An experimental programme has been carried out to obtain data for the isothermal swelling of dilute viscoelastic fluids based on the polyisobutylene-polybutene system. The fluid was thus a constant viscosity one and so the observed swell was predominantly due to elastic effects alone. To establish the experimental rig and procedure, preliminary results for the creeping flow of a Newtonian fluid, based on a polybutene, were acquired. The Newtonian results, showing a creeping flow swell of 13.8%, demonstrated that the rig and procedure were satisfactory for the formation of free, isothermal jets. The viscoelastic results were quite unexpected, showing that dilute elastic solutions can exhibit significant swelling despite the fact that the recoverable shear is small (S R < 0.1). These results qualitatively confirm a recent numerical study [1].  相似文献

Extrudate swell is a common phenomenon observed in the polymer extrusion industry. Accurate prediction of the dimensions of an extrudate is important for appropriate design of dies for profile extrusion applications. Prediction of extrudate swell has been challenging due to (i) difficulties associated with accurate representation of the constitutive behavior of polymer melts, and (ii) difficulties associated with the simulation of free surfaces, which requires special techniques in the traditionally used Eulerian framework. In a previous work we had argued that an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) based finite element formulation may have advantages in simulating free surface deformations such as in extrudate swell. In the present work we reinforce this argument by comparing our ALE simulations with experimental data on the extrudate swell of commercial grades of linear polyethylene (LLDPE) and branched polyethylene (LDPE). Rheological behavior of the polymers was characterized in shear and uniaxial extensional deformations, and the data was modeled using either the Phan–Thien Tanner (PTT) model or the eXtended Pom–Pom (XPP) model. Additionally, flow birefringence and pressure drop measurements were done using a 10:1 contraction–expansion (CE) slit geometry in a MultiPass Rheometer. Simulated pressure drop and contours of the principal stress difference were compared with experimental data and were found to match well. This provided an independent test for the accuracy of the ALE code and the constitutive equations for simulating a processing-like flow. The polymers were extruded from long (L/D = 30) and short (L/D = 10) capillaries dies at 190 °C. ALE simulations were performed for the same extrusion conditions and the simulated extrudate swell showed good agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

Numerical simulations have been undertaken for the benchmark problem of annular extrudate swell present in pipe extrusion and parison formation in blow molding. The finite element method (FEM) is used to provide numerical results for different inner/outer diameter ratios κ under steady-state conditions. The Herschel-Bulkley model of viscoplasticity is used with the Papanastasiou regularization, which reduces with appropriate parameter choices to the Bingham–Papanastasiou, power-law and Newtonian models. The present results provide the shape of the extrudate, and in particular the thickness and diameter swells, as a function of the dimensionless power-law index (in the case of pseudoplasticity) and the dimensionless yield stress (in the case of viscoplasticity). The pressures from the simulations have been used to compute the excess pressure losses in the system (exit correction). While shear-thinning leads to reduced swelling relative to the Newtonian values for all κ-values, the opposite is true for shear-thickening fluids, which exhibit considerable swelling. Viscoplasticity leads to decreased extrudate swell as the dimensionless yield stress goes from zero (Newtonian behaviour) to an asymptotic value of fully plastic behaviour. The exit correction decreases to zero with a decrease in the power-law index to zero and an increase in the dimensionless yield stress to its asymptotic limit. However, the decrease is not monotonic: for power-law fluids it has maxima in the range of power-law indices between 0.8 and 0.6, while for viscoplastic fluids it has maxima around Bingham number values of 5.  相似文献

The primary normal-stress difference,N 1, was determined in both steady and transient shear flow experiments for thermotropic copolyesters of 60 and 80 mole% p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHB) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET).N 1 was observed to be negative for the 80 mole% system at low shear rates and temperatures below 332 °C (a tensile stress, e.g. σ11 is taken here to be positive). At higher shear rates and for temperatures above 332 °C,N 1 was found to be positive. Values ofN 1 for the 60 mole% pHBA/PET system were always positive over the same range of shear rates. Although it is not certain as to the origin of the negative values, a probable cause is small density changes upon the inception of flow as well as the existence of a solid phase or some texture development in the melt. However, it is shown that it is thermodynamically admissible for liquid crystalline fluids to exhibit negative values ofN 1.  相似文献

