Wing-type vortex generators for fin-and-tube heat exchangers   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The effect of wing-type vortex generators on heat transfer and pressure drop of a fin-and-tube heat exchanger element was investigated. Local heat transfer was measured by liquid crystal thermography on the fin in the Reynolds number range of 600–2700. Flow losses were estimated from the measured pressure drop of an element. Delta winglets were used as vortex generators. Four fin-and-tube configurations were tested, an inline and a staggered arrangement, each with plain fins and with fins with a pair of vortex generators behind each tube. For the inline tube arrangement the vortex generators increase the heat transfer by 55–65% with a corresponding increase of 20–45% in the apparent friction factor. Results indicate that the vortex generators have the potential to reduce considerably the size and mass of heat exchangers for a given heat load.  相似文献

The naphthalene sublimation method was used to study the effects of span position of vortex generators (VGs) on local heat transfer on three-row flat tube bank fin. A dimensionless factor of the larger the better characteristics, JF, is used to screen the optimum span position of VGs. In order to get JF, the local heat transfer coefficient obtained in experiments and numerical method are used to obtain the heat transferred from the fin. A new parameter, named as staggered ratio, is introduced to consider the interactions of vortices generated by partial or full periodically staggered arrangement of VGs. The present results reveal that: VGs should be mounted as near as possible to the tube wall; the vortices generated by the upstream VGs converge at wake region of flat tube; the interactions of vortices with counter rotating direction do not effect Nusselt number (Nu) greatly on fin surface mounted with VGs, but reduce Nu greatly on the other fin surface; the real staggered ratio should include the effect of flow convergence; with increasing real staggered ratio, these interactions are intensified, and heat transfer performance decreases; for average Nu and friction factor (f), the effects of interactions of vortices are not significant, f has slightly smaller value when real staggered ratio is about 0.6 than that when VGs are in no staggered arrangement. This study examines the heat transfer enhancement from a horizontal rectangular fin embedded with triangular perforations (their bases parallel and toward the fin tip) under natural convection. The fin's heat dissipation rate is compared to that of an equivalent solid one. The parameters considered are geometrical dimensions and thermal properties of the fin and the perforations. The gain in the heat transfer enhancement and the fin weight reduction due to the perforations are considered. The study shows that the heat dissipation from the perforated fin for a certain range of triangular perforation dimensions and spaces between perforations result in improvement in the heat transfer over the equivalent solid fin. The heat transfer enhancement of the perforated fin increases as the fin thermal conductivity and its thickness are increased.  相似文献

Heat transfer dissipation from a horizontal rectangular fin embedded with equilateral triangular perforations is computed numerically using one-dimensional finite element technique. The bases of the triangles are parallel and toward the fin base. The body of the fin is discretized into a number of subdivisions (finite elements). The number of these elements can be altered as required according to the automatic mesh generation. The heat dissipation of the perforated fin is computed and compared with that of the solid one of the same dimensions and same thermal properties. The comparison refers to acceptable results and heat dissipation enhancement due to certain perforation.  相似文献

In this paper, numerical, curvilinear and turbulent model has been used to investigate the effect of vortex generator's longitudinal displacement on heat transfer and fluid flow in different Reynolds numbers ranging from 500 to 3000. The numerical model has been validated with experimental results of a former study, which is resembled in a particular case. Numerical simulation shows that the vorticity enhancement would increase both Nusselt number and pressure drop. Proposed trend is not constant and the pattern in which parameters change is dependent on Reynolds number. Finally, a conjugated optimization of pressure drop and the Nusselt number has been suggested based on the order of parameter changes. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This work deals with the local heat transfer coefficient evaluation over the fin of the second row of a staggered circular finned tube heat exchanger assembly. The coefficient distribution is determined by using a transient technique and by calculating the energy balance during the fin cooling. The calculation model takes into account radiation with the surrounding and lateral heat conduction into the material. The method uses infrared measurements and integration between time bounds that depend on space. It is proposed to choose the integration bounds with an original criterion based on local heat transfer. Validation is performed on the reference case consisting in a thin plate in an aerodynamically and thermally developing channel flow. Then, distributions of Nusselt number on the circular fin are presented for several Reynolds numbers. The high resolution of the whole method and set-up allow detecting thermal imprints of developing horseshoe vortices. These imprints are analyzed by following their angular evolution around the tube.  相似文献

