σ-Contractible and σ-biprojective Banach algebras

Abstract

The notion of σ-amenability for Banach algebras and its related notions were introduced and extensively studied by M.S. Moslehian and A.N. Motlagh in [10]. We develop these notions parallel to the amenability of Banach algebras introduced by B.E. Johnson in [5]. Briefly, we investigate σ-contractibility and σ-biprojectivity of Banach algebras, which are extensions of usual notions of contractibility and biprojectivity, respectively, where σ is a bounded endomorphism of the corresponding Banach algebra. We also give the notion σ-diagonal. Then we verify relations between σ-contractibility, σ-biprojectivity and the existence of a σ-diagonal for a Banach algebra, when σ has dense range or is an idempotent. Moreover, we obtain some hereditary properties of these concepts.     

Various notions of amenability in Banach algebras

We give a survey of results and problems concerning various notions of amenability in Banach algebras. We also provide different characterizations of these notions of amenability and the relationship that exists between them and some important properties of the algebra.     

Some notes on amenability and weak amenability of Lau product of Banach algebras defined by a Banach algebra morphism

Let A and B be Banach algebras and T : B → A be a continuous homomorphism. nweak amenability of the Banach algebra A ×T B(defined in Bade, W. G., Curtis, P. C., Dales, H. G.:Amenability and weak amenability for Beurling and Lipschitz algebras. Proc. London Math. Soc.,55(2), 359–377(1987)) is studied. The new version of a Banach algebra defined with a continuous homomorphism is introduced and Arens regularity and various notions of amenability of this algebra are studied.     

Approximate and pseudo-amenability of various classes of Banach algebras

We continue the investigation of notions of approximate amenability that were introduced in work of the second and third authors together with R.J. Loy. It is shown that every boundedly approximately contractible Banach algebra has a bounded approximate identity, and that the Fourier algebra of the free group on two generators is not operator approximately amenable. Further examples are obtained of ?¹-semigroup algebras which are approximately amenable but not amenable; using these, we show that bounded approximate contractibility need not imply sequential approximate amenability. Results are also given for Segal algebras on locally compact groups, and algebras of p-pseudo-functions on discrete groups.     

Amenability notions of hypergroups and some applications to locally compact groups

Different notions of amenability on hypergroups and their relations are studied. Developing Leptin's theorem for discrete hypergroups, we characterize the existence of a bounded approximate identity for hypergroup Fourier algebras. We study the Leptin condition for discrete hypergroups derived from the representation theory of some classes of compact groups. Studying amenability of the hypergroup algebras for discrete commutative hypergroups, we obtain some results on amenability properties of some central Banach algebras on compact and discrete groups.     

Extensions of Banach Lie-Poisson spaces

The extension of Banach Lie-Poisson spaces is studied and linked to the extension of a special class of Banach Lie algebras. The case of W∗-algebras is given particular attention. Semidirect products and the extension of the restricted Banach Lie-Poisson space by the Banach Lie-Poisson space of compact operators are given as examples.     

Real stable ranks

Several new notions of stable ranks for commutative Banach algebras are introduced. Due to the fact that they depend on certain orthogonal groups, they are called real stable ranks and are finer than their complex counterparts.

COILS FOR VECTORSPACE CATEGORIES

Coils as components of Auslander–Reiten quivers of algebras and coil algebras are introduced by Assem and Skowroński. This concept is applied in the present paper to vectorspace categories. The four admissible operations on an Auslander–Reiten component of a vectorspace category, and the notions of v-coils and of vcoil vectorspace categories are introduced. A detailed study on the indecomposable objects of factorspace category of a vcoil vectorspace category is carried out.     

Derivations and nest algebras on Banach space

In this paper the notions of nest and nest algebra are generalised to sets of operators on Banach space. Their fundamental properties are established and continuous derivations on such algebras are shown to be implemented by an operator which can be constructed explicitly.

On the simplicial cohomology of Banach operator algebras

We investigate the simplicial cohomology of certain Banach operator algebras. The two main examples considered are the Banach algebra of all bounded operators on a Banach space and its ideal of approximable operators. Sufficient conditions will be given forcing Banach algebras of this kind to be simplicially trivial.

Cohomological Characterizations of Biprojective and Biflat Banach Algebras

 Let A be a biprojective Banach algebra, and let A-mod-A be the category of Banach A-bimodules. In this paper, for every given -mod-A, we compute all the cohomology groups . Furthermore, we give some cohomological characterizations of biprojective Banach algebras. In particular, we show that the following properties of a Banach algebra A are equivalent to its biprojectivity: (i) for all -mod -A; (ii) for all -mod-A; (iii) for all -mod-A. (Here and are, respectively, the Banach A-bimodules of left, right and double multipliers of X.) Further, if A is a biflat Banach algebra and -mod-A, we compute all the cohomology groups , where is the Banach A-bimodule dual to X. Also, we give cohomological characterizations of biflat Banach algebras. We prove that a Banach algebra A is biflat if and only if any of the following conditions is valid: (i’) for all -mod-A; (ii’) for all -mod-A; (iii’) for all -mod-A. Received 16 June 1998     

Generalized stable ranks for commutative Banach algebras

We introduce the notion of generalized E-stable ranks for commutative unital Banach algebras and determine these ranks for the disk-algebra A(\mathbbD){A(\mathbb{D})}, many of its subalgebras, and the algebra H ^∞ of bounded holomorphic functions in the unit disk. Relations to L-sets and separating algebras, notions due to Csordas and Reiter, are given, too. Finally we show that the absolute stable rank of A(\mathbbD){A(\mathbb{D})} and H ^∞ is bigger than 2.     

Algebras generated by idempotents and the symbol calculus for singular integral operators

It is proved that in Banach algebras generated by two idempotents and, perhaps, by a certain flip operator the standard identity F₄ is fulfilled. The maximal ideal space of such algebras is determined and the corresponding symbol is given. By means of local techniques these results are applied to obtain a symbol calculus for singular integral operators with Carleman shift (changing the orientation) in weighted Banach spaces.     

Über komplexe Banachverbandsalgebren

It is the aim of this paper to show that complex Banach lattice algebras have a richer spectral theory than complex Banach algebras without lattice structure. Indeed, it turns out that complex Banach lattice algebras having the property that the absolute values of their complex homomorphisms are again multiplicative are interesting with respect to the Gelfand theory. For example the set of complex homomorphisms is “cyclic.” Furthermore among other things it is shown that for central homomorphisms of AL-algebras, a special class of complex Banach lattice algebras, similar results are valid as J. L. Taylor has proved them for convolution measure algebras.
