On Gronwall-Bellman-Bihari-type integral inequalities in several variables with retardation

Presented are some new nonlinear integral inequalities of the Gronwall-Bellman-Bihari type in n-independent variables with delay which extend recent results of C. C. Yeh and M.-H. Shin [J. Math. Anal. Appl.86, (1982), 157–167], C. C. Yeh [J. Math. Anal. Appl.87, (1982), 311–321], and A. I. Zahariev and D. D. Bainor [J. Math. Anal. Appl.89, (1981), 147–149]. Some applications of the results are included.     

Albanese and Picard 1-motives

We define, in a purely algebraic way, 1-motives Alb⁺(X), Alb⁻(X), Pic⁺(X), and Pic⁻(X) associated with any algebraic scheme X over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. For X over C of dimension n, the Hodge realizations are, respectively, H^{2n − 1} (X, Z(n))/(torsion), H₁ (X, Z)/(torsion), H¹ (X, Z(1)), and H_{2n − 1} (X, Z(1 n))/(torsion).     

On the chromatic index of multigraphs without large triangles

Let M be a multigraph. Vizing (Kibernetika (Kiev)1 (1965), 29–39) proved that χ′(M)≤Δ(M)+μ(M). Here it is proved that if χ′(M)≥Δ(M)+s, where $\text{1}\text{2}\text{(μ(M) + 1) < s}$ then M contains a 2s-sided triangle. In particular, (C′) if μ(M)≤2 and M does not contain a 4-sided triangle then χ′(M)≤Δ(M) + 1. Javedekar (J. Graph Theory4 (1980), 265–268) had conjectured that (C) if G is a simple graph that does not induce K_1,3 or K₅?e then χ(G)≤ω(G) + 1. The author and Schmerl (Discrete Math.45 (1983), 277–285) proved that (C′) implies (C); thus Javedekar's conjecture is true.     

Recurrence and genericity

We prove a C¹-connecting lemma for pseudo-orbits of diffeomorphisms on compact manifolds. We explore some consequences for C¹-generic diffeomorphisms. The Ehrhard inequality

The size of sums of sets,II

We prove inequalities which give lower bounds for the Lebesgue measures of setsE +K whereK is a certain kind of Cantor set. For example, ifC is the Cantor middle-thirds subset of the circle groupT, then $$m(E)^{1 - log2/log3} \leqq m(E + C)$$ for every BorelE ?T.     

A simplified variational model for the bidimensional coupled evolution equations of a nematic liquid crystal

In Dias (C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris Sér. A. 285 (1977)) we have deduced, from Leslie's model (Arch. Rat. Mech. Anal. 28 (1968)), a weak formulation for the bidimensional coupled evolution equations of an incompressible nematic liquid crystal submitted to an homogeneous magnetic field. In this paper we prove some results about the existence, regularity and uniqueness of their solutions. This study extends the special case developed in Dias (J. Mécanique15 (1976)), where we assumed that the director field depends on time only.     

On the number of rooted c-nets

W. T. Tutte (Canad. J. Math.15 (1963), 249–271) was the first person to find the number of rooted c-nets. Then, R. C. Mullin and P. J. Schellenberg found it again in another way (J. Combin. Theory4 (1968), 259–276). This note presents two simpler recursive formulae and an explicit one as a summation with all the terms positive except for at most one negative term.     

The fundamental group of an algebraic link

Green–Lazarsfeld's conjecture for generic curves of large gonality

We use Green's canonical syzygy conjecture for generic curves to prove that the Green–Lazarsfeld gonality conjecture holds for generic curves of genus g, and gonality d, if g/3<d<[g/2]+2. To cite this article: M. Aprodu, C. Voisin, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. I 336 (2003).     

Derivation of the Schrödinger–Poisson equation from the quantum N-body problemJustification de l'équation de Schrödinger–Poisson à partir du problème quantique à N corps

Braids on surfaces and finite type invariants

Critical sets in 3-space

Given a non-empty compact set C ?R ³, is C the set of critical points for some smooth proper functionf :R ³ →R ₊? In this paper we prove that the answer is “yes” for Antoine’s Necklace and most but not all tame links.     

The extended mapping class group is generated by 3 symmetries

We prove that for g?1 the extended mapping class group is generated by three orientation reversing involutions. To cite this article: M. Stukow, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. I 338 (2004).     

A note on the inverse-partitioned-matrix method in linear regression analysis

Let the classical regression model y = Xβ + σε, E(ε) = 0, Cov ε = V be given. It is shown that the inverse-partitioned-matrix (IPM) method due to C. R. Rao (1973) can easily be understood if the prediction problem for linear models is considered.     

Chow groups of surfaces with h2,0⩽1

We will investigate the geometry of rational equivalence classes of points on a surface S. We will show that if S is a general projective K3 surface then these equivalence classes are dense in the complex topology. Derivation of nonlinear bending theory for shells from three-dimensional nonlinear elasticity by Gamma-convergence
