A fully explicit, characteristic‐based split (CBS) method for viscoelastic flow past a circular cylinder, placed in a rectangular channel, is presented. The pressure equation in its explicit form is employed via an artificial compressibility parameter. The constitutive equations used here are based on the Oldroyd‐B model. No loss of convergence to steady state was observed in any of the results presented in this paper. Comparison of the present results with other available numerical data shows that the CBS algorithm is in excellent agreement with them at lower Deborah numbers. However, at higher Deborah numbers, the present results differ from other numerical solutions. This is due to the fact that the positive definitiveness of the conformation matrix is lost between a Deborah number of 0.6 and 0.7. However, the positive definitiveness is retained when an artificial diffusion is added to the discrete constitutive equations at higher Deborah numbers. It appears that the fractional solution stages used in the CBS scheme and the higher‐order time step‐based convection stabilization clearly reduce the instability at higher Deborah numbers. The Deborah number limit reached in the present work is three without artificial dissipation and two with artificial dissipation. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper describes the implementation of a numerical solver that is capable of simulating compressible flows of nonideal single‐phase fluids. The proposed method can be applied to arbitrary equations of state and is suitable for all Mach numbers. The pressure‐based solver uses the operator‐splitting technique and is based on the PISO/SIMPLE algorithm: the density, velocity, and temperature fields are predicted by solving the linearized versions of the balance equations using the convective fluxes from the previous iteration or time step. The overall mass continuity is ensured by solving the pressure equation derived from the continuity equation, the momentum equation, and the equation of state. Nonphysical oscillations of the numerical solution near discontinuities are damped using the Kurganov‐Tadmor/Kurganov‐Noelle‐Petrova (KT/KNP) scheme for convective fluxes. The solver was validated using different test cases, where analytical and/or numerical solutions are present or can be derived: (1) A convergent‐divergent nozzle with three different operating conditions; (2) the Riemann problem for the Peng‐Robinson equation of state; (3) the Riemann problem for the covolume equation of state; (4) the development of a laminar velocity profile in a circular pipe (also known as Poiseuille flow); (5) a laminar flow over a circular cylinder; (6) a subsonic flow over a backward‐facing step at low Reynolds numbers; (7) a transonic flow over the RAE 2822 airfoil; and (8) a supersonic flow around a blunt cylinder‐flare model. The spatial approximation order of the scheme is second order. The mesh convergence of the numerical solution was achieved for all cases. The accuracy order for highly compressible flows with discontinuities is close to first order and, for incompressible viscous flows, it is close to second order. The proposed solver is named rhoPimpleCentralFoam and is implemented in the open‐source CFD library OpenFOAM®. For high speed flows, it shows a similar behavior as the KT/KNP schemes (implemented as rhoCentralFoam‐solver, Int. J. Numer. Meth. Fluids 2010), and for flows with small Mach numbers, it behaves like solvers that are based on the PISO/SIMPLE algorithm.  相似文献

A depth‐averaged two‐dimensional model has been developed in the curvilinear co‐ordinate system for free‐surface flow problems. The non‐linear convective terms of the momentum equations are discretized based on the explicit–finite–analytic method with second‐order accuracy in space and first‐order accuracy in time. The other terms of the momentum equations, as well as the mass conservation equation, are discretized by the finite difference method. The discretized governing equations are solved in turn, and iteration in each time step is adopted to guarantee the numerical convergence. The new model has been applied to various flow situations, even for the cases with the presence of sub‐critical and supercritical flows simultaneously or sequentially. Comparisons between the numerical results and the experimental data show that the proposed model is robust with satisfactory accuracy. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An innovative computational model, developed to simulate high‐Reynolds number flow past circular cylinders in two‐dimensional incompressible viscous flows in external flow fields is described in this paper. The model, based on transient Navier–Stokes equations, can solve the infinite boundary value problems by extracting the boundary effects on a specified finite computational domain, using the projection method. The pressure is assumed to be zero at infinite boundary and the external flow field is simulated using a direct boundary element method (BEM) by solving a pressure Poisson equation. A three‐step finite element method (FEM) is used to solve the momentum equations of the flow. The present model is applied to simulate high‐Reynolds number flow past a single circular cylinder and flow past two cylinders in which one acts as a control cylinder. The simulation results are compared with experimental data and other numerical models and are found to be feasible and satisfactory. