We report current transmission data through a split-gate constriction fabricated onto a two-dimensional electron system in the integer quantum Hall (QH) regime. Split-gate biasing drives interedge backscattering and is shown to lead to suppressed or enhanced transmission, in marked contrast to the expected linear Fermi-liquid behavior. This evolution is described in terms of particle-hole symmetry and allows us to conclude that an unexpected class of gate-controlled particle-hole-symmetric chiral Luttinger liquids (CLLs) can exist at the edges of our QH circuit. These results highlight the role of particle-hole symmetry on the properties of CLL edge states. 相似文献

We report results of a study of (integer) quantum Hall transitions in a single or multiple Landau levels for non-interacting
electrons in disordered two-dimensional systems, obtained by projecting a tight-binding Hamiltonian to the corresponding magnetic
subbands. In finite-size systems, we find that mesoscopic effects often dominate, leading to apparent non-universal scaling
behavior in higher Landau levels. This is because localization length, which grows exponentially with Landau level index,
exceeds the system sizes amenable to the numerical study at present. When band mixing between multiple Landau levels is present,
mesoscopic effects cause a crossover from a sequence of quantum Hall transitions for weak disorder to classical behavior for
strong disorder. This behavior may be of relevance to experimentally observed transitions between quantum Hall states and
the insulating phase at low magnetic fields. 相似文献

The electron–hole states in the fractional quantum Hall regime is investigated with a back-gated undoped quantum well by photoluminesccence in magnetic fields. The evolution of the photoluminescence spectra is discussed depending on the electron density. We find anomalies of the photoluminescence at the integer as well as the fractional filling factors. 相似文献

We study hierarchical network models which have recently been introduced to approximate the Chalker-Coddington model for the integer quantum Hall effect (A.G. Galstyan and M.E. Raikh, PRB 5 (1997) 1422; Arovas et al., PRB 56 (1997) 4751). The hierarchical structure is due to a recursive method starting from a finite elementary cell. The localization-delocalization transition occurring in these models is displayed in the flow of the conductance distribution under increasing system size. We numerically determine this flow, calculate the critical conductance distribution, the critical exponent of the localization length, and the multifractal exponents of critical eigenstates. 相似文献

Y-shaped Kekulébond textures in a honeycomb lattice on a graphene-copper superlattice have recently been experimentally revealed.In this paper,the effects of such a bond modulation on the transport coefficients of Kekulé-patterned graphene are investigated in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field.Analytical expressions are derived for the Hall and longitudinal conductivities using the Kubo formula.It is found that the Y-shaped Kekulébond texture lifts the valley degeneracy of all Landau levels except that of the zero mode,leading to additional plateaus in the Hall conductivity accompanied by a split of the corresponding peaks in the longitudinal conductivity.Consequently,the Hall conductivity is quantized as±ne2/h for n=2,4,6,8,10,...,excluding some plateaus that disappear due to the complete overlap of the Landau levels of different cones.These results also suggest that DC Hall conductivity measurements will allow us to determine the Kekulébond texture amplitude. 相似文献

Effects of backward scattering between fractional quantum Hall (FQH) edge modes are studied. Based on the edge-state picture
for hierarchical FQH liquids, we discuss the possibility of the transitions between different plateaux of the tunneling conductance
G. We find a selection rule for the sequence which begins with a conductance (m: integer, p: even integer) in units of e
2/h. The shot-noise spectrum as well as the scaling behavior of the tunneling current is calculated explicitly.

The quantum spin Hall effect(QSHE) was first realized in HgTe quantum wells(QWs),which remain the only known two-dimensional topological insulator so far.In this paper,we have systematically studied the effect of the thickness fluctuation of HgTe QWs on the QSHE.We start with the case of constant mass with random distributions,and reveal that the disordered system can be well described by a virtual uniform QW with an effective mass when the number of components is small.When the number is infinite and corresponds to the real fluctuation,we find that the QSHE is not only robust,but also can be generated by relatively strong fluctuation.Our results imply that the thickness fluctuation does not cause backscattering,and the QSHE is robust to it. 相似文献

The propagation direction of fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) edge states has been investigated experimentally via the symmetry properties of the multi-terminal capacitances of a two-dimensional electron gas. Although strong asymmetries with respect to zero magnetic field appear, no asymmetries with respect to even denominator Landau level filling factor ν are seen. We have developed a novel technique that enables measurements of the breakdown of both the integer and fractional quantum Hall effects in a two-dimensional electron system without the need to contact the sample. The critical Hall electric fields that we measure are significantly higher than those reported by other workers, and support the quasi-elastic inter-Landau-level tunnelling model of breakdown. Comparison of the fractional quantum Hall effect results with those obtained on the integer quantum Hall effect allows the fractional quantum Hall effect energy gap to be determined and provides a test of the composite-fermion theory. The temperature dependence of the critical current gives an insight into the mechanism by which momentum may be conserved during the breakdown process. 相似文献

With the recent observation of graphene-like Landau levels at the surface of topological insulators, the possibility of fractional quantum Hall effect, which is a fundamental signature of strong correlations, has become of interest. Some experiments have reported intra-Landau level structure that is suggestive of fractional quantum Hall effect. This paper discusses the feasibility of fractional quantum Hall effect from a theoretical perspective, and argues that while this effect should occur, ideally, in the n=0 and |n|=1 Landau levels, it is ruled out in higher |n| Landau levels. Unlike graphene, the fractional quantum Hall effect in topological insulators is predicted to show an interesting asymmetry between n=1 and n=−1 Landau levels due to spin-orbit coupling. 相似文献
