This paper describes unique plasmonic characteristics of two dimensional (2D) crystalline sheets composed of homogeneous Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) fabricated by the Langmuir-Schaefer method at an air-water interface. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) band of the Ag nanosheet was tuned by changing the interparticle distance of AgNPs via the length of the organic capping molecules. Red shift of the LSPR band of the AgNPs sheet followed an exponential law against the interparticle distance in a similar manner to the previous reports of metal nanodisc pairs. However, the shift was much larger and less dependent on the interparticle separation gap. This phenomenon is reasonably interpreted as the long-range interaction of LSPR in the 2D sheet ('delocalized' LSPR) confirmed by simulation using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The FDTD simulation also revealed additional enhancement of local electric fields on the 2D sheet compared to those on the single or paired particles.  相似文献

Effects of changing the interparticle separation on the surface plasmon bands of ultrathin films of gold nanoparticles have been investigated by examining the interaction of alkanethiols of varying chain length on nanocrystalline gold films generated at the organic-aqueous interface. Adsorption of alkanethiols causes blue-shifts of the surface plasmon adsorption band, the magnitude of the shift being proportional to the chain length. The disordered nanocrystals thus created (lambdamax, 530 m) are in equilibrium with the ordered nanocrystals in the film (lambdamax, 700 m) as indicated by an isosbestic point around 600 nm. Long chain thiols disintegrate or disorder the gold films more effectively, as demonstrated by the increased population of the thiol-capped gold nanocrystals in solution. The rate of interaction of the thiols with the film decreases with the decreasing chain length. The effect of an alkanethiol on the spectrum of the gold film is specific, in that the effects with long and short chains are reversible. The changes in the plasmon band of gold due to interparticle separation can be satisfactorily modeled on the basis of the Maxwell-Garnett formalism. Spectroscopic studies, augmented by calorimetric measurements, suggest that the interaction of alkanethiols involves two steps, the first step being the exothermic gold film-thiol interaction and the second step includes the endothermic disordering process followed by further thiol capping of isolated gold particles.  相似文献

Irradiation of UV light to the solution of gold nanoparticles modified with thymine units resulted in the formation of aggregates comprising chemical cross-linking gold nanoparticles through the photodimerization of the thymine units. Transmission electron microscopy and UV-visible absorption measurement showed the aggregates consisting of the gold nanoparticles. The effect of thymine unit density on the nanoparticle surface and the concentration of the gold nanoparticles in solution to the aggregation process were studied by UV-visible absorption measurement.  相似文献

The size of gold nanoparticle aggregates was controlled by manipulating the interparticle interaction. To manipulate the interparticle interaction of gold nanoparticles prepared by citrate reduction, we applied the substitutive adsorption of benzyl mercaptan on the particle surface in the absence of the cross-linking effect. Various experimental techniques such as UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, quasi-elastic light scattering, and zeta-potential measurement were used to characterize the nanoparticle aggregates. Our results suggest that the replacement of the trivalent citrate ions adsorbed on the nanoparticle surface with monovalent benzyl mercaptan ions should destabilize the particles, causing aggregation and hence the increase in the size of nanoparticle aggregates. These experimental results were successfully rationalized by the classical DLVO (Derjaguin-Landau-Vervey-Overbeek) theory that describes the interparticle interaction and colloidal stability in solution. Our findings suggest that the control of surface potential is crucial in the design of stable gold nanoparticle aggregates.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a convenient and reliable method to organize small gold nanoparticles (d(CORE) = 1.5 nm) into linear chains with precisely controlled interparticle spacing over a range of 1.5-2.8 nm through biomolecular nanolithography. Controlling the feature separations of 1 to a few nanometers with angstrom-level precision is a key requirement in electronic and optical applications of nanostructures to tune the properties of the nanostructures and manipulate the interactions between neighboring structures. Here, chains are formed in solution by utilizing functional-group-directed self-assembly to organize ligand-stabilized gold nanoparticles onto DNA templates. The spacing between neighboring nanoparticles can be controlled chemically and tuned at the molecular level by utilizing nanoparticles possessing ligand shells of varying thickness to achieve angstrom-level resolution at spacings of 1.5, 2.1, and 2.8 nm. The small standard deviation (< or = 20%) in the values for the interparticle spacing illustrates the reproducibility of the approach. Because the interparticle spacing is enforced by the ligand shell rather than the scaffold, the spacing is uniform even in nonlinear sections of the chain. We further show that the assembly process is robust and produces extended linear nanoparticle chains of up to 1 microm in length and a total coverage of > 90%. All structures and interparticle spacings were analyzed using transmission electron microscopy. Our results demonstrate the potential of scaffold-assisted assembly approaches for patterning features with tunable dimensions on a length scale that is important for future applications of these materials in nanoscale electronics and optics.  相似文献