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to present a methodology of using a two‐step split‐operator approach for solving the shallow water flow equations in terms of an orthogonal curvilinear co‐ordinate system. This approach is in fact one kind of the so‐called fractional step method that has been popularly used for computations of dynamic flow. By following that the momentum equations are decomposed into two portions, the computation procedure involves two steps. The first step (dispersion step) is to compute the provisional velocity in the momentum equation without the pressure gradient. The second step (propagation step) is to correct the provisional velocity by considering a divergence‐free velocity field, including the effect of the pressure gradient. This newly proposed method, other than the conventional split‐operator methods, such as the projection method, considers the effects of pressure gradient and bed friction in the second step. The advantage of this treatment is that it increases flexibility, efficiency and applicability of numerical simulation for various hydraulic problems. Four cases, including back‐water flow, reverse flow, circular basin flow and unsteady flow, have been demonstrated to show the accuracy and practical application of the method. In this paper, the cell‐based smoothed finite element method (CS‐FEM) with the semi‐implicit characteristic‐based split (CBS) scheme (CBS/CS‐FEM) is proposed for computational fluid dynamics. The 3‐node triangular (T3) element and 4‐node quadrilateral (Q4) element are used for present CBS/CS‐FEM for two‐dimensional flows. The 8‐node hexahedral element (H8) is used for three‐dimensional flows. Two types of CS‐FEM are implemented in this paper. One is standard CS‐FEM with quadrilateral gradient smoothing cells for Q4 element and hexahedron cells for H8 element. Another is called as n‐sided CS‐FEM (nCS‐FEM) whose gradient smoothing cells are triangles for Q4 element and pyramids for H8 element. To verify the proposed methods, benchmarking problems are tested for two‐dimensional and three‐dimensional flows. The benchmarks show that CBS/CS‐FEM and CBS/nCS‐FEM are capable to solve incompressible laminar flow and can produce reliable results for both steady and unsteady flows. The proposed CBS/CS‐FEM method has merits on better robustness against distorted mesh with only slight more computation time and without losing accuracy, which is important for problems with heavy mesh distortion. The blood flow in carotid bifurcation is also simulated to show capabilities of proposed methods for realistic and complicated flow problems.  相似文献

A semi‐implicit characteristic‐based split (CBS) meshfree algorithm in the arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) framework is proposed for the numerical solution of incompressible free surface flow problem in the paper. The algorithm is the extension of general CBS method which was initially introduced in finite element framework, this is due to the fact that CBS method not only can enhance the stability, but also avoid LBB condition when equal order basis function is used to approximate velocity and pressure variables. Meanwhile, a simple way for node update and node speed calculation is developed which is used to capture the free surface exactly. The numerical solutions are compared with available analytical and numerical solutions, which shows that the proposed method has better ability to simulate the free surface incompressible flow problem. A time-implicit numerical method for solving unsteady incompressible viscous flow problems is introduced. The method is based on introducing intermediate compressibility into a projection scheme to obtain a Helmholtz equation for a pressure-type variable. The intermediate compressibility increases the diagonal dominance of the discretized pressure equation so that the Helmholtz pressure equation is relatively easy to solve numerically. The Helmholtz pressure equation provides an iterative method for satisfying the continuity equation for time-implicit Navier–Stokes algorithms. An iterative scheme is used to simultaneously satisfy, within a given tolerance, the velocity divergence-free condition and momentum equations at each time step. Collocated primitive variables on a non-staggered finite difference mesh are used. The method is applied to an unsteady Taylor problem and unsteady laminar flow past a circular cylinder.  相似文献

In this paper, an accurate semi‐implicit rotational projection method is introduced to solve the Navier–Stokes equations for incompressible flow simulations. The accuracy of the fractional step procedure is investigated for the standard finite‐difference method, and the discrete forms are presented with arbitrary orders or accuracy. In contrast to the previous semi‐implicit projection methods, herein, an alternative way is proposed to decouple pressure from the momentum equation by employing the principle form of the pressure Poisson equation. This equation is based on the divergence of the convective terms and incorporates the actual pressure in the simulations. As a result, the accuracy of the method is not affected by the common choice of the pseudo‐pressure in the previous methods. Also, the velocity correction step is redefined, and boundary conditions are introduced accordingly. Several numerical tests are conducted to assess the robustness of the method for second and fourth orders of accuracy. The results are compared with the solutions obtained from a typical high‐resolution fully explicit method and available benchmark reports. Herein, the numerical tests are consisting of simulations for the Taylor–Green vortex, lid‐driven square cavity, and vortex–wall interaction. It is shown that the present method can preserve the order of accuracy for both velocity and pressure fields in second‐order and high‐order simulations. Furthermore, a very good agreement is observed between the results of the present method and benchmark simulations. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper combines the pseudo‐compressibility procedure, the preconditioning technique for accelerating the time marching for stiff hyperbolic equations, and high‐order accurate central compact scheme to establish the code for efficiently and accurately solving incompressible flows numerically based on the finite difference discretization. The spatial scheme consists of the sixth‐order compact scheme and 10th‐order numerical filter operator for guaranteeing computational stability. The preconditioned pseudo‐compressible Navier–Stokes equations are marched temporally using the implicit lower–upper symmetric Gauss–Seidel time integration method, and the time accuracy is improved by the dual‐time step method for the unsteady problems. The efficiency and reliability of the present procedure are demonstrated by applications to Taylor decaying vortices phenomena, double periodic shear layer rolling‐up problem, laminar flow over a flat plate, low Reynolds number unsteady flow around a circular cylinder at Re = 200, high Reynolds number turbulence flow past the S809 airfoil, and the three‐dimensional flows through two 90°curved ducts of square and circular cross sections, respectively. It is found that the numerical results of the present algorithm are in good agreement with theoretical solutions or experimental data. