Traditionally, timbre has been defined as that perceptual attribute that differentiates two sounds when pitch and loudness are equal, and thus is a measure of dissimilarity. By such a definition, each voice possesses a set of timbres, and the ability to identify any voice or voice category across different pitch-loudness-vowel combinations must be due to an ability to "link" these timbres by abstracting the "timbre transformation," the manner in which timbre subtly changes across pitch and loudness for a specific voice or voice category. Using stimuli produced across the singing range by singers from different voice categories, this study sought to examine how timbre and pitch interact in the perception of dissimilarity in male singing voices. This study also investigated whether or not listener experience affects the perception of timbre as a function of pitch. The resulting multidimensional scaling (MDS) representations showed that for all stimuli and listeners, dimension 1 correlated with pitch, while dimension 2 correlated with spectral centroid and separated vocal stimuli into the categories baritone and tenor. Dimension 3 appeared highly idiosyncratic depending on the nature of the stimuli and on the experience of the listener. Inexperienced listeners appeared to rely more heavily on pitch in making dissimilarity judgments than did experienced listeners. The resulting MDS representations of dissimilarity across pitch provide a glimpse of the timbre transformation of voice categories across pitch.  相似文献

Experiments on disordered voice quality with multidimensional scaling (MDS) have resulted in solutions with low R-square and have failed to show consistent dimensions across different listeners. These findings have been suggested to indicate large individual differences in the perception of voice quality. However, these inconsistencies may originate from several factors, including random stimulus selection, instructions that encourage listeners to respond to global difference in pairs of voices, and noisy perceptual data. This experiment used MDS techniques to study individual differences in perception of breathiness. The voices in the experiment were selected to have a relatively wide variation in breathiness but only minimal variation in roughness, strain, and fundamental frequency. Additionally, listeners were instructed specifically to rate similarities in breathiness rather than judging global differences in voices, and several judgments from each listener were averaged to minimize noise in the data. It was hypothesized that these modifications would result in an MDS solution that accounted for greater variance in perceptual data than previously shown. Results show that averaging multiple responses from each listener increased the R-square from 45% to approximately 75%. The poor R-square and large individual differences in voice quality perception observed in past research may have partly resulted from the experimental procedures in previous studies. These findings suggest that individual differences in the perception of voice quality are not as large as previously thought, and a model of voice quality perception for an "average" listener may be a good representation for the general population.  相似文献

The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the relationship between undergraduate vocal music majors' diction acquisition abilities for singing in a nonnative language (as rated both by themselves and by their studio voice teachers) and their scores on an objective test of phonemic and stress perception. Ten students with varying levels of university voice training served as participants. The results showed significant negative correlations between each of the teachers' four ratings and the students' scores on the phonemic awareness subtest. In addition, 20% of the students demonstrated evidence of underdeveloped phonemic awareness skills, as indicated by their below average test performance. Considerable individual differences were also observed in the students' abilities to track phonemes within a sequence of phonemes, count and track syllables within a sequence of syllables, and track combinations of phoneme and syllable changes in sequence, as evidenced by subtest performance scores. These findings corroborate existing reports which indicate that approximately 30% of the population does not fully develop phonemic awareness skills in the absence of special training. The findings support the utility of this objective test of phonemic and stress perception as a means of identifying students who will have difficulty with diction acquisition, and point to possibilities for pretraining to improve their response to diction instruction.  相似文献

Objectives

The aim of this study was to look for visual subjective and objective parameters of vocal fold dynamics being capable of differentiating healthy from pathologic voices in daily clinical practice applying endoscopic high-speed digital imaging (HSI).

Study Design and Methods

Four hundred ninety-six datasets containing 80 healthy and 416 pathologic subjects (232 functional dysphonia (FD), 13 bilateral, and 171 unilateral vocal fold nerve paralysis) were analyzed retrospectively. Videos at 4000 Hz (256 × 256 pixel) were recorded during sustained phonation. Subjective parameters were visually evaluated and complemented by an analysis of objective parameters. Visual subjective parameters were mucosal wave, glottal closure type, glottal closure insufficiency (GI), asymmetries of the vocal folds, and phonovibrogram (PVG) symmetry. After image segmentation, objective parameters were computed: closed quotient, perturbation measures (PMs) of glottal area, and left-right asymmetry values.

Results

HSI evaluation enabled to distinguish healthy from pathologic voices. For visual subjective parameters, GI, symmetrical behavior, and PVG symmetry exhibited statistical significant differences. For 95% of the data, objective parameters could be computed. Among objective parameters, closed quotient, jitter, shimmer, harmonic-to-noise ratio, and signal-to-noise ratio for the glottal area function differentiated statistically significant normal from pathologic voices. Applying linear discriminant analysis by combining visual subjective and objective parameters, accurate classifications were made for 63.2% of the female and 87.5% of the male group for the three-class problem (healthy, FD, and unilateral vocal fold nerve paralysis).

