Eight homologous series of fluorinated phenyl 4-[(4-n-alkoxyphenyl)ethynyl]benzoates have been synthesized. Textural observations by polarizing microscopy and DSC measurements of the phase transitions show that most of these compounds are thermotropic liquid crystals with nematic and smectic A phases; furthermore, several show monotropic high order smectic phases. The results showed that the SmA phase is enhanced with increasing degree of fluorosubstitution on the para- and meta-positions of the terminal phenyl groups. The mesomorphic properties of these compounds are also affected by the direction of ester bonds. The effect of triple bonds is also discussed.  相似文献

The discovery of nematic phase in 3-fluoro-4-trifluoromethyl-4?-(4?-alkyl [trans, trans-1,1?-bicyclohexyl]-4-yl) 1,1?-biphenyls (n = 2, 3, 4, 5) is an accidental affair. A convenient method was used for the synthesis of these target compounds. After the preparation of the intermediate with trifluomethyl group, the target compounds were synthesised by Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. Then, these phase transition temperatures were measured by polarising textural observation, which confirmed the existence of single nematic phase. These temperatures were also measured by differential scanning calorimetry, which showed that the clearing point of compound (n = 3) is 267℃. The possible mechanism of occurrence of unique nematic phase was discussed on the basis of the principles of fluorine chemistry.  相似文献

Four series of tolane-based chiral liquid crystals that incorporate a tetrafluorophenyl moiety and a flexible oxymethylene linkage into the core have been synthesized. The mesomorphic properties have been studied by thermal polarizing microscopy. The relationship between the properties and chemical structures of all these target compounds, especially the influence of flexible oxymethylene linkage in core on the formation of mesophases, is also discussed in detail.  相似文献

Various substituted aminodiphenyldiacetylenes of the type with X = C3H7, C5H11, F or NO2 and R, R' = H, CH3-C6H13 were synthesized and their mesomorphic properties determined. Semi-empirical and ab initio quantum chemical calculations using AM1, 421G and 631G* suggested that the amino group would increase the dielectric anisotropy and optical birefringence as compared to the alkyl chain. Mesomorphic properties were found to be poor with the maximum nematic phase range being 44.8°C and many of the compounds having no nematic phase. Both melting temperatures and enthalpies for those having nematic phases were too high to form good eutectic mixtures.  相似文献

A semiperfluorinated chain has been introduced into three series of lactate‐based molecules, and their mesomorphic properties have been studied by DSC and optical polarized microscope. An abnormal phenomenon has been found that the introduction of a triple bond in the core of the molecule, which lengthened the molecule, gave rise to a decrease in the thermal stability of chiral smectic C phase and smectic A phase. 2, 3‐Difluoro substituents of the phenylenic structure hinder the formation of the chiral smectic C phase because of the steric effect.  相似文献

Abstract

A homologous series of “fraternal twin” molecules consisting of relatively short and relatively long mesogenic units connected by a flexible spacer group and flexible chains as the terminal groups was synthesized in an attempt to form a non-chiral longitudinal ferroelectric smectic phase. The shorter of the two mesogenic units consisted of a 4-alkyl/alkoxy substituted biphenyl ester; the longer a terbenzoate group. Mesomorphic properties were determined by hot-stage polarizing microscopy and DSC. Several smectic phases were observed as well as nematic phases. Characterization of the smectic phases by microscopic textures is discussed.  相似文献

Six new compounds with chiral terminal chains and three rings bridged via the -COS- and -COO- groups have been synthesized. Three of them belong to series A and have two benzene rings and one bicyclo[2,2,2]octane, while the remaining three come from series B, where all three are benzene rings. Series A compounds share a characteristic feature of two smectic phases: SmA* and SmB*, whereas mesogens from the B series exhibit only the one SmA* phase.  相似文献

New unsymmetrical disubstituted biphenyls have been synthesized. Two different chains (one hydrocarbon and the other fluorinated) are linked through an acetamide bond to 4-methoxy-4'-hydroxybiphenyl. Their mesomorphic properties have been characterized by light microscopy and by differential thermal analysis showing the peculiar contribution of the hydrocarbon chain and the fluorinated tail. The enhancement of the hydrocarbon moiety from one to twelve methylene groups leads to a decrease of the clearing temperatures; furthermore the enantiotropic behaviour is changed to monotropic. The variation of the fluorinated moiety generates strong effects on the transition temperatures. These mesomorphic properties are compared to those of their monocatenar perfluorinated analogues incorporating a connector of the ester or monosubstituted amide type.  相似文献