Aggregate formation and collision efficiency in differential settling   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A new method of application of Stokesian dynamics, which can efficiently simulate movements of up to 500 particles with interparticle interactions in reasonable computational times, has been developed for the purpose of investigating particle-cluster aggregation in aqueous systems. The method is applied to monodisperse non-Brownian spherical particles aggregating in differential settling, while repulsive colloidal interaction is presumed to be negligible, so that a minimum separation distance can represent the attractive van der Waals force. The final aggregates formed by this algorithm, composed of 300 primary particles, have a common fractal dimension of approximately 2.0. The computed collision efficiency, defined as the product of a global and a capture efficiency, is about 5.77x10(-3). This value is significantly larger than the collision efficiency of primary particles colliding with an impermeable solid sphere of the same size as the aggregate, illustrating the important interplay between the permeability and the formation of aggregates.  相似文献

Herein, we have successfully introduced the stimuli-response concept into the controllable synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with designed properties. We used a pH-responsive zwitterionic polymer that acted as a template and a stabilizer. Gold colloids prepared in situ from the polymer solution have a narrow size distribution of about 5 nm. The assembly and disassembly of AuNPs can be finely tuned by modulating the net charges of the zwitterionic polymer so that they are either positive or negative as a function of the solution pH. Different aggregates and colors appear on altering the solution pH. In acidic solutions, gold colloids form large symmetrical aggregates, while the AuNPs disperse in solutions with a pH approximately 9.6. However, as the solution pH increases (>9.6), needle-like aggregates with a small interparticle distances are formed. On the basis of TEM, SEM, 1H NMR and UV/Vis measurements, we attribute pH-triggered aggregation and color changes of the gold colloids to the ionization process and conformational change of the polymer. The ionization process governs the choice of ligand anchored on the surface of AuNPs, and the conformational change of the polymer modulates the interspaces between AuNPs. The present approach, which is based on a rational design of the physicochemical properties of the template used in the synthesis process, provides a powerful means to control the properties of the nanomaterial. Furthermore, the colorimetric readout can be visualized and applied to future studies on nanoscale switches and sensors.  相似文献

In this work, a dendronization strategy was used to control interparticle spacing and the optical properties of gold nanoparticle (NP) aggregates in aqueous media. To achieve this goal, two dendritic disulfides bearing different functionalities on their periphery were synthesized and used as ligands to dendronize gold NPs. The dendronized NPs then undergo aggregation; this process was followed by UV-vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and transmission electronic microscopy (TEM) measurements and correlated with Generalized Mie Theory electrodynamics calculations. For comparison, NP functionalization was also studied using a nondendritic ligand. It was found that the use of dendritic disulfides allows for the preparation of controlled NP aggregates. This study demonstrates how different dendronization parameters, such as disulfide concentration, temperature, time and nature of the ligand (dendritic vs nondendritic), determine the control exerted over the size and stability of the NP aggregates.  相似文献

Thiol end-functionalized polystyrene chains have been introduced onto the surface of gold nanoparticles via a two-step grafting-to method. This simple grafting procedure is demonstrated to be efficient for gold nanoparticles of different sizes and for particles initially dispersed in either aqueous or organic media. The method has been applied successfully for a relatively large range of polystyrene chain lengths. Grafting densities, as determined by thermogravimetric analysis, are found to decrease with increasing chain length. In all cases, the grafting density indicates a dense brush conformation for the tethered chains. The resulting functionalized nanoparticles self-organize into hexagonally ordered monolayers when cast onto solid substrates from chloroform solution. Furthermore, the distance between the gold cores in the dried monolayer is controlled by the molecular weight of the grafted polystyrene. Optical absorption spectra recorded for the organized monolayers show the characteristic plasmon absorption of the gold particles. Importantly, the plasmon resonance frequency exhibits a distinct dependence on interparticle separation that can be attributed to plasmon coupling between neighboring gold cores.  相似文献

