We give a new algebraic characterization of holomorphic nondegeneracy for embedded real algebraic hypersurfaces in , . We then use this criterion to prove the following result about real analyticity of smooth CR mappings: any smooth CR mapping
H between a real analytic hypersurface and a rigid polynomial holomorphically nondegenerate hypersurface is real analytic,
provided the map H is not totally degenerate in the sense of Baouendi and Rothschild.

Let be a connected real-analytic hypersurface containing a connected complex hypersurface , and let be a smooth CR mapping sending M into another real-analytic hypersurface . In this paper, we prove that if f does not collapse E to a point and does not collapse M into the image of E, and if the Levi form of M vanishes to first order along E, then f is real-analytic in a neighborhood of E. In general, the corresponding statement is false if the Levi form of M vanishes to second order or higher, in view of an example due to the author. We also show analogous results in higher dimensions
provided that the target M' satisfies a certain nondegeneracy condition. The main ingredient in the proof, which seems to be of independent interest,
is the prolongation of the system defining a CR mapping sending M into M' to a Pfaffian system on M with singularities along E. The nature of the singularity is described by the order of vanishing of the Levi form along E.

We introduce the notion of an -combing and use it to show that hyperbolic groups satisfy linear isoperimetric inequalities for filling real cycles in each positive dimension. S. Gersten suggested the concept of metabolicity (over or ) for groups which implies hyperbolicity. Metabolicity admits several equivalent definitions: by vanishing of -cohomology, using combings, and others. We prove several criteria for a group to be hyperbolic, -metabolicity being among them. In particular, a finitely presented group G is hyperbolic iff for any normed vector space V and any .

Singularities of functions of modality 1 or 2 were classified by Arnold [3]. Types of those of modality 3 were listed in [14].
Here we show that these are all Newton non-degenerate in the extended sense introduced in [17], and use this fact to obtain
explicit regular bases and precise normal forms for right and for contact equivalence. This requires care since the only existing
method for non-semiquasihomogeneous germs (using Arnold's “Condition A”) does not apply to all our cases.
