions when comparing the three groups of children to one another. In general, articulatory displacement data showed patterns quite similar to those of the peak velocity data. In addition to the displacement and peak velocity data, pilot data are discussed concerning temporal properties of articulatory phases and also concerning maximum, nonspeech articulatory gestures.  相似文献

The focus of this study was the release from informational masking that could be obtained in a speech task by viewing a video of the target talker. A closed-set speech recognition paradigm was used to measure informational masking in 23 children (ages 6-16 years) and 10 adults. An audio-only condition required attention to a monaural target speech message that was presented to the same ear with a time-synchronized distracter message. In an audiovisual condition, a synchronized video of the target talker was also presented to assess the release from informational masking that could be achieved by speechreading. Children required higher target/distracter ratios than adults to reach comparable performance levels in the audio-only condition, reflecting a greater extent of informational masking in these listeners. There was a monotonic age effect, such that even the children in the oldest age group (12-16.9 years) demonstrated performance somewhat poorer than adults. Older children and adults improved significantly in the audiovisual condition, producing a release from informational masking of 15 dB or more in some adult listeners. Audiovisual presentation produced no informational masking release for the youngest children. Across all ages, the benefit of a synchronized video was strongly associated with speechreading ability.  相似文献

Speech production by children with cochlear implants (CIs) is generally less intelligible and less accurate on a phonemic level than that of normally hearing children. Research has reported that children with CIs produce less acoustic contrast between phonemes than normally hearing children, but these studies have included correct and incorrect productions. The present study compared the extent of contrast between correct productions of /s/ and /∫/ by children with CIs and two comparison groups: (1) normally hearing children of the same chronological age as the children with CIs and (2) normally hearing children with the same duration of auditory experience. Spectral peaks and means were calculated from the frication noise of productions of /s/ and /∫/. Results showed that the children with CIs produced less contrast between /s/ and /∫/ than normally hearing children of the same chronological age and normally hearing children with the same duration of auditory experience due to production of /s/ with spectral peaks and means at lower frequencies. The results indicate that there may be differences between the speech sounds produced by children with CIs and their normally hearing peers even for sounds that adults judge as correct.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: The peri-adolescent period is a crucial developmental moment of transition from childhood to emergent adulthood. The present report analyses the differences in Power Spectrum (PS) of the Electroencephalogram (EEG) between late childhood (24 children between 8 and 13 years old) and young adulthood (24 young adults between 18 and 23 years old). RESULTS: The narrow band analysis of the Electroencephalogram was computed in the frequency range of 0--20 Hz. The analysis of mean and variance suggested that six frequency ranges presented a different rate of maturation at these ages, namely: low delta, delta-theta, low alpha, high alpha, low beta and high beta. For most of these bands the maturation seems to occur later in anterior sites than posterior sites. Correlational analysis showed a lower pattern of correlation between different frequencies in children than in young adults, suggesting a certain asynchrony in the maturation of different rhythms. The topographical analysis revealed similar topographies of the different rhythms in children and young adults. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) demonstrated the same internal structure for the Electroencephalogram of both age groups. Principal Component Analysis allowed to separate four subcomponents in the alpha range. All these subcomponents peaked at a lower frequency in children than in young adults. CONCLUSIONS: The present approaches complement and solve some of the incertitudes when the classical brain broad rhythm analysis is applied. Children have a higher absolute power than young adults for frequency ranges between 0-20 Hz, the correlation of Power Spectrum (PS) with age and the variance age comparison showed that there are six ranges of frequencies that can distinguish the level of EEG maturation in children and adults. The establishment of maturational order of different frequencies and its possible maturational interdependence would require a complete series including all the different ages.  相似文献