The effect of corner angle variations on pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics is investigated in the fully developed region of wavy ducts with trapezoidal cross‐sections. The resulting enhancement of convection, with respect to corresponding straight ducts, can be attributed to the formation of longitudinal vortices close to the two parallel surfaces. Numerical simulations show that Nusselt numbers and friction factors increase with the decrease of corner angle from 90 to 60°, before levelling out around 60°. Nusselt numbers and friction factors also increase with the Reynolds number, and the slopes of their representative curves increase above a critical value of the Reynolds number because of the onset of time‐periodic flow oscillations. In desalinization devices and some heat exchangers making use of low-quality heat energy, both wall temperatures and wall heat fluxes of the heated tubes are generally quite low; hence they cannot cause boiling in flooded tube-bundle evaporators with common large tube spacing. However, when the tube spacing is very small, the incipient boiling in restricted spaces can generate and results in higher heat transfer than that of pool boiling at the same heat flux. This study investigated experimentally the effects of tube spacing, positions of tubes and test pressures on the boiling heat transfer of water in restricted spaces of the compact in-line bundles consisting of smooth horizontal tubes. The experimental results show that tube spacing and tube position have significant effects on the boiling heat transfer in a compact tube bundle. There is an optimum tube spacing that provides the largest heat transfer coefficient at the same heat flux.  相似文献

The paper discusses methods of establishing the course of a boiling curve that base on measurements of temperature distribution on a fin surface. Two cases of a local correlation between the heat transfer coefficient and the wall superheat are considered. The first is the case of a smooth copper fin for which the boiling curve is defined using the power-law formula. It is essential to determine, however, how sensitive this method is to measurement errors. In the other case, the local values of the heat transfer coefficient are approximated by means of a power-law polynomial. The method efficiency is studied using the example of a fin surface modified with a laser beam.  相似文献

The influence of heat transfer on the steady flow of a fourth‐grade fluid between two stationary parallel porous plates is studied. The flow is engendered under the application of a constant pressure gradient. The concept of homotopy analysis method is utilized for the series solution of the governing problem. Numerical solution has been also carried out. In addition, both analytic and numerical solutions are compared. The variations of embedded parameters into the solution are predicted through the graphical representations. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Tube inserts are used as heat transfer enhancement tool for both retrofit and new design of shell and tube heat exchangers. This paper discusses and reviews the characteristics and performance of twisted tapes. The theory and application are also addressed. Industrial case study was selected to illustrate the behaviour effect that the twisted tapes impose at various laminar, transition and turbulent flow regions. This effect was demonstrated by changing the inside tube diameter and twist ratio through evaluating selected exchanger design parameters such as: local heat transfer coefficient, friction factor and pressure drop. Testing the exponent powers for Re and Pr at both laminar and turbulent regions were carried out. General design considerations are outlined for the use of twisted tapes in shell and tube heat exchangers.  相似文献

Transitions occurring after the onset of spiral vortex flow in a wide concentric annular gap of radius ratio 0.8, formed by a stationary outer cylinder and a rotatable inner cylinder, have been studied experimentally. By isothermal heating of the annular surface, it was possible to consider diabatic as well as adiabatic conditions. At an axial Reynolds number of 500 and for a range of Taylor numbers up to 107, power spectra and auto-correlograms were taken at two radial positions near to the inner and outer annular surfaces; these are compared with previous results taken at mid-gap under adiabatic conditions. Measurements of turbulence intensity across the gap were made also. Probability histograms and signal traces for diabatic flow near to the outer annular surface are presented. It has been shown that the vortex transitions affect the thermal boundary layer and, consequently, the heat transfer rates at the outer surface. A positive radial thermal gradient was seen to have little effect on the flow. The imposed axial flow was shown to be stabilising under adiabatic conditions but destabilising under diabatic conditions.  相似文献