Conclusion

Actual acoustically applied PMs can be transferred to clinical beneficial HSI analysis. Combining visual subjective and objective basic parameters succeeds in differentiating pathologic from healthy voices. The presented evaluation can easily be included into everyday clinical practice. However, further research is needed to broaden our understanding of the variability within and across healthy and pathologic vocal fold vibrations for diagnosing voice disorders and therapy control.  相似文献

This study was designed to investigate how variations in patterns of injection could improve the efficacy of botulinum toxin injections in relieving the symptoms of adductor spasmodic dysphonia. A total of 64 adductor spasmodic dysphonia patients who were injected using indirect laryngoscopic localization (for a total of 426 injections) were analyzed retrospectively using their own subjective data on duration of voice improvement, optimal voice improvement, breathiness side effects, and intervals between treatments. Injection to both the thyroarytenoid (TA) and the lateral cricoarytenoid (LCA) simultaneously gave the best voice results; the overall improvement from baseline was the longest lasting, and the period during which the voice was the best was the longest lasting. TA + LCA also gave the shortest duration of undesirable breathiness side effect. On the basis of these data, it seems reasonable to recommend that initial botulinum toxin therapy for adductor spasmodic dysphonia patients should be a single unilateral injection placed strategically at the posterior portion of the TA and directed toward the LCA so that both muscle groups are affected.  相似文献

本文对语音中元音和辅音的听觉感知研究进行综述。80多年前基于无意义音节的权威实验结果表明辅音对人的听感知更为重要,由于实验者在学术上的成就和权威性,这一结论成为了常识,直到近20年前基于自然语句的实验挑战了这个结论并引发了新一轮的研究。本文主要围绕元音和辅音对语音感知的相对重要性、元音和辅音的稳态信息和边界动态信息对语音感知的影响以及相关研究的潜在应用等进行较为系统的介绍,最后给出了总结与展望。  相似文献

There is only very limited information on the prevalence of voice disorders, particularly for the pediatric population. This study examined the prevalence of dysphonia in a large cohort of children (n = 7389) at 8 years of age. Data were collected within a large prospective epidemiological study and included a formal assessment by one of five research speech and language therapists as well as a parental report of their child's voice. Common risk factors that were also analyzed included sex, sibling numbers, asthma, regular conductive hearing loss, and frequent upper respiratory infection. The research clinicians identified a dysphonia prevalence of 6% compared with a parental report of 11%. Both measures suggested a significant risk of dysphonia for children with older siblings. Other measures were not in agreement between clinician and parental reports. The clinician judgments also suggested significant risk factors for sex (male) but not for any common respiratory or otolaryngological conditions that were analyzed. Parental report suggested significant risk factors with respect to asthma and tonsillectomy. These results are discussed in detail.  相似文献

Botulinum toxin in the treatment of recalcitrant mutational dysphonia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Mutational falsetto is the failure of the normal drop in vocal pitch at puberty. Voice therapy almost always achieves an appropriate pitch; however, in cases of failure, surgical treatment has also been recommended. We report a case of a 47-year-old man with an above-average fundamental frequency and a thin voice quality in the absence of any signs of androgen insufficiency. Laryngeal examination revealed atrophy of the vocalis muscle. Voice therapy was unsuccessful in achieving a stable voice. Injection of 15 units of botulinum toxin into each cricothyroid muscle initially resulted in aphonia, but the voice returned by 1 week. Average fundamental frequency was 84 Hz at 1 week, 104 Hz at 1 month, and 100 Hz at 1 year. We hypothesize that mutational dysphonia is an habitual dysfunction of the voice with inappropriate activation of the cricothyroid muscle and disuse of laryngeal adductor muscles. Temporary deactivation of the cricothyroid muscle enforces adoption of a more appropriate vocal mechanism. Botulinum toxin as an adjunct to voice therapy should be considered before surgical alteration of the glottis in patients with recalcitrant mutational falsetto.  相似文献

The vocal symptoms of spastic dysarthria and spasmodic dysphonia have many similar features. Botulinum toxin has been used effectively to treat spasmodic dysphonia. This study was designed to determine what vocal changes occur in an individual with spastic dysarthria following Botulinum toxin A injection into the thyroarytenoid muscles. Measures were obtained preinjection and three times postinjection. Acoustic and aerodynamic results were comparable to those reported for individuals with spasmodic dysphonia. The most marked change was increased DC airflow. Despite persistent breathiness, the participant reported great satisfaction with the result, particularly because of her more appropriate loudness. In addition, everyday listeners perceived significantly less listener burden and more relaxed and pleasant vocal quality postinjection.  相似文献

The mechanism and temporal characteristics of gloss perception are not entirely clear. In addition, the formulation for predicting gloss perception from photometric values has not been established. In the present study, we conducted an experiment to measure several temporal characteristics of gloss perception in order to clarify the mechanism. All stimuli were rendered as computer graphics with Phong and Lambert models to provide gloss perception to human observers. We measured perceptual glossiness with a magnitude estimation method and perceptual diffuse/specular reflectance of test stimuli with a matching method under several stimulus conditions, such as reflectance coefficients and stimulus duration. The results showed that the perceptual specular component and perceptual glossiness increase with decreasing stimulus duration. Finally, we proposed a formulation to predict perceptual glossiness as a function of stimulus duration.  相似文献