Changes in magnitude and variability of duration, fundamental frequency, formant frequencies, and spectral envelope of children's speech are investigated as a function of age and gender using data obtained from 436 children, ages 5 to 17 years, and 56 adults. The results confirm that the reduction in magnitude and within-subject variability of both temporal and spectral acoustic parameters with age is a major trend associated with speech development in normal children. Between ages 9 and 12, both magnitude and variability of segmental durations decrease significantly and rapidly, converging to adult levels around age 12. Within-subject fundamental frequency and formant-frequency variability, however, may reach adult range about 2 or 3 years later. Differentiation of male and female fundamental frequency and formant frequency patterns begins at around age 11, becoming fully established around age 15. During that time period, changes in vowel formant frequencies of male speakers is approximately linear with age, while such a linear trend is less obvious for female speakers. These results support the hypothesis of uniform axial growth of the vocal tract for male speakers. The study also shows evidence for an apparent overshoot in acoustic parameter values, somewhere between ages 13 and 15, before converging to the canonical levels for adults. For instance, teenagers around age 14 differ from adults in that, on average, they show shorter segmental durations and exhibit less within-subject variability in durations, fundamental frequency, and spectral envelope measures.  相似文献

Children between the ages of 4 and 7 and adults were tested in free field on speech intelligibility using a four-alternative forced choice paradigm with spondees. Target speech was presented from front (0 degrees); speech or modulated speech-shaped-noise competitors were either in front or on the right (90 degrees). Speech reception thresholds were measured adaptively using a three-down/one-up algorithm. The primary difference between children and adults was seen in elevated thresholds in children in quiet and in all masked conditions. For both age groups, masking was greater with the speech-noise versus speech competitor and with two versus one competitor(s). Masking was also greater when the competitors were located in front compared with the right. The amount of masking did not differ across the two age groups. Spatial release from masking was similar in the two age groups, except for in the one-speech condition, when it was greater in children than adults. These findings suggest that, similar to adults, young children are able to utilize spatial and/or head shadow cues to segregate sounds in noisy environments. The potential utility of the measures used here for studying hearing-impaired children is also discussed.  相似文献

The third formant (F3) of /a/ recorded from 209 healthy children (104 male and 105 female; ages 3 to 12 years) and 40 adults (20 men and 20 women) was studied by spectral analysis. Contrary to the traditional concept, the results of this study showed that there is significant difference in voice F3 of /a/ between male and female children. This difference was found to begin to develop at the age of 3 years and became substantial by the age of 6 years. In this study, the value of F3 obtained from female children at the age of 6 years was unexpectedly higher than that from the male children at the same age, which indicates that there is a difference in timbre in small children of both sexes.  相似文献

In contrast to the availability of consonant confusion studies with adults, to date, no investigators have compared children's consonant confusion patterns in noise to those of adults in a single study. To examine whether children's error patterns are similar to those of adults, three groups of children (24 each in 4-5, 6-7, and 8-9 yrs. old) and 24 adult native speakers of American English (AE) performed a recognition task for 15 AE consonants in /ɑ/-consonant-/ɑ/ nonsense syllables presented in a background of speech-shaped noise. Three signal-to-noise ratios (SNR: 0, +5, and +10 dB) were used. Although the performance improved as a function of age, the overall consonant recognition accuracy as a function of SNR improved at a similar rate for all groups. Detailed analyses using phonetic features (manner, place, and voicing) revealed that stop consonants were the most problematic for all groups. In addition, for the younger children, front consonants presented in the 0 dB SNR condition were more error prone than others. These results suggested that children's use of phonetic cues do not develop at the same rate for all phonetic features.  相似文献

Most studies investigating the effect of sex hormones on the larynx and vocal folds focused on the voice quality of women either around menopause or during the menstrual cycle. To our knowledge, however, there have been no studies that investigated the effect of oral contraceptives on the female voice. In the present study five women who ingest oral contraceptives (pill group) and five women who do not (natural group) were recorded producing the vowels /i/ and /a/ repeatedly over a period of 40 days. Acoustic analyses were performed on these recordings including F0, amplitude, jitter, shimmer, and harmonic-to-noise ratio (HNR). Results indicated that jitter and shimmer values of the pill group were significantly lower than those of the natural group. No group differences were found for F0, amplitude, or HNR. In addition, the pill group demonstrated significantly smaller variance for all variables tested. The results suggest that oral contraceptives might increase voice stability associated with smaller hormonal changes. Thus the present study provides preliminary evidence of the effect of oral contraceptives on the female voice.  相似文献

