The problem of thermal instability in a fluid saturated porous spherical shell heated internally, due to uniform internal heat sources and in equilibrium under its own radial gravitational field is studied theoretically. A general disturbance is analysed into modes in terms of spherical harmonics of various orders,l, for different values of the thickness of the mantle and the criteria for the onset of convection for the first fifteen modes is obtained in four different cases when the outer and inner bounding surfaces are either impermeable or permeable. It is shown that as the thickness of the shell decreases, the pattern of convection which sets in at marginal stability shifts progressively to harmonics of higher order for all the three cases except when both the bounding surfaces are permeable, in which case the onset of convection occurs at a harmonic of order 1. A comparison of some representative results of these cases is made with that of continuous fluid shell with rigid or free boundary surfaces. The neutral stability plots for various thickness of the mantle, for five different models of the mantle, are plotted for the different types of boundary surfaces.  相似文献

Direct and inverse boundary value problems for models of stationary reaction–convection–diffusion are investigated. The direct problem consists in finding a solution of the corresponding boundary value problem for given data on the boundary of the domain of the independent variable. The peculiarity of the direct problem consists in the inhomogeneity and irregularity of mixed boundary data. Solvability and stability conditions are specified for the direct problem. The inverse boundary value problem consists in finding some traces of the solution of the corresponding boundary value problem for given standard and additional data on a certain part of the boundary of the domain of the independent variable. The peculiarity of the inverse problem consists in its ill-posedness. Regularizing methods and solution algorithms are developed for the inverse problem.  相似文献

The forced convection thermal boundary layer in a porous medium as an analytically tractable special case of a mixed convection problem is considered. It is shown that some general features of the mixed convection solutions reported recently by other authors [B. Brighi, J.-D. Hoernel, On the concave and convex solutions of mixed convection boundary layer approximation in a porous medium, Appl. Math. Lett. (published online, 2005); M. Guedda, Multiple solutions of mixed convection boundary layer approximations in a porous medium, Appl. Math. Lett. The problem of thermal convection is investigated for a layer of fluid when the heat flux law of Cattaneo is adopted. The boundary conditions are those appropriate to two fixed surfaces. It is shown that for small Cattaneo number the critical Rayleigh number initially increases from its classical value of 1707.765 until a critical value of the Cattaneo number is reached. For Cattaneo numbers greater than this critical value a notable Hopf bifurcation is observed with convection occurring at lower Rayleigh numbers and by oscillatory rather than stationary convection. The aspect ratio of the convection cells likewise changes.  相似文献

Heat and mass transfer effects in the three-dimensional mixed convection flow of a viscoelastic fluid with internal heat source/sink and chemical reaction have been investigated in the present work. The flow generation is because of an exponentially stretching surface. Magnetic field normal to the direction of flow is considered. Convective conditions at the surface are also encountered. Appropriate similarity transformations are utilized to reduce the boundary layer partial differential equations into the ordinary differential equations. The homotopy analysis method is used to develop the solution expressions. Impacts of different controlling parameters such as ratio parameter, Hartman number, internal heat source/sink, chemical reaction, mixed convection, concentration buoyancy parameter and Biot numbers on the velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are analyzed. The local Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are sketched and examined.  相似文献

We consider a convective flow in a porous medium of an incompressible viscous conducting fluid impinging on a permeable stretching surface with suction, and internal heat generation/absorption. Using a similarity transformation the governing equations of the problem are reduced to a coupled third-order nonlinear ordinary differential equations. We first examine a number of special cases for which we may obtain exact solutions. We then obtain analytical solutions (by the Homotopy Analysis Method) and numerical solutions (by a boundary value problem solver), in order to further study the behavior of the nonlinear differential equations, for various values of the physical parameters. Our numerical solutions are shown to agree with the available results in the literature. We then employ the numerical results to bring out the effects of the suction parameter, heat source/sink parameter, stretching parameter, porosity parameter, the Prandtl number and the free convection parameter on the flow and heat transfer characteristics. In the absence of suction and free convection, our findings are in agreement with the corresponding numerical results of Attia [H.A. Attia, On the effectiveness of porosity on stagnation point flow towards a stretching surface with heat generation, Comput. Mater. Sci. 38 (2007) 741-745].  相似文献

In this paper, investigation of stationary problems of natural thermal convection in the Boussinesq approximation with irregular boundary data is carried out. Existence and uniqueness theorems for a weak solution of such problems are proved. The smoothness of a weak solution depending on the smoothness of the initial data and the smoothness of the boundary of the domain where the problem is considered is investigated.  相似文献

An analysis has been carried out to describe mixed convection heat transfer in the boundary layers on an exponentially stretching continuous surface with an exponential temperature distribution in the presence of magnetic field, viscous dissipation and internal heat generation/absorption. Approximate analytical similarity solutions of the highly non-linear momentum and energy equations are obtained. The present results are found to be in excellent agreement with previously published work on various special cases of the problem. Numerical results for temperature distribution and the local Nusselt number have been obtained for different values of the governing parameters. The numerical solutions are obtained by considering an exponential dependent stretching velocity and prescribed boundary temperature on the flow directional coordinate. The effects of various physical parameters like Prandtl number, Hartman number, Grashof number on dimensionless heat transfer characteristics are discussed in detail. In particular, it has been found that increase in Prandtl number decreases the skin-friction coefficient at the stretching surface, while increase in the strength of the magnetic field leads to increase in the local Nusselt number.  相似文献

In a half-plane, a homogeneous Dirichlet boundary value problem for an inhomogeneous singularly perturbed convection–diffusion equation with constant coefficients and convection directed orthogonally away from the boundary of the half-plane is considered. A mixed initial boundary-value problem is considered for nonequilibrium sorption dynamics with inner-diffusion kinetics. The problem allows for convection and longitudinal diffusion and has a time-dependent boundary condition. This condition contains the time derivative of a solution component and constitutes the balance equation for the absorbed mixture near the output boundary of the sorption region—inside the diffusion barrier. Bounds on the solution of the direct problem are obtained: nonnegativity of the solution and its first time derivatives, and boundedness of the solution by known functions. The inverse problem of estimating the nonlinear system parameter—the sorption isotherm—is considered and a uniqueness theorem is proved.  相似文献

This paper considers the problem of laminar forced convection between two parallel plates. We present an unified numerical approach for some problems related to this case: the problem of viscous dissipation with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions and the Graetz problem. The solutions of these problems are obtained by a series expansion of the complete eigenfunctions system of some Sturm-Liouville problems. The eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of this Sturm-Liouville problem are obtained by using Galerkin’s method. Numerical examples are given for viscous fluids with various Brinkman numbers.  相似文献

Explicit–implicit approximations are used to approximate nonstationary convection–diffusion equations in time. In unconditionally stable two-level schemes, diffusion is taken from the upper time level, while convection, from the lower layer. In the case of three time levels, the resulting explicit–implicit schemes are second-order accurate in time. Explicit alternating triangular (asymmetric) schemes are used for parabolic problems with a self-adjoint elliptic operator. These schemes are unconditionally stable, but conditionally convergent. Three-level modifications of alternating triangular schemes with better approximating properties were proposed earlier. In this work, two- and three-level alternating triangular schemes for solving boundary value problems for nonstationary convection–diffusion equations are constructed. Numerical results are presented for a two-dimensional test problem on triangular meshes, such as Delaunay triangulations and Voronoi diagrams.  相似文献
