The current status of the research and development as well as the recent contributions in optical communications at INESC Porto is reviewed. This review includes all the work carried out in the last few years in optical fiber communications, namely the development of passive and active optical devices. Some of the passive structures that have been studied and developed are: add-drop multiplexers, multiplexer/demultiplexer based on Bragg grating technology, dispersion compensators, and optical cross-connects. Active photonic devices such as wavelength converters, fiber lasers, and fiber amplifiers have also been studied. New ideas are being continuously developed and tested. 相似文献

The nonlinear properties of semiconductor lasers and laser amplifiers when subject to optical injection are reviewed and new results are presented for multisection lasers, vertical cavity semiconductor optical amplifiers, and surface-emitting lasers. The main underlying material parameters are outlined and the key design approaches are discussed for both edge-emitting and vertical cavity devices. An overview of theoretical modeling approaches is discussed and a summary of key experimental results is presented. The practical use of optically injected edge-emitting and vertical cavity semiconductor lasers and laser amplifiers is illustrated with examples of applications including, among others, optical logic and chaotic communication. 相似文献

Alumina is an indispensable dopant in modern optical fiber technology, particularly due to its important role played in the recent developments of optical fiber amplifiers and high-power fiber lasers over the last decade or so, which have revolutionized the telecommunication systems, and the industrial laser landscapes, respectively. In this paper, Alumina-doped optical fibers advanced through the outside vapor deposition process and their key attributes in the respective applications are reviewed, with Alumina both as a sole dopant for its potential use in the low-loss transmission lines and as a co-dopant for active use in the high-brightness, high-power fiber laser applications. 相似文献

现在高功率光纤激光器和光纤放大器采用的双包层掺杂光纤,相对于从半导体泵浦激光器发射出的多模泵浦光束的大发散角,其内包层的直径很小,因此把泵浦光有效地耦合到双包层掺杂光纤的内包层是一个急需解决的难题。研制一种熔锥型侧面泵浦耦合器,可以大幅度提高泵浦光功率,实现增益光纤的多点泵浦,在双包层光纤放大器中使用良好,安全稳定,实现了较高的耦合效率,达到了70%,信号光通过率98%,信号输入与泵浦输入的隔离度大于50 dB,泵浦输入对输出端反向传输光的隔离度27 dB。通过对比结构紧凑性、耦合效率、系统稳定性等相关指标发现,熔锥型侧面泵浦耦合器完全可以满足高功率光纤激光器和光纤放大器的使用要求。 相似文献

Recent progress in the study of both absorptive and dispersive bistability in semiconductor injection lasers is reported. Inhomogeneously excited semiconductor lasers as an absorptive case, and laser diode optical amplifiers and optical injection locking systems of laser diodes as dispersive cases, are described. Ultrafast pulse sources based on multi-mode optical fibers are discussed. High-power passively mode-locked fiber lasers based on multi-mode rare-earth-doped optical fibers greatly exceed the power limitations of single-mode oscillators. Ultrafast multi-mode fiber amplifiers operating in conjunction with multi-mode oscillators provide even higher power levels, where nonlinear propagation effects enable pulse compression to below 100 fs. Multi-mode fiber oscillators can be combined with single-mode Raman-shifting fibers to produce widely wavelength-tunable sources of femtosecond pulses. Further amplification in Yb fibers allows for the generation of sub-100-fs pulses with W-level average powers. 相似文献

Advanced novel techniques for sophisticated LDA applications are presented in this paper. By applying laser sources with high output powers like MOPA-lasers (master oscillator power amplifier), fiber lasers and booster fiber amplifiers to increase the laser power in the measuring volume and by amplifying the scattered light power with optical fiber preamplifiers to increase the sensitivity of the receiving units, the signal-to-noise-ratio of laser Doppler signals is drastically improved and the overall performance of a laser Doppler anemometer is significantly enhanced. 相似文献

We have developed models to investigate the power properties of monolithic fiber laser with master oscillator multi-stage power amplifiers configuration. In the simulation the effect of optical characteristics of fiber fusion splice was considered, which was introduced by connecting fiber amplifiers. The theoretical modeling was established based on the classic theory of rate equations and the computational method was described in detail. On the basis of three high-power fiber lasers with different structures, we analyzed the splice loss and return loss, and how they influence the distribution of laser power in the system. The results showed that, on the present splicing level, both the enhancement of the pump capacity of fiber laser and the reduction of the quantity of power amplifier modules were effective strategies to accomplish fiber laser with tens of thousands of watts output. 相似文献

Phase-conjugating stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) mirrors are frequently used to improve the brightness of solid-state lasers. With a scheme for designing fiber amplifiers as SBS phase conjugators the power requirements can be decreased by orders of magnitude; yet only low coherence is required, and high fidelity is reached. A peak power of 5 W was demonstrated to be sufficient for optical SBS phase conjugation. 相似文献
