Denoteby (l; ; ) the eigenvalue problem ly = y with boundary conditionsy(0)cos+y'(0)sin = 0 and (a+b)y(1) = (c+d)(py')(1). Define (; ; ) as above but with l replacedby . Let w_n denote the eigenfunctionof (l; ; ) having eigenvalue n and initial conditions w_n(0)= sin and pw'_n(0) = –cos and let _n = –aw_n(1)+cpw'_n(1).Define _n and _n similarly. As sample results, it is proved that if (l; ; ) and (; ; ) have the same spectrum, and (l;; ) and (; ; ) have the samespectrum or for all n, thenq/r = /.

We consider a regular indefinite Sturm-Liouville problem with two self-adjoint boundary conditions affinely dependent on the eigenparameter. We give sufficient conditions under which the root vectors of this Sturm-Liouville problem can be selected to form a Riesz basis of a corresponding weighted Hilbert space.

Faber-Krahn Inequality for Anisotropic Eigenvalue Problems with Robin Boundary Conditions

In this paper we study the main properties of the first eigenvalue λ ₁(Ω) and its eigenfunctions of a class of highly nonlinear elliptic operators in a bounded Lipschitz domain Ω ? ? _n , assuming a Robin boundary condition. Moreover, we prove a Faber-Krahn inequality for λ ₁(Ω).

Discrete Sturm-Liouville Problems With Parameter in the Boundary Conditions

This paper deals with discrete second order Sturm-Liouville problems in which the parameter that is part of the Sturm-Liouville difference equation also appears linearly in the boundary conditions. An appropriate Green's formula is developed for this problem, which leads to the fact that the eigenvalues are simple, and that they are real under appropriate restrictions. A boundary value problem can be expressed by a system of equations, and finding solutions to a boundary value problem is equivalent to finding the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the coefficient matrix of a related linear system. Thus, the behavior of eigenvalues and eigenvectors is investigated using techniques in linear algebra, and a linear-algebraic proof is given that the eigenvalues are distinct under appropriate restrictions. The operator is extended to a self-adjoint operator and an expansion theorem is proved.

Spectral Asymptotics of Self-Adjoint Fourth Order Differential Operators with Eigenvalue Parameter Dependent Boundary Conditions

A fourth-order regular ordinary differential operator with eigenvalue dependent boundary conditions is considered. This problem is realized by a quadratic operator pencil with self-adjoint operators. The location of the eigenvalues is discussed and the first four terms of the eigenvalue asymptotics are evaluated explicitly.     

Asymptotics of the m-Coefficient for Eigenvalue Problems with Eigenparameter in the Boundary Conditions

For Sturm-Liouville problems on [a, ) with a regular -dependentboundary condition at a, and the limit point case at , a techniqueof W. N. Everitt [1] is employed to obtain asymptotic formulaefor the associated m()-functions on rays and lines in the complex-plane. The method relies on asymptotic formulae for solutionsof the initial value problem for –u'+qu = u, as || ,which the author has given in [4]. For the case of the regularleft endpoint, the asymptotic formulae on vertical lines sufficeto provide a direct proof of the formula for the total variationof the associated spectral function, a question which the authorhad raised in [3; Remark 5.2].

Problems Identifying Independent and Dependent Variables

This paper discusses one step from the scientific method—that of identifying independent and dependent variables—from both scientific and mathematical perspectives. It begins by analyzing an episode from a middle school mathematics classroom that illustrates the need for students and teachers alike to develop a robust understanding of independent and dependent variables. It then outlines four rationales (two from science and two from mathematics) for identifying independent and dependent variables. Finally, it reports the results of a textbook analysis that used these rationales to examine the extent to which typical mathematics textbook problems support or supplant a sensible view of independent and dependent variables. The findings indicate that often, mathematics textbook problems misrepresent the sense‐making aspect of identifying independent and dependent variables, possibly setting students up to develop misconceptions about this step from the scientific method.     

Boundary Value Problems with Compatible Boundary Conditions

If Y is a subset of the space ℝⁿ × ℝⁿ, we call a pair of continuous functions U, V Y-compatible, if they map the space ℝⁿ into itself and satisfy Ux · Vy ≥ 0, for all (x, y) ∈ Y with x · y ≥ 0. (Dot denotes inner product.) In this paper a nonlinear two point boundary value problem for a second order ordinary differential n-dimensional system is investigated, provided the boundary conditions are given via a pair of compatible mappings. By using a truncation of the initial equation and restrictions of its domain, Brouwer's fixed point theorem is applied to the composition of the consequent mapping with some projections and a one-parameter family of fixed points P _δ is obtained. Then passing to the limits as δ tends to zero the so-obtained accumulation points are solutions of the problem.
