We report on efficient THz pulse generation via optical rectification with femtosecond laser pulses focused to a line by a cylindrical lens. This configuration provides phase-matched conditions in the superluminal regime. 35 pJ THz pulses have been generated with this technique in a stoichiometric LiNbO3 crystal pumped by 2 μJ femtosecond laser pulses at room temperature. An unusual superquadratic rise of the THz pulse energy with the laser pulse energy has been observed at high laser energies. This extraordinary energy dependence of the THz generation efficiency is explained by self-focusing of the laser beam in the crystal. Z-scan measurements and comparison of the THz pulse spectra created with laser pulses having different energies confirm this interpretation.  相似文献

Frequency doubling the output of a high-power femtosecond Cr:forsterite regenerative amplifier with >50% conversion efficiency in a temperature-tuned noncritically phase-matched LBO crystal produces femtosecond pulses of >100 μJ energy in the visible range near 625 nm at a pulse duration of about 200 fs or >65 μJ at <170 fs. We report on an optical parametric amplifier (OPA) based on two potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) crystals in a walk-off compensating geometry. An Nd:YLF regenerative amplifier at a 1-kHz repetition rate serves as the pump source. The seed beam is delivered by a synchronously pumped frequency-stabilized optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN). At pump intensities of about 7 GW/cm2 large amplification factors of more than 104 were achieved, resulting in pulse energies of more than 450 μJ and 350 μJ for the signal and idler pulses, respectively, at a 1-kHz repetition rate. In the saturation regime the time–bandwidth product increases from two to three times the Fourier limit, with a pulse duration of 105 ps and a bandwidth of 12.7 GHz at the highest intensities employed. A 50 cm silver coated hollow fiber with inner diameter of 250 μm and filled with argon has been used to compress optical pulses from a Ti:sapphire laser at 800 nm. Input pulses with energy of 250 μJ and duration of 110 fs were used and compressed pulses with energy of 220 μJ and duration of 20 fs were generated by using a prism compressor. Numerical and experimental results are compared. There is good agreement between the measured beam diameters of the hollow-fiber output pulse and the calculated values obtained from propagation of the HE11 mode into free space. For comparison, a similar uncoated fused-silica hollow fiber was also used to obtain 20 fs compressed pulses with an energy of 190 μJ. Spectral broadening of femtosecond Cr:forsterite laser pulses is enhanced due to the use of tapered fibers. Supercontinuum generation with unamplified subnanojoule femtosecond Cr:forsterite laser pulses is observed for the first time. With 40-fs 0.6-nJ pulses of 1.25-μm Cr:forsterite laser radiation coupled into a tapered fiber having a taper waist diameter of about 2 μm and a taper waist length of 90 mm, we observed the spectra spanning more than two octaves at the output of the fiber in the regime of anomalous group-velocity dispersion. This result opens the way for the creation of compact femtosecond Cr:forsterite laser plus tapered fiber systems for optical metrology and biomedical applications. We demonstrate the generation of ultraviolet 33-fs pulses with a shot-to-shot energy fluctuation of less than 3% using sum frequency mixing of visible pulses of a noncollinear optical parametric amplifier with sub-40-fs pulses of a 1-kHz Ti:sapphire-amplified system. The pulses are transform-limited (ΔνΔτ=0.36) and tunable in the range from 315 nm to 355 nm with energy above 1 μJ (2.6 μJ at 330 nm). The generation of programmable complex femtosecond pulses in the mid infrared (3–10 μm) with high precision is reported. Designed pulse shapes in the near infrared (1–1.6 μm) are transferred to the mid infrared via difference-frequency mixing with a second infrared pulse spectrally narrowed in a zero-dispersion compressor. In particular, pulse sequences with variable relative phases have been obtained. The control of the pulse properties is achieved purely electronically, allowing for implementation into a feedback loop. Noncollinearly phase-matched optical parametric amplifiers (NOPAs) pumped by the blue light of a frequency-doubled Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier are a convenient source of continuously tunable ultrashort pulses in the visible and near infrared for spectroscopic experiments. We present the underlying principles, report recent improvements and describe the experiences gained from the routine use of a number of NOPAs in our laboratories. We find that the setup can easily be optimized for the given experimental requirements. Typical output-pulse energies in the visible are 5 to 10 μJ and a few μJ in the NIR from 200 μJ regenerative-amplifier pulses at 800 nm. From 460 to 700 nm, pulse lengths between 10 and 20 fs are routinely achieved, while the length increases monotonically from about 20 fs at 900 nm to just below 50 fs at 1600 nm. In all cases this corresponds to a dramatic shortening compared to the length of the pump pulses of around 100 fs. First results show that the 700 to 900 nm region can be accessed with sub-50-fs pulse lengths by use of an intermediate white-light generator in a two-stage setup. The paper reports on an experimental investigation and numerical analysis of noncritically and critically phasematched LiB3O5 (LBO) optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) synchronously pumped by the third harmonic of a cw diode-pumped mode-locked Nd:YVO4 oscillator–amplifier system. The laser system generates 9.0 W of 355-nm mode-locked radiation with a pulse duration of 7.5 ps and a repetition rate of 84 MHz. The LBO OPO, synchronously pumped by the 355-nm pulses, generates a signal wave tunable in the blue spectral range 457–479 nm. With a power of up to 5.0 W at 462 nm and 1.7 W at 1535 nm the conversion efficiency is 74%. The OPO is characterized experimentally by measuring the output power (and its dependence on the pump power, the transmission of the output coupler and the resonator length) and the pulse properties (such as pulse duration and spectral width). Also the beam quality of the resonant and nonresonant waves is investigated. The measured results are compared with the predictions of a numerical analysis for Gaussian laser and OPO beams. In addition to the blue-signal output visible-red 629-nm radiation is generated by sum-frequency mixing of the 1.535-μm infrared idler wave with the residual 1.064-μm laser radiation. A power of 1.25 W of 1.535-μm idler radiation and 5.7 W of 1.064-μm laser light generated a red 629-nm output power of 2.25 W. The fabrication of a micro-structures in fused SiO2 by femtosecond laser pulses was studied in the range of pulse duration 150∼500 fs, pulse energy 60 nJ to ∼7 μJ and wavelengths 400 nm and 800 nm. The characteristics of the cross section of the micro-structure were explained with the multiphoton-ionization and avalanche-ionization processes in the femtosecond laser-induced breakdown. The characteristics of the longitudinal length of the micro-structure relating to the direct-focusing and self-action effects are also discussed. Self-compression of multi-millijoule femtosecond laser pulses and dramatic increase of the peak intensity are found in pressurized helium and neon within a range of intensity in which the ionization modification of the material parameters by the pulse is negligible. The pulse propagation is studied by the (3 + 1)-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation including basic lowest order optical processes - diffraction, second order of dispersion, and third order of nonlinearity. Smooth and well controllable pulse propagation dynamics is found. Construction of compressed pulses of controllable parameters at given space target point by a proper chose of the pulse energy and/or gas pressure is predicted.  相似文献