Measurement of tissue spin lattice relaxation time (T(1)) has been used to characterize brain development in healthy children. Here we report the first study of brain T(1) in young children with sickle cell disease (SCD). The T(1) in 10 tissue samples was measured by established techniques; 46 SCD patients under the age of 4 years were compared to 267 controls, including 55 well children under the age of 4 years. A model was developed to predict the relationship between age and brain T(1) in controls, then we compared patient T(1) to healthy normal T(1). Most white matter and gray matter tissues in infant patients (<2 years old), had T(1) values significantly higher than normal. For example, 15.0% of patient caudate T(1) values were above the upper bound of the 95% confidence interval for controls, but only 2.5% of normal values are expected to be this high (p = 0.0003). Among infant patients, brain T(1) was significantly higher than normal in every tissue (p < 0.01) except cortical gray matter. However, patient T(1) values declined rapidly to values lower than normal by about age 4. Our findings imply that patients follow an abnormal developmental trajectory beginning early in infancy.  相似文献

Beginning at the age of about 14 months, eight children who lived in a rhotic dialect region of the United States were recorded approximately every 2 months interacting with their parents. All were recorded until at least the age of 26 months, and some until the age of 31 months. Acoustic analyses of speech samples indicated that these young children acquired [inverted r] production ability at different ages for [inverted r]'s in different syllable positions. The children, as a group, had started to produce postvocalic and syllabic [inverted r] in an adult-like manner by the end of the recording sessions, but were not yet showing evidence of having acquired prevocalic [inverted r]. Articulatory limitations of young children are posited as a cause for the difference in development of [inverted r] according to syllable position. Specifically, it is speculated that adult-like prevocalic [inverted r] production requires two lingual constrictions: one in the mouth, and the other in the pharynx, while postvocalic and syllabic [inverted r] requires only one oral constriction. Two lingual constrictions could be difficult for young children to produce.  相似文献

Thresholds for octave-band noises with center frequencies of 0.4, 1, 2, 4, and 10 kHz, and 1/3-octave-band noises with center frequencies of 10 and 20 kHz, were obtained from children 3-5 years of age and from a comparison group of adults. Thresholds for all frequencies decreased between 3 and 5 years of age. Thresholds decreased further between 5 years of age and adulthood, except for the 20-kHz stimulus, for which children had lower thresholds than adults. These results are discussed in terms of possible age-related changes in the mechanical properties of the ear and in the efficiency of neural coding.  相似文献

This study examined the degree to which masker-spectral variability contributes to children's susceptibility to informational masking. Listeners were younger children (5-7 years), older children (8-10 years), and adults (19-34 years). Masked thresholds were measured using a 2IFC, adaptive procedure for a 300-ms, 1000-Hz signal presented simultaneously with (1) broadband noise, (2) a random-frequency ten-tone complex, or (3) a fixed-frequency ten-tone complex. Maskers were presented at an overall level of 60 dB SPL. Thresholds were similar across age for the noise condition. Thresholds for most children were higher than for most adults, however, for both ten-tone conditions. The average difference in threshold between random and fixed ten-tone conditions was comparable across age, suggesting a similar effect of reducing masker-spectral variability in children and adults. Children appear more likely to be susceptible to informational masking than adults, however, both with and in the absence of masker-spectral variability. The addition of a masker fringe (delayed onset of signal relative to masker) provided a release from masking for fixed and random ten-tone conditions in all age groups, suggesting at least part of the masking observed for both ten-tone maskers was informational.  相似文献

Phonation threshold pressure has been defined as the minimum subglottalpressure to generate phonation. Previous research has indicated that children may habitually employ higher subglottal pressures than adults. In the present investigation sound pressure level (SPL) and subglottal pressures at different pitch levels were measured at and above phonation threshold in nine children. Phonation threshold values were scattered in reasonable agreement with Titzes' prediction, although a discrepancy was noted regarding the frequency dependence in some voices. At normal conversational loudness and loudest level of phonation the children's PS values were between two to four and four to eight times the predicted threshold values, respectively. At normal conversational loudness and habitual pitch subglottal pressures were lower than those previously observed for children, but similar to those found for female adults. The SPL in softest and loudest phonation were somewhat lower as compared to previous phonetogram data for children and for female adults. At normal loudness and habitual pitch the SPL values were similar to those of female adults. For a doubling of Ps mean SPL increased by 10.5 dB on the average.  相似文献