Evolution of exclusively spherical tiny gold nanoparticle aggregates is reported by UV photoactivation of aqueous HAuCl4 solution in cetyltrimethylammonium chloride micelles. In the photoactivation process, citrate is introduced for the first time to obtain aggregates of interacting particles with a tight size distribution. It is seen that the spectrum is substantially altered from the usual Au plasma resonance while the particles are present in the aggregate. Due to the interparticle interaction, the solution renders a blue color. Blue-pink color transformation of the gold sol has been observed in relation to the change in the interparticle distances without any change in the aspect ratio of the particles.  相似文献

Hollow gold nanospheres (HGNs) ranging from 29.9 nm/8.5 nm (outer diameter/shell thickness) to 51.5 nm/4.5 nm and having aspect ratios spanning 3.5-11.7 were employed to investigate the ability to tailor charge oscillations of HGN aggregates by systematic variation of particle aspect ratio, interparticle gap, and nanosphere inner surface spatial separation. Altering these properties in aggregated HGNs led to control over the interparticle plasmon resonance. Thiol-mediated aggregation was accomplished using either ethanedithiol or cysteine, resulting in dimeric structures in which monomer subunits were spatially separated by <3 ? and 1.2 ± 0.7 nm, respectively. Particle dimensions and separation distances were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. Experimental absorption spectra obtained for high-aspect ratio nanospheres dimerized using ethanedithiol exhibited an obvious blue shift of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) relative to that observed for the native, monomeric HGN. This spectral difference likely results from a charge-transfer plasmon resonance at the dimer interface. The extent of the blue shift was dependent upon shell thickness. Dimers comprised of thin-shelled HGNs exhibited the largest shift; aggregates containing HGNs with thick shells (≥7 nm) did not display a significant SPR shift when the individual particles were in contact. By comparison, all cysteine-induced aggregates examined in this study displayed large interparticle gaps (>1 nm) and a red-shifted SPR, regardless of particle dimensions. This effect can be described fully by a surface mode coupling model. All experimental measurements were verified by finite difference time domain calculations. In addition, simulated electric field maps highlighted the importance of the inner HGN surface in the interparticle coupling mechanism. These findings, which describe structure-dependent SPR properties, may be significant for applications derived from the plasmonic nanostructure platform.  相似文献

The self-organization of diblock copolymers into micellar structures in an appropriate solvent allows the deposition of well ordered arrays of pure metal and alloy nanoparticles on flat surfaces with narrow distributions in particle size and interparticle spacing. Here we investigated the influence of the materials (substrate and polymer) and deposition parameters (temperature and emersion velocity) on the deposition of metal salt loaded micelles by dip-coating from solution and on the order and inter-particle spacing of the micellar deposits and thus of the metal nanoparticle arrays resulting after plasma removal of the polymer shell. For identical substrate and polymer, variation of the process parameters temperature and emersion velocity enables the controlled modification of the interparticle distance within a certain length regime. Moreover, also the degree of hexagonal order of the final array depends sensitively on these parameters.  相似文献

Aggregation of gold nanoparticles of increasing size has been studied as a consequence of adsorption of 2-aminothiophenol (ATP) on gold nanoparticle surfaces. The capping property of ATP in the acidic pH range has been accounted from UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) studies. The effect of nanoparticle size (8-55 nm) on the nature of aggregation as well as the variation in the optical response due to variable degree of interparticle coupling effects among the gold particles have been critically examined. Various techniques such as transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, zeta-potential, and average particle size measurement were undertaken to characterize the nanoparticle aggregates. The aggregate size, interparticle distances, and absorption band wavelengths were found to be highly dependent on the pH of the medium and the concentration of the capping agent, ATP. The acquired SERS spectra of ATP relate the interparticle spacing. It has been observed that the SERS signal intensities are different for different sized gold nanoparticles.  相似文献