We report on an injection-seeded 9.5-W 82-MHz-repetition-rate picosecond optical parametric generator (OPG) based on a 55 mm long crystal of periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) with a quasi-phase-matching (QPM) grating period of 29.75 μm. The OPG is excited by a continuously diode pumped mode-locked picosecond Nd:YVO4 oscillator-amplifier system. The laser system generates 7 ps pulses with a repetition rate of 82.3 MHz and an average power of 24 W. Without injection-seeding the total average output power of the OPG is 8.9 W, which corresponds to an internal conversion efficiency of 50%. The wavelengths of the signal and idler waves were tuned in the range 1.57–1.64 μm and 3.03–3.3 μm, respectively, by changing the crystal temperature from 150 °C to 250 °C. Injection seeding of the OPG at 1.58 μm with 4 mW of single frequency continuous-wave radiation of a distributed-feedback (DFB) diode laser increases the OPG output to 9.5 W (53% conversion efficiency). The injection seeding increases the pulse duration and reduces the spectral bandwidth. When pumped by 10 W of 1.06 μm laser radiation, the duration of the signal pulses increased from 3.6 ps to 5.5 ps while the spectral bandwidth is reduced from 4.5 nm to 0.85 nm. Seeding thus improved the time-bandwidth product from 1.98 to a value of 0.56, much closer to the Fourier limit. Received: 29 April 2002 / Published online: 8 August 2002  相似文献

Ultrafast nonlinear optical properties of lead(II) phthalocyanine (PbPc)-doped silica gel glasses were investigated using a femtosecond optical Kerr shutter (OKS) setup at wavelength of 800 nm. The nonlinear response time of the PbPc-doped silica gel glasses was measured to be less than 90 fs. Measurements for the dependence of Kerr signals on the polarization angle between pump and probe beams showed that the Kerr signals induced by 30-fs pulses arose mainly from photoinduced birefringence effect and not from a laser-induced transient grating as observed when using a 200-fs pulse laser.  相似文献