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A finite element method for quasi‐incompressible viscous flows is presented. An equation for pressure is derived from a second‐order time accurate Taylor–Galerkin procedure that combines the mass and the momentum conservation laws. At each time step, once the pressure has been determined, the velocity field is computed solving discretized equations obtained from another second‐order time accurate scheme and a least‐squares minimization of spatial momentum residuals. The terms that stabilize the finite element method (controlling wiggles and circumventing the Babuska–Brezzi condition) arise naturally from the process, rather than being introduced a priori in the variational formulation. A comparison between the present second‐order accurate method and our previous first‐order accurate formulation is shown. The method is also demonstrated in the computation of the leaky‐lid driven cavity flow and in the simulation of a crossflow past a circular cylinder. In both cases, good agreement with previously published experimental and computational results has been obtained. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, we present an application of a parallel‐in‐time algorithm for the solution of the unsteady Navier–Stokes model equations that are of parabolic–elliptic type. This method is based on the alternated use of a coarse global sequential solver and a fine local parallel one. A standard finite volume/finite differences first‐order approach is used for discretization of the unsteady two‐dimensional Navier–Stokes equations. The Taylor vortex decay problem and the confined flow around a square cylinder were selected as unsteady flow examples to illustrate and analyse the properties of the parallel‐in‐time method through numerical experiments. The influence of several parameters on the computing time required to perform a parallel‐in‐time calculation on a PC cluster was verified. Among them we have analysed the influence of the number of processors, the number of iterations for convergence, the resolution of the spatial domain and the influence of the time‐step sizes ratio between the coarse and fine grids. Significant computer time saving was achieved when compared with the single processor computing time, particularly when the spatial dimension of the problem is low and the temporal scale is large. In the current study, numerical investigation of incompressible turbulent flow is presented. By the artificial compressibility method, momentum and continuity equations are coupled. Considering Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equations, the Spalart–Allmaras turbulence model, which has accurate results in two‐dimensional problems, is used to calculate Reynolds stresses. For convective fluxes a Roe‐like scheme is proposed for the steady Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equations. Also, Jameson averaging method was implemented. In comparison, the proposed characteristics‐based upwind incompressible turbulent Roe‐like scheme, demonstrated very accurate results, high stability, and fast convergence. The fifth‐order Runge–Kutta scheme is used for time discretization. The local time stepping and implicit residual smoothing were applied as the convergence acceleration techniques. Suitable boundary conditions have been implemented considering flow behavior. The problem has been studied at high Reynolds numbers for cross flow around the horizontal circular cylinder and NACA0012 hydrofoil. Results were compared with those of others and a good agreement has been observed. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A novel finite point method is developed to simulate flow problems. The mashes in the traditional numerical methods are supplanted by the distribution of points in the calculation domain. A local interpolation based on the properties of Taylor series expansion is used to construct an approximation for unknown functions and their derivatives. An upwind‐dominated scheme is proposed to efficiently handle the non‐linear convection. Comparison with the finite difference solutions for the two‐dimensional driven cavity flow and the experimental results for flow around a cylinder shows that the present method is capable of satisfactorily predicting the flow separation characteristic. The present algorithm is simple and flexible for complex geometric boundary. The influence of the point distribution on computation time and accuracy of results is included. A numerical investigation is performed to study the solution of natural and mixed convection flows by Galerkin‐characteristic method. The method is based on combining the modified method of characteristics with a Galerkin finite element discretization in primitive variables. It can be interpreted as a fractional step technique where convective part and Stokes/Boussinesq part are treated separately. The main feature of the proposed method is that, due to the Lagrangian treatment of convection, the Courant–Friedrichs–Lewy (CFL) restriction is relaxed and the time truncation errors are reduced in the Stokes/Boussinesq part. Numerical simulations are carried out for a natural convection in squared cavity and for a mixed convection flow past a circular cylinder. The computed results are compared with those obtained using other Eulerian‐based Galerkin finite element solvers, which are used for solving many convective flow models. The Galerkin‐characteristic method has been found to be feasible and satisfactory.