Charged colloidal particles form so‐called colloidal crystals in dispersions because of electrostatic interparticle interactions between them. We performed a systematic and quantitative investigation of the effect of salt on the interparticle distance in colloidal crystals with the ultra‐small‐angle X‐ray scattering (USAXS) technique. We accumulated a great deal of significant information about the mechanism of the colloidal crystal formation by USAXS. We found that the interparticle distance in colloidal crystals shows a maximum as a function of the added salt concentration. The maximum position of the interparticle distance was located around κa = 1.3 (κ−1 is the Debye length, and a is the particle radius). The behavior of the decrease of the interparticle distance with the increase of the added salt concentration at κa > 1.3 could be explained not quantitatively but qualitatively with the effective hard‐sphere theory. Thus, it was suggested that the dependence of the interparticle distance on the salt concentration at κa > 1.3 was reasonable according to the classical theories, such as the Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO) theory. In this article, we advance this theoretical approach with the classical theory, that is, with the assumption of the only repulsive force for the interparticle interaction, to elucidate the origin of the curious behavior of the interparticle distance. We estimated the structure factor by the rescaled mean spherical approximation (RMSA) with a Yukawa‐type interparticle interaction potential. A comparison between the prediction of the RMSA data and USAXS experimental data was performed. In this analysis, the charge renormalization procedure was applied. Although the origin of the behavior of the interparticle distance at κa < 1.3 is still a mystery, we concluded that the behavior at κa > 1.3 could be interpreted as a result from the DLVO manner. The effective surface charge number was on the order of several percentages of the analytical surface charge number. This experimental fact certainly proves the validly of our USAXS observation quantitatively and also predicts the existence of novel factors for κa ≤ 1.3, the real origin of colloidal crystal formation, which have never been taken into account previously. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Nearly monodisperse nanoparticles have been synthesized based on a naturally occurring polymer of hydropropylcellulose (HPC) using precipitation polymerization method. It is found that when the polydispersity index value of the HPC nanoparticles is less than 1.10, the HPC particles can self-assemble into an ordered structure, displaying bright colors. UV-visible spectroscopy reveals that the color shifts to a lower wavelength as the interparticle distance decreases following the Bragg diffraction equation. The HPC nanoparticle assembly in water has been further stabilized by covalently bonding neighboring particles to form a three-dimensional network. This network contains a large amount of water similar to a conventional bulk gel but displays colors as a result of its ordered structure.  相似文献

In size-exclusion chromatography (SEC), proteins and peptides are separated according to their molecular size in solution. SEC is especially useful as an effective fractionation step to separate a vast amount of impurities from the components of interest and/or as final step for the separation of purified proteins from their aggregates, in a so-called polishing step. However, the throughput in SEC is low compared to other chromatographic processes as good resolution can be achieved only with a limited feed volume (i.e., maximal approximately 5% of the column volume can be loaded). This limitation opposed widespread application of conventional SEC in industry despite its excellent separation potential. Therefore a continuous separation process (namely preparative continuous annular chromatography) was developed and compared to a conventional SEC system both using Superdex 200 prep grade as sorbent. An immunoglobulin G sample with a high content of aggregates was chosen as a model protein solution. The influence of the feed flow-rate, eluent flow-rate and rotation rate on the separation efficiency was investigated. The height equivalent to a theoretical plate was lower for preparative continuous annular chromatography which could be explained by reduced extra column band broadening. The packing quality was proved to be identical for both systems. The productivity of conventional batch SEC was lower compared to continuous SEC, consequently buffer consumption was higher in batch mode.  相似文献

We investigate the aggregation kinetics of gold nanoparticles using both experimental techniques (i.e., quasi-elastic light scattering, UV-visible spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy) and mathematical modeling (i.e., constant-number Monte Carlo). Aggregation of gold nanoparticles is induced by replacing the surface citrate groups with benzyl mercaptan. We show that the experimental results can be well described by the model in which interparticle interactions are described by the classical DLVO theory. We find that final gold nanoparticle aggregates have a fractal structure with a mass fractal dimension of 2.1-2.2. Aggregation of approximately 11 initial gold nanoparticles appears to be responsible for the initial color change of suspension. This kinetic study can be used to predict the time required for the initial color change of a gold nanoparticle suspension and should provide insights into the design and optimization of colorimetric sensors that utilize aggregation of gold nanoparticles.  相似文献