The results of numerical modelling of cascaded compression of the first and second Stokes pulses during regenerative regime of the forward transient stimulated Raman amplification are presented for the case when the walk-off length of the first Stokes pulse due to group velocity mismatch is shorter than the length of the nonlinear medium. The influence of the initial amplitudes of the seed first Stokes pulses, its durations and its time delay with respect to the pump pulse, the Kerr nonlinearity of the medium on the conversion efficiency, duration and propagation factor M2 of the first and second Stokes pulse are studied. It is demonstrated that for the pump pulse duration of 1 ps the duration of the compressed second Stokes pulses in a KGW crystal near the beam axis may be approximately 14 times shorter than the pump pulse duration. It is shown that the propagation factor of the compressed pulses increases significantly because of complex spatial-temporal dynamics of compression and the influence of Kerr nonlinearity of Raman medium.  相似文献

We have developed a 6–12 μm mid-infrared (MIR) femtosecond laser source for glyco-protein structure analysis. The MIR femtosecond laser pulses are generated by a differential frequency generation (DFG) configuration with a combination of Ti:sapphire based regeneratively amplified femtosecond laser pulses (780 nm, 160 fs, 1 mJ) and a β-BaB2O4 (BBO) based optical parametric amplifier (OPA). The MIR pulse energy exceeds 4.5 μJ, where a glyco-protein molecule has resonant absorption lines due to the vibrational–rotational transitions. The pulse width is estimated to be less than 1 ps according to the cross correlation measurement between the two OPA output pulses. Using the MIR femtosecond laser pulses, we demonstrated photo-dissociation of the sialyl Lewis X (sLeX) proton added ion, which is the first time to the best of our knowledge. High average power ultra-fast fiber chirped pulse amplification system   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We report on a high-gain diode-pumped ytterbium-doped fiber-amplifier system delivering pulse energies in the 100-μJ range at high repetition rates (32 kHz) with nearly-diffraction-limited beam quality (M2∼1.7) at a 1060-nm center wavelength. Femtosecond seed-laser pulses are stretched in a commercially available single-mode fiber and compressed after amplification to subpicosecond pulse duration. In a multimode Yb-doped fiber amplifier we have demonstrated average powers of up to 22 W and single-pulse energies of up to 130 μJ. Modulation grating has been achieved by two interfered femtosecond laser pulses on the surface of the silica glass. The modulation grating formed at the middle of each bulge of the common grating and was attributed to the higher-order modulation arising from second-harmonic generation (SHG) of the femtosecond laser pulse incident to the surface of silica glass. The periods and depths of the fundamental grating and the modulation grating have been observed by using an atomic force microscopy (AFM). Experimental results show that the average depth of the modulation grating is nearly a half of the depth of the fundamental grating.  相似文献

A multi-crystal and a frequency-selective group-velocity compensating schemes are proposed for the sum frequency-third harmonic generation of low power ultra-short pulses from a Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser. The mechanisms of compensation are analyzed accordingly. It is shown that the temporal walk-off can be effectively compensated without any dispersive element. By use of BBO, calcite crystals together with specially designed composite phase delay plates and dichroic beamsplitters, high quality third harmonic ultra-violet pulses within 300 nm can be generated by the two schemes.  相似文献

We present a novel high power femtosecond infrared laser source, based on a three-stage chirped-pulse amplification scheme. Owing to the high power output of the Ti:sapphire amplifiers, it becomes routinely possible to produce femtosecond infrared laser pulses in the wavelength region of 2.6–20 μm with minimum pulse energies of 15 μJ, to our knowledge roughly an improvement of an order of magnitude. With such pulses we have performed femtosecond second-order nonlinear optical surface spectroscopy in the fingerprint region. We have probed the skeletal modes of the first few monolayers of a polymer/air interface in a femtosecond vibrational sum frequency generation experiment. This development opens up new possibilities to investigate surface structures and dynamics of, e.g., organo-metallic compounds, proteins, and peptides. PACS 42.65.-k; 68.35.-Ja; 82.35.Ps  相似文献

We report a high-power source of coherent picosecond light pulses based on optical parametric generation and amplification in LiB3O5 and AgGaS2 crystals. The spectral range of this continuously tunable source covers the visible, near-infrared and medium-infrared spectrum from 0.41 to 12.9 m. An optical parametric generator and amplifier, consisting of two type-I phase-matched LiB3O5 crystals and a diffraction grating, is pumped by the third harmonic of a picosecond Nd:YAG laser and provides spectrally narrow, high-power pulses from 0.41 to 2.4 m. Energy conversion efficiencies up to 16 percent are achieved. The pulse duration is about 14 ps, the bandwidth between 10 and 30 cm–1. The tuning range is extended to 12.9 m by mixing the infrared output between 1.16 and 2.13 m with the fundamental of the Nd:YAG laser in type-I-phase-matched AgGaS2 crystals. Up to 25 percent of the pulse energy at 1.064 m is converted into parametric infrared pulses. Bandwidths between 3 and 8 cm–1 and a pulse duration of approximately 19 ps are measured for these pulses. We also observe a retracing behaviour in the tuning curve of AgGaS2 not reported before.  相似文献