In this paper, we propose a new lattice Boltzmann model for the compressible Navier–Stokes equations. The new model is based on a three‐energy‐level and three‐speed lattice Boltzmann equation by using a method of higher moments of the equilibrium distribution functions. As the 25‐bit model, we obtained the equilibrium distribution functions and the compressible Navier–Stokes equations with the second accuracy of the truncation errors. The numerical examples show that the model can be used to simulate the shock waves, contact discontinuities and supersonic flows around circular cylinder. The numerical results are compared with those obtained by traditional method. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This study presents characteristic‐based split (CBS) algorithm in the meshfree context. This algorithm is the extension of general CBS method which was initially introduced in finite element framework. In this work, the general equations of flow have been represented in the meshfree context. A new finite element and MFree code is developed for solving flow problems. This computational code is capable of solving both time‐dependent and steady‐state flow problems. Numerical simulation of some known benchmark flow problems has been studied. Computational results of MFree method have been compared to those of finite element method. The results obtained have been verified by known numerical, analytical and experimental data in the literature. A number of shape functions are used for field variable interpolation. The performance of each interpolation method is discussed. It is concluded that the MFree method is more accurate than FEM if the same numbers of nodes are used for each solver. Meshfree CBS algorithm is completely stable even at high Reynolds numbers. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A general methodology is presented in order to obtain a hierarchy of high‐order filter functions, starting from the standard top‐hat filter, naturally linked to control volumes flow simulations. The goal is to have a new filtered variable better represented in its high resolved wavenumber components by using a suitable deconvolution. The proposed formulation is applied to the integral momentum equation, that is the evolution equation for the top‐hat filtered variable, by performing a spatial reconstruction based on the approximate inversion of the averaging operator. A theoretical analysis for the Burgers' model equation is presented, demonstrating that the local de‐averaging is an effective tool to obtain a higher‐order accuracy. It is also shown that the subgrid‐scale term, to be modeled in the deconvolved balance equation, has a smaller absolute importance in the resolved wavenumber range for increasing deconvolution order. A numerical analysis of the procedure is presented, based on high‐order upwind and central fluxes reconstruction, leading to congruent control volume schemes. Finally, the features of the present high‐order conservative formulation are tested in the numerical simulation of a sample turbulent flow: the flow behind a backward‐facing step. Pressure‐based methods such as the SIMPLE algorithm are frequently used to determine a coupled solution between the component momentum equations and the continuity equation. This paper presents a colocated variable pressure correction algorithm for control volumes of polyhedral/polygonal cell topologies. The correction method is presented independent of spatial approximation. The presence of non‐isotropic momentum source terms is included in the proposed algorithm to ensure its applicability to multi‐physics applications such as gas and particulate flows. Two classic validation test cases are included along with a newly proposed test case specific to multiphase flows. The classic validation test cases demonstrate the application of the proposed algorithm on truly arbitrary polygonal/polyhedral cell meshes. A comparison between the current algorithm and commercially available software is made to demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is competitively efficient. The newly proposed test case demonstrates the benefits of the current algorithm when applied to a multiphase flow situation. The numerical results from this case show that the proposed algorithm is more robust than other methods previously proposed. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