The understanding of the detailed molecular interactions between (GSH) glutathione molecules in the assembly of metal nanoparticles is important for the exploitation of the biological reactivity. We report herein results of an investigation of the assembly of gold nanoparticles mediated by glutathione and the disassembly under controlled conditions. The interparticle interactions and reactivities were characterized by monitoring the evolution of the surface plasmon resonance band using the spectrophotometric method and the hydrodynamic sizes of the nanoparticle assemblies using the dynamic light scattering technique. The interparticle reactivity of glutathiones adsorbed on gold nanoparticles depends on the particle sizes and the ionic strength of the solution. Larger-sized particles were found to exhibit a higher degree of interparticle assembly than smaller-sized particles. The assembly-disassembly reversibility is shown to be highly dependent on pH and additives in the solution. The interactions of the negatively charged citrates surrounding the GSH monolayer on the particle surface were believed to produce more effective interparticle spatial and electrostatic isolation than the case of OH (-) groups surrounding the GSH monolayer. The results have provided new insights into the hydrogen-bonding character of the interparticle molecular interaction of glutathiones bound on gold nanoparticles. The fact that the interparticle hydrogen-bonding interactions in the assembly and disassembly processes can be finely tuned by pH and chemical means has implications to the exploitation of the glutathione-nanoparticle system in biological detection and biosensors.  相似文献

Photoisomerization is an important reaction that confers photoresponsive functionality on nanoparticles. Although photoisomerization of molecules forming self-assembled monolayers on two-dimensional surfaces or three-dimensional clusters has been studied, a detailed picture of interactions of molecules undergoing isomerization with nanoparticles is not available. In this paper, we report on the photoisomerization of azobenzene derivatives spatially confined in gold nanoparticle (AuNP) aggregates. AuNP aggregates allow us to simultaneously probe the structural changes of molecules via surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and the accompanying changes in interparticle interactions via surface plasmon couplings. AuNP aggregates are formed by the adsorption of synthesized azobenzene-derivatized sulfides (Az) onto the surfaces of AuNPs. The photoisomerization of the adsorbed Az from trans to cis by excitation at 365 nm causes the AuNPs to move close to each other in the aggregates, leading to a redshift of the surface plasmon coupling band in the UV-vis spectra and a concomitant rise in SERS intensity. SERS spectra reveal that the vibrational modes containing the N=N stretching character redshift upon irradiation, suggesting that the N=N bond is significantly weakened when Az is in the cis form in the AuNP aggregates. The weakening of the N=N bond is attributed to the interaction of the N=N bond, which is more exposed to the outside in the cis conformation, with the nearby AuNPs that have come closer by the isomerization of adsorbed Az. We find that backisomerization from cis to trans occurs much faster in the AuNP aggregates (k = 1.9 × 10(-2) min(-1)) than in solution (k = 1.3 × 10(-3) min(-1)) because of the reduced N=N bond order of cis-Az in the aggregates.  相似文献

To model thioether-copper coordination chemistry including oxidative reactivity, such as occurs in the copper monooxygenases peptidylglycine -hydroxylating monooxygenase (PHM) and dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DbetaH), we have synthesized new tridentate N2S ligands LSEP and LSBz [LSEP = methyl(2-phenethylsulfanylpropyl)(2-pyridin-2-ylethyl)amine; LSBz = (2-benzylsulfanylpropyl)methyl(2-pyridin-2-ylethyl)amine)]. Both copper(I) and copper(II) complexes have been prepared, and their respective O2 and H2O2 chemistry has been studied. Under mild conditions, oxygenation of [(LSEP)CuI]+ (1a) and [(LSBz)CuI]+ (2a) leads to ligand sulfoxidation, thus exhibiting copper monooxygenase activity. A copper(II) complex of this sulfoxide ligand product, [(LSOEP)CuII(CH3OH)(OClO3)2], has been structurally characterized, demonstrating Cu-Osulfoxide ligation. The X-ray structure of [(LSEP)CuII(H2O)(OClO3)]+ (1b) and its solution UV-visible spectral properties [S-CuII LMCT band at 365 nm (MeCN solvent); epsilon = 4285 M-1 cm-1] indicate the thioether sulfur atom is bound to the cupric ion in both the solid (CuII-S distance: 2.31 A) and solution states. Reaction of 1b with H2O2 leads to sulfonation via the sulfoxide; excess hydrogen peroxide gives mostly sulfone product. These results may provide some insight into recent reports concerning protein methionine oxidation, showing the potential importance of copper-mediated oxidation processes in certain biological settings.  相似文献