The flow fields surrounding a sphere sedimenting through a liquid near a vertical wall are characterized using 3D stereoscopic particle-image velocimetry (PIV) experiments. Three different fluids, a Newtonian reference fluid, a constant (shear) viscosity Boger fluid, and a shear-thinning elastic fluid, are used to determine the effects of both elasticity and shear-thinning on the flow field. All three fluids have similar zero shear viscosities. The Weissenberg number is manipulated by varying the diameter and the composition of the ball. Significant differences are found for the different types of fluid, demonstrating both the influence of elasticity and shear-thinning on the velocity fields. In addition, the impact of the wall on the flow field is qualitatively different for each fluid. We find that the flow behind the sphere is strongly dependent on the fluid properties as well as the elasticity. Also, the presence of a negative wake is found for the shear-thinning fluid at high Weissenberg number (Wi > 1).  相似文献

In various attempts to relate the behaviour of highly-elastic liquids in complex flows to their rheometrical behaviour, obvious candidates for study have been the variation of shear viscosity with shear rate, the two normal stress differences N1 and N2, especially N1, the extensional viscosity, and the dynamic moduli G′ and G″. In this paper, we shall confine attention to ‘constant-viscosity’ Boger fluids, and, accordingly, we shall limit attention to N1, ηE, G′ and G″.We shall concentrate on the “splashing” problem (particularly that which arises when a liquid drop falls onto the free surface of the same liquid). Modern numerical techniques are employed to provide the theoretical predictions. We show that high ηE can certainly reduce the height of the so-called Worthington jet, thus confirming earlier suggestions, but other rheometrical influences (steady and transient) can also have a role to play and the overall picture may not be as clear as it was once envisaged. We argue that this is due in the main to the fact that splashing is a manifestly unsteady flow. To confirm this proposition, we obtain numerical simulations for the linear Jeffreys model.  相似文献

Compressible extrudate swell   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
There are few computations of polymer forming processes which include compressibility. Here we estimate the effect of compressibility in Newtonian and PTT fluids on extrudate swell and stick-flip flow. Changes of the order of a few per cent occur in swelling, which is in accord with expectations.  相似文献

The use of constant viscosity, highly elastic polymer solutions, so called Boger fluids, has been remarkably successful in elucidating the behavior of polymeric materials under flowing conditions. However, the behavior of these fluids is still complicated by many different physical processes occurring within a narrow window of observation time and applied shear rate. In this study, we investigate the long-time shear behavior of an ideal Boger fluid: a well characterized, athermal, dilute, binary solution of high molecular weight polystyrene in oligomeric polystyrene. Rheological measurements show that under an applied steady shear flow, this family of polymer solutions undergoes a transient decay of normal stresses on a timescale much longer than the polymer molecule's relaxation time. Rheological and flow visualization results demonstrate that the observed phenomenon is not caused by polymer degradation, phase separation, viscous heating, or secondary flows from elastic instabilities. Although the timescale is much shorter than that associated with polymer migration in the same solutions (MacDonald and Muller, 1996), the appearance of this phenomenon only at the rates where migration has been observed suggests that it may be a prerequisite for observing migration. In addition, we note that through sufficient preshearing of the sample, the normal stress decrease suppresses the elastic instability. These results show that there is considerable uncertainty in choosing the appropriate measure of the fluid relaxation time for consistently modeling the critical condition for the elastic instability, the decay of normal stresses, and the migration of polymer species.  相似文献

Viscoelastic solutions were ejected vertically downwards into air and various Newtonian fluids. The measured swell increased significantly when ejected into a liquid rather than air. The observed increase is considered a result of both bouyancy and drag forces on the solution. The following dimensions expression relating the ratio of the swell diameter in liquid and air DL/DA to the elastic shear compliance of the ejected solution Je was experimentally observed.(DL/DA)6-1=30(Δ?/?s)?12([g2η2N?s]13Je)35, where Δ? is the density difference between the extruded and Newtonian fluid, ?s is the solution density, g is the gravitational constant, and ηN is the Newtonian fluid viscosity. Thus with this expression a simple extrudate swell technique exists to estimate the elastic shear compliance of a viscoelastic solution.  相似文献