In the present study, a whole heat exchanger with a hydraulic diameter of 2.3 mm is tested, which is a minichannel heat exchanger according to the Kandlikar classification. This is a louvered fin and flat tube heat exchanger currently used in car cooling systems, also known as radiator. A glycol-water mixture (60/40 in volume) circulates through the tubes at flows ranging from 100 to 7800 l/h and at a supply temperature of 90 °C. This fluid is cooled with ambient air at a temperature of 20 °C and at frontal air velocities varying between 0.5 and 7 m/s. The thermohydraulic performance of the heat exchanger is compared with the classical correlations given in the literature for the heat transfer and the friction factor calculation. On the glycol-water side the heat exchanger is characterized for Reynolds numbers from 30 to 8000. A first comparison is carried out with the correlations available in the literature with a purely predictive model by obtaining a predictive value with a systematic under prediction lower than 10%. In a second step a semi-empirical model is considered to identify the experimental heat transfer coefficients for this application.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted using porous ceramic inserts to enhance the radiative heat transfer from natural gas flames in a straight-through radiant tube burner. The performance of the radiant tube burner with partially stabilized zirconia and silicon carbide inserts is compared to a baseline case of no inserts at three levels of combustion air preheat. Spectral intensities, temperatures within the radiant tube burner, tube wall temperatures, and exhaust temperatures were measured to determine the effectiveness of the enhanced heat transfer due to the inserts. Exhaust emission constituents were also measured to determine the effect that the inserts have on exhaust products. NOx emissions are reduced by up to 30% with the inserts. The silicon carbide inserts have higher spectral intensities and total radiative energy transfer than partially stabilized zirconia inserts. Both inserts have enhanced radiant heat transfer compared to the no-insert configuration, with the radiative enhancement due to inserts as great as five times that of the no-insert configuration. The net result is increased tube wall temperatures and decreased exhaust temperatures with the ceramic inserts.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of a numerical study on the flow characteristics and heat transfer over two equal square cylinders in a tandem arrangement. Spacing between the cylinders is five widths of the cylinder and the Reynolds number ranges from 1 to 200, Pr=0.71. Both steady and unsteady incompressible laminar flow in the 2D regime are performed with a finite volume code based on the SIMPLEC algorithm and non‐staggered grid. A study of the effects of spatial resolution and blockage on the results is provided. In this study, the instantaneous and mean streamlines, vorticity and isotherm patterns for different Reynolds numbers are presented and discussed. In addition, the global quantities such as pressure and viscous drag coefficients, RMS lift and drag coefficients, recirculation length, Strouhal number and Nusselt number are determined and discussed for various Reynolds numbers. Since the heat transfer performance of syngas cooler affects the efficiency of the power generating system with integrated coal gasification combined cycle (IGCC) directly, it is important to obtain the heat transfer characteristics of high-pressure syngas in the cooler. Heat transfer in convection cooling section of pressurized coal gasifier with the membrane helical coils and membrane serpentine tubes under high pressure is experimentally investigated. High pressure single gas (He or N2) and their mixture (He + N2) gas serve as the test media in the test pressure range from 0.5 MPa to 3.0 MPa. The results show that the convection heat transfer coefficient of high pressure gas is influenced by the working pressure, gas composition and symmetry of flow around the coil, of which the working pressure is the most significant factor. The average convection heat transfer coefficients for various gases in heat exchangers are systematically analyzed, and the correlations between Nu and Re for two kinds of membrane heat exchangers are obtained. The heat transfer coefficient of heat exchanger with membrane helical coils is greater than that of the membrane serpentine-tube heat exchanger under the same conditions. The heat transfer coefficient increment of the membrane helical-coil heat exchanger is greater than that of the membrane serpentine-tube heat exchanger with the increase of gas pressure and velocity.  相似文献

This work represents an experimental basic research aimed to investigate the influence on the heat transfer rate of the ultrasounds, in free convection and in presence of liquid. In fact the ultrasonic waves induce, thanks to vibrations, turbulence on the dynamic field, and so an increase of the convection coefficient. The heater is a circular cylinder, immersed in distilled water, and warmed up by Joule effect. This study has carried on for 1 year at Energetics Department “L. Poggi”. The effect was observed since 1960s: different authors had studied the cooling effect due to the ultrasonic waves at different heat transfer regimes, especially from a thin platinum wire to water. We have chosen to investigate the subcooled boiling regime, because this one is the best condition for the heat transfer enhancement, according to the scientific literature. We have carried out a wide experimental study, varying the different water subcooling degrees, the ultrasonic generator power, the ultrasound frequency and the placement of the heater inside the ultrasonic tank, in function of the range of the values of heat flux per unit surface needed dissipating. These values were supplied us by a possible practical application of the ultrasonic streaming: the cooling of 3D highly integrated electronic components. These packaging systems should have to provide all future devices, such as electronics, actuators, sensors and antenna. In fact, for these systems the thermal problem is a critical challenge, because they do not have to overtake critical temperature, after that they could damage irreversibly. Moreover, the traditional cooling systems used in electronic do not seem to be useful for them. On the contrary, the results obtained with ultrasounds, allow heat transfer coefficient enhancement of about 50% to be reached. The purpose is to find out the set of optimal conditions, in order to apply successively all the results to a real packaging system.  相似文献