A quasi-static asymptotic analysis is employed to investigate the elastic effects of fluids on the shear viscosity of highly concentrated suspensions at low and high shear rates. First a brief discussion is presented on the difference between a quasi-static analysis and the periodic-dynamic approach. The critical point is based on the different order-of-contact time between particles. By considering the motions between a particle withN near contact point particles in a two-dimensional “cell” structure and incorporating the concept of shear-dependent maximum packing fraction reveals the structural evolution of the suspension under shear and a newly asymptotic framework is devised. In order to separate the influence of different elastic mechanisms, the second-order Rivlin-Ericksen fluid assumption for describing normal-stress coefficients at low shear rates and Harnoy's constitutive equation for accounting for the stress relaxation mechanism at high shear rates are employed. The derived formulation shows that the relative shear viscosity is characterized by a recoverable shear strain,S R at low shear rates if the second normal-stress difference can be neglected, and Deborah number,De, at high shear rates. The predicted values of the viscosities increase withS R , but decrease withDe. The role ofS R in the matrix is more pronounced than that ofDe. These tendencies are significant when the maximum packing fraction is considered to be shear-dependent. The results are consistent with that of Frankel and Acrivos in the case of a Newtonian suspension, except for when the different divergent threshhold is given as [1 ? (Φ/Φ m )1/2] ? 1.  相似文献

Summary The rheological properties of vinylon fiber suspensions in polymer solutions were studied in steady shear flow. Shear viscosity, first normal-stress difference, yield stress, relative viscosity, and other properties were discussed. Three kinds of flexible vinylon fibers of uniform length and three kinds of polymer solutions as mediums which exhibited remarkable non-Newtonian behaviors were employed. The shear viscosity and relative viscosity ( r ) increased with the fiber content and the aspect ratio, and depended upon the shear rate. Shear rate dependence of r was found only in the low shear rate region. This result was different from that of vinylon fiber suspensions in Newtonian fluids. The first normal-stress difference increased at first slightly with increasing fiber content but rather decreased and showed lower values for high content suspensions than that of the medium. A yield stress could be determined by using a modified equation of Casson type. The flow properties of the fiber suspensions depended on the viscosity of the medium in the suspensions under consideration. With 16 figures and 1 table  相似文献

Six samples of polypropylene produced by Montepolimeri were carefully characterized in dilute solution and studied, with a capillary extrusion rheometer, in large ranges of shear and temperature. The extrudate swelling behaviour is found to be regular as far as its shear stress and temperature dependence is concerned, but the influence of molecular weight is abnormal. With increasing molecular weight the amount of elastic recovery (as measured by the extrudate swell) decreases markedly and the shear modulusG (obtained from the data by making use of simplifying assumptions) appears to be an increasing function ofM w at all the shear stress investigated. No similar results appear to be reported in the literature.Presented in part at the VIIIth Intern. Congress on Rheology, Naples, September 1–5, 1980.  相似文献

We examine the torsional flow stability, to axisymmetric disturbances, of a variety of multimode and non-linear constitutive models in a bounded parallel plate geometry. The analysis is facilitated by the construction of a regular perturbation scheme in the ratio of polymer to total viscosity. As a model for Boger fluids this corresponds to the assumption that the Boger fluid is highly dilute. The consequent simplification provided by the perturbation scheme allows us to examine the effects of a discrete spectrum of relaxation times, shear thinning, second normal stress difference, and finite extensional viscosity on the torsional instability.  相似文献

Higashitani and Pritchard (H-P) carried out an analysis of the hole pressure (PH) for viscoelastic fluids which leads to expressions relating PH to the shear stress (σ), the wall shear stress (σw), and the normal stress differneces (N1 and N2). Although very good agreement their theory and experimental results has been obtained for several polymer solutions and three polymer melts, it is known that at least two of the key assumptions in the theory are violated. In this study flow birefingence has been used to determine the stress field (i.e. σ and the normal stress difference, σ11 — σ22) in the region of a slot placed perpendicular to the flow direction for a polystyrene melt. Values of σ and σ11 — σ22 were then used to evaluate the integrand in the expression relating Pe1 where Pe1 is the hole pressure measured at the base of the rectangular slot, σ and N1. Values of Pe1 evaluated using flow birefringence data agreed well with those obtained using the same integral expression and cone-and-plate values of N1 and σ, and with directly measured values of Pe1. This agreement occurred even though the stress field was found to be asymmetric around the centerline of the slot and with secondary flow in the slot. A detailed evaluation of the values of N1/2σ, which constitute the integral in the H-P theory, along the centerline of the slot revealed most of the contributions to the integral canceled in integrating from the base of the slot where σ is zero at the centerline of the slit-die. The main contributions to the integral occurred from the integration taken from the centerline of the slit-die to the upperdie  相似文献

The flow of a polystyrene Boger fluid through axisymmetric contraction–expansions having various contraction ratios (2≤β≤8) and varying degrees of re-entrant corner curvatures are studied experimentally over a large range of Deborah numbers. The ideal elastic fluid is dilute, monodisperse and well characterized in both shear and transient uniaxial extension. A large enhanced pressure drop above that of a Newtonian fluid is observed independent of contraction ratio and re-entrant corner curvature. Streak images, laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) and digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) are used to investigate the flow kinematics upstream of the contraction plane. LDV is used to measure velocity fluctuation in the mean flow field and to characterize a global elastic flow instability which occurs at large Deborah numbers. For a contraction ratio of β=2, a steady elastic lip vortex is observed while for contraction ratios of 4≤β≤8, no lip vortex is observed and a corner vortex is seen. Rounding the re-entrant corner leads to shifts in the onset of the flow transitions at larger Deborah numbers, but does not qualitatively change the overall structure of the flow field. We describe a simple rescaling of the deformation rate which incorporates the effects of lip curvature and allows measurements of vortex size, enhanced pressure drop and critical Deborah number for the onset of elastic instability to be collapsed onto master curves. Transient extensional rheology measurements are utilized to explain the significant differences in vortex growth pathways (i.e. elastic corner vortex versus lip vortex growth) observed between the polystyrene Boger fluids used in this research and polyisobutylene and polyacrylamide Boger fluids used in previous contraction flow experiments. We show that the role of contraction ratio on vortex growth dynamics can be rationalized by considering the dimensionless ratio of the elastic normal stress difference in steady shear flow to those in transient uniaxial extension. It appears that the differences in this normal stress ratio for different fluids at a given Deborah number arise from variations in solvent quality or excluded volume effects.  相似文献

Four constant viscosity, highly elastic fluids of different viscosity and elasticity levels are presented. The viscosity ranges from 4 × 10?3 to 5.0 Pa s and the Maxwell relaxation time varies from 0.09 to 4.5 s. The steady and dynamic shear properties are determined. These fluids comply with the requirements of the simple fluid theory except for theG′ andN 1/2 data where a slight deviation is observed. The results suggest the possibility of preparing a wide range of constant viscosity elastic fluids with specific values of viscosity and relaxation time by manipulating polymer molecular parameters as well as polymer concentration, solvent viscosity and salt addition. The effects of each of these parameters on the rheological behaviour are examined.  相似文献

A theory of extrudate swell for short, intermediate or long dies is presented. In our experiment, we consider that the swelling phenomenon is mainly due to the recoverable elongational strain induced by the converging flow at the die entrance, as well as by recoverable shear strain originating within the die. From these concepts, an equation has been derived for the quantitative prediction of extrudate swell from the elastic material properties such as the entrance pressure drop, the relaxation modulus and the recoverable shear strain. Excellent agreement is found between predicted and measured values of extrudate swell obtained on commercial polystyrene melt, using capillaries of length-to-diameter ratios ranging from 1 to 20 and in a wide range of shear rates.  相似文献

In the light of a new interpretation, we have studied the end effects for highly elastic-constant viscosity fluids commonly called Boger fluids. In terms of entrance effect only, the presence of primary normal-stress differences in absence of shear-thinning properties results in a decrease of the entrance correction below the Couette (Newtonian) value, whereas the total end correction can be substantially increased by an amount which is strongly dependent on the Weissenberg number or recoverable shear.  相似文献
